We are fortunate to live in an area rich in history and natural assets, but also with a thriving business community that is committed to making Northeast Florida the best it can be. From promoting business-friendly policy to entrepreneurial education and top-notch events, the Chamber has played a key role in making our region a great place for companies to invest and prosper. None of this would be possible without the incredible commitment of members and volunteers like you. In the pages ahead, you’ll see how your dollars were put to work in 2015 and the impact they have had on our community. It was an honor to serve as the JAX Chamber Chair in 2015, and I look forward to continuing to work with the Chamber and its members in the years to come. Sincerely, John A. The Voice of Business JAXBIZ — the nonpartisan political action committee working to elect businessfriendly leaders to local and state office — raised and invested more than $254,000 to help elect candidates in the 2015 Jacksonville city elections. The dollars were used for: Direct mail n Get-out-the-vote efforts n Meet-and-greet for candidates and voters n Radio, newspaper and online advertising n

Seventeen of the 21 candidates endorsed by JAXBIZ were elected —including Mayor Lenny Curry, Sheriff Mike Williams, and 15 of 19 members of the City Council. JAXBIZ also held elected officials accountable, alerting them they are being scored on “Key Votes” relating to economic development and other important issues on which the JAX Chamber Board of Directors has taken a position.

The Heart of the City A top priority of the Chamber is to promote investment and business activity in Downtown Jacksonville: n

The Chamber hosts an annual trip of Downtown leaders and advocates to visit another city and to talk about what worked — and what didn’t — in its Downtown. In 2015, the group went to Detroit, where the arts community and entrepreneurs are making a move in a long-struggling urban core. The Board of Directors voted for the city to “Think Big” on the proposals for the Shipyards, recognizing there’s an opportunity for transformational projects along the St. Johns River and we should settle for no less. Chamber leaders convened meetings with developers working on major Southbank projects to facilitate conversation and make sure everyone is working together to maximize river access and take advantage of the public investment along the Southbank Riverwalk. .com

Downtown leaders from Jacksonville traveled to Detroit in May 2015 to learn from Detroit city leaders on the success they’ve had re-invigorating their urban core with the creative community and entrepreneurs.

MEMBER VALUE

Building on Chamber Connections Burnell Goldman was on the job less than two months when a Chamber Trustee membership renewal landed on his desk. Looking at the bottom line, the new general manager of the Omni Hotel wasn’t convinced it was worth it. He quickly met with Misty Galeani, the JAX Chamber’s member relations director who convinced him to ‘give it a year.’

3,012 MEMBER BUSINESSES

“The Trustee program gives you easy access to people in the community, I didn’t have to plan separate meetings when I moved to town. They’re all there in one room together,” he said. “Now I know how right Misty was. I’ll be involved with the Chamber as long as I am in Jacksonville.”

FOR JAX CHAMBER BUSINESSES

“The Chamber fights for us, working to bring new business and people to town. New people eventually means more business for the restaurant. I knew I had to have skin in the game,” she said.

Goldman was sold. He’s a believer in what the Chamber can do for businesses and the city as a whole.

It wasn’t a need for exposure that drew Christine Wier to the Chamber 15 years ago. She and her husband were already franchise owners of a local Chick-fil-A with a big national ad budget. For Christine, it was a civic duty.
