A NEW SEASON IS UNDERWAY AT EMIRATES GOLF CLUB...
page 10
1 Editor: Jacqui Barry jaxdubai@gmail.com
The season is really getting underway now...the courses are looking fantastic, the weather is getting better and everything is building up to the start of the season. Although the official start of the season is 1st September, realistically, it’s more like the start of October before competitions start filling up as it’s still so hot and humid until that time. So, welcome to the unofficial start of the season and now it all kicks off!
EMIRATES GOLF CLUB SENIOR MANAGEMENT
Christopher May
Congratulations to Captains Ishu and Yana who managed their driveins with ease (possibly with a little help from the Champagne bar on the first tee!) It is a very nerve-wracking moment in front of your fellow members but both Captains were very much at ease! Yana, of course, had to go through the same thing the following Monday at the Ladies’ Season Opener but it’s a bit easier the second time round! The Season Openers went very well with many in attendance for the golf and the presentations so the season has started well and we look forward to more major events and lots of fun for the season ahead.

What a fantastic turn-out we had for the Season Opener on 4th October; well done to Ishu and Yana for finding the fairway in front of 126 fellow members, increasing the pressure of the opening drive! The Rugby World Cup is approaching the knock out stages with the quarterfinals on 19th and 20th October followed by the semi-finals on 26th and 27th. In a wide-open tournament there promises to be some intense contests so come and join us in Spike Bar or Rugby Central sponsored by DHL. On 26th October, following the Rugby semi-final, we will also be hosting a ‘Big Day Out’ from 3pm-10pm. Enjoy the cooler temperatures with activities such as Dubai Fitness Challenge, free golf lessons, food trucks, kids’ activities, live music and much more.
Last month we had the ‘Mike Gerbich Cup’ to honour our dear friend, member and Past Captain of the Club, Mike Gerbich, who passed away a few years ago. It’s great to see that this event is still well supported in Mike’s memory. Thanks to the Golf Course Maintenance crew who have worked incredibly hard over the summer to keep both our courses and the Par 3 course in great condition and it’s a pleasure to play them like this. Please assist our GCM team by repairing pitch marks on the greens (yours and others nearby). filling in divots with the sand provided and ensuring that bunkers are raked properly, leaving them in the condition you would expect to find them when playing your own shots.

Barney Coleman Club Manager Golf Course Etiquette
The Members Consultative Committee (MCC) has highlighted the poor etiquette on our golf courses. From Friday 27th September, the course marshals have been closely monitoring etiquette on both courses. If a member or guest is seen to not repair a pitch mark, fail to fill a divot with the sand provided or leave a bunker and not rake it, then they will be given a ‘yellow card’ by the marshal. The names of all members and guests who receive a yellow card will be given to me. Any player receiving a second yellow card will be subject to disciplinary action. Thank you for your assistance in improving the care of our courses. Throughout last season, the issue of unraked bunkers and pace of play was consistently fed back through the MCC forum. It is time that all members took responsibility for these areas. If you see a fellow competitor not raking a bunker then please call them up on it and make it happen. As for pace of play the marshals are best placed to know what is happening on the course so please respect them and comply with their directive when asked. At the last MCC, the topic of etiquette and pace of play was yet again discussed; it embarrasses me to say that we are seriously considering attaching ‘dash-cams’ to the marshals’ buggies. If this happens, we can improve the training of the marshals by evaluating the interactions, in addition to assessing how members and guests respond! Also it is possible to point the proposed camera towards a bunker! Watch this space and we will be sure to notify you if this step is introduced. The new menu for Spike Bar and Terrace was introduced at the start of October so please be sure to give that a try, Chef Nicholas has kept in some Spike’s favourites but he has added many new dishes for you to try.
The Carine enclosed summer terrace will be removed from either 13th or 20th October depending on humidity levels!. Omega Dubai Desert Classic 2020 The first professionals competing in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic were confirmed this past month and the field is shaping up nicely. Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau will be back to defend the Dallah trophy on our Majlis course. Joining him will be Matthew Fitzpatrick, Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood, Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Matt Wallace. Further announcements are expected in the run up to the event. The summer work schedule below has now been completed: • Extension of the Members’ Tee (far end of driving range) • Relocation of chipping green at members’ end plus the inclusion of Paspalum grass (same as Faldo greens) • Chipping green re-design (plus change to Bermuda grass, same as Majlis greens) • Majlis 6th green extension • Tee extensions on the Majlis course • Majlis Hole 7 – new bridge – still work to be carried out on this, including beautification and landscaping of the edges either side of the bridge
• Royal Majlis (8th green Majlis course) refurbishment – please note that this is a fabulous venue for private events including weddings, parties, product launches etc. We have given the building an essential uplift over the summer with a new A/C system, flooring and other improvements. Children’s outdoor play area With the success of Jones the Grocer, Spike and Carine, we are seeing an increase in the number of families visiting the property. This of course was also our intention by collaborating with JTG back in November 2017. As a result, coupled with an increase in family memberships, there are more children dining in our outlets. This can lead to an increase in volume in the restaurants as well as our under-12s looking to keep themselves active by running around or investigating the putting green! To reduce the running and noise in the outlets plus the potential damage to the putting green we are opening an outdoor play area. As you look back at the clubhouse from the Majlis course this will be located to the far left of the property. It will be concealed with trees and hedges to prevent any noise traveling to the course. Enjoy the season ahead!

OMA Emirates SEPTEMBER Medal 2019
Captain’s Message
In association with
Dear Members, I can breathe easy now as the Mixed Season Opener has just finished and I managed to hit my Captain’s Drive on the fairway!! Congratulations Dev Anand for knowing my game and for guessing the right distance. We had a great day with a welcome drink and then music, delicious food and plenty of drinks on the 12th hole. The evening dinner and prize presentation was also well attended. Lady Captain Yana, who spoke before me, covered all the points very well and
helped me ,in the process, to give a shorter speech. We had an inaugural tournament on Thursday 26th September which was the Captains’ Challenge Cup between Emirates Golf Club and the Creek Golf & Yacht Club; this went very well and we finished with a lead of 7-3. On Friday 27th we played at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club for 20 points (singles matchplay) and we managed to win eight points, so the score tied at five each and we shared the trophy in the inaugural year.

SATURDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER 2019
Dear All, After a very nice summer spent with family and friends in St Petersburg, then the south of France and rounded off with a fantastic week in Switzerland, I returned to Dubai at the end of August, just in time to get ready for the start of my very special season. Naema was equally excited as the incoming Vice-Captain as we started September with our Monday tournaments. Even with the average daily temperature about 40 degrees, we had a fantastic turnout, so well done to all the ladies who participated and again my congratulations to the winners. The Beginners’ classes started by Naema were also well attended and it’s lovely to meet with the new enthusiastic members. Each Thursday, Naema and I prepare the draw for the Monday tournaments. I understand that we all have preferences but everyone should welcome the chance to play with different ladies which is in the true spirit of our Club.
ladies were dressed in Russian colours of red, white and blue and a lot of Russian flags were waving everywhere!
September also saw a number of ladies playing in the Dubai Duty Free Seniors which was another very hot and humid but fun day. Captain Ishu arranged the inaugural challenge match against the Creek and both Naema and I were invited and helped the team to a respectable draw over the two-day tournament. We had a fantastic turnout at the Mixed Season Opener on Friday 4th October, and clearly, the Champagne bar on the first tee was a great success. Captain Ishu gave a lovely welcome speech and followed that with a pretty decent drive. So then it was my turn on the red tee box and my only thought was to hit that little white ball as quickly as possible, which I did, and of course it was not one of my best. The tournament was great and the on-course F&B was first class. Then it was on to the evening prizegiving which, as usual, was presented very well by Barney… this was followed by my first speech to all the members. I believe the feedback included “She can speak longer than Paul” to “Very well done”. Everyone was so kind and I was just relieved. This will be a day I will remember for a long time.

LADIES’ Blind PARTNERS competition
So ladies, it’s a busy month ahead, the weather will be beautiful so enjoy your time as members of our fantastic Club. And finally, if you have any real complaints then...see Cian.
The Ladies’ Season Opener was a bit earlier this year, on Monday 7th October, so a few Ladies were still ‘on long summer holidays’. I missed each of them. However, a few did manage to get back in time to play, like Maura who had just arrived back from Japan and Maribel, whose flight arrived that morning, joined us for our lunch! Unfortunately, I had another disappointing drive but it did not spoil my day one bit!! Many of the

My Reciprocal Club Experience in Japan
by Maura Duggan
Taiheiyo Club, Japan Among the 17 Courses of Taiheiyo Club’s Japan properties are some of the world’s finest championship links. Courses that not only host professional tournaments, but display a refined sense of style and beauty that is exemplary of Japanese aesthetics.
Every time I looked at the list of reciprocal clubs in Club Life I would think how lucky are we Emirates Golf Club members to have such a list of exclusive golf clubs we could play on and WHEN was I ever going to the opportunity to visit one?
PICTURESQUE MOUNTAIN RANGES AND SEASONAL SCENERY
Takarazuka course
On gently undulating terrain, the Takarazuka course has approximately 800m2 of curved green. Because each hole has a distinct personality of its own, the very memorable course is richly varied and strategically demanding. A round of its 18 holes is made additionally invigorating by the refreshing breezes of the smoothly sloping highland site.
Well the opportunity arose when planning our trip to Japan to follow Ireland in the Rugby World Cup. I asked Valance Daniel ,our Membership Administrator, for contact details for the Taiheiyo Club and he put me in touch with Joe Gaughwin, Taiheiyo Ambassador, who helped me with the booking of our two games on courses outside Tokyo and Osaka and he also helped with advice on golfing etiquette in Japan. The Taiheiyo Club own 17 golf courses all over Japan. Our first game was on their Championship course, Gotemba which is a stunning course built on the foot of Mount Fuji, a rolling parkland course with testing water hazards and beautifully maintained with Mount Fuji nearly always visible. It has hosted a World Golf Championship - World Cup and annually hosts the Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters, past winners being Seve, Greg Norman, Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke.

Featuring majestic views of Mount Fuji, a true hillside course, Gotemba is the flagship of the Taiheiyo Club family. Selected as the No. 1 course in Japan by the country’s leading golf magazine Par Golf, it’s no surprise that Gotemba is host to a range of international professional tournaments, including the Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters and the World Golf Championships EMC World Cup. Golfers around the world agree “You haven’t golfed in Japan until you’ve played Gotemba.”
Having played golf in many countries around the world, Japan offers many new experiences ; • Remote control golf carts which can accommodate four players and there is usually one caddie between four players • Glove dryers situated at the snack huts which we could certainly do with during the summer in Dubai • The one-hour lunch break after nine holes ... you are given a card with your starting time for the back nine. The club restaurants are outstanding with tempura prawns and vegetables being my favourite dish….not forgetting the fantastic Japanese beer for the boys. • The incredible hospitality of the people; during our round we met Mr Jiro Nonaka, Director of Taiheiyo Club, who is a friend of Chris May and Past Captain Rai Legnar. Jiro san invited us for drinks and presented us with a gift from the Pro Shop. Also whilst waiting for our lift back to Tokyo, Frank and Darragh started a conversation with some members who, on discovering we were Irish and visiting Japan for the Rugby World
Cup, presented us with a cheesecake each. I would like to add that this was the day before Japan beat Ireland! The second course we played which is also part of the Taiheiyo Club was Takarazuka, which is 50 minutes outside Osaka and situated high up in the hills. There are incredible elevation changes which provide the most beautiful views of the dense forest from which the course was created. This is very picturesque course and again a very high standard of course maintenance. I would strongly recommend these courses, based on our experience so if you are planning a holiday in any country where there is a reciprocal club, contact Valance for more details ........I’m searching for our next one.

We have been continuing with small project works around the course and the major one to be completed is the enlarging of the members’ chipping area. This has a Paspalum green with grass taken from the spare green we have on hole 13 on the Faldo course. The chipping area itself has been enlarged and we have removed one bunker. We hope you enjoy this improved area which should be open fully during the middle of October.
I do hope you have enjoyed using the new and improved main chipping green. The team is proud of what we have achieved during the summer months and we hope that you get some great enjoyment out of it during the season. Going forward, we are now starting our bunker softening and fixing of edges, which takes a good month to complete as the colleagues really do a thorough job on every bunker. We will add sand where it is needed and the bunkers will have a tiller go into them. Ongoing efforts with the bunkers is a priority for us as is making sure bunkers are raked
between shotgun starts so you have a fresh and soft bunker to play out of. After October there will be no carts allowed on the Majlis course for 20 days so we can aid the recovery of the rough and help us a present a great golf course for the month of November. This is always the busiest month of the year so doing this will help us a lot. The carts will then go back onto the course for the last two weeks and then we will overseed the rough on 4th and 5th of December. Happy Golfing!

THE NEW RULES OF GOLF – TOP 20 MUST KNOW CHANGES OFFICIAL AS OF JANUARY 1st 2019 31 major changes to the rules were introduced in January 2019
This article will cover the 20 Must Know Rule changes for 2019, as highlighted by the R&A and the USGA. Firstly, to help with the understanding of the rule changes, here are some newly defined terms that can be found in the ‘definitions’ section of the rule book. Embedded: When your ball is in its own pitchmark made as a result of your previous stroke and where part of the ball is below the level of the ground. General Area: The area of the course that covers all of the course except for the other four defined areas: (1) The teeing ground of the hole you are playing, (2) all penalty areas, (3) all bunkers, (4) the putting green of the hole you are playing. *previously defined as ‘Through the Green’. Penalty Area: An area from which relief with a one stroke penalty is allowed if your ball comes to rest there. There are yellow penalty areas = two relief options (previously known as a yellow water hazard) There are red penalty areas = three relief options (previously known as a red lateral water hazard) Relief Area: The area where you must drop a ball when taking relief under a rule.
20 MUST KNOW RULE CHANGES: 1. You must now drop your ball from knee height (NOT shoulder height). A simple one to understand and to do. The aim is that dropping from a lower height will result in less re-drops from the ball bouncing and rolling too far away. 2. Measure the area in which to drop your ball with the longest club in your bag (except a putter) When taking a drop, the size of the relief area will always be measured by the longest club in your bag, except your putter, whether one or two club lengths, depending on the type of relief being taken. However, you don’t need to actually use your longest club for this and then go back to your bag to get a pitching wedge, for example. If the longest club in your bag for the round is 43 inches then a club length is 43 inches for you for that round.
3. You must now drop in and play from the relief area. When taking a drop, you must always have a reference point. From there you will measure the one or two club lengths in which to drop. That radius will be your “relief area” that the ball must stay within; if it rolls out then it should be re-dropped a second time before then being placed.
4. When dropping back on the line, your ball cannot be played from nearer the hole than your chosen reference point. If taking relief by going back in line with the flag (example: penalty area or unplayable ball), you must identify a mark on that line to measure your ‘relief area’; once that mark is identified and the ball is dropped you cannot play if the ball rolls nearer the hole and out in front of your measured “relief area”. *connected to point 3 above. 5. Time to search – 3 minutes (NOT 5 minutes) Search time reduced from 5 to 3 minutes. As before, your time starts when the player, his/ her caddie, partner or partner’s caddie begins to search for it. The reason for the change is obviously to speed up play but, based on the assumption that if a ball is to be found, it will normally be found sooner rather than later. 6. If you accidentally move your ball when searching for it, replace it without penalty. A fair change to this rule that there is now NO PENALTY if you move your ball whilst searching for it. If moved, the ball should be replaced. If the spot is unknown you must estimate it, and when placing the ball try to recreate the lie of the ball as much as possible. 7. No penalty for a double hit – it only counts as one stroke. (Good news for those with the dreaded golfing yips…) 8. No penalty if your ball hits you or your equipment accidentally after a stroke. If your ball hits you, your bag, your cart (equipment) after making a stroke you must then just play the ball as it lies for your next stroke. 9. No penalty if your ball strikes the flagstick when you have chosen to leave it in the hole. You can now choose to have the flagstick left in as well as attended or removed. Your intention must be clearly stated before putting, you cannot change your intentions once the stroke has been made and the ball is in motion. 10. Spike marks and other shoe damage on the putting green can be repaired If your ball lies ON or OFF the putting green you are entitled to repair any damages such as spike marks, shoe marks, animal damage, turf plugs and seams of cut turf. The fixing and repairs must be done promptly and must not improve the line of play beyond the repair of the initial damage.
11. Accidentally move the ball on the putting green? There is no penalty and the ball is replaced. If there is any accidental movement of the ball or ball marker by yourself or anyone else then simply replace the ball or ball marker with NO PENALTY. 12. Ball marked, lifted and replaced on putting green is moved by wind to another position – replace ball on original spot. If your ball is moved by an outside agency such as wind or any other natural forces such as a slope then: If you had not marked your ball yet then play from its new position. If you had marked the ball and replaced it then replace the ball back on the same spot. 13. Penalty areas replace water hazards and you can move loose impediments, ground your club and take practice swings in penalty areas, just as you can on the fairway or in the rough. A big change that now allows us to act the same in a penalty area as we can on the fairway or rough as listed above. No longer do we need to panic about grounding the club or touching or moving anything. 14. You can’t take relief from a penalty area unless you are at least 95% certain your ball is in the penalty area. The number 95% has been introduced in line with being ‘known or virtually certain’ that your ball is in a penalty area. If there is still a small doubt, the ball is deemed as lost. 15. In bunkers you can remove loose impediments. The rules have been relaxed to allow you to remove leaves, twigs, stones or any other loose impediments in a bunker. So no longer do you need to check the back of a scorecard for the local rules to see if stones are movable obstructions in bunkers. 16. In bunkers you cannot touch the sand with your club in the area right in front of or right behind your ball, during your backswing or in taking practice swings. Despite the rules in a bunker being relaxed (as 15 above) you STILL CANNOT touch the sand with your club near the ball or make a practice swing. 17. Free relief is allowed if your ball is embedded on the fairway or in the rough (but ‘embedded’ means that part of your ball is below the level of the ground) This rule has been extended to all ‘General Areas’ that include both the fairway and the rough. This has been introduced as an embedded ball lying anywhere is not considered part of the normal challenge of playing golf.
19. You cannot have your caddie or your partner standing behind you once you begin taking your stance. Therefore no assistance can be given with a player’s alignment by anyone. The player must rely on his own skill to get this correct. 20. Pace of Play – it is recommended that you have no longer than 40 seconds to make a stroke (and usually you should be able to play quicker than that) and READY GOLF in stroke play is encouraged. The rules now emphasise a prompt pace of play. The rule reminds golfers that their pace of play will affect how long it takes others to play their rounds, both in their group and those in the groups behind.
Recommendations are: • To be more prompt in preparing for and making each stroke i.e. BE READY • To be more prompt in moving from one stroke to the next i.e. WALK FASTER • To be more prompt in moving to the next teeing ground after completing a hole i.e. CLEAR THE GREEN IMMEDIATELY When it is your turn to play: • 40 seconds is the maximum recommended time per stroke. This time begins when you are free to play without any interference or distractions
At each Club event you will be given the list of these 20 key changes as a reminder for you whilst on course; the new rule books, which I’m pleased to say have been simplified, and now include diagrams to make easier to understand are also readily available at the Club. Please don’t worry or stress about the new changes s this is a great opportunity to grasp a better understanding of the modernised rules of golf and we, at the Club, are here to help you to do that.
2019 Rules in action - Monday 23 September 2019 Webb Simpson – Kapalua (Sentry Tournament of Champions) The Rules of Golf were a hot topic as the season teed off in Hawaii for the first PGA TOUR event under the 2019 Rules. During the third round of the Sentry Tournament of Champions, Webb Simp-son became one of the first professional players to benefit from the changes around finding and identifying your ball. While searching for his ball in some heavy rough short of the fifth green, Simpson stepped on his ball, accidentally moving it in the process. Only a matter of days prior, Simpson would have incurred a one-shot penalty, however with the New Year bringing Rule 7.4 into effect, the ball was allowed to be put back to its original position and played without penalty. Rule 7 allows a player to take reasonable actions to search for their ball after each stroke and a player no longer gets a penalty if the ball is accidentally moved in trying to find or identify it (provided the ball is replaced back to its original spot). That said, players do still need to be careful
not to cause improvement to the conditions af-fecting their next stroke as a penalty will still apply if they improve their lie, stance, area of intended swing or line of play by acting excessively when searching. Stephen Gallagher also benefited from this Rule change when he also found his ball by standing on it at the Hero Indian Open at the end of March. Again, Gallagher simply replaced his ball on the es-timated spot with no penalty. He went on to win the event by one stroke. Paul Casey - Sedgefield CC (Wyndham Championship)
Under the previous Rules, if a players ball was accidentally deflect-ed or stopped by the player, he or she would have incurred a one stroke penalty, but as this was one of the changes to the 2019 Rules, Casey avoided the additional penalty and was simply re-quired to play the ball from its new position in the bunker. Under Rule 11.1, if a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits any person – including the player themselves – there is no penalty and the ball must be played as it lies. This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment.
the purpose of test-ing, there would also be a penalty if their actions in touching the sand improved the conditions affecting the stroke, i.e. the lie, area of intended stance or swing or line of play (Rule 8.1a).
One of the major rules changes for 2019 involved what a player can and cannot do when in a bunker, and when Rory McIlroy’s tee shot found a greenside bunker at the 14th hole of his second round at The Northern Trust in August, golf fans were given an insight into how the new bunker Rules are applied.
The 2019 bunker Rules underwent some significant changes, and the introduction of Rule 12.2a was a significant relaxation of the previous rule, allowing a player to remove loose impediments from a bunker and permitting any reasonable touching or movement of sand in the bunker that happens while doing so. This is the Rule which McIlroy was originally proceeding under when he went to re-move what he thought was a stone. As sand is not a loose impedi-ment, McIlroy was not specifically allowed to remove
From the R&A
During the final round of the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship in August, Paul Casey found trouble on the 10th hole when his drive ended up in a fairway bunker 150 yards short of the green. With his ball in a reasonably playable lie, Casey decided to go for the green with his next shot, but failed to get the ball elevated quickly enough, catching the face of the bunker, and causing his ball to rebound back towards him, hitting him on the leg.
Rory McIlroy – Liberty National (Northern Trust)
As he was weighing up how to play his next shot, McIlroy attempted to remove what he thought was a small stone which was close to his ball, only to realise that it was actually a clump of sand. Follow-ing some initial confusion, McIlroy was assessed the general penal-ty of two-strokes for touching the sand that he believed was a stone, but this was later corrected to no penalty.

Rules of Golf
Playing out of turn: • Is allowed in stroke play; you are now allowed to play out of turn in a SAFE and responsible way to save time…also known as Ready Golf! • In matchplay, you can play out of turn IF AGREED between both players to save time. I appreciate the above can be a lot to take in all at once, please take some time to digest just a couple of the changes at a time.
18. Unplayable ball in bunker – extra option to drop outside the bunker for TWO penalty strokes. By going back as far as you want in line with the flag outside of the bunker, but this will cost you two strokes. Previously you could only drop outside of the bunker by going back to where you played your last stroke for only a one stroke penalty, but that could have meant going back 150 yards, for example.

Under the new Rules, loose impediments such as sticks or stones may be removed in a bunker. the clump of sand that he touched, however, there is no automatic penalty for his action. The focus therefore switched to whether or not he had delib-erately touched the sand next to his ball for the purpose of testing the condition of the sand or improved the conditions affecting his stroke. Rule 12.2b states that, before making a stroke at a ball in a bunker, a player must not deliberately touch sand in the bunker with a hand, club, rake or other object to test the condition of the sand to learn information for the next stroke, with the penalty for such a breach being the General Penalty (two strokes in stroke play). In addition, even if the player had not touched the sand for
In this case, it was clear that McIlroy had not touched the sand with the intention of testing its condition, and he had not improved his lie, his area of intended stance or swing, or his line of play. It was therefore determined there had been no breach of either Rule and the two stroke that was initially applied, was cancelled and his score amended to a 68.

Set a realistic, specific goal – there is no point is going in hard on the first session back, then not being able to move for a week due to feeling sore. Set yourself a target and stick to it. The point is to do something rather than do nothing. A brisk 30 minute walk still beats anyone else at home on the couch. Find a workout buddy – working out with someone keeps you both accountable and motivated to show up. Hit the gym machines together, attend a variety of classes or sign up for a 5k run. Having each other to bounce off will keep you going to complete your goals.

Straight Leg Dumbbell Deadlift By Christopher Mallett
What is this exercise for?
This movement is great for keeping a continuous muscular time under tension for the posterior chain (muscles from upper back to legs). It works the hamstrings, glutes, lower back, mid and upper back all together in a single movement.

Why do this exercise?
Since we are constantly working against the force of gravity, by either sitting at a desk all day long, or similar, the muscles in our posterior chain (back of the body) become weaker and muscles in the anterior chain (front of the body) become shorter. This exercise can help to strengthen postural muscles as well as fire up the ones that don’t work hard enough as a result of inactivity. Having stronger glutes and hamstrings never hurt anybody. In fact weakness in these muscles have proven to cause problems elsewhere in the body.
Why use dumbbells instead of a barbell?
The barbell, while still useful, limits the range of motion you are able to achieve in your mid and upper back during this

exercise. By using the dumbbells you can get a greater squeeze at the top of the movement making it more effective.
How to perform this exercise?
Stand with feet shoulder with apart and dumbbells at your side (be sure to choose a weight that you are comfortable with). Hinge at the hip while keeping the arms straight and close to your body as you descend towards your feet. Feel the stretch in your hamstrings and glutes (chest level with hips is far enough for this

exercise but range of motion will vary depending on individual flexibility). Squeeze through the glutes still keeping the weight close to your body as you stand upright and rotate the dumbbells to a neutral position while squeezing the shoulder blades together throughout the movement but particularly at the top. Repeat for desired rep range. Still not sure? Feel free to ask me at Fit Lab and I’ll be happy to assist you.

What is Padel?
Padel is a sport which combines action with fun and social interaction. It’s a great sport for players of all ages and skills, as it is both quick and easy to pick up. Most players get the basics within the first half an hour of playing so that they can enjoy the game. Padel is not as dominated by strength, technique and serve as in tennis and therefore it is an ideal game for men, women and youngsters to compete together. An important skill is match-craft, as points are won rather by strategy than by sheer strength and power.

Six ways yoga improves your game
25% OFF LVL
As a golf enthusiast, you already know that you can enhance your game spending a lot of time on the putting green and the driving range and you probably already have. A physiotherapist will tell you, “You are what you do most”, but did you know that you can improve your game even further by practising some simple yoga postures? Not only does it assist with mental and physical conditioning, but it also gives you the tools to generate more power, speed, consistency, balance and concentration which are all fundamental components in golf performance.
25% OFF HAIR BOTOX TREATMENTS 20% OFF FULL BODY MASSAGES
1. You will reduce the risk of ‘throwing out your back’. Your core muscles are required to stabilise your spine. The intrinsic onesided repetitive motion of a golf swing requires good ‘rotational control’. 2. Yoga is about symmetry of movement
and is practised in both directions, meaning it can affect the ‘centering of your swing’. A stance that is off-centre can affect the under or over playing of your swing, and hence affect accuracy,
3. It improves balance which grounds your feet better to control those ‘one footed shots from the rough!’
4. Flexibility allows you to channel
rotation and power to hit that long drive.
5. You can do 18 holes and be up for more! Yoga uses breath as vital energy; not only does it calm your mind and improve concentration, but it also allows you to relax through the swing and ultimately conserve energy. 6. It does make you strong! The forward swing uses over 22 muscles and flowing through postures which challenge several muscle groups to work better together and support your body weight can only do positive things!

S2B VS EMG We had a great weekend in Ajman early September staying at the Fairmont Hotel and playing two rounds golf at Al Zorah Golf Club. It was an early tee off on Friday with 46 players, followed by chilling by the Fairmont pool and then heading into the Cave Bar for the presentation. It was the top 10 individual scores to count for the society battle and unfortunately we lost by two points against EMG, making it 2-1 in the series to them!!

Catherine Convery and Siobhan Kilalea completed another 300km of the Camino de Santiago and next year they will finish their walk in Santiago The Camino de Santiago known in English as the Way of Saint James among other names and is a network of pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the saint are buried. Many follow its routes as a form of spiritual path or retreat for their spiritual growth. It is also popular with hiking and cycling enthusiasts and organized tour groups. The Camino del Norte starts in Irun in Northern Spain and keeps to the coast for approximately 620 km. The route then turns inland toward Arzua on the Camino Frances where the two routes meet, about 40 km before Santiago. The Norte is one of the tougher routes with many climbs to the tops of hills and then back down to the coast again. The views and scenery are exceptional.
Catherine and Siobhan started their Camino de Santiago from the monumental pilgrim town of Le-Puy-en-Velay in Auvergne, southern France; the route runs through the volcanic hills of the Velay region and the foothills of the Pyrenees before joining the Camino Frances in Saint-Jean-Pied-dePort, on the French side of the Pyrenees mountains. So far they have completed 1200km (over a number of years!) and next year they will finish their walk in Santiago de Compostela on Siobhan’s very special birthday!
