I take this opportunity to reiterate the importance of members playing their part in maintaining the course by filling in the divots on fairways, raking bunkers and repairing pitch marks on greens. The number of unrepaired pitch marks on the greens during a recently held Emirates Golf Club tournament was disappointing to observe. I urge all members to take responsibility to rectify this by

I would like to thank all members for your generous contributions to the Christmas raffle; all proceeds are put into the Junior Colleague Fund at the Club so your gifts give tangible expression to your appreciation of the team and acknowledge the excellent work done by them all year round. In closing, I encourage you to make the most of the pleasant weather by playing golf on our magnificent courses. May every round be rewarding in all aspects, both sporting and personal. The 2015 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, the 10th edition of the annual season ending event of the Ladies European Tour, held from 9th to 12th December, was a resounding success. Third time winner Shanshan Feng provided another exhibition of her exceptional talent by notching up a 21-under par 267. Feng not only equalled her own recordwinning score in 2012 but also, with an emphatic 12-shot lead, set a new record as the largest winning margin in the event’s history.

COMPETITION RESULTS

Information regarding tickets for members and tickets to purchase, as well as information on bag storage and locker room access will be published soon. Of course, last month we were treated to the Ladies European Tour end-of-season event at Emirates Golf Club, the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters which is always interesting to watch. Congratulations to the ‘golf in DUBAi’ team on a another successful tournament which saw Shanshan Feng winning her third title here with a score of -21. There was a lot of interest in young Paige Spiranac who recently turned Pro and received an invitation to this event from ‘golf in DUBAi’. Although she failed to make the cut, she certainly brought a lot of media attention to the tournament; her caddy was our own Club Professional, Bryan Smyth who thoroughly enjoyed his two days out on the course. Our former junior at Emirates Golf Club, Matt Turner, caddied for runner-up Thidapa Suwannapura and Club member Andy Robinson caddied for fourth placed Jade Scheaffer so there was a lot of involvement from our members, not forgetting of course, all the marshals, scorers and recorders. The Ladies European tour players are mostly all very friendly and took time out to speak to many members and spectators and have photos taken with them.

4 in’s Lady Capta Message

December was another very busy month, with lots of events to fit in around the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters - congratulations to Shanshan Feng on her decisive victory. We certainly had a lot of fun with both the Ladies Christmas Scramble and the Mixed Christmas

Scramble. Many thanks to Chef Nicholas and all the F&B team for the fabulous Christmas lunch that was provided for the ladies. We are very fortunate to have delicious lunches catered every single Monday during prize giving after our weekly competitions; with everyone’s busy lives I can understand that sometimes it is difficult to stay and socialise after the game, but it would be wonderful to see more ladies taking the time to stay for a while to enjoy the food and to congratulate the winning players. Next month we are planning a short golfing trip to Oman which is open to all lady members of the Club. Thanks to Rhys James for all his efforts in organising this event. We will leave on Tuesday 23rd February, returning on Friday

26th February. The trip includes two rounds of golf at Almouj Golf course, designed by Greg Norman, providing breathtaking views of the Sea of Oman and of the Hajar Mountains. At a cost of approximately AED 3,000 including the golf, three nights accommodation and all travel costs this is excellent value for money. I’m quite sure that we will have a great time and this is an opportunity not to be missed; please contact Rhys or myself for more details and be sure to sign up by 7th January to ensure a seat on the luxury bus (with toilet!) for the epic road trip! The One Inch Drive Efficiency is the key to power

O

ver the last few years I have been fascinated by martial arts and the close link with golf. My particular interest is towards Muay Tai, how power originates and how efficiently it is delivered in the movement. These are high priorities when it comes to martial arts and golf.

IADC Golf Tournament at Emirates Golf Club wins Best Corporate Tournament of the Year in the Sport 360 Middle East Golf Awards 2015

T

he annual International Association of Drilling Contractors SAPC Golf Tournament held annually at Emirates Golf Club, has officially been recognised as the ‘Best Corporate Tournament of the Year’ at the recent Sport 360 Middle East Golf Awards 2015, held at the prestigious One & Only Royal Mirage in Dubai. The Sport 360 Middle East Golf Awards (MEGA) recognizes the achievements of the region’s golf bodies and reflects the ultimate ambitions of everyone involved in golf in the Middle East. The 2015 edition of the MEGAs was supported by Singha Corporation, Dubai Sports City, Troon Golf, IP Global, and Hydroturf. Emirates Golf Club, managed by Dubai Golf under wasl Asset Management, remains an iconic golfing venue in the United Arab Emirates. The Club was the first all grass course in the Middle East when it opened in 1988 and today boasts world-class golfing facilities on the championship Majlis and Faldo courses, combined with casual and fine-dining restaurants, swimming, fitness and recreation facilities making it a renowned all-encompassing leisure hub. The International Association of Drilling Contractors SAPC Golf Tournament was first held in 2006 at Emirates Golf Club with the most recent and 19th tournament taking place in March 2015. The IADC

Golf Tournament is the largest corporate event staged at Emirates Golf Club each year, attracting golfers from oil and gas companies across the MEGA region. The tournament takes place over two days on the iconic Faldo and Majlis courses at Emirates Golf Club, as 128 teams played a total of 36 holes this year. Emirates Golf Club, Gulf Arena and the International Association of Drilling Contractors SAPC Committee work together each year to host this prestigious event. The three entities work together to produce a fantastic experience for all competitors. This year, 512 rounds were played each day and a total of 1,024 rounds were played through the two day tournament. The gala dinner on the final evening attracted 1,360 guests in 2015. The entertainment and fireworks are managed by Gulf Arena. Many guests travel from all over the world including the USA to attend the prestigious event, which contributes to increasing tourism in Dubai. “It is an honour to win this prestigious awards especially in the same year that we celebrated our 20th anniversary. This award has only been possible with generous contributions from our sponsors over the years that have allowed the event to grow to what it is today, along with the support and flawless organisational skills of Emirates Golf Club, Gulf Arena and our Event

Efficiency is key, I like to give my students an analogy of Bruce Lee and how he used to deliver so much force. Bruce Lee became extremely well known for his one inch punch. This is how we should approach power needed in the golf swing. Power does not come from simply rotating more in the backswing or trying to move those hips in the through swing but rather, we need to understand where the force originates and how to maximise that force through efficient moves. If we think of a simple punch from a person

with limited technique, we would generally see movement of their body with the arm towards the target, increasing the difficulty to correctly use the forces from the ground or deliver accuracy. Bruce Lee however, applied his muscles to move his body. An interesting study by a Dr Ed Roberts, from the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London, found that there are distinctive features of the brain structure of people who apply this practice. The same can be seen in the golf swing, with what we refer to as lateral movement. Engaging the muscles to fire thus moving the body would be far more accurate and powerful. Two common errors are rotating away from the ball in the back swing and turning the hips too early in the downswing. Pictured below you can see an incorrect

lateral move away from the ball. This in many cases originates by incorrect information i.e. to rotate during the backswing, which is misleading. The movement is more like a coil or helix away from the ground with the body, allowing the club to work around and up to the top of the backswing in an efficient manner around the centre line of the body. It is from this position forces can then be applied down into the ground which will move the body through the correct positions. Turning the hips from the top of the backswing would move the body into poor position where the club would be left behind the body and would therefore have to be dragged through the impact area and what would be a flash of speed at the ball from the wrists. This move looks fast but is very inefficient in delivering power or a consistent flight.

Management Team, who continually deliver year in, year out . We thank all involved, past and present and look forward to another fantastic event in March 2016”, commented Neil Howie, Business Development Manager of the IADC SAPC. Having recently been presented with a prestigious Emirates Energy Award and the award for the Best Course in the Middle East at the 2015 Asian Golf Monthly Awards, as well as becoming the first club in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region to become GEO Certified, this accolade further confirms Emirates Golf Clubs position at the forefront of golf in the Middle East region. Andrew Whitelaw, Club Manager of the Emirates Golf Club explained; “Emirates Golf Club is honoured to have the International Association of Drilling Contractors SAPC Golf Tournament recognised as the Best Corporate Tournament of the Year. The club is a premium leisure destination for tourists and residents of the UAE and flies the flag for the country as the annual host of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. We are therefore delighted that our efforts have been officially recognised with the prestigious Sport 360 Middle East Golf Awards.” For further information about Dubai Golf and its golf and leisure operations, visit www.dubaigolf.com.

Often I will be asked about important moves in the golf swing such as, “How do I start the downswing? Hips rotating or moving forwards first?” The fact is there are many important moves in the golf swing and the question I often ask is how do we trigger those moves, what part of my body enables those moves, what part of my body hinders those moves. The key is to create a golf swing with only one controlling element. Turning the muscles on and loading the shoulders correctly in the backswing will enable better movements on the downswing.

The same principles are true when it comes to all forms of exercise; when working out, try to initiate the movement from the particular muscle group you are working on. There are many different ways to work out but you’ll be surprised how much we rely on moving the body first instead of efficiently firing the muscles from the start to initiate the move.

Professional Jonathan Craddock’s pick for future success

Junior Links

Sean Cooper

S

ean Cooper, eight years of age has been working with Professional Jonathan Craddock from the age of three.

He was a star from day one hitting the plastic clubs with such ease. He is very dedicated towards his practice, quite extraordinarily he can instantly work the new motions into his swing producing immediate results.

Reactions Ground Force

P

rofessional Jonathan Craddock and Performance Specialist Torsten Kanzmeier spent the week of the Dubai Ladies Masters working with members of the Junior Programme on the importance of GFR (Golf Force Reactions). Every one of the top players in the game knows and demonstrates the main attributes of GFR which are stability, power and consistency. Jonathan has been working with junior programmes for children for over ten years, specialising in elite development. Golf has always been a little late on the developmental of fundamental movement skills to improve golf performance. These skills are a major part of the Dubai Golf Junior Programme due to their importance in developing movements and also understanding movements.

A huge influence on Sean’s success so far would be the time his parents have devoted to him, allowing him time to playfully practise and develop his game. Sean travelled the globe this summer playing in a number of events including the eight years of age US Kids Golf World Championship in which he finished 16th, competing against 1500 players from 40 countries. The following week Sean competed in the US Kids Golf British Championship where he finished in second place. Wrapping up the summer in style, Sean finished in top spot in the Wee Wonders at St Andrews with a record winning score. Sean has great potential for future stardom but his little brother Ruairi is hot on his heals. Sean has been a great role model to his brother who has also recently started with me for lessons. To be honest the little one is teaching me - with the environment the parents have created with playful practice there is not a better way to create stars for the future. It has been a true pleasure and I feel honoured to be part of their development.

Junior Programme

WEE WONDER

I

love golf so much - it’s not just a game, for me, it’s my life. I am super lucky to be given such a good (great) life because I get so many opportunities to play and practise golf so much. I like my age (eight) because I have many friends but I really love the number ONE. Being number one in the world would mean I could help others and give to poorer countries that don’t have a good life…even now I try to give to others. My education is awesome because I try a lot and I listen so I get to learn more. My background is better than Seve’s! I got into golf by watching my Dad. I am already looking forward to playing in the European Championship in Scotland, British Open, US Kids World Golf Championship at Pinehurst and the Adidas Wee Wonders Final at St Andrews, a course I love and I won this event last year. by Sean Cooper

T

Behind the scenes

ogether with his amazing parents Sean has a varied schedule playing many other sports. It shows in his golf and his ability to follow instruction. His ability to control his fundamental movement skills is quite extraordinary which has to be attributed to his upbringing. Due to the limited play outdoors in this part of the world it is something that unfortunately we don’t see as much as we would like. We certainly take measures in the Dubai Golf Junior Programme to make sure all children gain the necessary skills to develop their games.

Dubai Ladies Masters with our DGJP children Members of the Dubai Golf Junior Programme were in attendance last month at the Star Clinic of the Dubai Golf Ladies Masters. It’s a wonderful intimate session where the spectators can get really close to the players, ask questions and see how the players hit the ball the way they do.

TORSTEN

O

ur Mental Performance Coach Torsten Kanzmeier is a master of ‘internal martial arts’. With the highest principles of ‘internal martial arts’ he has developed a unique powerful style of coaching to build up your inner power. It is about learning new skills of thinking and a feeling of awareness. Some people think, “Why do I need a mind coach, I´m not mentally sick?” Or, “I don’t want someone looking into my mind…!”

13

KANZMEIER

fascinating fragments remain, a humanly and spiritually compelling approach to martial arts is hard to retrieve.

Mind coaching in general, is a way to learn the right way of thinking to reach your goal. Everything starts with the right way of thinking. If you don’t have it, your programme of failing has already been written. If you want to be better, you have to learn to use your mind in the right way.

Why is internal martial arts related to golf?

Some martial arts styles are used as weapons and it is all about connecting with your weapon as if it is a part of your body, your movement. A samurai master is more in control of his sword than anyone else. He has learned the inner connection with the sword. Torsten teaches you to get the inner connection to your golf club. If you are interested in more information, feel free to contact Torsten on +971 55 707 5421 or email TorstenKanzmeier@gmail.com Reference from Harvard Professor, Marty Cohen Torsten’s prowess as a martial artist and as a teacher, puts him in a position to make a worldchanging contribution that could bring one of humanity’s great achievements to many people. The internal martial arts, cultivated over centuries, show a way towards a degree of bodily power and harmony that is inconceivable by normal standards. At their best, these arts establish an attunement between the embodied self and its environment that culminates in great human stature but conditions in the modern world that promote the easy dissemination of goods can also lead to their depreciation, dilution and distortion. In the case of the esoteric methods of fighting and selfcultivation, these dangers are aggravated by longstanding reticence about teaching a practice conferring powers that could be misused. The transmission of the forms and methods in China, the centre for many of the internal arts, was interrupted by the cultural revolution, when open practice lead to severe reprisals. Though

Torsten is one of the people who can play an historic role in keeping these practices alive, adapting them to current circumstances, and helping them unfold. A person wanting to become a great martial artist, or to become a better person by developing some genuine skill based on an understanding of internal power and movement, faces tremendous difficulties in this world. Proficient and powerful practitioners are rare; the few with real and balanced knowledge are often ambivalent about teaching the keys to their success, and may require prolonged and demeaning deference to their own power before conveying some of their core insights; the connection is often tenuous between martial power and the good intent that should govern its uses for action in the world and self-transformation. Through the naturalness of his kindness and his gifts as a teacher, Torsten spontaneously addresses all of these issues. He is a profound and generous teacher, who places esoteric power and fighting skill in the service of the simple human goodness and playfulness he embodies. He is clearly a superb fighter, with a lovely gift for communing with others that informs both his fighting and his teaching. That same capacity through which he senses the weakness of an attacker enables him to address his students’ needs, summon their latent strengths, and love their unique qualities, to an extent that is unusual amongst martial artists, the power he wields over

an opponent in battle comes across as an incidental consequence of his capacity for love. Martial artistry is but an instance of the safety and integrity in relating to the world that is his more underlying concern. Torsten has had the good fortune to learn for many years from a remarkable and powerful martial artist named Helmut Barthel, of whom he speaks with great respect. As I understand it, his teacher drew from traditional understandings, but also made significant innovations and discoveries resulting

between perception and feeling is expressed by saying that feelings are responses to perceptions; for example, the perception of a threatening countenance stimulates a feeling of fear. I contend that feelings of another kind, participatory feelings, are interwoven with these responsive feelings; they can be isolated, clarified and enhanced. With this achievement, one lucidly feels the other person, in addition to having feelings about or toward the other person. It is rare for someone to be as brilliant at this mode of participation and discernment as Torsten, and far more rare for someone that adept to wield the skill so respectfully and gently. The respect protects from the invasiveness and intrusiveness that could otherwise happen. The effect of being with Torsten is an enveloping warmth, sweetness, and humility. He has a pure will to teach and to help. He stands in fundamental human equality, not the oppressive hierarchy of power so common in the world at large, and the martial arts world in particular. For the internal martial arts to flourish, traditional structures must be given new functions, and new structures must arise. For those who have learned a viable set of traditional forms, studying with Torsten will enliven them, and bring out the fluidity and power inscribed in the movements as a message to posterity that might be indecipherable without his help. He also communicates a new form devised by his teacher, and is masterfully improvisational throughout the class. Torsten is a great movement artist. It is a joy to watch his potent, purposeful, and graceful movements. He is wonderfully insightful and experimental in finding ways to awaken such movements in his students.

in part from deep shamanic explorations. What is most alive and crucial about internal arts will perish unless it becomes new. Torsten honours his teacher’s example by making what he has been taught his own, giving it fresh life through his singular personality. One aspect of what Torsten calls the shamanic way of martial arts is the capacity to feel another person. For the strict purposes of a martial encounter, he can feel and exploit the other person’s relation to gravity. Philosophy lacks adequate languages for experiences of communion, participation and intuitive knowing. I have coined the term perceptual feeling for a mode in which feeling functions as a perception. Just as a visual image is an image of an object, a perceptual feeling is a feeling of an object. Typically, the relation

Martial arts, in its innermost intention and promise, has always been in the service of becoming a profound person. Being a great fighter can function as a bodily metaphor for being good, but only if a genuine intention links the capacity to defeat an opponent in physical combat to the capacity to defeat smallness of heart, as is the case with Torsten. Then the nuanced response to an opponent becomes a rehearsal for the modulation to each unique life situation that is the basis for a resilient ethics. ell what a whirlwind move! It was certainly very busy but also exciting as we departed Dubai in May 2014, our home for the last 18 years, and relocated to Lafayette, Louisiana, USA. As most of you are aware a job opportunity arose that came as a surprise to me, but ‘fit for the family needs’ as the kids get older. My biggest regret was not being able to fulfil the honour of completing my Captaincy at Emirates Golf Club. Our boys, Cole and Zack, are having a great time at their new school, Ascension Episcopal and we are pleased they are settled and making some great friends. They both had fun playing their first flag football season, although it’s a very different game from the rugby they played in Dubai although the rugby experience certainly helped them master the basics of American Football. Charlotte is enjoying her playschool three days a week so she can also mingle and make friends (and give Katie some free time!!) Typical for Katie and me was that we found an old house and renovated it from top to bottom. We don’t take easy routes!! It was a big undertaking, especially when we were new to the town. However, we are thrilled with the results and we finally cracked open our shipment container and moved in October. We are now settled in our new home and as Christmas and New Year approach, I reflect on how much we miss Emirates Golf Club. We spent so many fun times at the Club over the years and we so miss our friends there who were basically an extended family. The members and staff team played an integral role in our life in Dubai and are all a part of precious memories of our time there. This Christmas we are off for some sun and beach in Florida with family and friends. I hope to indulge in two of my passions, fishing and golf. I’ve not played too much golf in recent months due to a huge list of ‘honey do’s’ for the new house and quite simply, it is not the same playing the courses in our area without my golf buddies. It was not just the courses I loved playing at Emirates Golf Club, but most importantly who I played with that contributed to my enjoyment of the game. This New Year we will be at home in Lafayette with past Emirates Golf Club members Stephen and Beth Jones visiting us from Houston. We will certainly raise a glass to you all at Emirates Golf Club and wish you all a very Happy New Year! I’ll be visiting in early 2016 so I hope see you all very soon.

Exercise Tip Of The Month

Golfer’s Elbow W

ith the golf season in full swing, don’t let the dreaded golfer’s elbow hold you back. When elbow pain lingers for anymore than a week, having it assessed by a physician is advisable.

Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) is the inflammation or irritation of the medial ligaments of the elbow joint. This can be acute (short term and sudden) or chronic (long term) and more resistant to change in its presentation. Unfortunately elbow epicondylitis (tennis or golfer’s elbow) rarely repairs or resolves without intervention of some description. It’s worth mentioning at this point that even if you have never picked up a golf club or tennis racket, you can still suffer with golfer’s or tennis elbow! Some people decide to take anti-inflammatories, either prescribed by a doctor or themselves. Whilst for some this may work and the pain may disappear, the underlying cause of the pain will not have been treated. When seeing a physiotherapist or sports injury specialist, not only will the pain be treated but the true cause of the pain will be corrected, meaning the joint and surrounding joints and tissues will be stronger than before.

Standing with the knees slightly bent, jump up as high as possible and bring the knees inwards towards the chest while extending the arms straight out. Land with the knees slightly bent and quickly jump again. The tuck jump is a great anaerobic explosive exercise which will work the quad muscles, glutes, calf muscles and soleus. Before I start off with the description for the bird of the month, just wanted to wish all the readers of this section of Club Life, a very Happy New Year! Thanks for all the encouragement the past year and for taking some time out to watch our feathered friends during a game of golf. The bird for the month is the House Sparrow. This common bird is seen all year around at the Golf Club. If you leave a small tub of water over summer at your home, you are very likely to have this bird, visit you as well. This small bird has a typical length of around 16 cm fully grown and the call it produces is a monotonous chirrup. This bird is one of the most widely distributed wild bird owing to its intended and accidental introduction to many regions of the world. The bird is very versatile and can co-exist with humans in both urban and rural habitations. The bird mostly feeds on seeds, grains of grass but it is an opportunistic eater and sometimes eats insects as seen in the picture among many other foods. Owing to the large number and the feeding habits resulting in destruction of crops, the bird is considered a common pest in many parts of the world. At Emirates Golf Club, the bird can be seen during day time on both the Faldo and Majilis courses all year around with more chances to see them just before the winter. They are seen sometimes taking refuge in the small shaded trees and they are also seen having a drink in the puddles of water along the course in the early mornings.

nder the patronage of HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters finished with Shanshan Feng strolling to a record 12-shot victory. HRH Princess Haya attended the prize giving ceremony to present the winner’s trophy.

OMEGA DUBAI LADIES MASTERS

“I am really delighted to win in Dubai, which is a lucky place for me,” said the 26-year-old Feng at the presentation ceremony. Feng sealed her third win and equalled her own record of 21 under par. “Coming to this tournament my goal was a top-five finish and I’m delighted to exceed my expectations. Dubai has been really good me, a lucky place, indeed,” said Feng who made three birdies in each half. Thailand’s Thidapa Suwannapura, who shot a final round 73, finished second on nine-under par with England’s Melissa Reid a stroke back in third while Pornanong Phatlum of Thailand, Germany’s Caroline Masson and French woman Jade Schaeffer finished tied for fourth place on seven-under par. Winning the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters was the icing on the cake for Shanshan Feng, who has also become the first player from China to win the Ladies European Tour’s Order of Merit. Feng teed up in Dubai with an unassailable lead and, after collecting a first prize cheque for €75,000, took her season’s earnings to €399,213.41, €150,062.84 ahead of second placed Reid. Denmark’s Emily Kristine Pedersen was presented with an OMEGA Speedmaster Chronograph watch after she was announced the winner of the Ladies European Tour’s 2015 Rookie of the Year Award. The 19-year-old from Smoerum capped an incredible first year on the Ladies European Tour with a tie for 17th place at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, which saw her end in sixth position on the LET Order of Merit, with season’s earnings of €171,688.41 from 14 tournaments.

Cuttings Our magnificent Majlis course before, during and after the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters

My Omega Dubai Ladies Masters Experience Last month brought along the opportunity to referee for the first time on a professional tour and I was excited by the opportunity having previously been a tournament manager back home for the Golf Union of Wales. However, despite some previous experience and qualifications gained in the rules of golf I can assure you there were nerves setting in each morning heading out to the course with the early groups. This month I would like to share with you some of the rulings and experiences I had during the 2015 ODLM.

DAY ONE As previously mentioned the nerves would be there each morning and I was eager to get the first ruling out of the way. It was a quiet first morning with my main focus on pace of play until I was called to go to the 13th fairway; Scottish professional Vicki Laing was there who had picked up her ball in the middle of the fairway. She knew the ruling but wanted me to confirm that it was a one shot penalty and that the ball HAD to be replaced under rule 18-2. Vicki claimed that she had been playing preferred lies back home over the past few months, hence the bad habit which was a costly mistake as she went on to miss the cut by one stroke...OUCH!!

DAY TWO Probably the most popular ruling of the week was for relief from immovable obstructions, mainly sprinkler heads close to putting greens, and water pipes in the sand areas. On both occasions under rule 24-2 players are entitled to free relief for interference to the ball, stance or swing by finding the nearest point of relief and then dropping within one club length not nearer the hole. However, there was one occasion where a player was denied relief.

of Golf Course Maintenance Mr. Craig Haldane ensued and, after he stopped laughing, he agreed to come out to help. With the assistance of a few others I was lifted out of the sand and I was soon back on the move. I was simply metres from the grass and this is a clear indication to members as to why we enforce the rules that carts should NOT be driven in the sand areas!!!

DAY FOUR

French Solheim Cup player Gwladys Nocera faced a tricky downhill chip on the third green; in between her ball and the hole was a sprinkler head and she was asking for relief as it was on her line of play. Much to her dissatisfaction the answer on this occasion was NO. Rule 24-2 does not allow for relief as intervention on the line of play is not itself interference under this rule, so basically she had to chip over it. I walked away and looked on as she chunked her chip to about six feet but thankfully she holed the putt for par.

DAY THREE This was probably the quietest day in terms of rulings but it was a lesson learned in terms of where to drive your golf cart. Obviously with the staging of the tournament, officials were asked to drive their carts outside the ropes as much as possible. Much to my own embarrassment I happened to be the first person that week to get a cart stuck in the sand!! I was driving along the right hand side of the 13th fairway and as I drove up a slight elevation I could feel the back wheel starting to spin as I gradually slowed down to a halt. A quick call to Director

With some relief now setting in that I had almost made it to the end of the tournament without any controversy. I was positioned on holes 3 - 7 for the final morning. Having seen the early players through the 7th it was now a case of seeing the leading groups through and then it was done. All was going smoothly, no rulings to be made, pace of play was very good so I decide to have a quiet five minutes to have lunch at the back of the 6th green. Literally, as I peeled open the first sandwich pack a shout out came from the 5th tee claiming that the ball of Nontaya Sriswanag appeared to be stuck up a tree on the left hand side of the fairway. As I drove down ahead of the players, there were two spectators who confirmed the location of the ball. As the player and caddie arrived in the area I began the stopwatch and the player now had five minutes to find or identify her ball. With the help of binoculars and a laser she was able to identify positively that one of the balls visible in the tree was definitely her ball. As the ball was not lost, she decided to declare the ball unplayable and take relief under rule 28c. As a ball may be substituted under this rule, she proceeded to drop another ball, under penalty of one stroke, within two club lengths of the point on the ground immediately below the place where the ball lay in the tree. If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply email your query to rjames@dubaigolf.com.

P

lease help us to maintain the quality of our golf courses by repairing all pitch marks and divots.

Repairing those little depressions is very important. Equally important is doing it the right way. While many golfers fail to repair ball marks there are also many well-meaning golfers who do “repair” the pitch marks, only to do so incorrectly.

Filling Divots

A ball mark can cause the grass in the depression to die, leaving not just a scar but also a pit in the putting surface that can knock well-struck putts offline. Repairing a ball mark restores a smooth surface and helps keep the grass healthy. So, let us all start fixing our ball marks, and doing it the right way. If you have a moment – if there isn’t another group of golfers behind you waiting for you to clear the green – fix one or two other ball marks, too, if you find more of them on the green.
