“Research as a Parametric Design Tool”
All problems of society are problems of communication…The city is a complex text and permanent broadcast. All its spaces and territories are communications. Entering a territory implies the acceptance of a framing communication… The more free and the more complex a society, the more will it have to spatially order and orient its participants via perceived thresholds and semiotic clues rather than via physical barriers and channels. Background
The photo of “El Tecnológico de Monterrey” was taken by Ricardo Elizondo circa 1950.
The “Zona TEC” began in 1950, when Eugenio Garza Sada founded the first campus for Tecnológico de Monterrey, attracting new habitants to a formerly empty zone in Monterrey. In time, this street-like area became a commercial hotspot

Intro
The site is located at Distrito TEC, in the southern part of Monterrey. The target area is Ave. Del Estado, due to its decadence related to its lack of relation between its habitants, lack of elderly people, and the floating condition of students. To fight this, it has been proposed to transform and create a new identity for the zone, changing the focus of its operations.

Site Analysis The surrounding context for the site must have a relation to the project, for such purpose, several factors have been taken into account: density, adjacent circulation, future habitants, localization of already existing trees (for it is not advisable to ignore them in any architecture project), etc. The use of automobiles will be completely omitted, implementing new alternate routes between spots in the neighboring area. The purpose of this is to encourage a public life, for this is one of the main routes to TEC. Monterrey is well known for its unstable climate dominated by “extreme heat. This characteristic gives the floor a tendency to dry quicker, creating a general fragmentation on the ground, which leads to fissures. Fragmentation of the soil has its own parameters which create an interesting flux of air, giving the project some advantages, such as a natural air vent. interesting airflows, which may provide advantages to the project. Thus, the ability to eject heat.

Research For the creation of the algorithm, a study of the fragmentation of the soil was ran. The results tell that in a dry weather like Monterrey’s, the ground tends to shatters due to different factors such as moisture, heat and soil contractions. When the soil is dry, particles tend to generate tension, which, in turn create fissures. The Lee model was used for the calculation of the propagation of the fragmentation on the soil, through these formulas:
Acting circumferential tension evaluated as a factor of the intensity in critical tension and the radial length of the critical tensions. To apply these formulas to the algorithm, a study of the Voronoi system is applied for the representation of fragmentation. Some advantages were found to a fissured system, such as the upwards flux of air, and a more fluid circulation of winds in the lower parts of the fissured system.

The values of sinking pressure were gathered, taking the uniformity and specific weight (18 KN/m3) of the terrain, giving a result of 7° for the inclination.
11
Relation Site The terrain is fracture as a way to fragmentize space. Through the rule of tree caring in the iteration, polygons are chosen to be edifications or green areas. An extraction of the polygon is made, and an offset is made to it through an specific measure to generate clusters, thus, getting a greater light input and generating interior yards.
To have a better relation between edifications, apertures are made through the rule that allows the most apertures possible.
The inclination value is given by the summer solstice.

Interactions are important for a parametric project due to any modification in the algorithm returning interactions of the project, in which case, formal questions are analyzed, making the process more convenient.

Structural Logic
Floors are generated for the building.
Once the floor are present, they are repeated to reach the shape given by the algorithm.
Columns are created, which height and width are given by the algorithm.
Finally, both are interpositioned to generate the structure.

Sustainable qualities
The volumes of the buildings are inclinated to counter the sun on the southeast, generating shades. Clusters are created in the buildings to attract natural light to the complex. With the incorporation of walk ways, car routes are reduced, which benefits the future habitants and commerce. Through this, more interaction between people is generated, which, in turn generates more security. Important trees will be spared, otherwise, it wouldn’t be a sustainable project, especially in Monterrey which is Mexico’s second most contaminated city. New trees belonging to the region will also be incorporated for they offer a greater resistance to hard weather.

Conclusion
Applying crack parameters, an alternate project was made taking into account the general environment of the site. Through cracks, an optimization of people circulation was reached, and three types of land use were generated (commercial/residential and commercial/office). Through the implementation of green areas, more interaction and convivency will be generated, which, in the midterm, help violence to be mitigated. Complex geometry is not entirely necessary for parametric architecture; simple geometrics with its respective fundament can make a decent parametric project.
