oesn’t time fly past here? It seems that after I finish one Club Life magazine, I think I have loads of time until the next one and then I’m in a state of panic because the deadline is looming again. I guess it’s because there’s so much happening at the Club and in Dubai that time seems to pass so quickly and we always seem to be chasing our tails! Very soon we will be able to watch the Race to Dubai, the DP World Tour Championship to be held at Jumeirah Golf Estates 22nd – 25th November, the final event after 46 tournaments in 25 countries and it will be contested by the leading 60 players in the race following the season’s penultimate event, the Hong Kong Open. The total prize fund is US$8 million with US$1,333,300 going to the winner. In addition, a bonus pool of US$3,750,000 will be divided amongst the leading ten players at the conclusion of the DP World Tour Championship, the winner receiving US$1 million. This event is ‘on our doorsteps’ and one not to be missed. Following on from that we have the Omega Dubai Ladies’ Masters 5th - 8th December here at EGC. It’s always great to watch the ladies in action and see how well they play the Majlis course so come and support this event and maybe pick up a few tips along the way. I was so pleased this week to see one of the stalwarts of the club, Keith Stack, who made his first appearance at the Club or anywhere for that matter, since his stroke six moths ago. He looked fantastic and even looking younger too. He was in great form and happy to finally be back at the Club again. It was wonderful to see you Keith and here’s wishing you further improvement and hoping that we see you at the Club more often. Some of our long-serving staff members from the Club have left over the past few weeks, including Mercy from reception who had been at the Club for 17 years, Carlos from bag storage/ bag drop, and Moises from the Spike

Best wishes to you all. Last month the ladies had their annual Pink Ball Charity Golf Day with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. Money raised was through the sale of raffle tickets as well as players buying Mulligans and throws for their round. On course players were able to buy drives and par 3 tee shots on certain holes that Membership Services Manager, Kate Phillips had hit prior to the round. Approximately AED 60,000 was raised which included AED 10,000 that had been raised and donated by CBI. Photographs were taken by professional photographers, Yasmin and Simon of SyStudio, Dubai (see centre page spread www.systudiodxb.com). It was an excellent fundraiser for a very important charity. Well done to all those involved in organising it and to everyone who participated and donated. Club Captain, Moshe Kohli arrived just after lunch, suitably dressed in pink and he presented Glynis with a cake for her efforts. Nice touch Moshe!

Dear All,

The toiletries have been upgraded and have been appreciated by all those who have noticed. We have better coffee in the Spike Bar, for those who have savoured some. We are getting into November-the month of ‘No’- no slow play, no driving in the sand, no undressing or changing shoes in the car park. The courses are in great condition. The extended greens are coming into their own and are an absolute delight to play on. The bunkers are also playing better, with the slopes and the sides being worked at. We are certain to have some great golf, now that the weather is cooler.

aving got the pressure of the Captain’s drive out of the way, and in the rich traditions of the Past Captains, my golf has definitely gone south. I am still wondering if it is the green effect of the jacket. I was warned! Thank you for your great participation at the Season Opener and the other golf events in October. The month of Ownership has definitely been taken in the spirit in which it was intended.

The Diwali Scramble is a new addition to the calendar, and we would like full participation in the Festival of Lights. Diwali is celebrated across borders, states, languages, caste, colour, creed, and religion. It binds over 1.2 billion people, and we intend to add at least 120 members to that spirit on 9th November.

Lady Captain Glynis and Vice Captain Barbara worked very hard over the last month, for the Charity Golf in aid of Breast Cancer. It was a most enjoyable day I am told. They managed to collect the largest donation so far. Well done! They will soon be going around collecting towards the Staff Fund, who work tirelessly to give us the finest service for the staff who work at our great Club. An important point- KINDLY DO LOG IN, AND REFLECT YOUR SCORE AFTER EACH ROUND, EVEN GENERAL PLAY, and may your chips hold and your putts sink. Till next month, Moshe Kohli Captain

I

t’s that time of year in Dubai when the weather begins to cool and there’s so much to look forward to on the Emirates Golf Club calendar!

The Dubai Ladies’ Masters will soon be upon us, the hospitality buildings and stands are rising as we speak; it’s such a special time at the Club when we all get the opportunity to see how the game of golf should really be played and brush shoulders with many of the professionals who make up the ladies LET. It’s always a pleasure to have these ladies visiting, and certainly inspires us all! I certainly can’t wait to see and support these talented professionals. So much has already taken place in our busy schedule here at the Club. Sri Lankan Airways very kindly sponsored our October monthly medal, providing the net winner with an all expenses paid trip to take part in their annual tournament in Sri Lanka. Our outstanding winner with a net 65 was Miriam Wormser, who unfortunately was unable to attend due to previous commitments, so our runner-up, Youngja Yoon took up the baton. We look forward to hearing how she fared. Viv Caley really had a fantastic round with a gross 79, winning both the gross and net prizes, many congratulations. The Medal was followed by our Ladies’ Seniors tournament, closely contended as usual with Naima Maya victorious. Previous captains Caroline Jones and Jenny Ayres tied for second, with Jenny clinching the runners-up spot on a count back! Well done to everyone who took part on what was a very hot morning. Baruni Fashions and some of our lovely EGC members provided a fashion show at the lunch after the Seniors event, giving an insight into Fadwa Baruni’s Autumn/Winter collection. The girls all looked fabulous and a lot of fun was had by us all. EGC ladies travelled to Arabian Ranches for our first Inter-club meet of the season. Into battle we went with Yas Links and Arabian Ranches! Unfortunately , the fourth team in our league this year, Saadiyat, were unable to compete. There are ten ladies per team with only eight scores to count, leaving room for a few mistakes. I’m very happy to report that EGC were triumphant on this occasion with particularly great performances from Ashley Anderson and Jayshree Gupta. Well done to everyone! Monday 22nd October, was our ‘Pink Ball’ charity tournament, in aid of Breast Cancer Arabia! What can I say? It was a fantastic day with the Golf Club being hit by a swathe of

pink.......everything was pink, including the customised Mercedes! I really don’t know where to start with my thank yous....from the dedicated ladies who helped me with the raffle ticket sales, raising a record AED 24,515 alone, to all the sponsors, who I will list at the bottom, a big, big THANK YOU! To everyone who bought a raffle ticket, competitors who took part and gave so generously on the day and the extra lovely ladies who joined us for lunch......it wouldn’t have been the huge success that it was, without you.....THANK YOU! CBI Bank donated a spectacular crystal trophy, for us to award each year’s winners, who this year were Chris Dyball, Lorraine Logan, Jayshree Gupta and Margaret Breen. Two of the Ladies from CBI very kindly attended our lunch and presented the trophy, along with a large cash donation towards our fund. Special thanks must also go to SY Studios, a new photography venture here in Dubai, who gave up their time, capturing the day! The resulting images are truly fantastic! THANK YOU! It was a lot of fun on the course with our own Kate Phillips and Golf Professional, Bryan, giving up their time for longest drives on a few holes and on course golf shots. There was so much going on at the lunch too, with Stephanie Wilson’s guess the weight of her beautiful cake, Pandora and Lovelinks bracelets being silent auctioned to name a few. Thank you to everyone. Last but not least, thank you to Emirates Golf Club and staff for their hard work and contributions to an extremely important day in our calendar. A record amount, in excess of AED 60,000, exact figures to be confirmed, will have been raised, thanks to everyone’s efforts! I hope everyone enjoyed their Eid break, such a perfect time of the year to enjoy everything Dubai has to offer. I look forward to seeing those of you who have entered the Al Dobowi Mixed Amateur Open on 2nd and 3rd November which is always a great weekend. Lots of ladies’ tournaments coming up in November, the Monthly Medal of course and the two rounds of the Heritage Trophy on consecutive Mondays. See you all then, Glynis Hendry Lady Captain

aniel Hendry, one of our top juniors at EGC, started college in USA in August; he has sent through an update on his golf and college life. Hello everyone from Charlotte, North Carolina, where I am attending university on a golf scholarship. I am loving life over here! Being part of a great team, with great coaches, has been my ambition it seems forever which makes all the hard work and dedication to get here all the more worthwhile and enjoyable. It feels like I am really thriving under the new competition and elite level of golf required. Determined to make the team right from the start, I concentrated and practised hard all summer so that I would be ready for this next level, which really paid off, when I won the second qualifying event for the first University tournament in Minnesota! As a freshman, it can be hard to make the team, so I was delighted to get the chance to show the coaches what I could do. So far I have played all three tournaments for UNC Charlotte, and, as a freshman, I have seen myself rise to number one on the team. It couldn’t be a better start to my college golf career and it has given me great confidence to succeed. The Gopher Invitation hosted by Minnesota, was on an outstanding private course. I felt like I was struggling with scoring over the week but still managed to finish 28th out of 80 players so it was a pretty good finish for my first event. A week of strict practice and preparation before the next event at UNC Chapel Hill the following weekend took place. I was feeling good and very confident and managed to shoot rounds of 69, 73 and 71 to finish in a tie for 4th place! It was my first top 5 finish, and it felt great to know I could

compete with the very best over here and I even left a couple of shots out there! Extremely surprising and gratifying to me, was being voted ‘Golfer of the Week’, by the Atlantic 10 Conference! Academically, school life is very straightforward as a freshman. The work is not too strenuous, giving me time to concentrate on my golf and the initial business in hand of settling in to college life in a different country. Returning back to base, we were straight into qualifying for our third tournament. With not a lot of time between events, this was a 4-round qualifier, on different courses around Charlotte, such as Quail Hollow. Feeling confident after a very successful second event, I scored 68, 69, 68, 69 for a 14 under finish, to win the qualifier by 19 shots! Daufuskie Island, near Hilton Head, South Carolina, was the destination. I opened up with a poor round but followed it up with a 73 and a 74 to finish 20th securing another top 20 which was pleasing, after I struggled in the first round, finding the course very challenging for my style of golf. I am really starting to feel like I can compete and even win over here in the States. Tournaments at Duke and in California are fast approaching. The schedule is very tight this side of the season. It’s very exciting! Even though golf is great and college life is very time consuming, I still miss home and definitely miss Emirates Golf Club. The place was a second home for me and I can’t wait to return for the Christmas break. Hopefully I will see all of you when I am home and I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying all life has to offer you!

fter spending four years in a kitchen school in the south of France (Perpignan) and doing different training in the French Riviera and in Paris, I decided to further my career by going to London. So after my graduation I went straight to work in the English capital for ‘Boodles’, a gentlemen’s club on St James. During this time I won the prize of ‘Best Young Chef London Clubs’’. After two years I went to work as Chef de Partie at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, at the restaurant ‘Joel’ with Michelin star chef Joel Antunes; I then went to the ‘Avenue’ as Junior Sous Chef where I worked under Chef Mikko Kataja. After five years I came back to my roots to work in a Mediterranean restaurant near the Spanish border as a Sous Chef. I recently started at EGC and I am looking forward to working here and meeting the members.

Club News

ASK THE RULES WIZARD

Local Rule

Please be reminded of the following local rule for the Majlis course. As you will be aware the greens were extended over the summer to bring them back to the original size. The current local rule for this is:

Have you seen this notice? If so where is it located at EGC? (Turn to page 19 for Answer)

‘All green extensions are playable and are to be treated as through the green (i.e. green collars NOT the putting surface)’. However please note that the extension work was carried out over a four-month period. Therefore green 1 is more established than green 16 for example. Moving forward if the green extension is visibly cut to the same height as the green then treat it as the green. If your ball is on an ‘extension’ that clearly has longer grass than the green treat the area as fringe. If in doubt assume your ball is off the green. Barney Coleman Golf Services Manager

Tri-Nations T

he annual Tri-Nations tournament took place on October 20th which was a matchplay competition between, England, Ireland and Scotland which was started over 20 years ago. Originally only England and Ireland were involved in what was called the Challenge Match, but a few years after its inception, Scotland were invited to become part of it and that was the start of the Tri-Nations.

RECIPE FROM CHEF BENOIT CART Quenelles of hammour for 10 Pax

Yes It’s On Your Golf Cart.

The majority of members and visitors still drive on the sand, your help in changing this common etiquette breach would be highly appreciated

For the panade 400 ml milk 100g butter 200g flour, sifted 4 egg yolks Salt, to taste For the fish 1 kg Hammour fish (or other mild white fish), cut into rough 1” cubes 100g butter 5 eggs 1 ½ cup liquid cream Fine sea salt & fresh ground pepper, to taste Espelette pepper (or cayenne) To finish 1 quart lobster bisque or fish soup Make the panade 1. Two days before serving, make the panade. In a large, wide saucepan, bring the milk and butter to a boil over medium heat with a generous pinch of salt. 2. Add flour all at once. Stir it with a wooden spoon or heat resistant spatula. Place the pan back over the heat and cook, stirring constantly, to “dry out” the mixture. 3. Remove the pan from the heat and keep stirring occasionally to let it cool a bit, beat in the egg yolks one by one. Make the quenelle mixture 4. Make sure all your ingredients are quite cold, except for the butter, which should be room temperature and pliable. Drop the fish through, once or twice. 5. At medium-low speed, beat the panade, one quartersized chunk at a time, into the fish. Then add the butter, also in chunks. When it’s all in, everything should look like a rough paste, sticking a bit to the bowl, and kind of holding peaks. Now add the eggs, one at a time and salt, pepper and cayenne chili.

Winter Glow The cooler climate means less moisture in the environment, leaving skin feeling dry and dull, and with the holiday season just around the corner it’s time for a little TLC. Try our Elemis Visible Brilliance facial, to rescue stressed and slackened skin – it will leave your skin looking plump, even toned and radiant. Elemis Visible Brilliance 90min / AED 580

Forming and poaching the quenelles 6. Form the quenelle 7. Get a large pot of water simmering hot, poach them for about 6-7 minutes, Remove them with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towel. Finish and serve 8. Preheat oven to 365 F and bring the lobster bisque to a simmer. Roll the quenelles in the lobster bisque and place in a gratin dish. Surround the quenelles with the hot bisque. Bake for 10 minutes, until the quenelles have puffed up and absorbed some of that delicious, delicious bisque, and just started to lightly brown on top.

fter a successful summer renovation programme and the installation of the new irrigation system on the Majlis, we are excited about the season ahead. The greens extensions on the Majlis are coming along nicely; however, we have to manage everyone’s expectations and realise that they will be out of sync with the rest of the greens until they have had time to settle in and firm up. The winter months ahead will dictate to a degree just how long this process will take becasue the Bermuda will start to shut down as temperatures fall. The irrigation system is up and running superbly and you will certainly notice some additional run on the fairways as we fine tune the system. We now have exceptional control of how much water we are able to put down and in exactly what areas this is required, or not. The installation was completed within the allocated budget and within the timeframe provided, a testament to all parties involved from the consultant to the contractor. As you are aware, we have made the decision not to overseed the Majlis Course until after the Omega Dubai Ladies’ Masters. This will be the first year since 2006 that we have prepared a Bermuda Grass Golf Course for the ladies to play on. In 2006 this happened at the end of September but this year it is in December so it will be a lot cooler for the Bermuda to manage. We have some sound practices in place to ensure the course is presented really well. How will this affect our day to day play? It won’t at all. You simply won’t see the stripped up fairways and lush green-looking rough like you do when we overseed.

It will positively affect all golfers in that we will have no closures leading up to the event and the surfaces will remain pure throughout the tournament. We will keep the golf course closed for four days after the Omega Dubai Ladies’ Masters to complete our overseeding programme in this time slot. The downtime has been minimised dramatically. We will have six weeks to mature the seed prior to the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, so a nice challenge for the team and for me this coming winter! I trust you are enjoying the golf courses at this time of year when, simply put, the weather is perfect for golf! Look out for my staff who are proudly wearing their new uniform and if I may say so myself, they are looking really sharp!! Good golfing Craig
