2019 CLUB CHAMPIONS
Michael Mezei & Jayshree Gupta
1
Editorial
Last month our Club was extremely busy with many Club competitions and social events, including Medals, Men’s and Ladies’ Club Championships and the Kohlman Nations Cup which, as always, was well supported and why wouldn’t it be? It was its usual high standard with on-course food, beverages, music and mini-massages. The golf afternoon was followed by a prize-giving function at the poolside which was well attended and which continued until late at night The sponsor of this event is Past Captain Moshe Kohli and the event goes from strength to strength each year which would not be possible without Moshe’s continued support.

Congratulations to Mike Mezei and Jayshree Gupta who are our 2019 Club Champions. Both pro-duced excellent rounds of golf in difficult, windy conditions. Well done! While we are now allowed carts on the Majlis, it is still wonderful to be able to walk the course and even have the use of a caddie. The weather is perfect for golf and the course definitely benefits from not having constant cart use. Both courses are in great condition, especially the Majlis just a few weeks after the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Thanks to the efforts and dedication of Golf Course Superintendent, Matt and his team who do such a fantastic job. Please do your part in maintaining course conditions by repairing pitch marks, filling in divots and raking bunkers.

All the outlets within the Club seem to be buzzing with activity these days. Spike Bar and the Terrace are constantly busy as is Jones the Grocer and Carine. Don’t forget to try out Roseleaf Café located at the gym and spa area. The recreation department is buzzing too with many weekly activities, personal training, tennis, padel tennis and swimming. UPANDRUNNING has various specialist physiotherapists to hand should you be suffering an injury, whilst SensAsia Spa offers the much needed relaxation therapies; in addition to all of this, we now have Project Beauty which is a beauty salon located at the Dubai Golf office area for all your pampering. We have a fantastic Club and there is something for everyone so make the most of it and maybe even explore something different.

Dear Members,
The Men’s Club Championship took place over the Faldo and Majlis courses on 1st and 2nd March in admittedly extremely tough conditions with a wind and sand storm adding to the difficulty of the challenge. Mike Mezei produced a fabulous performance with rounds of 69 and 74 to finish one-under par for the championship, claiming an 8-shot victory. Well done to Mike and Jayshree! Faldo Course Lighting We are delighted to announce that our Faldo course will become the first in the region to promote sustainable lighting. In conjunction with Etihad Esco and Abacus Lighting, we are currently retrofitting our Faldo course with LED lights. Since the launch of night golf in April 2010, it has become very popular, especially in the warmer

lighting system is expected to give light to the course for up to 15 years. The new lights are now installed on the Par 3 course and, as of today, (7th March) holes 1 to 13 of the Faldo course are complete. Note, once all 18 holes are completed, further alignment will take place to make sure the course and experience is the best we can provide. We hope to finish the exercise by the middle of March including the driving range. If you are a regular ‘night golfer’ then we hope you enjoy the improved playing conditions and if you haven’t tried night golf for a while on the Par 3 course or on the Faldo then please give it another go! We will continue to tweak the lights to provide the best experience possible and we will showcase the new facility at the Ladies European Tour event from 1st 3rd May – ‘The Moonlight Classic’.

I am pleased to inform you that the new sustainable lighting will improve the overall quality of light across the golf course, and bring up to 58% energy savings.

Captain’s Message

Dear all, Where is the time going? We are already into March and my time as Captain seems to be flying by. I hope everyone is enjoying the perfect golfing weather and making the most of all the facilities at the Club. February was a busy month as always and well done to Team India on winning the Kohlman Nations Cup. As always our dear friend Moshe always puts on a wonderful day and evening and this year was no exception. Thanks Moshe for your continued support of this event. Looking at the Club diary it’s clear that the month of March is going to be extremely busy. Well done to all those who participated in the Club Championship. The conditions were very testing with high winds for both rounds. Congratulations to our new Club Champion Mike Mezei who shot a 69 and 74 over the two days…his name forever immortalised now on the championship board. We have the Indian Invitational
also this month which is always a great day and this is followed by the Chairman’s Cup a week later. If that still isn’t enough for you, we finish the month with our Medal and the following day we have the DG Pro-Am series so there is plenty of competition golf for us all. Please note that both courses are closed on March 20th and 21st for the annual IADC golf day. Best of luck to all who participate in this and I know it’s definitely the biggest amateur event the Club or any club in the region holds. At this stage I hope you have all received your name-inscribed Planet or Plastic drinking bottle. Soon the Club will be as plastic free as they possibly can be. If you haven’t received yours yet contact the Club and let’s get this very worthwhile initiative up and running. Our members’ party happens on March 27th and I hope to see many of you attending. This is always a nice gesture from the Club to host all the members for a memorable night of

fun with plenty of food, drinks and dancing. The theme this year is black and white so I look forward to seeing everyone dressed up to the nines. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Lady Captain Sulafa all the best for her Captain’s Day on 25th March. Sulafa has been a joy to work with since we joined forces as ViceCaptains in 2017. I’m pretty sure it will be a fun-filled day and a lively evening. I have no doubt that she is in training to hit the ball a long way up the first fairway. Atamanaa lak kl Khayr. ( I wish you all the best!) I would like to remind you all to put April 26th in your diary for Men’s Captain Day. As always if you have any suggestions to make the Club even better or if you have any issues that you need clarifying please feel free to contact anyone on the Management Consultative Committee. SPOTLIGHT ON
Viktor Joachim Kofod-Olsen
My name is Viktor Joachim Kofod-Olsen, I am 12 years old and I am Danish. I have lived in different countries since I was born, such as Senegal in West Africa, Denmark, my native country, for one year and now I am living in Dubai which is my longest home, where I have been for nearly 10 years. My big passion is golf which I have played since I was approximately four years old. My home course has always been Emirates Golf Club, where I play almost all weekdays and weekends - Majlis, Faldo or the Par 3 course. Growing up in Dubai is a real pleasure as we are spoiled with good weather and many different golf courses that all are kept in really good condition. Another privilege we have living here in Dubai, is the weather, making it quite easy to just go out and play. I am a left-handed golfer and, naturally, we are fewer than right-handed players, so I cannot inherit any of my brother’s ‘old clubs’. This means that I am lucky and have got my own new clubs each time! One of my favourite memories from when I started playing golf, is also concerning golf clubs - we were looking for a while for a lefthanded junior golf set as they are, after all, not very common. After trying everywhere, we finally got lucky in Dubai Mall where we found one
set, however PINK, for girls. My parents asked me if I really wanted the set, as it seemed to be for girls but I was so determined to get it and I finally got it and walked proudly with it on my shoulders across the whole mall. My favourite golf course is definitely the Majlis as it is equally a very beautiful and a very challenging course. My favourite hole on that course is the 18th, as it has a challenging blind tee-shot, length with water at the end, trees to the side and naturally a stunning view towards the Club and the skyline. My favourite golfer is Bryson DeChambeau, as he has come up with his own ideas of changing his game based on data, including all his club lengths being cut to a seven iron length, massive grips and mathematics and geophysics, and then he went on to set a tournament record in the Dubai Desert Classic where he shot 24 under par and won. I train with the Elite team at Emirates Golf Club where we have a tight schedule which includes: Monday 4.30pm Biomechanics with Jonathan Tuesday 6.00am Mechanics practice with Stephen Wednesday 6.00am Gym session with Jonathan and Richard Thursday 4.00pm 9 hole competition with Stephen Friday 5.00pm Full swing mechanics with Stephen Saturday 4.00pm Short game mechanics with Alastair Saturday 5.00pm Putting mechanics with Richard I love the game because while you are playing seriously you can also have a bit of fun, and
what is life without that? It is also an interesting game as there are many shots you need to learn how to play and a lot of it, is your mental game! An example, you should not get crazily angry if you hit a bad shot, but instead you should focus your energy on how you will play the next shot and not think back to what happened on the last hole…that has helped me quite a bit lately. My favourite shot is probably when you are in between trees, as you need to think cleverly if you should just hit it out onto the fairway, or if you should try and go between the trees for the goal… My favourite trick to do is juggling the ball on the club – I am rather good at that! Some people have asked me. “So, what is your favourite club in your bag?”. In reality, I don’t have a favourite club! I think you should like all your clubs equally so you don’t start using one specific club and then you actually can’t hit the others as well or as confidently as you should. The strongest part of my game is my short game, which I practise a lot as it is the most important bit, I feel. My weak spot is my mental game as I sometimes get angrier than I should on the course, which my dad sometimes gives me trouble for because then I ruin not only my own, but everyone else’s game when they concentrate on me being angry. In the future my goal is to become a professional golfer and play on the European Tour. After I have finished school, I dream of going to America for university and then hopefully I can start my golf career. Education first, as my parents keep reminding me!

This month we’ll look at another great drill to develop the correct body action and resultant consistent swing. As you know we’re three dimensional (3D) and we live in a 3D world. The golf swing has to be 3D as well with the movements of up/down, lateral and rotation all playing a role. The wide stance drill is a simple exercise that helps us create these movements and helps us understand that the Up and Down controls the lateral and rotation.
This great Peter Cowen signature drill can be used for all levels and age of player. For more senior players you can narrow the stance to we’re you feel comfortable to make the exercise from . It’s demonstrates that the downswing doesn’t start with a spin of the left hip but that something drives it!
You’ll notice that your upper and mid balance points have held position and haven’t fallen forward and back. This is crucial for consistency as the club is going to follow your balance.
The driving force is obviously the loaded right side that turns down which looks like the left side is leading. For more information please visit one of the Academy Professionals at The Peter Cowen Academy Dubai.

15 Rules of Golf
THE NEW RULES OF GOLF More changes explained
Following on from last month when we explained the 20 Must Know Rule changes for 2019, this month we will look to explain some of the lesser known rule changes introduced by the R&A and the USGA. 1. In the following three scenarios, you no longer need to ask your playing partners to witness your actions when lifting your ball that is in play. • To check if the ball is damaged • Lifting your ball to identify it – during a search • Lifting your ball to see if it lies in a condition where relief would be allowed However, you MUST still mark the position of the ball before lifting and you MUST have good reason to be lifting the ball – without good reason a ONE shot penalty will apply. The main reason behind this change is to entrust the integrity of the player like all other aspects of the game, to speed up play, and it was also agreed that more often than not an opponent would decline the opportunity to observe the process so why bother anyway…The penalty for lifting without good reason should be enough to prevent abuse of the rule. 2. Replacing Ball When Original Spot Not Known In a situation now when a ball is moved and must be replaced, it will ALWAYS be replaced (not dropped), regardless of whether the original lie is known or unknown. If the spot is not known, it will be ESTIMATED and the ball will be replaced as it was before
it was moved, including being under or against any growing or attached natural object. 3. Touching Line of Play on Putting Green In the new rules, there is no penalty if a player touches the line of putt. It was determined that no real advantage can be gained, and also with the introduction of repairing spike marks and other damages, it makes sense to eliminate this entirely.
Here is a reminder of the top 10 must know changes: 1. New dropping height. All drops must be from knee height. 2. New dropping procedure. Ball must land in and come to rest in relief area. 3. Time reduced for search. Ball is lost if not found within THREE minutes. 4. Putting with flagstick in. Hitting unattended flagstick in hole is now allowed when putting. 5. Spike mark repair on green. Repair of almost any damage to green now allowed. 6. Ball or ball-marker moved on green. No penalty for accidental movement of ball or ball-marker on green. 7. Ball accidentally moved while searching. Replace ball with no penalty. 8. Loose impediments in bunker or penalty area. Removal of loose impediments in bunker or penalty area now allowed. 9. Touching line of play on green. Touching line of play on green now allowed. 10. READY GOLF In stroke play, the new Rules actively encourage READY GOLF. If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply email your query to rjames@dubaigolf.com.
16 r’s Greenkeepe Cuttings
GREENKEEPER’S CUTTINGS Well, this is my first official Club Life since being back at Emirates Golf Club so I must apologise for not doing it sooner. It’s been a hectic nine months since being back at this Club after what was a great seven and half years at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. I learnt a great deal there and I feel it set me in good stead to return and to really make a difference. I have to say it’s great to be back and I want to thank everyone who has welcomed me and been so supportive, not only to me, but also to my team while we went through a little transition to how I manage and what I expect for the courses at Emirates Golf Club. Since I have been back, you may have seen the extensive work we have done on the course with the surrounds and managing the landscape areas around the course. I am very tough on the guys when it comes to detail works and the smallest thing can make a huge difference to the playability of the course and
the presentation so I hope that this has shown through a bit more. So in January it was the 30th Anniversary of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and what a great few weeks we had. I have worked and been a part of a few now, but not in this role so it was something I was looking forward to. The team work was fantastic and we went into the whole week with such a fun and enthusiastic attitude. This made it so enjoyable and the buzz around the workshop was great. The work that goes into preparation and staging this tournament is massive, with 3am start times and 9-10pm finishing times but the guys produced, what was considered by some, the best they had seen the Majlis course which is a great testament to them and what they achieved. A huge thank you needs to go to Mario Sumanga, Assistant Golf Course Superintendent who worked tirelessly with a
smile on his face and to Donal Mulvey, Fleet Manager, who had the machines and blades right where we needed them. These guys are pivotal to the operation and they did the Club proud. We are now looking forward and what is next for us is the Ladies European Tour event - the Moonlight Classic on the Faldo Course in May which we are looking forward to and we are also getting to work on some projects on the golf courses. I want to say thanks again for all the support and I hope you enjoy the rest of the great weather we have before the temperatures start to rise. Happy Golfing! lunges, and squats, that work your legs, too. Battle ropes, sometimes called heavy ropes, are one of the newest fitness trends, long used as a training tool for football players, mixed martial artists (MMA), and other athletes. Unlike the relatively static movement of lifting and lowering a barbell, using battle ropes is a dynamic, ever-changing form of movement that has the added benefit of showing you whether you’re doing the movements correctly. The ropes can be whipped, slammed, or dragged, but among the most popular are undulating movements that cause the ropes to move in waves. A typical battle rope workout might be used as part of highintensity circuit training.
It’s a little like “running with the upper body”. It’s great for core training. The abs, back, and glutes (muscles of the buttocks) are all engaged. What You Need to Know Battle rope IS a simple workout tool that virtually anyone can use, so don’t be intimidated if you’re just starting out. The ropes come in various lengths and widths, which will impact the intensity of your workout.
If you’re the parent of a golfing child, you want your child to be able to play the game they love without suffering from back pain. Back pain can be one of the most common causes of lost playing time for golfers but you don’t have to let it keep your child on the sidelines.
WHAT CAUSES BACK PAIN Golf requires twisting, turning and bodily impact that creates a lot of stress and
by teaching proper movement techniques and exercises to prevent future injuries.
Over time, muscles and tendons can become weak or inflexible due to repetitive use and sometimes, all it takes is a sudden movement, fall or collision to cause a painful back injury.
HOW UPANDRUNNING CAN HELP YOU
HOW UPANDRUNNING CAN HELP YOUR CHILD? At UPANDRUNNING, our sports clinicians are also athletes and we understand how frustrating it can be when back pain keeps your child out of the game. That’s why our goal is to help your child move better and return to the sport he or she loves as quickly and safely as possible. The longer and thicker the rope, the more force you’ll need to use to make the waves. The slack allowed in the rope will also determine intensity. The closer you move to the anchor point, the more resistance you’ll be creating.
A HIIT workout using battle ropes might involve 30 seconds of the “double-whip” and “alternating whip” movements performed as intensely as you can followed by 60 seconds of recovery. The set would be repeated eight to ten times and done two or three times a week.
• Waves — an alternating pattern with the primary direction of force toward the anchor. • Slam — an aggressive movement with the primary direction of force down toward the ground. • Whip — a symmetrical pattern with the primary direction of force toward the anchor. There are two handgrips you can choose when working with battle ropes, either overhand (handshake) or underhand (microphone). The specific exercise and results desired will dictate which is best..
Busy kids have busy parents and all the hard work you do to take the best care of your family can sometimes take a toll on your back and spine.
If you are suffering from back pain caused by everyday activities, an injury or wear and tear, there’s no reason to suffer. The clinicians at UPANDRUNNING provide expert treatment for mums and dads, too. We understand how difficult it can be for parents to find a moment to take care of themselves. That’s why we offer convenient hours and flexible scheduling, so you can get the back pain treatment you need when it fits into your family’s schedule.

pressure on the spine. These movements can also increase the risk of straining or spraining a back muscle.
When men and women engaged in this HIIT program for four weeks, they increased their VO2 max, which is the maximum amount of oxygen you can take in while exercising and is used as a measure of cardiovascular health. It was noted that battle ropes HIIT shows potential to improve both aerobic and anaerobic parameters in just four weeks time. Both the double wave and the alternating wave are beginner movements, so this is a simple and effective HIIT workout to start with if you’re new to battle ropes.
Michael Mefo Physiotherapist Here are two clear descriptions of how to perform each: • Double Wave — to start, stand facing the anchor with feet shoulder-width apart. Grasp one end of the rope in each hand so that your palms face each other. Bend knees slightly, brace your core, and move both arms up and down rapidly, creating waves in the rope. • Alternating Wave — stand facing the anchor point with feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. Grab one end of the rope in each hand so that your palms face in. Raise one arm to shoulder level and then quickly lower back to start, raising the other arm to shoulder level as you do so. Continue alternating as rapidly as possible without losing form. Give these a go and if you’re not sure, feel free to ask me at the Fit Lab.

FROM THE KITCHEN OF CHEF NICHOLAS CUOMO Carnival is a colourful, joyful party during which tasty and rich dishes are traditionally prepared. Loved by young and old, it is celebrated with masks that create a humorous and playful atmosphere.
FOOD HISTORY Carnival is a Christian celebration leading up to the period of lent and concluding on Fat Tuesday. Celebrated throughout Italy, carnival is most actively and colourfully celebrated in Venice and Viareggio. Carnival festivities have a very ancient religious origins and are probably even tied to ancient pagan rites when wizards wore masks to scare off evil spirits. However, Carnival is more commonly associated with the huge parties that used to take place in Ancient Rome between October and March in honour of the father of all the
CARNIVAL COOKIES
gods, Saturn. During these parties, called saturnali, slave-owners and slaves would switch roles and a “King of the Party” would be elected. This tradition is still carried out in some parts of Italy today. According to Livio, born in 263 AC, the festivities often lasted up to fifteen days. It is precisely this pagan tradition that was absorbed by the Christian religion, toning down the celebration. During the Middle Ages, Carnival came to be known as the “party of the crazy people,” during which time exaggeration was the name of the game. People generally ate huge meals, gearing up for Lent. Also during the Middle • Time: 1 hour and 5 minutes • Difficulty: Easy • Course: Desserts and Fruit INGREDIENTS: Per 4 servings • 7 oz Italian “00” flour or all-purpose flour • 3 tablespoons potato starch • 5 oz butter • 3 ½ oz confectioners sugar • 1 egg yolk • ½ stick vanilla
Ages, the habit of cross-dressing and putting on costumes to look like famous people took hold. The height of the Carnival celebrations took place in Florence during the Renaissance when the Medici family would organise trionfi, or huge parades and masked balls. DID YOU KNOW THAT... that Carnival of Ivrea, where the Battle of the Oranges takes place, is considered to be the oldest Carnival in the world, celebrated uninterruptedly since the Middle Ages?
PREPARATION: Begin by removing the butter from the refrigerator and letting it sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes to soften it. Sift the flour, potato starch and powdered sugar. Then add the egg yolk and butter; work the dough with your hands until it is well mixed. Before the dough gets too even add the egg yolks and then keep working until it gets smooth. Cover the dough in plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Then, remove from the refrigerator and roll out the dough using a rolling pin until about ½ inch thick. Cut out cookies from the dough and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake the cookies in a 350°F oven for 13 to 15 minutes.
Easter is an important celebration that marks the end of the season of Lent which takes place after the Carnival period.
PINZA GORIZIANA
(TRADITIONAL EASTER CAKE FROM GORIZIA)
• Time: 1 hour and 10 minutes • Difficulty: Difficult • Course: Desserts and Fruit A soft and light dessert from Italy’s Friuli region. FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA INGREDIENTS: • 2 lb all-purpose flour • ½ lb sugar • 1 cup milk • 5 oz butter • 2 eggs • 9 egg yolks • 1 ¾ oz fresh yeast • Rum to taste • citron essential oil to taste • salt to taste
CHEF’S TIPS For the best results, use an electric mixer to knead the dough.
PREPARATION: Mix together 4 cups (100 g) flour, 2 tbsp sugar, yeast and about 1/3rd of the milk. Knead until the dough is smooth and uniform, then let it rise for 30 minutes Once the dough has risen, knead it again, adding half of the remaining flour, all of the remaining sugar, half of the butter (melted and allowed to cool), 1 egg, 6 egg yolks, half of the remaining milk and a pinch of salt. Mix together until you have a soft, uniform dough and let rise for another hour. After the dough has risen a second time, add the remaining flour, 3 egg yolks, the remaining milk, the other half of the melted butter, the citron oil and a little rum. Mix together until smooth and uniform, then shape the dough into a ball. Let rise for another hour. Place the dough in a baking dish lined with parchment paper. Whisk the remaining egg and brush it onto the dough. Bake the “pinza goriziana” in a 320° F oven for 40 minutes.
FOOD HISTORY Even if desserts may seem to be a modern creation, they actually date back to ancient times: our desire for sweet flavours is a part of human nature. It is quite probable that the first desserts to be created were cakes. The ancient cakes derived from bread recipes and were made using a similar dough of flour
and water cooked in a fireplace. By adding sweet ingredients like honey, milk or fruit to this dough, it was possible to turn the bread dough into something delicious – considered to be the food of the gods. Cakes were considered almost sacred in Ancient Egypt. It is believed that pharaoh Rameses III was very fond of cakes and images of various cakes were sculpted into the walls of his tomb.

MONVISO – NEW SPONSORS We are delighted to report that MonViso water has become the latest S2B sponsor for the 2019 season. They have also committed to be a Bronze Sponsor for the Dubai Sports Council CEO Masters that will take place on March 25th 2019. Sourced from Europe’s highest spring (2,042 m), MonViso is the minimally mineralised water with one of the lowest sodium levels (0.33 mg/L), and total dissolved solids in the world. Born in the heart of Italy’s Monviso Mountain, it is pure at origin and bottled at source and its unique composition gives it health benefits that make it perfect for everyone. The brand’s CSR programme and sustainability programme donates to the Al Jalila Foundation which supports the global cause of transforming lives through medical education and research.
MonViso, will also have a presence at major events in the UAE as it continues its “Take Water. Give Life” campaign, when, for every one litre sold, MonViso will be donating AED 1 to the Al Jalila Foundation. The brand’s humanitarian and sustainability commitment is evident, as since January 2017 until January 2019, MonViso has donated the equivalent of 334,326 litres via the original donations programme designed for Dubai’s hospitality industry by MonViso and Al Jalila Foundation.
MonViso is part of Desert Warrior Challenge, RAK Terry Fox Run, Corporate Sports Championship, Hamilton Aquatics, and the Burj Al Arab Swim, promoting the “Take Water. Give Life” cause. Visitors to the MonViso stand at the events will be able to sample the Alpine Italian mineral water from Europe’s highest source with the lowest content of sodium in the world, contaminantfree purity, low-grade mineralisation and low nitrate content. On Mondays we will now be collecting AED 5 for the Al Jalila Foundation for every three-putt made in S2B plus fun ‘name and shame’ incidents on the golf course to generate fines to add to our CSR donations. Let’s see how good of a putting society we are!
