Is it good to whiten your teeth using charcoal?

Beauty magazines are always talking about the latest tricks for whitening teeth and the latest suggestion that is doing the rounds is using charcoal. So what’s the theory behind this? Well, charcoal is porous just like a sponge and the small holes in the charcoal absorb toxins and organic molecules. There are organic molecules in substances such as tea, coffee and red wine and these include tannins. Tannins are well known for staining teeth so the theory is that by using charcoal, the tannins will be absorbed, leaving your teeth whiter. Is it safe? Using charcoal is perfectly safe on your teeth because it is a softer material than enamel so it won’t cause any scratches or damage. On the gums however it’s not quite so gentle. The gritty nature of charcoal can irritate the gums and may cause them to recede if you brush with it. Generally people who are currently trying charcoal rinse their mouth with it rather than brush and this is completely safe. But does it work? The jury is still out on this one. There hasn’t been enough scientific research to endorse it yet. There are varying accounts on the internet about how successful it is and the only thing we can be confident about is that it’s certainly no replacement for the tried and

tested methods of teeth whitening that are practised by professional dentists. We’re keeping an open mind on this but if you are looking for teeth whitening that is safe, scientifically proven to work and will definitely make a difference then please get in touch and arrange an appointment.
