e had a great November, with some fun, especially at the Diwali Scramble. I was particularly touched by the efforts made by Naima, Najla and past Lady Captain Martha, who looked glorious in Indian saris. They went out a few days earlier and had themselves fitted. It is gestures such as these which are truly heart warming. I have always maintained that it is not golf courses, but its members that make golf clubs. A big thank you to Jayshree and Anvita for all their efforts to provide the special touches to the occasion, and to all the members and spouses who joined us on the day at golf and at the after-party.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling – I said I wanted to win both trophies this week and that is exactly what I’ve managed to do even though I didn’t get off to the best of starts with a bogey on the first,” said McIlroy at the prize-presentation. “I saw that Justin was making a charge and knew I needed to do something special over the closing few holes - I really couldn’t have wished for a better ending.”

Salems Snatch International Pairs UAE Victory at Emirates Golf Club
an you believe it’s December? The Al Dobowi Mixed Amateur Open was a huge success as always and produced some fantastic scores on both the Faldo and the Majlis. It was great to see our own Amarjeet Radia and Rohit Gupta win the trophy with many other Emirates members collecting prizes too. Congratulations to everyone! Our Ladies’ section has as usual been extremely busy. The November Medal was battled out on the Majlis, with the conditions beginning to take shape for the Ladies’ Masters. This didn’t seem to deter our ladies with Janet Curtis winning with a staggering net 61! Viv Caley clinched the best gross and best net with her round of 82, well done Viv. Both Janet and Viv earned maximum golfer of the year points in the net and gross categories, a very productive medal day for them both! November also brought a new date to our diary with the Diwali scramble, a mixed event very expertly organised and introduced by Club Captain, Moshe Kohli. There was an immense amount of fun had by all on the course, helped along by Moshe’s extreme generosity, as usual. Some had more ‘fun than others, but Moshe’s team was able to stay focused and lift the trophy high at the end of the day!! The evening meal and entertainment were enjoyed by all, and I’m sure everyone would like to join me in thanking Moshe for a great event! Monday the 12th saw a Pairs Betterball contest on the Faldo for the Ladies which is such a forgiving format, allowing both players, at times, the opportunity to really go for those risky shots, very much a risk and reward situation. This worked better for some more than others and it was fantastic to see one of my beginners from last year, Elaine Belcher, triumphing with her extremely able partner Sandie Broedelet. Congratulations! The Heritage Trophy followed, with two rounds on consecutive Mondays. The first round on the Faldo produced some amazing stableford scores with both Sandie and Elaine’s names
appearing again at the top of the leader board along with Najla Bartette and Vice-Captain, Barbara Head. It was a beautiful, cool Monday morning for our second round on the Majlis, conditions becoming a little trickier, with the rough gaining strength for the Ladies Masters! However, this was not a problem for our ladies, grasping the added benefit of the superb greens, Sandie Broedelet continued her winning streak, with a truly outstanding 79 points! Congratulations to everyone who took part, and particularly those who managed both rounds. We are now selling raffle tickets for our Christmas Scramble, with all proceeds going to our Junior Staff, who certainly work hard all year, our way of thanking them and making their Festive season a little more enjoyable, so please, make sure you all purchase many tickets and contribute. We are of course asking for donations and raffle prizes from all members. The draw will take place at the Mixed Christmas Scramble dinner, on 21st December. Look forward to seeing you all there. Our Ladies’ Christmas Scramble will take place on December 10th, with lots of fun out on the course, fancy dress optional, but preferred. Even if you don’t regularly play on a Monday, I would love to invite all lady golfing members to join in with the festive spirit, it really is a fun day! This is followed on Wednesday 12th, with our Christmas lunch; sign up sheets are in the locker room. Come along, meet some new people and get yourselves in the festive mood! As a follow up to our Pink Charity Golf day, the total amount raised for Breast Cancer Arabia, was a phenomenal 62,000 ! Such a huge effort by everyone involved, thank you! Don’t forget the Omega Dubai Ladies’ Masters, 2nd-8th December. I hope to see you all out there following the action, in what will be a fantastic event as always. A very Merry and Happy Festive Season to all,

lan and Soumaya Salem finally realised their Tech Access International Pairs UAE, presented by Cadillac dream,as they won a Qualifier at their fifth attempt. The highly fancied pairing, who are members at The Address Montgomerie Dubai and Emirates Golf Club, had played in Qualifiers at both clubs in the first two Tech Access International Pairs UAE series but it proved to be fifth time lucky as they sealed their spot in the 2013 National Final at Yas Links when they won the Emirates Golf Club event on Saturday. With 46 pairs on the Majlis Course and in perfect playing conditions, competition was always going to be fierce and tension mounted in the runup to the prizegiving as news filtered down that three pairs had finished the day with 41 stableford points and a countback would be required to determine the winners. Paul Byrne and Maura Duggan, were the first casualties of the countback as their back-9 couldn’t match the Salems’ and then their last-6 holes were bettered by Mike Tracey and Stephen Jones who claimed the runners-up prize. Nearest-the-pin prizes went to Gokul Mani and Rory McDonald on holes 4

ith the weather cooling and the Junior programme in full swing it was time for the first Emirates Academy Junior event of the new season. The tournament took place on Thursday October 25th on the par 3 with a great turn out of over 70 competitors. The double shotgun event had kids from age 6-16 showing their skills and, as always, the standard was good with many pars and some impressive scoring. The 3pm shotgun was contested over 3 holes with the White and Yellow Level
players within the Academy lesson programme. Mahummad Shahdad, took first place with a great score of 13 closely followed by Karam Chharba in second.
in Black Level, James Weng pipped Gary Lui with consistent scoring of 2 and 4 over par for both players.
Levels Blue, Purple and Black set off at 4:30 for 6 holes from the red tees. Tanishq Lalvani secured first with a score of 26 and in second was Ben Clarke with 27 in Blue Level. In Purple Level the standard was fantastic and with a great score of 24 Hugo Garcia could still only grab second place as young Englishman Mark Baxter had an amazing 3 over par 21 for the 6 holes. Fighting it out for the top level prize
A special prize was given to Takumi Miyawaki for best overall performer throughout the season last year so congratulations on this award and keep up the good practice and play. Thanks again to all the kids and parents for your continued support of The Academy at Emirates Golf Club.

avita Sehmi will need to calm her adrenaline rushes down when she makes her first appearance in the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters to be held under the patronage of HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, at the Emirates Golf Club from December 5 to 8. For the 17-year-old Emirates Golf Club prodigy, who will be competing in the season-ending Ladies European Tour event on a sponsor’s invitation, it may sound like a quixotic challenge, but she is confident of being competitive when she joins the likes of defending champion Lexi Thompson, seasoned Laura Davies and charismatic Michelle Wie in a starstudded field.

trophy seekers. As we had never been expats either, the question of EGC membership was agreed during my job interviews and we are very pleased that it was. The game is a great hobby if not taken too seriously and it can be played together or separately (wonderful for that time when the kids are off your hands). We have played on holidays and business in all six continents.
“I am grateful to golf in DUBAi for inviting me to play at this highest-level of golf. I know opportunities like this one don’t come knocking your door too often. I will try and give my best shot and see what happens,” said Kavita, who started playing golf when she was just six years old.
would come in handy,” said Kavita, who averages about 260 yards off the tee. “I don’t think making the cut is a distant dream, but it will all depend on how I fare with my putter,” said Kavita whose best round at her home course being a threeunder 69.
“I am not thinking far ahead, but my immediate goal is to try and make the cut and that in itself will constitute an achievement,” said Kavita, a two-time winner of the Junior Club Championship at Emirates Golf Club.
“Whatever the outcome, it will be fun to play and meet players like Lexi, one of my good friends with whom I interact frequently on Facebook. I can’t wait to get started,” said Kavita, who finished second on the 2011-2012 Ladies Amateur Order of Merit in the UAE.
“I have not been playing competitive golf these because of my school exams, but have been taking lessons from Stephen Deane (head pro at EGC) to fine tune my skills ahead of the tournament,” said Kavita, a grade 11th student at JESS in Arabian Ranches.
Mohamed Juma Buamaim, vice chairman and CEO of golf in DUBAi, believes such invitations to local talent will spur them to take the sport seriously and work harder on their game. “We try and rotate invitations each year so that everyone who has achieved a certain level of standard gets first-hand experience of what it takes to compete at this level of golf.
“I have played this (Majlis) course many times and know what it takes to shoot low. Hopefully, my long game
“I wish Kavita the very best and hope her presence in the elite field will motivate other emerging players to aim for greater things in life.”
Career Path Roger: I originally trained and qualified as a chartered accountant and after a period working as an accountant in the tobacco industry (Carreras Rothmans) I joined Overseas Containers Limited (later P&O Containers in 1967 at the start of what became known as the “Container Revolution” The transport industry was to be part of life for the rest of my career. Whist initially in P&O Containers my roles were financial, in 1978 I was promoted to be the Director responsible for the Far East Trade and the Pacific Basin. As the cargo moved between Europe and the Far East with many offices in various countries, a great deal of travel was involved. In 1985 I was made a Managing Director and the United States and Canada were added to my responsibilities. For nearly four years I spent one week per month in New York in addition to other travel. By 1991 we had built a worldwide business from the sailing of the first ship in 1969. I left in 1991 after 23 years of change and growth a lot of hard work and fun in my life. Brenda: After a brief secretarial career I chose to marry Roger and faced a life of hard work raising the family (two sons…and Roger!) so my time was spent running the home, managing on my own a lot while Roger was travelling but we managed and, as you see we are still seen at the club together so we survived! Our two sons live in England. Mark lived and worked in the USA for eighteen years, and now lives with his partner Shelley in Birmingham. He works for the container shipping company Maersk Line. Howard is married to Shama and they have two very young daughters. They live in North London not far from our home in Hertfordshire, and Howard works for Coutts Bank. What brought you to Dubai? Roger: In 1991 the Dubai Government had two ports run as separate businesses which were managed by foreign companies. They took the decision to merge the two and run them as a single business thus Dubai Ports Authority was born. I was invited to join the new business in a financial role

Roger: The Club has changed a lot over the years and in the early days it was spectacular with the blue water lakes, the carp rising to the surface with the flamingos at the lake on the 14th along with a large variety of beautiful bird life. Maybe it was not practical to maintain this but the changes are not for the better. The Majlis is a very good course and still rates well compared with the many which have been added in the UAE over the years. Golfers of different standards will have different views on the same course but for us we do not enjoy playing the Faldo. We have met a lot of people and made many friends at the Club over the years; some have moved on and some remain. Your dream four-ball? Rogee: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. John Lincoln: “Most people start up their business and projects based on opportunistic decisions as opposed to a strategic decision, they don’t think about sustainability and growth, and because of that we see many business’s fail. This analysis got me thinking and led me to decide that I want to share my expertise and knowledge.” ‘Connect the Dots’ by John Lincoln is now available at all major bookstores in Dubai.

The Zurich Invitational was a hugely successful event which involved a demonstration clinic by the Zurich Ambassadors, followed by 18-holes on the prestigious Majlis course where Zurich’s guests were given the opportunity to play with Luke and Justin. This was rounded up by a three hole charity shootout, with Luke and Justin going head-to-head to raise money for their individuals charities in America. The Zurich Invitational was won by James Cross, David Austin, Matthew Alabaster and Simon Brind. Maroun Mourad, CEO of Zurich’s General Insurance business in the Middle East, commented: “Zurich’s established association with golf worldwide is strengthened by our strategic sponsorship of Emirates Golf Club here in the UAE. We are extremely fortunate to have our Zurich Ambassadors, two of the world’s best players, here in Dubai to host our first Zurich Invitational. ell we arrived back in Australia in March having decided to settle in Sydney and not Queensland as we originally thought as the rest of our families are here. Whilst waiting for the container to arrive we stayed in the centre of the city and enjoyed the tail end of summer with true blue skies and clean air to breath…and RAIN!! We were blessed with the company of Mr Micky Briggs with his lovely lady when they were in Sydney to visit his daughter and we were very tempted to return to Dubai with him. We don’t miss Dubai itself, but we do terribly miss the friends we made there, the golfers, non-golfers, the staff at the club, the Majlis and yes, believe it or not, the Faldo. Cameron Bellman keeps threatening us with a visit and we have already had visitors from Dubai so we’ve been able to catch up on some of the gossip. A friend from Zurich stayed with us a few days ago and was asking when we are returning, this makes it very hard to settle down as we were in Dubai for nearly eleven years and miss the proximity to Europe. We are grounded at the moment due to Paul’s operation and I am about to have my eyesight fixed so we will not be able to travel until at least end of January. We are going to Jersey in June to see our son and his family but will head over to Europe before then to look at some property maybe. Paul needed to have a total left knee replacement once we got back which was done in late May and he is still in the process of recovering with daily gym, cycling & swimming. We have only played eight games of golf since arriving back and have just decided to join Roseville Golf Club, which is a difficult and very hilly course located approximately 20 minutes north from where we live. We have walked the course twice and Paul’s knee is better than ever.
We live in a suburb called Pyrmont which is about a 15 minute walk to the city with the apartment overlooking Sydney harbour and the bridge and it’s just a 5 minute walk to the Casino. New Year’s Eve will be spectacular as we have the best fireworks display in the world. This is a great opportunity to thank again all those who gave us a very moving farewell and we hope to see you all when we pass through Dubai next year. The gift we received sits proudly on show in the living room, thank you again Jacqui for organising this on behalf of the Saturday crowd. To all those to whom we did not physically say goodbye it was just too emotional in the end, but we still think of you and miss you all, even the Saturday afternoon rogues. Love and Best wishes to all

Dear Member,
I
’m sure you will have seen Fit Lab booming over the past months and it’s great to see lots of you taking advantage of the fantastic activities on offer there. The TRX and Zumba classes seem to be the popular choice amongst the members and if you haven’t tried these please do so as you will find they really do help get results. I wouldn’t probably recommend Zumba for the gents (ha ha) but the TRX is a brilliant full body workout to help improve the following – posture, flexibility, strength and cardio fitness. Due to demand, from December 1st we are putting more TRX classes on and please check the website www.dubaigolf.com or the time table of classes below!

Peel the red bell pepper and cut it into cubes. Boil the green beans in salted water. Finely slice the pink radishes. Shell the small fava beans and remove the shoots. Wash the small basil leaves and romaine lettuce. Peel the scallions and slice them finely. Rub the inside of a salad bowl with half garlic clove. ollowing the Omega Dubai Ladies’ Masters, the work will not in GCM and we began to prep areas directly behind the last group ready for the overseed over the four days that follow the end of the tournament. This procedure usually happens in the first week of November, but this year we decided to try our timing differently and establish the seed in a less competitive environment. This coupled with the new irrigation system will allow us to get the seed up quickly and work towards establishing it for the Dubai Desert Classic in late January. Overseeding with Rye grass will allow us to present the course very well for the cooler months ahead giving us good definition and a healthy stand of rough for the season. We have had an incredibly busy November as you will see in the slow recovery of divots on fairways. With the seed down, we are able to recover a lot quicker from divot damage which is a great advantage. Typically, the Rye would be a good three months old prior to the tournament. This year it will barely be seven weeks so we will need to push things in terms of fertility but we also need to be vigilant in managing traffic around the course. Even though predominantly walking, we will ask those using trolleys to please help us by strictly obeying the ‘stay away’ areas clearly defined with the green and white stakes. It really helps us around greens complexes in particular, if you stay far away. Believe it or not, the wheels from the trolleys do a lot of damage in these areas.

I hear a lot of comments re the condition of the course and how at this time of year it is better than usual. Irrespective of tournaments, our practices at this time of year remain the same. This is particularly true outside of greens. The overseed allows great presentation whether there is a tournament or not. On greens of course, we push the boundaries as the tour players’ expectations are such that they demand very firm greens, so yes, we do a few
