MEMBER CONNECTIONS
Chamber Helps ‘Jacksonville Sparkle’ It was a need for connections that drew Paris Hurley to the Chamber in September 2008. She’d started her business in January of that year and was eager to see the business grow. Her first cleaning contract was a night job, so Hurley made the most of her day by joining multiple Chamber Councils and attending Chamber events. After one year, she hired her first employee and bought the first company van.

Former RS&H CEO Leerie Jenkins, Jr. was the first to connect with the Chamber in the 1980s and went on to become Board Chair in 1998. “Leerie created a culture at RS&H of giving back to the communities where we have offices,” said Bottaro. Bottaro and RS&H are making Leerie proud boasting company-wide involvement with the JAX Chamber. There are RS&H employees involved at every level, from the JAX Chamber IT Council to the Board of Directors.

Bottaro said there’s a direct link between new business that came about by building relationships through the Chamber. “There’s an incredible value to a Chamber membership, it really is a twoway street,” he said.

Keys to Building Relationships, Trust Ray Driver has been part of the JAX Chamber for more than 15 years, involved with the Trustee Program, Board of Governors and Board of Directors, all with a focus on public policy. During that time, he’s seen the Chamber take the lead and work to move Northeast Florida forward.
Ray Driver Partner Driver, McAfee, Peek & Hawthorne
“The Chamber doesn’t take a passive role. They’re on the forefront of what’s going on in the city. Working with the Chamber, you’re working to move the needle on important issues,” Driver said. Driver says the Chamber’s influence on policy issues such as pension reform and an inclusive HRO is vital to the community as a whole.
“The Chamber leadership understands the importance of weighing in on these important policy issues. Working together we’re pushing Jacksonville to be the best place to live, work and play.”

Kristy Meeler moved to Jacksonville in late 2010 to work for a Fortune 500 company. Once here, she realized she had just a handful of local business relationships. “Financial advising is really all about relationships. I knew I had to join the Chamber to broaden my business circle and did so in 2011,” Meeler said. In 2013 she founded Avondale Wealth Advisors with her business partner, Laura Brown. They made it a point to immerse themselves in the Chamber Councils and committees. After a business analysis in 2015, they found something surprising. Going over the list client by client, it all boiled down to the Chamber.

2016 Chamber Chair Audrey Moran put forth the challenge to “Dream Big” about Downtown’s greatest asset, the St. Johns River. Destination Riverfront: Activating the St. Johns was borne from the 35th Leadership Trip and was held at Haskell in June. The program introduced Oklahoma experts who shared how city leaders transformed the Oklahoma River to offer kayaking, paddle boarding, and built a $45 million RIVERSPORT Rapids. The Chamber hosts an annual trip of Downtown leaders and advocates to visit another city to talk about what worked and what didn’t in its Downtown. In 2016, the group visited Kansas City where innovation is creating a resurging Downtown. In September, Intuition Ale Works opened its new location in the heart of the Sports and Entertainment Complex on Bay Street. A number of Downtown development projects are expected to open in 2017, including Cowford Chophouse and Bold City Brewery, also on Bay Street. .com

“As a nonprofit, networking is vital to our organization and the JAX Chamber Trade Show provided us just the right environment. We were able to establish relationships with local businesses that had never hosted blood drives and to reconnect with those who haven’t held them in a while.” — Sandy Janson, OneBlood, Donor Recruitment Manager
