GOOD MONTH FOR

Editor: Jacqui Barry

A

…8 year old Alex Turlik who played in the ODLM Pro-Am; what a great opportunity and thrilling occasion for someone so young. He was joined by Clement Flaherty and Aashka Desai who finished second with their Pro Tandi Cunningham. Well done to the juniors ..Bill Ayres who reached his goal of 20 by 60...he just turned 60 and is very proud to have got his handicap down to 20 which was his target. His next target is to reduce his handicap by one shot each year for the next 10 years!

A FEW RULES… A number of rules situations have cropped up recently so here’s a clarification on some of the more recent ones..

Q

Shirley hits her 2nd shot on the 4th of the Faldo, thins it over the green and believes it might be in a water hazard behind the green. She decides to play a provisional ball. What is the ruling?

A

The provisional ball is now in play since Rule 27-2a/2 prohibits a provisional ball in these circumstances. She would have had to check first if her ball was in the water.

Q

Jenny’s ball lies in a bunker and a rake has been left in another part of the bunker. Prior to making her stroke in the bunker, the player retrieves the rake. Having lifted the rake, Jenny smooth’s the footprints that she has just created, and some others in the process, what is the ruling?

A

There is no penalty provided the smoothing was done for the sole purpose of caring for the course and nothing was done to breach Rule 13-2 in relation to the players next stroke (e.g. improving area of intended swing). If however a player is regularly creating and smoothing footprints close to her ball prior to making strokes from a bunker, it would be appropriate to question the player about the purpose of the smoothing. If the player is smoothing the surface to gain knowledge of the condition of the bunker the player would be penalised.

BAD MONTH FOR ...one of our ladies who was supposed to be lunching with some friends at the Rivington Grill so she drove to Dubai Mall and after having a chat with the Manager about the weather, her jewellery and all sorts of chit chat, he then told her that the group of ladies she was joining were not there but at the other Rivington Grill at the Madinat Jumeirah...ouch!! The Madinat is also quite close to where she lives so a long drive across town for nothing!

Issue: December 2012

s I am writing this the Omega Dubai Ladies’ Masters has just finished with the newly crowned ShanShan Feng posting a tournament score of -21 which is the record so far in the seven years the tournament has been held; the previous record was -18 by Annike Sorenstam. Another record was made by Netherland’s Dewi Claire Schreefel who posted a fantastic score of 63 to beat the previous record of 64. “It feels nice to finish off in such a dominant matter,” said a Feng, the only player from China to win on the LPGA Tour. “This is my third wire-to-wire victory since August last year.” “This (Omega Dubai Ladies Masters) is like a major on the Ladies European Tour. I have always heard about it that it’s very nice and everyone speaks English! ”I love the (Majlis) course, I love the people here,” said the 23-year-old. “I think I putted very solid the whole week and that was the key to my victory,” It was a good tournament but somehow very quiet around the course in terms of spectators. However those who were there were treated to some great golf and a presentation on the 18th green by Princess Haya together with HH Sheikha Al Jalila Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Well done to ‘golf in Dubai’ and all those who were involved in the organising of the event as well as marshals, staff, hosts, caddies etc. There seem to be many new faces in the ladies’ section this season, so welcome to any newcomers; if you have been a member for some time and you play with someone new, please try to introduce them to others on a Monday morning and ensure that anyone you play with sits with you for the presentation. It’s a vey daunting prospect as a ‘newbie’ to walk into a room full of women who all seem to know each other…I remember it well -all of 24 years or so ago. There have been a few issues with rules lately; if in doubt, remember that you can always play two balls for that hole, record the scores and check the rules with Barney when your round is finished (except in matchplay of course). Congratulations to Kate Phillips, Membership Services Manager and to Pro Dave Adams who got married on 11th December so best wishes to you. Another member of staff, Lucy from the locker-room is getting married on 8th January in Sri Lanka so congratulations to you and Guus also. A number of the ladies are travelling to Sri lanka for the occasion and I believe Najla Bartette is going to be Maid-of-Honour. I’m sure there will be lots of photos from both weddings in next month’s Chipping In.
