Pink Charity Day
W
hat a busy month of October we had with some of the season’s ‘major’ events, namely, the Al Dobowi Mixed Amateur Open, the ladies’ and the gent’s Seniors Championship, the ladies’ Pink Day when funds were raised for breast cancer charity ‘Brest Friends’, as well as the Monthly Medals and fun competitions. All results are included in this issue - it seems that some members have hit a purple patch and they seem to be featuring in many of the prize presentations, namely Swati Singh, Naima Maya, Anand Lakhiani, David Waite and Rajinder Razda -congratulations!
Emirates Golf Club Senior Management
T
his is to wish you all Season’s Greetings and a great golfing season ahead. The month of October has been very busy for the golf calendar with every weekend scheduled with a Club tournament.

Chief Executive Officer cmay@dubaigolf.com
Emirates Golf Club ladies’ section raised a remarkable AED 58,280 for ‘Brest Friends’ charity which was a great effort by the members who donated prizes and/or bought raffle tickets leading up to the Pink Golf Day. Well done to Lady Captain Maura and Vice-Captain Najla for the enormous amount of work they put in to make this event such a success. Thankfully, we have now got to the best time of the year weather-wise perfect temperatures during the day and that little ‘coolness’ in the air early morning and late evening. Where else in the world could it be better? Not only do we have the great weather, but we also have many events coming up - the DP World Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates 17th-20th November which features the top 60 finishers in the European Tour at this season-ending event. For the third consecutive year, DP World, host venue Jumeirah Golf Estates and the European Tour will be supporting ‘Shanab’, a men’s health initiative by Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP) to raise awareness of male cancers at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai. To run the campaign FOCP will be given a ‘majlis’ in the Championship Village, where doctors will conduct surveys and awareness sessions to educate visitors on men’s health issues related to testicular and prostate cancers. In December we will have the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters at Emirates Golf Club which is also a popular event and its always great to see the ladies from the European Tour playing our Championship course. Craig Haldane and the GCM team (Golf Course Maintenance) have been exceptionally busy the last two weeks with overseeding of the Majlis course. The team has been working really hard, day and night - no easy task for them at all. There are a number of videos posted on FaceBook outlining the work they have been doing - take a look as it is very interesting. As we head towards the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters next month and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic early February, the Majlis course will be a walking course only. Make use of the many caddies available who all work in various departments within the Club who are willing to work as caddies on their day off. Please book in advance through Ummer or Jega as the caddies are in great demand during our winter period. Enjoy the experience - it’s certainly the best way to play golf with our excellent caddies. Enjoy our courses, the wonderful weather, everything the Club has to offer, social events, the golf and also the recreation and spa side of the Club..we are truly well looked after and spoiled so make the most of it!

My note would not be complete without thanking the Club Management and their teams who have been fully involved in making sure that Emirates Golf Club is the best golf club in Dubai. I must congratulate the F&B teams and acknowledge the improvement in F&B at the various functions before and after the golf. The quality of food and service has seen a significant improvement over the last month or two.
I also reiterate that the golf courses are our home courses and we need to ensure that bunkers are raked, divots filled in, pitch marks fixed and carts are not driven on sand so as to be able to enjoy our golfing experience to the optimum. Happy Golfing Vipen Sethi Club Captain 2016-2017

he Season Openers are over but they have certainly provided such wonderful memories to look back on...the Ladies’ Season Opener when the ladies all dressed in green and sang “Ole,Ole,Ole” on the first tee; a few days later when Vipen and I faced the assembled crowd and families, thankfully both drives finding the fairway. F&B excelled themselves with tasty snacks and beverages on course and a fabulous buffet and entertainment that evening in M’s restaurant. Thanks also to Barney and Rhys for their help and support in making it such an enjoyable day.

avid Formas scored a superb threeunder par net 69 to win the OMA Emirates Monthly Medal series at Emirates Golf Club, which features a unique end-of-season Porsche shoot-out. David’s score also saw him top B Division from Luiz Bertuol in a dramatic scorecard play-off which came down to a better back six holes in this October Medal event, staged in association with Porsche Centre Dubai and Ascot and Chapels. Andrew Fullerton finished third with a net 72. David Waite claimed victory in Division A scoring a twounder-par net 70 to edge out Rajinder Razdan in another scorecard play-off, this time decided by a better back nine holes. Joe Smith came third in A Division, scoring a very solid net 71. C Division was won by Jan Hooftman with a net score of 76.
The Junior Monthly Medal was won by Amber Waite scoring a net 81 to secure the prize, another member of the Waite family to make it into the prizes on the day! Each of the Monthly Medal events features a Porsche Centre Dubai nearest-the-pin competition and Anand Lakhiani became the sixth winner on the par 3 seventh hole. Congratulations Anand! He will be one of eight qualifiers and eight other invited golfers forming two teams led by celebrities who will contest the season-ending par-3 style Porsche Centre Dubai shootout on the 18th hole of the Majlis. 70 net 70 net 71 net 72 gross 69 net 69 net 72 net

The Hickory Challenge saw golfers roll back the years as they tried to hit the par 3 green from the tee using their choice of real hickory golf clubs. Only 10 golfers managed the feat, all of whom were entered into a prize draw for a AED 500 Club voucher sponsored by Dubai Islamic Bank which was won by David Formas.

The first fixture of the year’s Inter-Club competition was on 12th October at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. Despite taking all of the on-course prizes with Past Lady Captain Helen Srivastava taking straightest drive and Yana Jamieson winning nearest the pin, the team found the course very tough so we need a big performance at our next fixture at Abu Dhabi City Golf Club on 16th November to keep on track to qualify for the ICC Final. Thanks to all the ladies who volunteer to play in these events.

The event was very well contested with Achal Ghai, Rajesh Sethi, Sanjay Kao, and Anil Kumar finishing a close second with a net 58 claiming this prize after a card count-back. Third place went to the team of Maria Petre, Ringo Leung, Kish Bandopadhyay and Dalip Tripathi, also with a net 58. On-course competitions included longest drive on the 12th hole which was won by Mitsuko Emmerson and nearest the pin prizes on holes 4 and 15, which were won by Anand Kapoor and Kish Bandopadhyay respectively. Finally, Moshe Kohli and Noemy Bertuol guessed correctly how many tees were in the vase and they each won a FERO mobile phone, a MiDCOM brand that will soon be launched in the GCC.
Half kneeling torso rotation 1. Begin with one knee bent to 90 degrees, the other directly below your hip. 2. Extend your arms directly overhead holding a club. 3. Rotate to both sides 5 times and repeat 2-3 times.
Thank you to MiDCOM for their continued support of this fantastic event and many thanks to all who contributed to the day and made the MiDCOM Diwali Scramble such a successful and colourful event.
This exercise challenges your core and ability to separate upper and lower body, which is essential in the golf swing.
Side step with rotation 1. Begin holding the club in front with arms extended. 2. From here step back and across to your left hand side with your right foot while at the same time rotating your upper body to the left. 3. Repeat 5-10 times each side and repeat 2-3 times.
Standing pray stretch 1. Begin standing with feet shoulder width apart holding onto a club or buggy. 2. Hinge from the hips and feel like you are pushing your head between your arms. You should feel the stretch up your back and shoulder muscles. 3. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat 2-3 times. In the golf swing we need mobility in the muscles in our back to allow us to get our arms up in the back swing.

Ishu Rupani Hello to my golfing friends at EGC After 13 years of great living in Hong Kong I moved with my wife and three children to Dubai. This was in August 1992. I thought it would be better to move in the peak of the heat and get complaints from the family so that I could tell them that, from that period onwards the weather would only get better.
Now, at the beginning of November, overseeding is taking place on the Majlis. Photos below show the preparation and start of this process. To get a better understanding of what we do when overseeding we have posted a series of videos on FaceBook - it’s the best form of communication we have used in 10 years! The rest will follow over the coming days and weeks.
Being an avid squash player I spent a lot of time at the Trade Centre Apartments Club squash courts until the following year, in 1993, when one of my friends, Dilip Awtani, suggested that I play golf and he even even booked the first lesson for me at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. That was the start of my wonderful journey of playing golf. In 1994 I became a member of Emirates Golf Club. I recollect Mike Gerbich was the Captain of the Club and how welcoming he was - always there to help and always smiling. He passed away in July this year. RIP Mike.
VISIT TO PRETORIA I was recently back in Pretoria at Silver Lakes GC and the African Golf Academy to deliver education to new up and coming greenkeepers. Derek Daly and Andrew Mckenna, through Elmwood College, have a great set up here and with the support of Jacobsen they have really grown this programme. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing some best practices with this engaged group. Thank you for having me.
They say golf is like life but don’t believe that. Golf is more complicated!! Just think of the number of mood swings you go through in just one round!! From a starting handicap of 28 I am now 10.6 after playing this game for 22 years and being a member of the fabulous Emirates Golf Club. I would play every day if I could. It’s cheaper than going to a shrink and has probably kept more people sane.
In 2010 I achieved my golf bucket list. 1. I played at the Old Course on my first trip to Scotland which was sponsored by Chivas. 2. In the same year on 2nd December, UAE National Day, I had my only holein-one on the Majlis hole number 4. 3.Last year for the first time I also managed to get to single digits with a handicap of 7.9! I have also been on many overseas golf trips with my friends. One of the trips to Antalya which was arranged by Emirates Golf Club in April 2015 was simply wonderful. I hope the Club will think of arranging more of such golf trips. Recently we were in Bulgaria - see photos. Emirates Golf Club is like my second home. I thank the management for making me a member of the Consultative Committee for two years. I would also like to thank all colleagues of the Club, as well as the Golf Operations team, F&B, Locker Room and Fit Lab. They are always smiling and helpful. Thank you to Jacqui for her continued efforts to publish Club Life. I look forward to another exciting year at EGC and I wish Captains Vipen Sethi and Maura Duggan and Vice-Captains Ivan Fornazaric and Najla Bartette all the very best for the season ahead.

ongratulations to Rajinder Razdan and Swati Singh for triumphing in the Al Dobowi Mixed Amateur Open. Naema Maya and Veneet Mohan were crowned our Seniors Championship winners this month with scores of 79 and 75 respectively, excellent play from our ‘experienced’ members.
A massive thank you and congratulations to all members for your support, donations and contribution to the ladies’ Pink Ball golf competition on Monday 24th October. Our Lady Captain, Maura Duggan, along with Najla and great support from the ladies section raised over AED 55,000 for breast cancer research through the Al Jalila Foundation. Our season opening events and the Midcom Diwali Scramble were also excellently supported so thank you for your support of such popular mixed events. Update on events this month: • Midnight Madness has been moved from 10th November to 9th February 2017. • The Legacy Prime Pro Am Cup Series is going from strength to strength; thank you to sponsors Achal Ghai and Jugwinder Brar along with Stephen Deane for making these events a great success. Over 40 teams entered for the October edition and with only 23 Pros playing, members were of course left disappointed. The aim of the series is to encourage as many different members as possible to play, so if you missed out on the first two events you will be sure to receive a space in the next fixture on 18th November 2016, 8.00am shotgun start on the Majlis. • Other highlights of the month are the Heritage Trophy for the ladies (21st and 28th November) and the Clubhouse Trophy (25th November) for the men.
New Carts The new EZGO cart fleet has arrived and the final assembly of the 170 carts is almost complete. Each cart will be fitted with a new GPS system, custom made for EZGO golf carts. We anticipate the new cart fleet will be in operation by 11th November. The TKVGPS system includes the below features: • Enhanced hole-views & green-views • On-screen pro tips • Digital scorecard • Yardage to pin • Distances to marked hazards • Interactive touch-screen distances to golfer selected points • 3D hole flyovers • Food & beverage menus and ordering • Cart usage reports • Pace of play reports • Cart tracking reports and cart control technology
You may recall that back in September 2015 we launched ‘Cart Kill’ technology linked to the current GPS System. For various reasons this wasn’t as successful as planned and it was removed. However the new system is designed to prevent members and guests alike from driving the golf carts into prohibited areas. From now on please drive the carts on the paths and fairways when possible. Please keep clear of the tee boxes, green surrounds, lakes and ALL SAND AREAS. For example, if you attempt to drive in a SAND AREA your cart will stop slowly and you must reverse the cart out of the restricted area before you can drive forward once more. During the launch of this function please forward any feedback to starters, marshals and management. The clubs policy is to keep carts out of all sand areas to: • avoid disturbance to the natural habitat • avoid damage to the golf cart including getting them stuck and turning over • avoid tire tracks from disrupting the game of fellow members playing behind • maintain the aesthetic qualities of the course • prevent sand blowing up into the cart resulting in maintenance issues
Majlis Caddies Please be informed the Majlis course will be WALKING ONLY from 4th November 2016 – 14th February 2017. The majority of caddies at Emirates Golf Club are members of the operations team (including Golf Operations, Golf Course Maintenance and Food/Beverage). The demands of the operation dictate that their day job comes first therefore it is not possible for us to always organise and guarantee caddies. The Caddie Master is our golf operations supervisor Ummer. Requests for caddies can be made on the following numbers at the said times, however please note we cannot always guarantee a caddie for your game but we will try our best to meet the demand. At least 24 hours notice is also required. Ummer 0506768148 (please call Thursday– Monday, 8.00am-6.00pm) Jega 0505786800 (please call Tuesday & Wednesday 8.00am-4.00pm) Minimum Caddie Fees: Members and Members’ Guests – AED 120 Visitors – AED 150, (additional gratuity at the discretion of the player) Happy Golfing! For those of you who have been here a similar amount of time to me, which is 15 years or so (I came to Dubai when I was 10), you will see the vast improvement we have made at Fit Lab. I like to think we have stayed ahead of our competitors and that we offer the full health and wellness package. I am very proud to say that, without a fantastic team behind me, this would not have been possible. So thank you not only to my Fit Lab colleagues but to all of Dubai Golf and to all our members for your support and a special thanks for your feedback on how to continue to strive to be the best. As always, Fit Lab is trying innovative ideas on how we can improve the experience at Fit Lab and offer more value to our members. We have recently introduced Karate and Martial Arts which has been a huge success and adults and children are most welcome.
PiYO If you havent tried PiYO then why not get to a class in November, first class is FREE. So what is PIYO? It is NOT a pilates NOR a yoga class, it’s a strengthening and toning class using pilates and yoga moves to provide a full body conditioning low impact class. It strenghtens, tones and increases flexibility all in the one class. The class is going into its second year at Emirates Golf Club and is now proving to be popular with many regulars becoming addicted to the fantastic workout. Come along to the class with your yoga mat, lots of water and be prepared for a fantastic low impact

exercise tips Rowing is an excellent form of exercise utilising all the major muscles in the body. It can be used for long duration efforts such as 5km for time, or 30 minutes for distance. Interval training is highly popular and effective also, with high intensity sprints to increase the heart rate, combined with rest intervals, for example, 10 sets of 300m as fast as possible, with one minute rest. You can also combine the rower into circuit style workouts alongside weights and bodyweight exercises. Key points in technique - reach forward as far as you can - push with the legs until straight and then pull with the arms maintaining an upright torso and tight core - pull the handle into the body just below the chest and return the handle in a smooth rhythmic motion
Fit Lab
Fit Lab
or those of you who have been to Fit Lab over the past month you will have seen that the place is booming which is fantastic. It’s great to see so many fitness enthusiasts getting into their exercise routines.
INSANITY CLASS Insanity and METAFIT are two fantastic programmes which are HIIT WORKOUTS. So what is HIIT? HIIT stands for high intensity interval training. This means you work at a high intensity for a short interval and then rest. These workouts are known for not just burning calories at the time but are renowned for the after burn. This means it increases your metabolism so that you are burning calories 24 hours later from your HIIT workout. It’s important to vary your exercise regime with all types of training. These workouts are for ALL levels; modifications are on offer for all moves. So why not give it a try in November! First class is free!

his month we will look at when a golfer can and cannot play a provisional ball. We don’t see provisional balls played enough in amateur golf which is a shame as the rule is actually there to save time and ultimately improve pace of play and even more so now that the Majlis course will now become walking only. You should play a provisional ball any time when your ball may be out of bounds or lost in any area outside of a water hazard. Any time that you don’t find your ball or if you find it lying out of bounds then you are faced with the longest walk in golf back to where you last played, to play again under a one stroke penalty. But if, after you hit that wild shot, you take the opportunity to play a provisional ball, you could then continue play with your original ball if you find it in-bounds within the permitted five minutes, with no penalty. However, if you didn’t find it, or if you found it out of bounds, you’d simply continue play with the provisional ball. You will have saved yourself, and the golfers behind you, the time it would have taken for you to walk back and hit another ball as well as the time to walk ahead again to re-join your group. Please be reminded that firstly, you MUST “announce” your intention to play a provisional ball, and secondly, you MUST play the provisional before you go forward and begin searching for the first ball. Your “announcement” should be specific in that you should use the word ‘provisional’ or make it abundantly clear that you intend to proceed under the applicable rule, (Rule 27-2a). To keep it simple, please refer to the diagram below which explains when you can or cannot play a provisional ball. If you have any queries then please don’t hesitate to ask next time you see me at the Club.

Handicap Update Dear Member, The current policy across both Emirates Golf Club and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club which came into effect on 6th February 2012, is that all golfers playing off handicaps of 2.4 or below will have scores recorded on tournament games only and exclude general play rounds. Please be advised that from Friday 14th October the policy will be amended as follows: • All juniors (under 18 years old) who have a handicap of 2.4 or below will continue to be monitored by the existing policy. Their handicap will be calculated on tournament rounds only. • All other golfers will have their handicap based on all games (tournament and general play) therefore all golfers over 18 years old, including those with handicaps below 2.4, must enter the scores of all games played. The handicap system is designed to take into account all games and hence reflects a more accurate handicap for the individual member. All members who currently have their handicap based only on tournament rounds will be contacted via email by the Golf Operations team. For more information, please contact Rhys James at Emirates Golf Club on rjames@dubaigolf. com or Rashid Hamood at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club on rhamood@dubaigolf.com.

October 8th Great to have the Emirati Junior Team at The Academy last month with Golf Professional Richard Dunsby!

Members Tom and Ingrid Lind represented Emirates Golf Club in the 2016 World Hickory Open Finals in Carnoustie (Panmure Golf Club) last month, having qualified through the Barclays Hickory Final over the Faldo course.
Reflections from the Carnoustie Suite Overlooking the tee box of the first hole of the Carnoustie Golf Club from our balcony and enjoying a traditional Scottish ‘tea and scones’, we are recuperating from a spectacular golf extravaganza. It all began when, much to our surprise, Ingrid and I won the Barclays Hickory Challenge with the grandad style hickory clubs at Emirates Golf Club and, amazingly, we were to represent the Club at the World Hickory Championships to be played at the ancient course of Panmure Golf Club – Carnoustie (yes the same Club where Ben Hogan prepared for the 1953 Open). So what were we supposed to do? Knowing that tradition is very much in the minds of the Brits, Ingrid firstly started to assemble an acceptable attire: a pair of my suit trousers was transformed into true plus-fours using the google search “howto-make-knickerbocker-pants” and on our way to Scotland we dived into granny and granddad’s cupboards to complement this with long skirts and flat caps:we certainly looked the part. Now imagine entering a time machine: at 4.30pm on the Sunday there was a predrinks get-together and, following that was three and a half days of “Peaky Blinders
meets Downton Abbey on the golf course” binge -watching episodes already started and later episodes in which we were starring as well. A gentlemen by the name of Lionel Freeman was the grand old man of the fraternity/sorority of hickory players and the programme was pure aristocratic indulgence of playing serious golf on a pretty tough links-course, including a professional starter (… and next on the tee, representing Emirates Golf Club …. Ingrid Lind) rounded off with a Hickory Champions’ Gala dinner with fun speeches and lots of interacting with the participants who came from all over the world: UK, USA, South Africa, Japan, China, Scandinavia, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and of course the Arab-Dutch delegation that we represented. At breakfast all participants were ready dressed; they discussed where they sourced their ancient equipment and who the best carpenters were in the land who were able to restore their precious clubs. The second and third days consisted of the actual tournament which included not only an array of professionals, but also amateurs like us, and we were playing for the

ultimate honour of being named Hickory World Champions. Your reporter was not so skilled, but after two days we are feeling so proud to have been allowed to take part in this extraordinary event. Sandie Lyle, the former US Masters and the Open Champion was crowned Men’s champion, an honour that he put at equal ranking of his Majors . On the ladies’ side after two trying rounds Ingrid Lind (yes your Emirates Golf Club representative) was crowned ladies’ stableford World Hickory Champion achieving 54 points over 36 holes (just to show how tough the circumstances were) Hereby, we want to thank Emirates Golf Club (Barney and Rhys) and sponsors Barclays for getting us enthused for this picturesque part of our golf game and we also thank Lionel Freeman and his organisation for hosting the event. Ingrid looks forward to defending her title next year and we wholeheartedly hope that more of our Club members will catch the ‘Hickory-virus’. Tom Lind
