CITY IN FLUX

TwoCities

A Tale of

An animated adaptation of the cities. Javairia Farrukh, a young student one day decided to venture into unknown cities relying on her intuition for directions...ok not really she relied on her friends company for that. Having no inspiration pouring in her brains she decided to journey the unknown cities in search of it and a wise decision that was as they both provided an insight Javairia was not expecting. In the bustling city of Leeds she came across unusual behaviour surrounding the cities which later became the stepping stone for the creation of this animation. She said that, ‘Whilst on my quest to explore the wonders of the cities I came

to the realisation that both cities that I had taken into account for my research were being done so with a fresh eye. That is so because I had never been to Leeds before this and I had never focused my attention on Huddersfield either. What if I use those first impressions to take my development further. My initial thought was to use animation to convey my feelings towards the two contrasting environments.’ After going through a rollercoaster of ideas Javairia finally decided to animate the essence of both the cities using their distinctive architectures. Huddersfield came across as this lazy safe town while Leeds was the busy active city.

PULLTAB Flipbook The Pulltabe Flipbook is an innovative new design by Javairia Farrukh. The concept was inspired by Zim&Zou and Amanda Bruel who rely on physicality to create their products. Javairia fell in love with this style of work ethics and quickly decided to apply it to her own work to accompany her previous animation for City in Flux. The idea came from a flipbook which was simple but 3D flipbook which made use of negative space and secret ‘compartments’ that gradually reveal as you flip through the books. These and several others of it’s kind were published by a Japanese Creative agency, Mou Hitotsu no Kenkyujo which inspired the idea of creating a sort of innovative flipbook but with a slight twist.

Originally, she wanted to create a sort of 3D pop-up book using Mou Hitotsu no Kenkyujo as the inspiration behind the 3D element, however, during countless trial and errors she soon found success in a peculiar

Never limit yourself experiment which led to the invention of the Pulltab Flipbook. That was and still is Javairia’s moto in life. She believed limitations to be the end which created a full stop in creativity. If imagination needs to be constricted then so does the innovation that leads to the development of a city.

Kinetic Typography is the technical term for moving text and is known to be one of the most expressive ways to get a message across. Having it’s own platform in the animation industry it has done well through title I leaned more towards the natural sequences for animation, such world as we currently know it as, archer and films like Captain and focused on the objects that America: The Winter Soldier. we take so much for granted that it doesn’t even cross our minds Being an expressive platform as we lead towards progression. is why I decided to use it as an As beneficial as progression accompanist to my product to has led in terms of innovative convey the severity of where design and a simpler, easier the world is taking us. Hologram The bleak future

MAKING OF This hologram is the literal interpretation of the future. The reason I chose to create a hologram for my Earth Artifacts project is because of the trigger word ‘artifact’. This word immediately made me think of time-capsules and boxes like the cliché one’s you see on highschool tv series, however, I had a thought about time-capsules. I believe that physical objects eventually disintegrate and also seeing how fast technology is advancing in terms of smart phones, tvs and how screens how infiltrated this world and holography has started becoming more and more

realistic I think that in the future holography will takeover all sorts of social platforms and could even become a part of domestic household. This is why I decided that hologram would be the best way to let the unknown know of our untold story of ignorance and how the Earth could possibly become lifeless like Mars due to it in the future. I used the objects tree, bottle of water and a rotten fruit because they are all linked with one thing, nature. The reason I placed them in the hologram was to convey how nature is being destroyed but we remain ignorant and could

care less about the alarming shortage of natural sustenance, busy with our everyday life and selfishly fulfilling our needs disregarding the effects it has on our diminishing environment. We take nature for granted as we lead towards progression. As beneficial as progression has led in terms of a comfortable lifestyle, it has also managed to make us forget about the things we once valued creating an artificial version of it. With the invention of artificial mass production of food due to the needs of customers being greater than supply of natural products, as helpful as it is for the economy has led to one flaw which is the obstruction of wildlife and natural, organic objects, like fruit and even water. As unnoticeable as this is now since our needs are provided on a manufactured plate many humanitarian organisations have warned of how corporations are taking over organically rich land which could lead to extinction of naturally pure sustenance and eventually lead to the Earth becoming an artifact with no life, unless we begin to take action.

Modernism

Modernism to me is described as a law abiding design style which follows form and functions , such as, grids. It is a systematic style of design which encourages standardisation. Bauhaus and Swiss design is the pioneer of modernism in the world of design. Saul Bass was a graphic designer and filmmaker known best for his design design of film posters and titles sequences. He has worked for some of Hollywood’s greatest filmmakers,

including Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Otto Preminger and many more. He is known for creating the title sequnce for Alfred Hitchcock’s movie Psycho. Paul Rand, an American art director and graphic designer, best known for his corporate logo designs, including IBM, UPS, Enron, Morningstar, Inc. He is one of the most influential designers. He was one of the first American commercial artists to embrace and practice the Swiss Style of graphic design.

Born in Nara, Japan in 1930, Ikko Tanaka created a style of graphic design that fused modernism principles and aesthetics with the Japanese tradition. As a child he studied art and as a young adult he was involved in modern drama and theatrical study groups. In 1963 he formed Tanaka Design Studio where he worked for corporations such as Mazda, Hanae Mori, Issey Miyake and the International Garden and Greenery Exhibition.

Stickler to the rules

Rule breakers

Postmodernism is the polar opposite of modernism as modernism follows form and function while postmodernism rebelliously rejects it and focuses more on expressionism than structure. The Dada Movement is quite popularly known as postmodern. Stefan Sagmeister is a New York-based graphic designer and typographer. Sagmeister co-founded a design firm called Sameister & Walsh Inc. with Jessica Walsh in New York City. He has Designed album covers for Lou Reed, OK Go,

The Rolling Stones, David Byrne, Aerosmith and Pat Metheny. David Carson is an American Graphic Designer who revolutionised design. He is best known for his innovative magazine design and use of experimental typography. He was the art director for the magazine ‘Ray Gun’ and was one of the most influential designers of the ninties. Kyle Cooper is a postmodern paradox. He is an iconclast who loves what he transgresses, whether the tenets of modernist

typography, the idea of apple-pie America or even the belief in an all-loving, all-powerful God. Most famously known for his titles sequences, such as, Se7en and Spiderman.
