ifteen years ago, I was honored to work with a team of dedicated individuals on a new fundraising initiative to benefit Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Over the years, the Wolfson Children’s Challenge has raised over 4 million dollars to purchase life-saving equipment and technology for their most critical patients. Each year, the Wolfson Children’s Challenge also honors 55 current and former patients, known as the “Wolfson 55,” who represent the wide range of services Wolfson Children’s Hospital offers to children of Northeast Florida, South Georgia and the region. This year, the Wolfson Children’s Challenge is moving to a new location – Nocatee Station Field. Join me on January 27th for the 1-mile fun run. The event will also feature food and family-friendly activities. To register, scan the QR code on the back of this month’s paper or visit them online at WolfsonChildrensChallenge.com. Kudos to Walmart for offering sensory-friendly shopping hours 7 days a week at all stores in the United States and Puerto Rico. After a back-to-school, Saturdays only test run in select stores, Walmart is now offering sensory-friendly hours from 8am to 10am every day at every store. The Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Centers will soon celebrate 75 years serving our community. With the help of the Junior League of Jacksonville, the Centers began helping those with speech and hearing and/or language disorders in 1949. They put a mobile unit on the road in 1966 and just recently opened a Center in St. Johns. Books to Help Kids Who Are Afraid of the Dark
Community Profile: Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Centers
S
ince 1949 the Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Centers have helped enable families to connect, communicate and care for one another by providing treatment for speech-language and/or hearing disorders. Local speech therapist Sarah Barrett discovered the need for a children’s speech clinic when her practice was unable to meet the growing need for therapy for children. The Junior League of Jacksonville was instrumental in starting the Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Centers. With the aid provided by the Junior League’s sponsorship, the Clinic was able to hire a full-time speech therapist and purchase necessary supplies. Members of the Junior League also volunteered to work in the clinic. Still today, the Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center relies on volunteers to fulfill it’s mission: “to provide the highest quality professional and compassionate care to all individuals with hearing, speech, and/or language disorders in our community, regardless of ability to pay,” . The Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Centers serve the 5-County Jacksonville area. Under the Community Hearing Screening Program, they offer free hearing screenings at community health fairs to reach populations that may otherwise lack access to their facilities due to a lack of time, transportation, or treasure.

Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center’s experience in screening preschoolers in Duval County indicates that this number is approximately 57 percent, 47 percentage points higher than the national average. In partnership with the Kids Hope Alliance, the Tiny Talkers Program adopts a two-generational approach to addressing socioeconomic inequities related to speech-language disorders by providing free treatment to children from low-income backgrounds with communication disorders, as well as educational workshops and materials to their caregivers.

7 Ways to Elevate Your State of Mind Look Inside, Not Outside When you look outside and worry about what people think, focus on the outcome, feel the expectations and pressure from others and believe you are a victim of your circumstances, this lowers your state of mind. When you look inside and realize the truth, that you create your life from the inside out and that you have the power to transform your circumstances, this raises your state of mind. So don’t look outside at your circumstances. Look inside to your heart, mind, soul and the power you possess to create a better circumstance. I explain this in more detail in The One Truth.
● You are here for a reason. There is a plan for your life. You were never meant to be average. ● You have a desire to be great because deep down you know there is greatness within you. Appreciate To Elevate
When you appreciate, you elevate. You elevate your state of mind, you elevate your mood, you elevate your performance, and you elevate the people around you. Since you can’t be stressed and thankful at the same time, when you practice gratitude, you counter the stress that drains you. Instead of focusing on what you lack, you appreciate what you have. When You Experience Doubt, Choose Trust Instead of feeling small, you are thankful for it all. Choose Love, Not Fear Love is the ultimate way to live with a high state of mind. Love is more powerful than fear. Love casts out fear. Love is inside out. Fear is outside in. Love radiates from us. Fear tries to invade us. We create and live from the love inside of us to overcome the fear that tries to sabotage us. When you focus on love, fear dissipates. So, instead of worrying about the outcome, love the process. Instead of fearing what people think, focus on loving what you do. Instead of fearing making a mistake, love the moment and opportunity you have. Instead of living in fear, choose to live with love. You will be stronger and more powerful as you take on your daily struggles and the challenges in the world.
Remember You Are ONE Not Separate The One Truth is that everything in life is influenced by oneness and separateness. For example, a team that is divided is disconnected and powerless. A team that is united is connected and powerful. The same applies to you. When you feel a sense of oneness, connection and unity, you feel strong. When you feel separate from yourself, from others and spiritually you feel disconnected, negative and weak. It’s why all mental health disorders report feelings of being isolated, disconnected, alone and separate. It’s why the root for the Greek word of “anxious” means to separate and divide. You will be more negative the more separate you feel. The more connected you feel the more positive you will be. My hope is that you will keep reminding yourself that you are ONE. Montessori for Young Minds W
hen considering Montessori education for children, parents often think the best place to begin is in the primary years, typically ages 4-5. However, 90% of a child’s brain develops prior to the age of five in what Maria Montessori referred to as the “absorbent mind”. During this period of development, a child’s brain quickly and effortlessly absorbs everything from the environment naturally, as it becomes part of who they are. Montessori also referred to these periods of development as “sensitive periods” in which core skills and abilities are developed, and are developed more rapidly than in any other period. With these critical periods of development in mind during infancy and early toddlerhood, Montessori educators focus on nurturing this development and building the cognitive and physical skills of growth that will be needed for future learning. This is accomplished through thoughtful and careful creation of a prepared environment in the classroom.
In such an environment, there would be the freedom (for an infant/toddler) to safely explore and learn through discovery, using their senses along with their natural inclination towards curiosity. The expression “follow the child” is often used in reference to Montessori education because as the child’s interests may change, you can find materials to take advantage of those interests and expand their knowledge and exploration. For example, if a toddler discovers a lizard on the playground and becomes fascinated by it, a Montessori educator may then decide to stock the classroom with reptile puzzles, lizard books, reptile models, etc. to allow the child the opportunity to further explore his newfound discovery. Prepared environments are often calm, peaceful and inviting with plenty of space for movement. Within this space there would be orderly shelves and baskets arranged in a

manner that is easily accessible to the children, so they are able to explore independently. There are usually indoor climbing ramps/stairs, mirrors/bars to encourage gross motor development as well as plentiful variations of manipulatives for fine motor development. A Montessori environment also includes ample opportunities for language development through music, art, books and a print rich classroom. Infants and toddlers interact with teachers and peers to gain exposure to natural absorption of understanding communication and language by learning to express their needs/wants, feelings and ideas; and by learning to read facial expressions, body language and social cues. These forms of communication in the classroom also help the infant/toddler develop much needed social skills in interacting with adults and peers. It is never too early to consider the develop-
mental growth and needs of your child. Keep in mind that the most absorbent period of growth occurs from birth to age three. Walmart Makes Sensory-Friendly Hours Permanent

fter a successful trial period, the nation’s largest retailer says it will offer sensory-friendly hours each day at every one of its stores in the United States and Puerto Rico. Walmart announced that it’s committed to altering the shopping experience from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. daily at stores nationwide to better meet the needs of customers with disabilities. At these times, the company said that stores will lower their overhead lights, turn off radios and replace moving pictures with static ones on televisions. “During these hours, we hope our customers and associates will find the stores to be a little easier on the eyes and ears,” wrote Walmart executives Denise Malloy Deaderick, Cedric Clark and Alvis Washington in an announcement about the expanded offering. Walmart held sensory-friendly hours at most
of its stores on Saturdays during the back-toschool shopping season and said it received “overwhelmingly positive” feedback about the pilot program from both customers and employees. “These changes may have seemed small to some, but for others they transformed the shopping experience,” Deaderick, Clark and Washington indicated. “Our biggest piece of feedback? Keep it going!” Walmart leaders said that they are continuing to welcome input on how to enhance sensory-friendly efforts in their stores. Google Opens Access to Conversational AI Tool Bard to Teens

“We also recognize that many people, including teens, are not always aware of hallucinations in LLMs. So the first time a teen asks a fact-based question, we’ll automatically run our double-check response feature, which helps evaluate whether there’s content across the web to substantiate Bard’s response,” wrote Tulsee Doshi, Google’s product lead for Responsible AI, in the blog post. “Soon, this feature will automatically run when any new Bard user asks their first factual question. And for teens, we’ll actively recommend using double-check to help them develop information literacy and critical thinking skills.”
n November 16th, Google opened up access to Bard, its conversational AI tool, to teens in most countries around the world. Teens who meet the minimum age requirement (13 in the United States) to manage their own Google Account will be able to access the chatbot in English, with support for more languages to come in the future. The expanded launch comes with “safety features and guardrails” to protect teens, Google says.
Google notes that Bard is also a useful learning tool, as it allows teens to dig deeper into topics and help them better understand complex concepts. For instance, you can ask Bard to help you come up with an idea for your science fair, or brush up on your history by learning about a specific time period. Google is also bringing a math learning experience into Bard, that will allow anyone, including teens, to type or upload a picture of a math equation. Instead of simply spitting out the answer to the math equation, Bard will share a step-bystep explanation of how to solve it. Plus, Bard can help with data visualization, which means it can generate charts from tables or data that is included in a prompt. For instance, a teen can ask Bard to create a bar chat to display how many hours they volunteered over the past few months so they can get a visual understanding. Google is opening up access to the chatbot with some guardrails in place to protect users. Bard has been trained to recognize topics that are inappropriate for teens and has guardrails that are designed to help prevent unsafe content, such as illegal or age-gated sub-

The onboarding experience will also give teens the option to turn it on or off. The announcement came a few weeks after Google opened up its generative AI search experience to teenagers. Raines educator selected as AP of the Year, highlighted for outreach to community
Born and raised on Jacksonville’s Eastside, Brandie Stallings has made it a priority to connect with students and families in the often-under-served community.
This includes starting a “Girls on the Move” program for at-risk ninth and 10th
grade girls; hosting parent information meetings at community centers on the Eastside, rather than at the school, to increase access for families; and spearheading a “Pushing G for Graduation” campaign that encouraged students to become graduation-ready. Her outreach to students and families was highlighted as one of many reasons Stallings was selected as Team Duval’s Assistant Principal of the Year. Surprised with the announcement this week, Stallings shared that she was overwhelmed but honored to represent her school and community. “It totally caught me off guard,” Stallings told district and community leaders who had gathered at Raines to honor her. “I am glad to be acknowledged for the work that I do at William M. Raines and the North and Eastside communities, and to be a good representation and reflection of the hard work that our lead-

Although the FDA continues their effort to reduce contamination of pet food, pet owners should be mindful of the potential risks. You can lower your risk of getting a foodborne illness from contaminated pet food and treats by following these simple and safe handling instructions:

Tips for Buying Pet Food • Buy pet food products (cans, pouches, or bags) that are in good condition. Check the packaging for visible signs of damage, such as dents, tears, and discolorations.

Use a clean scoop, spoon, or cup instead. Use the scooping utensil only for scooping pet food. • Throw out old or spoiled pet food in a safe way, for example, by placing it in a securely tied plastic bag in a covered trash can.
If you want to store dry pet food in another storage container, put the entire bag into the container rather than pour the kibble directly into it.

THINGS TO DO Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience Thru January 7 Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience is a cinematic immersive exhibition that takes guests on a journey to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time. Journey to modern-day Egypt and see wonders of the ancient world like the Temple at Karnak and the Great Sphinx. Experience ancient history come to life in a dramatic and immersive projection experience. Through nine distinct multi-sensory galleries, Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience unlocks the 3,300 year old story of King Tut in an evolution of immersive experiences. Toddler & Me Yoga December 3, 3pm to 4pm Toddler & Me Yoga classes are available to toddlers ages 16-36 months. This class lets you reconnect with your body while enjoying time with your baby. Stretch, bond, and breathe with your baby in this special yoga class designed for mother and child. Meet other moms and babies while you strengthen and support your postpartum body & mind with specifically chosen asanas. Every class will devote time to gentle and strengthening poses, done together between mother and child.
