DOWNTOWN PASADENA STEM ACADEMY GRADES SERVED: 6-8
Nested away just feet from the Pasadena City Hall along the famously known Big Bang Theory Way, is a proposed middle school specializing in STEM, gearing towards serving students in grades 6 through 8. The project is built on a narrowing site that is wedged between two existing commercial buildings and an apartment complex on the other side leaving two alleys on both east and west sides of the building. The project responds to the narrowing site through organization of a grid laid over the site allowing for the extracting of geometries. To maximize efficiency of the building’s footprint, the idea for this project was to layout the most important space throughout the site from the larger end to the narrower end. This process allowed for quality spaces that served as smaller collaborative spaces situated along circulation pathways. These labs and collaborative spaces are lifted above to the second floor which are accessed along Big Bang Theory Way through the feature stair starting at the ground floor. The building is primarily enclosed with triple pane low emissivity glazing that is cladded with a perforated metal system, designed to maximize natural light into the more prominent spaces on the interior. At the highest level, is an extensive green roof serving as an outdoor science garden and recreation area. Adjacent this area is the grand feature of the building which is the great room, left with no metal cladding and only by the glazing system, allows for a pure glass box intended for multi-purpose use, entertainment, or demonstration.
