2019-2020
SEASON Yana Jamieson Lady Captain
Naema Maya
Lady Vice-Captain
Ishu Rupani Club Captain
Boyd Edmondson Vice-Captain
I hope you all had a good break during the summer months, whether in Dubai or elsewhere in the world. The new season 2109-2020 officially started on 1st September when our two Captains. Ishu and Yana, took over the reins…and those precious car parking spaces. Wishing you both an enjoyable and successful tenure as we all look forward to a fun season with you and your Vice-Captains, Boyd and Naema.
EMIRATES GOLF CLUB2 SENIOR MANAGEMENT
Many thanks to outgoing Captains Paul Byrne and Sulafa Hamdan who had a superb season which was enjoyed by all. I’m sure you are enjoying the break now that you have ‘retired’! What a fantastic summer of sport we had with several major events which were incredibly exciting, right down to the last moments, namely, Wimbledon Final, the British Grand Prix and the Cricket World Cup. All of these events took place on the same day so it was a superb and memorable day of sport. At Wimbledon, which was nail-biting, after 4 hours and 57 minutes, top seeded Djokovic defeated second seed Federer in five sets to win the match, which was the longest final the tournament has ever seen. At Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton took a record sixth British Grand Prix win and at Lord’s the England team won an extraordinary World Cup final against New Zealand in a most astonishing climax to the match, emerging as World Cup winners for the first time.

Matt Perry and his team at Golf Course Maintenance have been hard at work throughout the summer with improvements and changes to the course and practice areas. Thanks to all of you on doing a great job, especially during the height of the very hot summer. Congratulations to Rhys James who has been promoted to Director of Golf which is great news. However, his new position is at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club so good for him but not so good for us at Emirates Golf Club. Wishing you all the best Rhys.

At Royal Portrush a couple of weeks later, Irishman Shane Lowry won the 148th Open Championship winning by six-shots over runner-up Tommy Fleetwood. The win is the first major championship for the 32-year-old, who burst onto the professional scene a decade ago with a win at the 2009 Irish Open as a 22-year-old amateur. Now, to the season ahead and our calendar, complete with our own Majors, which is extremely busy; our tournament calendar is now available at the reservations desk and online on the Member Zone. Please don’t forget to book online for the tournaments, especially for the Mixed Season Opener on Friday 4th October as entries to this will definitely fill up quickly. Our Captains will officially ‘drive’ into office at the start of the tournament.

• Extension of the Members’ Tee (far end of driving range) Following the closing of the Faldo range 12 months ago, we have increased the members’ teeing area for a second time to provide adequate space for practice.
The green has doubled in size, and the grass species has changed from Paspalum to Bermuda so that it is the same as the Majlis course. The playing area has increased in size so there are more places to chip from and we feel that this will work a lot better going forward. The members’ questionnaire highlighted short game practice as a weakness so thank you for the feedback on this point.
• Majlis 6th Green Extension
The front portion of the green has been increased in size as it had become a very narrow entrance to the green.

The summer is of course a good time for our Golf Course Maintenance team to carry out work on the facilities and you will have seen a number of changes and improvements to enhance your enjoyment of the golf course and practice areas. Our Golf Course Superintendent, Matthew Perry, has gone into detail about these changes in his article on the Member Zone and in this issue of Club Life but I have listed the major changes below:
• Chipping Green Re-Design
Enjoy your golf as well as the social events taking place at the Club.
Past Lady Captain, Sophie Longstreet, sadly passed away last month in Canada and our sincere condolences go to her husband Wayne and the family (see obituary in this issue).
Welcome to the start of the 2019/2020 season, I hope that many of you have had time away from the Dubai summer and that you caught up with family and friends across the globe. We welcome in our new Club Captains (from 1st September) with Ishu Rupani and Yana Jamieson taking over from Paul and Sulafa. On behalf of all colleagues and members, we wish Ishu and Yana an enjoyable and exciting year ahead! They will be well supported by Vice-Captains Boyd Edmondson and Naema Maya.

• Tee Extensions on the Majlis course
A number of tee boxes have been widened to help spread the wear during a busy season
• Majlis Hole 7 – New Bridge
The bridge transporting golfers to the 7th green and 14th tee was in need of replacing. This process is almost complete and will be operational by mid-September
Topgolf Construction officially only started in March 2019 due to unforeseen delays. These included changing the orientation of the building (guests will now drive past the par 3 course, park at the far end, and hit towards the Marina skyline) and the discovery of utility lines under the driving range footprint. Topgolf Dubai is currently scheduled for a May 2020 completion and aims to be operational in June.
Plastic Campaign From Quarter 4 of 2019, we will no longer give out plastic bottles of water at the cart staging area. Each member (and visiting guest) will receive a reusable flask; this will be similar to the National Geographic one you have, enabling us to reduce plastic consumption by approximately 220,000 bottles per year. The bottles are currently under production and more information will follow regarding this significant change in behaviour towards single use plastic.
Golf Operations Further to my update back in June regarding the promotion of Rhys James, he will unfortunately be leaving Emirates Golf Club and will be moving to Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club from 1st September. Rhys has developed superbly over his five years at Emirates Golf Club but he will be continuing his career and development at our sister club. I am sure that many of you will bump into Rhys as you play at Dubai Creek under our reciprocal membership benefit. Please also note the Tournament Calendar is now available on the website and by following this link https://www. bydubaigolf.com/MemberZone2/default. aspx Following feedback from the membership, we have made a subtle change to the walking season on the Majlis course. Traditionally the Majlis has been walking only from 1st November though to 7th February. This season the walking period will be from the 3rd -20th November and then again from 4th December to 5th February 2020. Members will benefit from approximately two extra weeks with golf carts as an option. However, I am sure you will agree that the Majlis, with greens so close to tee boxes, is a fantastic course to walk, so I hope that many of you will continue walking the fairways during this period! Please enjoy the season ahead and I look forward to catching up with you at the Club! Barney Coleman Club Manager

INTRODUCING CLUB CAPTAIN After 13 years of a wonderful time living in Hong Kong I moved with my wife and three children to Dubai in August 1992. In 1997 I went to Harvard Business School to attend a Business Executive Programme called OPM and graduated in 1999. After selling my trading business in 2003 I have since been running a consultancy service in Dubai Real Estate Market. When I first came to Dubai, being an avid squash player, I would spend much of my time at the Trade Centre Apartments Club until, a year later, in 1993 one of my friends, Dilip Awtani, suggested that I should take up golf - he even booked the first lesson for me at the Creek Golf & Yacht Club. That was the start of my wonderful journey of playing golf. In 1994 I became the member of Emirates Golf Club. I recollect Mike Gerbich was Captain of the Club and how welcoming he was. He was always there to help and always smiling. He passed away a few years ago. R.I.P. Mike. They say that golf is like life, but don’t believe them. Golf is more complicated than that with the number of mood swings you go through in just one round! In 2010 I achieved two things on my golf bucket list: 1. I played at the Old Course on my first trip to Scotland which was sponsored by Chivas. 2. In the same year, on 2nd December, UAE National Day, I had my first hole-in-one on the Majlis 4th hole. Since then, I have had one more hole-in-one in 2017. The best part of this was that it was witnessed by none other than Rory Mcllroy. The following year, for the first time, I also managed to get down to a single figure handicap of 7.9! I have been on many overseas golf trips with my friends but one of the trips to Antalya, which was arranged by Emirates Golf Club in April 2015, which was simply wonderful. I have since been on many more trips to fascinating countries, the latest having been this summer to Ireland which was organised by Paul Byrne and which was very special!
Dear Members, In 1994 I became a member of Emirates Golf Club, starting with a handicap of 28 which is now 11.5 after playing this game for 25 years and being a member of this fabulous Emirates Golf Club.
winning trophies (by the way I have none of these skills). Then, to cap it all, he arranged a great Captain’s golf trip to Ireland. Thank you Paul.
The Mixed Season Opener is scheduled for Friday 4th October and I am already feeling nervous about my Captain’s drive!
Thank you Sulafa for always being helpful and raising funds for charity and staff. You have been a wonderful Lady Captain.
I would like to thank colleagues of all departments at the Club who are always smiling and helpful and who make it a real pleasure for members to use all the facilities and outlets.
I am looking forward to assisting and working together with Lady Captain Yana for the Club. Yana – you will be a superb Lady Captain.
Emirates Golf Club is like my second home. All my golfing friends disagree and they say that this is my first home (luckily they don’t say this to my wife).
It’s also time to welcome our ViceCaptains, Boyd Edmondson and Naema Maya and I look forward to working with you both.
I guess this could be one of the reasons that Senior Management selected me as Captain for the 2019-2020 season. Thank you Chris, Barney and wasl.
This season’s golfing calendar is now available so please pick up a copy from reservations desk when you are passing. We have an inaugural tournament being planned between Emirates Golf Club and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club so please look out for more details.
My predecessor Paul, has been an amazing Captain…from being able to sing, recite poems and dance, to
Thank you Jacqui for your continued efforts putting together Club Life magazine - you are truly a rock star! On a final note…I would play every day if I could; it’s cheaper than going to a shrink and it has probably kept more people sane. Cheers. INTRODUCING LADY CAPTAIN YANA JAMIESON
in’s Lady Capta Message
in’s Lady Capta Message

I was born and grew up in St Petersburg, Russia. Once I completed my education, achieving an Economics degree, my husband and I established a Trading Company which eventually led us to the UAE.In 1996 we relocated with our two children, Vica and Jerry to Dubai and for the next three years we continued to operate the company. However, life took us in two different directions. I first met Peter in July 1999 and our first dinner date was in the Argentinian restaurant at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, which was quickly followed by a second date at Ravi’s, leaving me totally confused about whether we should have a third date! I never would have guessed where my third date with him would be! He took me to Emirates Golf Club driving range (it was 40 degrees!). Peter proposed to me at the Marlinsky Theatre, St Petersburg during a performance of Swan Lake. A true romantic! We got married in Vancouver which was beautifully arranged by Peter’s sister Jacqueline, who calls that city home. It was truly a special day. From early 2006 until 2015 I was managing a successful Real Estate company with my partner and good friend Asgar Patel. During this time I also managed property investment portfolios
for a number of clients and established a reputation in interior redesign and decoration. Back to the beginning of my golf career… having never seen a game of golf, I remember my first introduction to the ‘honourable’ Club members Paula Johnstone, Margaret Bain, Joan Legnar and Jacqui Barry. At that time it seemed so strange to me that these ladies could spend hours talking about a game with its unique language (par, birdie, bogey, fourball, fore, gimmees) and their passion clearly meant that I either joined them or said bye bye! I borrowed my first set of clubs (Pings) from Paula Johnstone in September 1999 and I loved this game from the beginning. Then I really wanted to improve my skills as I had reached the point that my unfortunate competitive nature would not allow me to be beaten by my daughter Vica, who had adopted this game with a passion. Golf is a relatively new game in Russia; t took 12 years for Vica, her husband Alex and their son Alex Junior to get this bug, (the golf course is a one hour drive away from them), but now they are totally hooked and they even play in the snow. (The golf season in St Petersburg is from April until October at best). Could Alex junior be the first Russian Major winner? My son Jerry is a member of a club in Manchester and he squeezes in the odd game when he can get away from his business, Corner Boxing and we try to have family golf holidays a couple of times a year. Over the past two years, Vica and I have won
the Gorki 24 hour tournament ‘White Nights’ in St Petersburg and also Peter, Alex and Jerry have won a first and third place. It’s a great, fun tournament to attend. I now have the pleasure of sharing my love of this game with my daughter and we have committed to a week a year, without husbands, playing a course somewhere in the world together. So far we have played in the Dominican Republic, Miami, France, Portugal, Moscow and Spain. I have had a few wins, but my special trophies include the Mixed Matchplay with Peter in 2006 (we played the final in separate buggies!), Ladies’ Matchplay with my friend Josie, and again the Mixed Matchplay with the lovely Eric Koeman. Like all our ladies I enjoy our competitive Monday tournaments, and the very special Curtisy Cup and Nations Cup. I’ve been fortunate to have played many great courses around the world including in Argentina, Bali, Baku, Brazil, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Finland, Florida, India, Malaysia, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam … every one is a new special experience and I have been lucky to meet many interesting people while enjoying a cocktail at the 19th hole. It is difficult to pick an outright favourite but Fancourt in South Africa is certainly up there. My other interests include interior design (my real passion), cooking/entertaining, gym/yoga, and Peter is teaching me bridge but now it is my great honour to be Emirates Golf Club Lady Captain. I know that Captain Ishu, Vice-Captains Boyd and Naima and I will do our best to maintain the high standards set by our predecessors. I often wonder what my life would have been like without golf (but I can definitely skip Ravis).
Dear All, Summer is nearly over and my big day arrived on 1st September when I moved into the spotlight and my new parking spot, feeling nervous but also very excited. It’s good to be back and getting ready for the new season after the long summer break. Having seen, first-hand, the efforts of all 18 Lady Captains since I joined the Club, I clearly have a lot to live up to. I would like to offer congratulations to Captain Paul and Lady Captain Sulafa for making their year memorable, much fun, and setting the bar so high for future Captains to follow. Being Lady Captain of Emirates Golf Club is an honour but it is also a great responsibility to all our lady members. I will endeavour to do my best to make
your season enjoyable and, as you know, it is not easy to please everyone all of the time. I hope to be a good ambassador for the Club and I am fortunate to have a very supportive management team under Barney. Sadly though, we are losing Rhys to Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club and I wish him the very best. He will definitely be missed by all the ladies...... who is to replace him on our next golfing tour? My friend Naima will be invaluable as Lady Vice-Captain… the more she does, the less I need to worry. She is ready. We all know that Club Life magazine is a first class and professional magazine and I can’t imagine the effort that is required from Jacqui Barry. Jacqui you are special and I promise to get my monthly column in on time! The Club F&B Department has radically changed for the better and I am looking forward to our new menus for our Monday lunches as well as the new daily menus.
We have a very exciting season ahead with our own Monday tournaments, Curtisy Cup etc, but also the increasing number of Inter-Club challenges - it’s always great to compete against the other golf clubs. In addition, Naima and I will be ready to accept ‘friendly challenges’ from our ladies. We enjoy excellent facilities at Emirates Golf Club and we now have even more with the addition of the Fire Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates. I understand that TOPGOLF is to be operational early next year and this again will expand the facilities and increase the fun (hopefully members will get preferential rates). So clearly, I’m truly honoured to be Lady Captain for the very best golf club in the region and beyond. Together with our Club Captain Ishu, Vice-Captains Boyd and Naima, I hope that we will all have a very enjoyable season ahead. Yana Jamieson Lady Captain - 2019-2020

By 2020 Captains, Fiona Berry (Europe) and Noemy Bartoul (Rest of the World) There are to be some changes to the selection process as outlined below by the Captains… We have discussed amongst ourselves the qualification rules and the team numbers and we have come to the conclusion that we would like all ladies to be fully aware of these at the start of the season. We are aware of the changes in team numbers over the years from 16 to 18, which took place after much consultation, but after discussion, we have decided that we would like to keep each team at the current 18 to allow a greater number of players an opportunity to play, as it is such a popular competition. We have such a large ladies’ section so this number gives more ladies the chance to participate in the team. In addition, there will of course be the two reserves.
The Curtisy Cup HOW IT ALL BEGAN…
amateur golfers, which is contested by teams representing the United States and Great Britain & Ireland.
always ladies who do not play well in competitions but they are excellent in matchplay.
Emirates Golf Club opened in March 1988 and our first Lady Captain was Margaret Bain whose captaincy was for two years. At the time of opening, there was a small group of experienced golfers with a much larger group of complete beginners, (myself included) so it was no easy task for Margaret! Wind on two years and all those complete beginners were now playing regularly and all of them had established handicaps, some even reaching single figures in that short time. Monday mornings were the highlight of the week and competitions were fun and well subscribed. The Wednesday mornings then became a golf morning too that we organised ourselves, played in fourballs; We regularly had sixteen players each week and getting tee times was not a big problem then either.
At that time I was playing and winning a lot of squash tournaments and running road races so, with an abundance of trophies gathering dust, I replaced the plaque on the front of one of them and that is still the same trophy we have today, 28 years later!
In 1994 the team was increased to 16 and in 1996 all players qualified through Golfer of the Year with no Captains’ picks. In more recent years the number of players increased again to 18.
By Jacqui Barry
At the end of May 1991, as we were approaching the summer months and people were preparing to travel, I suggested that, for the final Wednesday, since there were a number of different nationalities playing, we should split into two teams - Europe and the Rest of the World - to have a match. Everyone was enthusiastic about the idea so I decided to give it a name and supply a trophy. The Curtisy Cup seemed fitting as a name tying it in with the Curtis Cup, the best known team trophy for women
The first Curtisy Cup, captained by Doris Aycock and I, was great fun and we had a brilliant time celebrating that evening at the back of the Spike Bar with drinks and sandwiches, still all in our navy blue shirts (Europe) and red shirts (ROW). Our Club Management recognised this as being a really good event and decided to make it an official Club event starting in 1992 and Doris and I were asked to be Captains that year too. The first few years, Club Management chose the Captains for each team and the entire team for Europe and for Rest of the World was selected by the respective Captains. At that time we were only twelve in a team but this was increased to 16 after a couple of years since the event was so popular. A few years later it was decided (again by Club Management) that the players would qualify for their team through their Golfer of the Year points to avoid favouritism when it came to selection. However, only ten ladies qualified and the Captain was allowed two picks which was great because there are
Without a doubt the Curtisy Cup has grown into an event in which everyone wants to play and qualification is still through points earned in Medal competitions. The morning rounds are always greensomes and the afternoon rounds are fourball betterball matches - a format which has not changed since the very beginning. Whether you are a player, a ViceCaptain or a Captain, it is always such a pleasure to participate in this exciting and closely contested event; without a doubt Emirates Golf Club colleagues always do their utmost to make it a great day…flags on carts, scoring, tee time allocation, F&B etc…and the rest is entirely up to us. What is it that makes it such an eagerly awaited event…the build up to the event with team meetings and team socials, the unique atmosphere on the day and the support from friends and team-mates. Win or lose, I don’t think there has ever been an occasion when players have not joined in with the fun and celebrations afterwards. The camaraderie is second to none, the celebrations, the singing, the laughter and the fun!
Points are to be accumulated and allocated for 17 players and the reserves through Medal scores (net) concluding with the April Medal, as well as the through the Ladies’ Club Championship. However, the final 18th place will continue to go to the person with the best net score in the April Medal who has not previously qualified for their respective team through Curtisy Cup points.
WHAT’S ON IN SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER
Although this may seem harsh on anyone bordering on the 18th place, it gives an opportunity for someone who has come into form or perhaps has been unable to play many Medals, to have that final opportunity of gaining a Curtisy Cup place. We understand that there are arguments on both sides but that is how we would like it to be for the 2020 Curtisy Cup and why we would like everyone to know the position at the start of the golfing season.

Emirates Golf Club’s Junior Elite golfers excel on Los Angeles trip July 2019
A handful of promising members of the Club’s Junior Elite programme, managed by Stephen Deane, tasted international competition in Los Angeles recently where they competed in three different tournaments. After touching down in Los Angeles, the elite golfers competed in three ‘Southern California PGA Junior Tour’ events at Skylinks Golf Club, Chester Washington Golf Club and Dad Miller Golf Club. Member Hugo Garcia tasted success, finishing no lower than third in all three under-18s categories, while Andrew Jamal won the 12-14s division at Skylinks. There were also good solid finishes for Yash Gupta and Chris Jamal. The juniors also took the opportunity to spend time at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and University Southern California (USC), with a view to studying and competing at these prestigious universities by earning scholarships in the future. The team also had the unique opportunity to play two of California’s top rated courses - Trump National Los Angeles and Riviera Country Club, annual host to the PGA Tour’s Genesis Open.
Emirates Golf Club is fortunate to have some of the strongest young junior golfers in the region representing our Club, and it is fantastic to contribute to their development and present them with amazing opportunities such as this recent trip to Los Angeles. Sincere thanks go out our sponsor swissglobal who have played a significant role in helping us develop the programme in 2019 by supporting the team with uniforms, coach transfers to and from local UAE events, and, in addition, the bursary fund for the LA trip was a tremendous support and one we truly appreciate. We look forward to continuing this successful relationship in the future.
Stephen Deane, Head of Academies for Dubai Golf, accompanied the juniors to California and he was delighted with how the trip went: “Our Peter Cow-en Junior Academy is built on Peter Cowen’s philosophy of his ‘three Rs’ that are needed for being successful in life – Respect yourself, Respect those who helped you and Responsibility,” he said. “I constantly use these three Rs to help our talented juniors selfevaluate and take control of any situation they face on or off the golf course. These principles were certainly on display during our LA trip and I was proud of our Junior Elites, regardless of scores, on how they conducted themselves. It was also evident that these life skills play a big part in the USC and UCLA head coaches’ selection process for future team players.”
Four important things every Pilates instructor should teach you By Jeanique Pilates 1. The basic 10 mat Pilates
The basic 10 Pilates exercises are the fundamental movements that appear through the Pilates System - mat, reformer, tower, chair. By learning and understanding these movements, you will have a better grasp of what you are trying to achieve in your body as well as being able to use the equipment safely and wisely.
2. How to breathe
Breathing is at the centre of the Pilates work. “Above all, learn how to breathe properly”, shows that understanding how to breathe will make it easy to move with fluidity and grace whilst practising Pilates.
3. How to move from your centre
The centreline, which is surrounded by the abdominal core muscles, a.k.a the power house, is what makes Pilates so unique. By moving from your centre, you will have uniformly developed muscles and stronger abdominal muscles which then decreases the risk of injuries – an important skill to learn to move better throughout your day.
4. How to manage the equipment
The creation of equipment to support the body during a Pilates class allows you to achieve wholeness, moving with grace, fluidity and control. In order to make the most out of your classes you need to learn how to mount, dismount and transition from all equipment safely. Learning how to transition between equipment is part of maintaining your workout and helps to ensure that you stay focused. www.jeaniqueyogandpilates.com | +091553065110 jeaniqueyogapilates@gmail.com | @jeaniqueyogaandpilatesdubai

If you wait around at Emirates Golf Club on a Tuesday morning, chances are you’ll see a group of students being dropped off for an hour of practice before they head off to school. A quick glance down the driving range and you will see one person clipping a few balls - or ‘nuggets,’ as he likes to call them - into the Dubai sunrise.
First of all, I would like to welcome you all back after the summer and I hope that you all had a great one wherever you may have been.
Stephen Deane has had an unorthodox but inspirational journey within the game of golf. A decorated hockey player for Northern Ireland, injury put his dreams to an abrupt close. Still, the then 17-year-old student picked up a different kind of ball game. Only this one involved a club, not a stick.
Projects around the Club have been important for us this year with several being accomplished.
As the 10 or so students warm up, Deane is talking them through today’s agenda. Tuesday mornings are typically supervised practice. Each of his students is working on a specific part of their game, and during this hour, he lets them loose under his watchful eye.

“I have an obligation to grow the game and develop my students.” Stephen Deane: “Being a golf professional, I have an obligation to grow the game and develop my students.” Deane says in an exclusive chat with Gulf News, referring to the Elite Programme of Emirates Golf Club. If he sees something, he says it. Otherwise, he knows that these are valuable routines that his students are stealing from the day - mostly because he knows other schoolkids haven’t even woken up yet. “With young talent, you have to show them that you care about them. Ever since I started this programme, I’ve wanted to pass my knowledge on. Whether they pursue golf at a higher level, that’s another question. But as long as I can help them lead happy lives, I’d be happy. You do that by showing them you care about them
We have been working hard throughout the summer as this is usually our busiest time due to having our course closures and projects to do. The course closures went very well with both the Faldo and the Majlis bouncing back quickly. We are in a good place going into the cooler months and we are looking forward to the start of the golfing season.

as humans, and not just students.”
learnt some really good things.”
The Tuesday morning session is just one out of six different sessions the Elite programme does at Emirates Golf Club every week. On Mondays, they train with biomechanics specialist, Jonathan Craddock. On Wednesday mornings, the squad is in the gym with Richard Dunsby. Every Thursday evening, after school, the Elites play a nine-hole competition where they earn Order of Merit points that build up over the course of the season and on Saturdays, Alastair Brown works on their short game.
“Now, top college golf coaches from California want to visit us and learn more about our students - it’s an exciting time, we have big things lined up for next season, including a trip to Florida in the winter. We held our own against some of the best competition that Southern California had to offer us, and that’s a testament to the work our kids put in this past season.”
“Our students do their drills every day. Being part of the Peter Cowen system, we’ve helped them understand how a few minutes every day, even without a club, can help them make significant progress.”
“A lot of this is thanks to swissglobal, who sponsor our programme and make this extremely cost-efficient for the next wave of golfing talent coming out of this country. Without their support, this trip would not have been possible,” he added.
2. Chipping Green Re-design. The chipping green has completely changed; it is growing in now and will be ready for the start of October. The green has doubled in size and we now only have one bunker. The grass species has changed from Paspalum to Bermuda so that it is the same as the Majlis course. The playing area has increased in size so there are more places to chip from and we feel that this will work a lot better going forward.
3. Majlis 6th Green Extension. As you all know the 6th green got very small over the past year and this was mainly due to issues on the edges and us repairing with surrounds grass. We decided to make a huge effort in enlarging the green and I am happy to say that it has grown in very well. Levels are still not as we would like and it will look different for a while, but it is going in the right direction. The aim is to make sure that we have more places for pin positions and it will also help to move away from being a very hard green to hit.
4. Tee Extensions on the Majlis Course. We noticed over the busy periods that certain tees would have a lot more wear and it wasn’t always pleasant to play from, so we made an effort to extend those tees so that we can spread this wear easier and present the tees a lot better.
Over the course of the last few years, Deane has been able to develop a breed of golfers that are able to take their game to the next level. Graduates of this programme, like Kavita Sehmi, have gone on to play on the Ladies European Tour here, international junior tournaments and high-level Division 1 golf programmes in America.
5. Chipping Green at Members’ Tee. This is the last project to start which we will have just begun. We will remove one bunker and extend the green at the member’s tee so that players can have more space to chip from and more area of green to hit at. This will complete the members’ tee jobs and I hope that you enjoy the way it is now laid out.
Just recently, Deane got back from a weeklong training trip with his students. On a trip to Los Angeles, the entire group trained, competed, saw the sights, and even met and spoke with college golf coaches. “The Elites programme has been a pioneer in the sense that we took our students out to Asia as well as Los Angeles. Our kids didn’t just play, but they also competed. We had a win, a bunch of top-three finishes, and
The members’ tee has been extended so that we can spread wear a lot better with an increased playing area. We have extended backwards and towards the 1st hole on the Majlis course. I hope this will help members to get a free bay when busy and that it will also improve the whole experience.
There have been some other small things done around the course which I am sure you will notice and I do hope that you enjoy the changes we have made. Congratulations to Els Club’s Sujjan Singh and our Pro, Dong Lee, on winning the UAE PGA Season Opener on the Faldo Course, both shooting -4
Wishing you all the best for the coming season. Matthew Perry

BASEBALL SWING DRILL TO IMPROVE YOUR DRIVING

Statistics show that most when Tour players are using a driver they are hitting up on the ball or have a shallow angle of attack, have an in to out swing path (swing right) and have their arms fully extended through impact. This produces a ball flight of high bomb draws. The average club golfer, on the other hand, tends to have too steep an angle of attack hitting down on the ball, swing path too much out to in (swing left) and their arms get too close to the body. This produces a ball flight of weak slice. To create the feeling of the Tour player stated above I have a very simple drill for you to try. Start off in a baseball swing position with the hands and club positioned in front of your chest.
Laguna National is one of Singapore’s top golf and country clubs, featuring 36-holes of championship golf including the new World Classic Course and the Masters Course.
Make a baseball swing backswing which creates the feeling of weight shift into the right side and full rotation of the shoulders.
Designed by Andy Dye and opened in 2011, the World Classic is a tremendously challenging course inspired by the great layouts of the world. The Masters Course is most often associated with its long run of hosting the European Tour’s Singapore Masters for many years; it has featured champions such as Vijay Singh, Colin Montgomerie, Nick Dougherty and Lianwei Zhang. A beautiful parkland layout, it is a stern test of golf with magnificent trees and beautiful greenery that is a hallmark of the island state. An ultra-modern city known for its beautiful gardens, Singapore makes a great stopover or springboard into the region with a medley of Chinese, Malay and Indian
Swing the club down slowly stopping the club just before impact on the ball. Do this step a few times before trying to put it all together for a full swing. Always reset yourself into baseball start position and then swing back like a baseball player and through swing like a golfer. Repeat until comfortable and then try to hit 15-20 balls on the range with the drill.

THE NEW RULES OF GOLF – TOP 20 MUST KNOW CHANGES OFFICIAL AS OF JANUARY 1st 2019
As you know, Rhys is now based at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club as Director of Golf so this is his final article for Club Life magazine. Thank you Rhys for all the articles you have submitted over the past few years which have always been interesting and informative…and always submitted on time!! Best wishes to you in your new role.
Relief Area: The area where you must drop a ball when taking relief under a rule.
As we start another golfing season here in Dubai, here is a reminder of the top 20 rule changes that you should all be aware of the next time you head out and play. Firstly, to help with the understanding of the rule changes, here are some newly defined terms that can be found in the ‘definitions’ section of the rule book. Embedded: When your ball is in its own pitchmark made as a result of your previous stroke and where part of the ball is below the level of the ground. General Area: The area of the course that covers all of the course except for the other four defined areas: (1) The teeing ground of the hole you are playing, (2) all penalty areas, (3) all bunkers, (4) the putting green of the hole you are playing. *previously defined as ‘Through the Green’. Penalty Area: An area from which relief with a one stroke penalty is allowed if your ball comes to rest there.
20 MUST KNOW RULE CHANGES:
2. Measure the area in which to drop your ball with the longest club in your bag (except a putter) When taking a drop, the size of the relief area will always be measured by the longest club in your bag, except your putter, whether one or two club lengths, depending on the type of relief being taken. However, you don’t need to actually use your longest club for this and then go back to your bag to get a pitching wedge, for example. If the longest club in your bag for the round is 43 inches then a club length is 43 inches for you for that round. 3. You must now drop in and play from the relief area. When taking a drop, you must always have a reference point. From there you will measure the one or two club lengths in which to drop. That radius will be your “relief area” that the ball must stay within; if it rolls out then it should be re-dropped a second time before then being placed.
1. You must now drop your ball from knee height (NOT shoulder height). A simple one to understand and to do. The aim is that dropping from a lower height will result in less re-drops from the ball bouncing and rolling too far away.
6. If you accidentally move your ball when searching for it, replace it without penalty. A fair change to this rule that there is now NO PENALTY if you move your ball whilst searching for it. If moved, the ball should be replaced. If the spot is unknown you must estimate it, and when placing the ball try to recreate the lie of the ball as much as possible.
16. In bunkers you cannot touch the sand with your club in the area right in front of or right behind your ball, during your backswing or in taking practice swings. Despite the rules in a bunker being relaxed (as 15 above) you STILL CANNOT touch the sand with your club near the ball or make a practice swing.
7. No penalty for a double hit – it only counts as one stroke. (Good news for those with the dreaded golfing yips…)
17. Free relief is allowed if your ball is embedded on the fairway or in the rough (but ‘embedded’ means that part of your ball is below the level of the ground) This rule has been extended to all ‘General Areas’ that include both the fairway and the rough. This has been introduced as an embedded ball lying anywhere is not considered part of the normal challenge of playing golf.
8. No penalty if your ball hits you or your equipment accidentally after a stroke. If your ball hits you, your bag, your cart (equipment) after making a stroke you must then just play the ball as it lies for your next stroke. 9. No penalty if your ball strikes the flagstick when you have chosen to leave it in the hole. You can now choose to have the flagstick left in as well as attended or removed. Your intention must be clearly stated before putting, you cannot change your intentions once the stroke has been made and the ball is in motion.
12. Ball marked, lifted and replaced on putting green is moved by wind to another position – replace ball on original spot. If your ball is moved by an outside agency such as wind or any other natural forces such as a slope then: If you had not marked your ball yet then play from its new position. If you had marked the ball and replaced it then replace the ball back on the same spot.
There are yellow penalty areas = two relief options (previously known as a yellow water hazard). There are red penalty areas = three relief options (previously known as a red lateral water hazard).
4. When dropping back on the line, your ball cannot be played from nearer the hole than your chosen reference point. If taking relief by going back in line with the flag (example: penalty area or unplayable ball), you must identify a mark on that line to measure your ‘relief area’; once that mark is identified and the ball is dropped you cannot play if the ball rolls nearer the hole and out in front of your measured “relief area”. *connected to point 3 above. 5. Time to search – 3 minutes (NOT 5 minutes) Search time reduced from 5 to 3 minutes. As before, your time starts when the player, his/ her caddie, partner or partner’s caddie begins to search for it. The reason for the change is
18. Unplayable ball in bunker – extra option to drop outside the bunker for TWO penalty strokes. By going back as far as you want in line with the flag outside of the bunker, but this will cost you two strokes. Previously you could only drop outside of the bunker by going back to where you played your last stroke for only a one stroke penalty, but that could have meant going back 150 yards, for example.
15. In bunkers you can remove loose impediments. The rules have been relaxed to allow you to remove leaves, twigs, stones or any other loose impediments in a bunker. So no longer
Recommendations are: • To be more prompt in preparing for and making each stroke i.e. BE READY • To be more prompt in moving from one stroke to the next i.e. WALK FASTER • To be more prompt in moving to the next teeing ground after completing a hole i.e. CLEAR THE GREEN IMMEDIATELY When it is your turn to play: • 40 seconds is the maximum recommended time per stroke. This time begins when you are free to play without any interference or distractions
I appreciate the above can be a lot to take in all at once, please take some time to digest just a couple of the changes at a time. At each Club event you will be given the list of these 20 key changes as a reminder for you whilst on course; the new rule books, which I’m pleased to say have been simplified, and now include diagrams to make easier to understand are also readily available at the Club. Please don’t worry or stress about the new changes s this is a great opportunity to grasp a better understanding of the modernised rules of golf and we, at the Club, are here to help you to do that.
13. Penalty areas replace water hazards and you can move loose impediments, ground your club and take practice swings in penalty areas, just as you can on the fairway or in the rough. A big change that now allows us to act the same in a penalty area as we can on the fairway or rough as listed above. No longer do we need to panic about grounding the club or touching or moving anything. 14. You can’t take relief from a penalty area unless you are at least 95% certain your ball is in the penalty area. The number 95% has been introduced in line with being ‘known or virtually certain’ that your ball is in a penalty area. If there is still a small doubt, the ball is deemed as lost.
19
Playing out of turn: • Is allowed in stroke play; you are now allowed to play out of turn in a SAFE and responsible way to save time…also known as Ready Golf! • In matchplay, you can play out of turn IF AGREED between both players to save time.
10. Spike marks and other shoe damage on the putting green can be repaired If your ball lies ON or OFF the putting green you are entitled to repair any damages such as spike marks, shoe marks, animal damage, turf plugs and seams of cut turf. The fixing and repairs must be done promptly and must not improve the line of play beyond the repair of the initial damage. 11. Accidentally move the ball on the putting green? There is no penalty and the ball is replaced. If there is any accidental movement of the ball or ball marker by yourself or anyone else then simply replace the ball or ball marker with NO PENALTY.
20. Pace of Play – it is recommended that you have no longer than 40 seconds to make a stroke (and usually you should be able to play quicker than that) and READY GOLF in stroke play is encouraged. The rules now emphasise a prompt pace of play. The rule reminds golfers that their pace of play will affect how long it takes others to play their rounds, both in their group and those in the groups behind.

Colour refresh
The summer sun and chlorine is a big no-no, when it comes to maintaining hair colour. Chlorine is particularly damaging because it is a bleach-based solution and an oxidising chemical - the number one reason why hair colour fades or becomes dull so quickly! So, don’t put off coming in for a colour refresh to get your vibrant locks back! Price: Starts from
Coconut and Olive oil hair treatment
AED 400
Coconut oil and olive oil are natural treatments to promote healthy hair. Both fight dryness, with coconut oil being particularly effective in preventing frizz. Coconut oil penetrates deep into the hair shaft and also protects hair from protein loss, which can lead to hair damage. Adding olive oil will moisturise your scalp and discourage flakes! So sit back and enjoy a hot oil head massage while we nurse your hair back to health!

Sadly Past lady Captain, Sophie Longstreet passed away last month. Sophie had been Lady Captain 20022003. I have very fond memories of Sophie who was a very good and and avid golfer or should I say a golf nut’ as she would never turn down a game of golf. She was extremely kind, compassionate and generous, she made time for everyone and always had a smile on her face. Our sincere condolences go to her husband Wayne and the family. From the family… It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Sophie Pauline Longstreet (née Yacucha) on August 26, 2019. She was surrounded by her family and passed peacefully in her sleep. Sophie was born on May 1st, 1947 in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. She moved to Winnipeg at an early age to work in beauty services. She married at 19 and then took up a nomadic life in the oilfield with her husband and children. Although Sophie worked as a beautician, she thrived as a wife, a mother, grandmother and homemaker.
She always enjoyed fun times: laughing over a Caesar, playing the slots, and hosting the warmest of parties. She excelled at amateur sports from curling to bowling to softball and eventually her ultimate love – golf. As an expat in so many countries, she was always engaged in whichever community she found herself. Sophie is a beloved figure in places as far apart as Texas and Oman or Scotland and South Africa. Her tenacity, grace, kindness, and passion shined for everyone to see especially through her love of golf. She dedicated herself to the sport like few others could ever have achieved; she blossomed on the green. She became a pillar of the Dubai golfing community which culminated in her being nominated as Lady Captain at Emirates Golf Course in 2002. While her spinal injury 13 years ago certainly impacted her in unimaginable ways, Sophie’s resolve, strong spirit and love of her family led her to remain an active woman. She continued to live independently and worked every day to keep her home the way she wanted it to be.
Sophie is survived by her husband, Wayne Longstreet; her children and their partners Michelle Roberts (Geoff) and Shaun Longstreet (Lu); her grandchildren, Jake and Giselle; her siblings, Sylvia, Oxena (Ray), Harry (Leanna), and Elizabeth. A memorial service was held on 5th September In lieu of flowers, donations can still be made in memory of Sophie Longstreet to The First Tee, an international organisation that promotes the sport of golf and its values to underserved youth. This reflects Sophie’s love of the game and her unending generosity to children (http:// thefirsttee.org/). Because Sophie’s network of friends and family is global, there will be a later celebration of life to honour her and to allow people time to make plans. On 1st, May 2020, a gathering of Sophie’s extended global family and a friendly golf game is planned for Kelowna, British Colombia. Details will be forthcoming and updates will be posted on Facebook.

WINNER – ALEX MCNESS
After 14 weeks Alex McNess won his first Eclectic Trophy. The Eclectic is a hard one to win as you don’t necessarily have to shoot consistently good scores each week but you need lots of net birdies and eagles locked in. Flashes of brilliance play a key part over the weeks and that’s exactly what Alex showed. However, it was very close, with Suresh finishing only 0.85 of shot behind Alex and with Lloyd Bowles finishing in third on a net 59.83. 77 players took part in Eclectic 25… Here are the top 3:

Dean has now won his 14th Monday Night which is amazingly his sixth win of 2019 - almost as good a record as Russ Curtis back in 2017.
Wendy grew up in Zimbabwe, although she is South African by birth. She has lived in Dubai for almost six years and has recently started a career break after working with Deloitte and other ‘Big Four’. She works in forensic technology, helping clients sift through their evidence in big international disputes and some very juicy local fraud matters. Having recently married Andrew the pairs’ golf has got hotter and hotter. Sparks are flying!!
AOP SUMMER PLAYER OF THE MONTH (POTM is calculated by adding up a players best three Stableford scores of the month) Over the summer Dean has been on fire and he became the first person to win back to back Player of the Month awards. It has also been good to see Wendy playing some of her best golf ever and winning her first POTM award over August!
