This sector become a really crucial parts in Mkokotoni area, They don’t have a proper infrastructure and facilities that provide them for their daily basi c. The road condition is in a very good condition, however there is n’t any street light to guide them in the evening. This also related to limited energy resources for the area which becomes a really im portant issue. As a village that will expand to become a city or reginoal centre they also have to provide the area with intergrated sewage systems and drainage from road. This can cause problem in health factor for people who lives in Mkokotoni, That’s why this issues will be the most critical issue that occured until today.
INFR AS T R U C TU R E S
Street light, sewage systems, pedestrian way
In Mkokotoni all of the house is one storey house with pitched roof, some of them use corrogated iron roof of thatch roof. Average size of the house is around 80m2 with 5-6 peoples live in the house. The house growing rapidly fast and uncontrolled, they grow organically without framework to guide how and where to build. There are also a lot of unfinis hed house around the housing area, it is because they still saving their money to continue built their house. Water supply for houses and electricity become a significantly important issue for the peoples, on another ha nd their housing area is very close to their workplace where some of them are fishermens and farmers.
HOUS ING C O N DI TI O N UNCONTROLLED ORGANIC DEVELOPMENT
Providing healthcare facilities in Mkokotoni becomes one of the main objectives for the government, with their plan to make Mkokotoni as a regional centre they have to provide hospital with qualified doctors and nurses. Nowadays, they still relying on traditional medical methods from conventional healthcare. In Mkokotoni there is only one healthcare, if they have a serious illness they have to go to Kivunge the village on the north of Mkokotoni. In different case if they need intensive care they have to travel south to Zanzibar City to get the treatment. When Mkokotoni becomes a regional centre without proper healthcare it will be catastrohpic scenario.

Energy problems is not only occured in Mkokotoni but the entire island of Zanzibar, they still have to rely on the mainland or Tanzania for the power sources. This system isn’t very efficient and it isn’t environmental friendly. The aim is to create a independent self-powered city, therefore this will become a big step for the Zanzibar and specially for Mkokotoni. How to applied the self-provide energy resources and how to stimulate the locals to become a part of the process and development. The problem is not only electricity but also water supply where they already facing with erosi on and salt-water intrusion on the land. Recyling and reusing the water will become one of the key chalange.
ENERGY SYSTEMS & WATER LIMITED ELECTRICITY POWER & WATER SUPPLY
Mkokotoni is very famous for it’s fishing industry, most of the population there work as a fishermen. The methods of fishing is stil very conventional such as using nets or rods and with their traditional boat called the dhow. The old methods become positi ve yet negative im pact for their job, with new methods and technology they can catch more fis h with less time. The agriculture land is very fertile but with limited resources and manpower they can’t plant variety of type of vegetables or fruits moreover, they don’t have the skills and knowledge to do different type of crops. Besides working as a fishermen they also have their land to grow crops, some of them consumed it for their fami ly the others just sell it.
AG R IC U LT UR E & F I S H IN G IN DU S TRY LIMITED RESOURCES, METHODS & MANPOWER
Education play an im portant role of the society or a neighbourhood, same what will happened in Mkokotoni. Right now they have one prim ary school located next to the ex-magisterate building. There is also vocational training centre on the edge of Mkokotoni area where they teach youth in hospitality, arts and engineering. But the problem is they dont have secondary school which is really im portant for the children to attend after they finished their prim ary school. The condition of the existing school is very concerning, they don’ t have tables and chairs to sit on and it’s located in inappropriate area considering their health and safety.

WHAT IS THE SIMILARITY WITH MKOKOTONI ? •
•
They are located in quite similar climate. Lack of basic infrastructures such as sewage systems, and clean water. Need more improvement in human resources quality. Improvement of education facilities and healtcare. No alternative energy supply systems. Agriculture quality improvement.
WHAT DO YOU LEARN FROM THIS 3 PRECEDENTS ? • • • •
Understanding the basic needs and key issues in each area with their own characteristics. The importance of enhancing local empowerment to build resilient and sutainable systems. Participation of local peoples is the key issues which need to be address. Educating locals in order to develop their skills.
WHICH ONE IS RELEVANT FOR MKOKOTONI ?
WHICH ONE IS NOT WORKING IN MKOKOTONI CONTEXT ? WHY ?
All of those 4 energy systems is relevant in case of Mkokotoni location and topography. However, in term of funding or financial aspect it is obvious some of the systems will be more expensive. Such as wind energy and tidal energy. The most relevant is the biomass energy which they can easily apply it for their personal use at their home. Nowadays they are developing and train people to produce and fix solar panel in order to implement this systems as their alternative energy systems.
All of this 4 types will work in Mkokotoni, however there are one or two systems may take longer time to be implemented.

ANALYSING NEIGHBOURHOOD UNDERS T ANDING HOW T HE NEIGHBOURHOOD WORK
Urban space exist because there are an evolution or growing process from one point as a sing le domestic space to numbers of it that create a neighbourhood. Neighbourhood is an interdependent elements, several neighbourhoods will create a ne w civic space that can accomodate the needs of each neighbourhood. Every neighbourhood will serve as a support systems for another neighbourhood, this will create a strong network between them and will become a foundation for the development in the future. To help the area grow in the future there are three concept of spaces that need to be emphasized while developing a visions for some particular area, which are: • • •
Domestic Space; Neighbourhood Space, and; Civic Space.
‘Unless we are guided by a conscious vision of the kind of future we want, we will be guided by an unconscious vision of the kind of present we already have’ The Edge (19 9 5 )
‘The village would be a balanced community for people of all ages and incomes, where people can live, work and enjoy a vibrant community life, the majority without the need to commute and where everyone could feel a sense of personal belonging. It would provide affordable housing, work opportunities, food production, energy and water conservation as well as self-reliance for its residents in an ecologically aware and sensitive way’. The existing condition for education facilities in Mkokotoni can be described as fair. The village has primary school and a vocational training centre. The primary school is situated near the immigration office and police station. The condition of the school is under-previleged condition. As per observation, there are no benches in classrooms for children to sit. According to survey it can be seen that the ratio of teachers to pupil is also less. The Vocational training centre is recently developed and is under observation of the director of north Unguja. The centre is well equiped promoting local arts, teaching HOSPITALITY to the locals to use those skills FOR THEIR CARRERS. Mkokotoni is not having any secondary school. For further education, children travel 10 kms to get to to the Kengwa secondary school.

UNFINISHED HOUSE & MUD HOUSE BRICK HOUSE OTHERS The existing housing condition for Mkokotoni varies. Because of introduction to contemporary technologies many houses of bricks are coming. The existing 75% houses are built by locals in the village. Materials used are Mud, Thatch etc. These houses needs an attention as during rainy season the condition becomes critical. The Brick houses are recently constructed and are well in condition. The roofing material used is metal sheets. Some of the unfinished houoses are having concrete blocks also. Rest of the unfinished houses are bricks. Main reason behiund unfinished house is lack of material or labour. The houses are generally occupying 5-6 people in them. The area of house is not sufficient according to the rules but because they were constructed on their own, people adjust in them. Most of the houses are single storey houses with a sitting space provided at the entrace which acts as a informal welcoming area.

Informal open spaces are created in Mkokotoni which ca n be observed while going around the vVillage. Because of indefinite growth of the village these spaces are created which are generally used for recreational activities. The spaces between two or more houses is generally used for informal conversations and communication between the householders. Mkokotoni in present condition has two big open grounds which are used for playing football by villagers. The sand-pit shown in Fig (2) is an informal practicing area for the sports activites. Local villagers practice jumping in the pit and they also have developed a gymnasium near the pit. Open spaces play an important role in african culture and climate also. As having hot and humid climate open spaces are key element in the village.

There is a place provided in Mkokotoni for docking the shi ps and unloadning them. An informal port has been created by locals near the magestric court area. Sailers use this port according to the tidal conditions. When its high tide, they leave their boats near ramp. When it goes to low tide, automatically the boat gets anchored and then they undock the ship.

The government is trying to develope the port area as they feel it is not sufficient and efficient. The presesnt condition of the dock is not very good as it is also surrounded by mangroves. Also due to neglegence people have converted the nearby area of port into dumping ground. Technically Mkokotoni has wide shore, but the current dock is not efficient in accorda nce with the shore and the use.

The overall composition of the design is a triangular A-Frame section, with the classrooms located on the second tier. They are partially enclosed with adjustable louvered slats. The classrooms are surrounded by public green space, there is a playground below, and the roof contains an additional open air classroom. NLE has also employed strategies to make the floating architecture sustainable by applying PV cells to the roof and incorporating a rainwater catchment system. The structure is also naturally ventilated and aerated. SOURCE FROM: ARCHDAILY WEBSITE http://www.archdaily.com/344047/makoko-floating-school-nle-architects/

The unique relationship between the building and its unique immediate and wider environments allowed speculation towards architecture(s) that are both lyrical and relevent in their response to the changing cultural and social environments.

REFLECTION ON STUDIO WORK S T UDIO
SUPPOR T
S Y S T EMS
| Final Portfolio |
REFLECTION ON ZANZIBAR PROJECT FIRST LY IT IS REALLY A RARE AND EXCITING PROJECT TO WORK ON , ESPECIALLY IT IS IN AFRICAN COUNTRY. CHALLANGED BY WORKING RE MOTELY IS A REALLY IMPORTANT EXPERIENCE FOR BOTH ARCHITECT OR URBAN DE SIGNER. AFTER WORKING ON THIS PROJECT FOR 2 SEMESTER S I REALIZE THERE IS STILL A LOT OF GAP OR MISSING LINK TO FILL IN INTO MY PROJECTS, FROM THE INITIAL RESEARCH TO THE REGIONAL VISION OF MKOKO TONI AND THE INDIVIDUAL PROJECT. IN THIS CASE THIS PROJECT CAN BE EX TENDED TO MORE DETAI L PROPOSITION AND DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE SITES OR CHALLANGES. HOWEVER IN 2 SEMESTER S WORK IT HAS BEEN A LEARNING PROCESS HOW TO ENGAGE THE PROJECT WITH SUCH AN ISSUES LIKE IN ZANZIBAR. ON THE OTHER HAND IT IS SO UNFORTUNATE
I CAN’T
WORK ON THE DE TAILS FOR MKOKOTONI AREA, HOPEFULLY THE STRATEGIC VISION CAN BE A STARTING POINT FOR DR.MUHAMMAD JUMA AND HIS COLLEAGUE TO PROCEED THEIR VISION FOR MKOKOTONI THE FUTURE REGIONAL CENTRE OF NORTH UNGUJA.
REFLECTION ON STUDIO SUPPORT SYSTEMS THIS YEAR THE STUDIO SYSTEMS OR ARRANGEMENT IS SO MUCH DIFFERENT WITH LAST YEAR IN SHEFFIELD SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, EVENTHOUGH IT IS SEEMS TO BE UNUSUAL AT FIRST BUT I THINK THIS IS ONE OF NEW TECHNIQUE FOR THE STUDENTS TO LEARN NEW THINGS. BY INTEGRATING MArch AND PGT IN ONE STUDIO MAKE US UNDERSTAND AND LOOK INTO THE PROJECT FROM TWO DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. THE DOWNSIDE IS WE CAN’T ACCOMPLISHED A DE TAILED PROJECT, HOWEVER IT IS SUCH A LEARNING EXPERIENCE TO WORK IN A GROUP WH ICH IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE PRACTICE OF ARCHITECTURE OR URBAN DESIGN. THERE ARE ALSO A DOWNSIDE OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DIFFERENT SCALE OF PROJECT WH ICH I NEED TO LEARN MORE TO ACCOMODATE AND TO DEAL WITH THIS CIRCUMSTANCE S. IN MKOKOTONI GROUP I FOUND OUT THAT IT IS REALLY CONDUSIVE AND WE ARE ALL REALLY HELPFUL TO EACH OTHER. IN TERM OF URBAN DE SIGN WORK, I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO LEARN STRATEGIC DESIGN FOR AN URBAN PROJECT, IT IS SEEMS TO ME MY WORK IS LOOKS MORE LIKE URBAN PLANNING RATHER THAN URBAN DESIGN. HOWEVER FROM THIS POINT OF VIEW I UNDERSTAND WHAT TO DO NEXT IN TERM OF DETAILING THE PROJECT EVENTHOUGH I COULDN’T DO IT FOR MY PORTFOLIO CONSIDERING THE LIMITED TIME. IN CONCLUSION, I AM REALLY SATISFIED WITH THE ENTIRE YEAR I SPENT WORKING IN THIS PROJECT AND STUDIO.
