Editorial
I was hoping to feature some artist’s impressions of the Club refurbishment that is taking place this summer but unfortunately, these have not yet been finalised. However, I can tell you that this sounds like an exciting project and will entail a big lift in terms of colour and in the overall look of the clubhouse, including a members’ only area. The Spike Bar will have a sporting theme throughout, recognising the quality of players winning the Omega Dubai Desert Classic as well as other sporting stars who have visited the Club, so memorabilia and pictures will be featured throughout the bar. Exciting times ahead! I am looking forward to the changes as they sound fantastic and perhaps the addition of the members’ only area (just off M’s restaurant) will help to create a better members’ atmosphere in comfortable surroundings. Congratulations to all this season’s major title winners - all featured in this issue. Commiserations to the runners-up in these events. Competition has been tough and it has been an achievement for those who got to the final stages of the matchplays and for those who featured in the prizes in the other major events.
As we approach the end of May and practically the end of the golfing season, I do not have words enough to tell you how much I have enjoyed being Captain of Emirates Golf Club and being part of the Club in every respect. Over the last two years or so, I have got to know many of you closely, shared some valuable moments and, as part of the Members’ Consultative Committee (MCC), I have contributed to the best of my ability.

E
nd of season already - how did we get there so quickly? What a year it has been! Vipen and Maura have put every effort into this fully packed, exciting, enjoyable season. They have embraced their year as Captains, lived every minute of it, endeared themselves to everyone and, above all else, it is quite clear that they have enjoyed themselves in the process - you should both feel very proud of what you have achieved and the fun and spirit that you have brought with it. On behalf of the entire membership thank you for everything...the many hours spent at the Club and behind the scenes, the Members’ Consultative Committee meetings, as well as the various official functions and, not forgetting the Club Life write-ups (always on time and never had to hassle you for them!). Apart from all of the above, it was juggling the home, social and travelling life as well as business (for Vipen). Enjoy your ‘retirement’ from the Captaincy but I can assure you that the next season will seem very ‘empty’ initially!

ongratulations to Mike Mezei (EGC) who won this year’s Black Tee Challenge at Emirates Golf Club with a score of 143, (-1) over two rounds on the Faldo and Majlis courses. With his win, Mike topped the field of 81 golfers, with Shaun Grobler (PGA) finishing as runner-up with scores of 76, 73 (149 total), and Kooros Daneshvar (EGC) finishing in third place having shot 79, 74 (153 total) over the two days. Mike led the tournament wire-to-wire having shot 73 on the Faldo course on the Friday. However, his lead was very slender as Rohit Gupta (EGC) was hot on his heels after a 74 on what was a day of tough scoring on the Faldo. Rohit eventually won best gross honours on the day after a very impressive 74, and Ratindra Jang (EGF) won best net after a two under par 70. Day two saw more favourable conditions for play on the Majlis course. With a score of 76, Chris Cornwall (DCGYC) claimed the best gross prize for Day 2 on a scorecard playoff over the back 9 holes. Best net on the day went to Abhinava Chandra (EGC) who crafted a very fine score of net 68, 4 under par, to take the prize. There were also overall net prizes over the 36 hole tournament. After two scores of net 69 and 67 (136 total), Rubio Dario (CDEGA) claimed the winner’s prize, beating Guarav Verma (EGC) by only one stroke, Guarav having shot fantastic rounds of 70 and 67 net (137 total). In third place in the net division was Anil Shivanna (EGC) with scores of 74 and 67, totalling 141. Mike Mezei triumphed in the overall Black Tee Challenge, after a stellar second round performance in which no other competitor managed to provide a serious challenge. Mike’s 73, 70, total of 143, proved to be too good to match. Congratulations to all of the prize winners on the day, especially to Mike for his win! Congratulations to Casper Schonfeldt from The Montgomerie Golf Club who had a hole-in-one on the Faldo 8th during the Black Tee Challenge and also to Fredrik Schauman (EGC member), who had a holein-one on the Faldo 12th

Congratulations to junior golfer Rashid Al Qubaisi who was the overall winner with a fantastic score of 38 stableford points. The first runner up was Abdulla Al Marzooqi with a score of 33 points. Only one point further behind was second runner up Saleh Al Ameri with a score of 32 points. The winner of the lowest gross prize of the event was Khalid Yousuf, scoring a superb one under par score of 71.

ignesh Sangani scored a superb sixunder par net 66 to win the OMA Emirates May Monthly Medal at Emirates Golf Club. Jignesh’s score saw him also top B Division from runnerup Komal Sharma, who shot a net 70 and the third place finisher, one shot further adrift with a net 71, Avinash Pangarkar. who just beat Anil Kumar over a scorecard playoff on the back 9. A very strong field of 91 players turned out for the tournament. Leading A Division on the day was Imran Qayyum, with an excellent score of 69 net. In second place
was Cody Isles, one shot further back with 70 net claiming the runner-up spot by two strokes from Christian Klynge who shot a level par net 72 and, with the better back 9 score, just pipped Tom Luig on the scorecard playoff. With a very solid round of 4 over par, 76 gross, Tony Azoulay won the best gross prize on the day. Sekhar Reddy won C Division with a fantastic score of 68 net, 4 under par. The winner in the Men’s Stableford competition, run in conjunction with the Monthly Medal, was Jan Hooftman with a score of 40 points.

Jignesh Sangani, as the overall winner of the May Medal, also claimed 17,000 Skywards Miles courtesy of Emirates Airlines, a fantastic prize on the day! The OMA Men’s Medal series winners will again experience the fantastic JeanGeorges Dubai restaurant based at The Four Seasons Hotel at Jumeirah Beach, Jumeirah 2. The Medal winners will now be treated to a fine-dining experience courtesy of Jean-Georges Vongerichten, an acclaimed chef who has earned three Michelin stars!

There are so many people at the Club who have helped to make my year truly memorable - Golf Operations and Golf Management, Food & Beverage Department who arrange a delicious lunch every Monday, our Marshals, and Craig’s Golf Course Maintenance team, our Golf Pros, especially Alex Shedden who provided free golf clinics for the ladies, Ladies’ Locker Room girls - the list is endless. Most importantly a huge thank you to Rhys who ensures that our Monday competitions run smoothly and who is always on hand to help with any queries or rulings.
Even with high temperatures the May tournaments have continued to be well attended with the May Medal and Tournament of Champions providing great underpar scores. Special mention to Maureen Platt who has been one of our most consistent players this season and with great success in most of the Monthly Medals, she was awarded Lady Golfer of the Year. Congratulations also to the Club Matchplay winners, Jayshree Gupta - Singles, Najla Bartette and Martha Wong - Pairs and Jenny Ayres with partner Ian Scott Mixed Foursomes. Our beginners took part in their own season-ending Major, the Rosebowl Trophy. This is a nine hole stableford competition on the Faldo, which is always keenly

The Captain v Lady Captain’s Matchplay Finale was on Saturday 27th May which was was very exciting. 27 teams played and the result was very close for a long time until the last two matches were won by the Lady Captain’s Team with the final result of 14.5 12.5. A
s we meander to the end of the golfing season with the temperatures and humidity approaching the uncomfortable levels I would like to wish you all an enjoyable summer whether you are staying in Dubai or travelling overseas for a holiday. Although they have officially three months left of their reign as our Club Captains I would like to thank Vipen and Maura for a fantastic season; the nine months have flown by and it has been a pleasure to work with them. Najla Bartette and Ivan Fornazaric commence their Captaincy from 1st September and will for sure maintain the high standards set by Vipen and Maura. Note the tournament season gets back in to full swing from September with the Season Opener scheduled for Friday 6th October, so please plug this in to your diary. The Members’ Consultative Committee (MCC) has been extremely helpful and supportive from the start of the season and have facilitated my transition to the Club Manager role from November. I would like to thank Vipen, Maura, Najla, Ivan, Sanjay, Andrew, Tom, Veneet, Sulafa and Mike for their contributions to the Club this season, I have highlighted below some of the 104 initiatives they have helped to introduce this past season: • Faldo Course: Hole 13: Design changes have been implemented and a trial period commenced to ascertain if the hole is now safe as a par 5. Plan to change to a par 5 permanently, making the course a par 73 and in turn, stroke indices to be reviewed over the summer. • Future new Spike Bar designs are in progress with the vision of moving the location upstairs into the current M’s restaurant. The MCC has supported this change and more information will follow shortly. • Dress code in the Spike Bar was relaxed from 30th September: in the main Spike Bar (carpeted area and raised bar), collarless T-shirts are NOT acceptable. In the Spike Bar lobby and Spike Bar Patio round neck t-shirts are permitted. Sleeveless T-shirts (singlets) are not acceptable anywhere. • Alternatives to the house wine False Bay introduced to the beverage menu. • Higher quality driving range balls to be introduced from September on the Majlis range.
• Electric trolleys to be procured for the walking season (limited number and hire fee to apply). • Highlighted the importance of prizes for events including Monthly Medals: Jean Georges at the Four Seasons Resort are now providing prize vouchers for the Men’s Medal. • Moveable yardage markers (100, 150 and 200) indicating yardage to the pin on the Majlis course were trialed and will be a permanent fixture from October, coinciding with walking season. • Laser reflectors on pin flags to aid Bushnell use and pace of play. • Increase in Monthly Medal participation by adding a Stableford element alongside the traditional strokeplay. • Online cancelation for tournaments is now an option. • Le Classique reward vouchers conditions reviewed, now three months validity and more flexibility. • Collection of players after a walking shotgun - now individual carts will be available to prevent members waiting to be picked up. • Email HTML notification through the member zone of upcoming tournaments that are open for entry. • Stricter application of penalties for noshows or late cancellation to improve availability for members. • Stricter controls on active handicaps will be in place from next season, supported by Emirates Golf Federation. • Average winning scores in Monthly Medals displayed, dispelling the myth that very low scores are winning. Often a score of net 71 will claim a prize. • Improved member awareness of handicap responsibilities; all scores must be registered. • Golf carts modified; players cannot drive through the car park for safety reasons. • Phone charger in ladies’ locker room installed. • Identification tag for members’ golf bags in storage enhanced. • New Spike Bar patio furniture arriving 15th November. • Pace of play messages to appear on GPS screens for groups out of position on the course and falling behind group in front. • Members’ online booking confirmation to include promotions/information on events relevant to membership. • Introduction of Men’s Scratch Matchplay. • Shades for driving range; four are now in use by Academy.

During the summer it is planned to introduce an ‘adopt a green initiative’ to maintain the consistency and quality of the putting surfaces. We will shortly ask for members to volunteer to look after a specic green on either the Faldo or Majlis. For example, two members may volunteer to look after green one of the Majlis course; by doing so, every time they play the hole, they not only repair their pitch marks but any mark left by a fellow golfer. ongratulations to Bradley Mogire and Natalii Gupta who won this year’s Boys’ and Girls’ Club Championships at Emirates Golf Club. Bradley carded a very solid round of 4 over par, gross 76, with a steady 14 pars and only 4 bogeys, to lead the Boys’ Division. Natalii claimed the Girls’ Division with a fantastic score of 75 gross, 3 over par, the lowest score posted by any junior on the day!
NOODLE YOUR SWING TO IMPROVE YOUR STRIKE
The overall runner-up in the tournament was Tatyana Mogire, who blasted below her handicap to shoot a gross 76, matching her brother’s score on the Majlis course. Third place went to Hyeonji Kang who shot an impressive gross 77.
Have you recently had a lesson? Do you know what you’re working on but struggling to adapt to the certain change within your takeaway or downswing? Well, no need to worry…all you need is a NOODLE!!! One fundamental you need to apply is keeping your arms ‘connected’ to your body as you swing back and through. If you do it right, you’re making it easier to have good timing during the swing and to move the club on the correct plane. Swing plane is the vertical angle between the ground and the circle that the club head travels on during the bottom portion of the swing arc.
The best net scores on the day were very closely contested. Leading the Boys’ Net Division was Toby Waite, who carded a 73 net, 1 over par score, and Deborah Chang had the best net score in the Girls’ Division, shooting 75.

Place the ball one clubhead width in front of the NOODLE and learn to keep the clubhead in front of the NOODLE by using your shoulders and arms together on the takeaway. Avoid making contact with the NOODLE if possible; if you do make contact with the NOODLE your clubhead has come under plane. Once you have learned to keep the club in front of the NOODLE, fire away and hit a few shots with it there on the ground.

emails with schedules helped reduce no-show volunteers. As people showed up, they were checked in to the system and gaps in the schedule were immediately made visible so they could be adjusted in real time. At the women’s and men’s events, there were delays caused by fog and winds and also the tragic death of caddie Maxmilian Zechmann caused play to be suspended. This meant that shifts had to be quickly moved in the system (which took minutes to accomplish) and everyone was updated through email and the app. This is what Boyd Edmondson, said about using the system: “Using InitLive for our event was outstanding. It has taken the Volunteer Management Programme used at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic into a new dimension, with simplicity and effective functionality. The glowing distinction between the past and the InitLive tool was the ease and effectiveness of use which InitLive brought to the table. It reduced my scheduling times by 75%. The communication facility offered by InitLive was comfortably the most used feature, both on the app and on the web. The InitLive system was a massive success, due to the simplified ability the system brought to the communication and scheduling processes.” The use of InitLive at the Desert Classic was submitted to the Middle East Event Show for the “Best Use of Technology” in an event and we won! unning a golf tournament is not easy at the best of times. Managing the scheduling and communications with staff and volunteers can be very time consuming and prone to error, especially when you are using manual processes. That is why Rhys James, Chief Marshal and Boyd Edmondson, Marshal Director for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic decided to try a new tool, InitLive (www. initlive.com), to alleviate these problems. InitLive takes a mobile-first approach to managing the most mobile of tournament resources, the team on the ground. The system includes a cloud-based web-service and mobile-device app. The main objectives in using InitLive were to improve the scheduling process and simplify communications. This was achieved by creating a schedule on-line that let the staff and volunteers electronically sign a waiver, input their details, select what qualifications they had, indicate which days they were available and sign up for the respective shifts. Russ and his wife Ellen who is from Taiwan, are both members at Emirates Golf Club and they have an adorable military greyhound named Obi. This month he managed two victories on Mondays to add to the three already earned in 2017. He is leading the field by some distance re victories in 2017 as his handicap comes racing down, assisted by the S2B handicapping system; his 19 handicap in January is now 10!

imon in his own words “Used to play as a junior. Met Russell from S2B four years ago and started playing golf again. Fun competition was the biggest factor to my improvement’. Simon has moved from a 12 to a scratch handicapper over a three year period as he has harnessed his prestigious length, and enjoyed S2B victories along the way. Luke started with Emirates Golf Club in the summer of 2011 and has taken his opportunity to grow and develop his skills with us. Although never nice to say farewell to a guy who is performing as well as Luke is, it is always with a sense of pride that we see our colleagues grow within the club to further their careers at great facilities such as Manly Golf Club.

laying the wrong ball (Rule 15-3) in golf is a simple mistake but a costly error. However, the good news is that you can avoid any penalties by following the simple recommendation below.
Ultimately, it is the player’s responsibility to play the correct ball. To assist you and your playing partners, the rules of golf recommend that you put a unique identification mark on your golf ball before commencing play. Despite the above R&A recommendation, this rule is broken time and time again across fairways around the globe and a player who breaches this rule will be penalised as follows.
Match Play
• If a player makes a stroke at a wrong ball, he loses the hole. • If the wrong ball belongs to another player, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played. • If the player and opponent exchange balls during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at a wrong ball loses the hole; when this cannot be determined, the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged.
Stroke Play
• If a competitor makes a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of two strokes. • The competitor must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or by proceeding under the Rules. • If he fails to correct his mistake before making a stroke on the next teeing ground or, in the case of the last hole of the round, fails to declare his intention to correct his mistake before leaving the putting green, he is disqualified. • Strokes made by a competitor with a wrong ball do not count in his score. If the wrong ball belongs to another competitor, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played.

So, we are just about through transition on both courses and I am very happy with how things have gone this summer. We didn’t have to sprig all that much this year and the short mown areas in particular transitions without any issues at all. As is typical during our summer closures, we aerify the golf courses by means of hollow core aeration which is a disruptive yet very necessary practice. Dilution of organic matter (OM) within the profile of the golf course is what we are managing when going ahead with aeration. If this is not managed, the percentage of OM builds up in time to a point where it becomes detrimental to the health of the plant causing untold issues throughout the season. If it is not managed year on year, greens surfaces will simply become soft and root systems shallow resulting ultimately in a poor playing surface for our members and guests to enjoy. Dilution is the key word here and by creating space for application of sand we are able to replenish the profile with clean material and create channels for water and nutrition to efficiently move throughout the entire profile of the plant. It’s one part of the annual management programme and process that is likely to be the most important in our calendar and without doing a thorough job at this stage of the year, the gains that we see in our season will not be evident. RAMADAN AND THE SUMMER
W
ith the weather now heating up and Ramadan already underway, it seems appropriate to mention what is going on in the Club during the Holy Month. As many of you will have already seen and perhaps already experienced, our Ramadan tent has returned to the lawn. The Hakawi Sharqia Ramadan Tent offers an Iftar buffet, served from sunset until 9pm daily, providing elegant and comfortable surrounds for those looking to break their fast together or enjoy a delicious dinner. An a la carte Suhour menu is also served between 9pm and 3am, offering classically Arabic dishes, Ramadan mocktails and juices, coffee and shisha. A first for this year, Le Classique is offering a Ramadan inspired menu. Hand crafted by Chef Remi, it features an array of starters and main courses, followed by a sharing platter of traditional Arabic desserts. Le Classique also continues to offer its a la carte menu, well suited to those who prefer something ‘fine’ alongside their meal, which is absolutely on offer by the bottle. During the month of Ramadan, service on the Spike Bar patio is unavailable before sunset and live entertainment will resume
after Eid. Our weekend brunches however will continue in M’s and Le Classique. Last Monday’s Quiz Night in Spike saw the largest turnout of the season so far with a full bar and restaurant, which I hope will continue throughout the summer; both members’ accumulators are up to AED 10,000 each - Mahenra Parik and Yavaraj Narayan, you missed out last week! Cian will return home at the start of June to spend the summer in Ireland, where he will enjoy time with family and friends and play golf on the Irish Regional PGA Circuit.

TENNIS We hosted a great tennis event and this was the first of many to come. Some of the leading ladies in the UAE were playing in the event. Prizes were distributed by Andy Meech as chief guest and host.

Nowadays, with advances in technology making launch monitors such as Trackman or GC2 available to the masses, being custom fitted for clubs is essential for golfers of all levels. Whether you seek more distance, more accuracy or a combination of the two, properly fitted clubs can help you achieve this. The objective of custom fitting is to pair the golfer with a club that works with their swing tendencies to improve the resulting shots. Every swing is different so there is no one size fits all when it comes to new clubs. Custom fitting focuses on what you really need from a club, be it a stiffer shaft to lower your spin rate or changing the loft of the club head to change the ball trajectory. By having clubs that fit your swing it allows you to optimise ball flight, which will not only lead to distance gains,

On 15th May, at Chiesa del Carmine, a beautiful private estate in Umbria, Italy, complete with its own vine yards, olive groves, and 12th century stone chapel, our eldest daughter Natasha Daghestani married David Cook. It was a small and intimate wedding with just the immediate family and the Bride and Groom’s best group of friends. The setting we planned was an elegant country chic theme and it was a truly emotional, memorable and fun celebration. Natasha and David moved to Dubai last year and David works for Barclays Private Bank in DIFC. Congratulations to Mary Ann Gruta, Senior F&B Events Coordinator at Emirates Golf Club who got married in the Philippines on 13th May to Reno Abela. Looks like it was a wonderful day.
