A COLOSSAL INSIGNIFICANCE

VM / INSTORE

Immersed within the enormity of the overpowering wilderness, we are subconsciously consumed by the decorated prospect of insignificance.

A COLOSSAL INSIGNIFICANCE

The towering walls and dense woodlands stage a subtle reference to the crisis of our modern day society. The immense scale and depth of the overpowering foliage prompts the realisation of our insignificance in comparison. The pure nature of the trend can directly be related to eco issues while artists such as Ai Wei Wei are similarly protesting through the proportion element with the refugee life jackets smothering the Berlin landmark. This trend has already been adopted by both retail brands including Anthropologie and Replay and restaurants including Hans Im Gl端ck which boasts an indoor forest of scattered silver birch trees.

GENERATIONAL REMINISCENCE

PRINT & GRAPHIC

Once upon a glance a refreshed sense of childlike wonder is evoked through the innocence injected into the streetwear silhouettes.

GENERATIONAL REMINISCENCE A whole new kind of 90’s nostalgia; From Bobby Abley to Jeremy Schott; Bringing out the inner child seems to be the way forward for the high fashion brands. using stills from our favourite Disney films Abley embellishes sweatshirts and T-Shirts, Printing characters from the classics onto garment. Using ‘Ariel and friends’ as inspiration, the pop culture collection ignites a strange yet welcomed sense of childlike wonder for our disney-filled upbringing. From Ursula’s snarl to Sebastian’s Grin the collection really does bring the 1989 classic to life with bright and vibrant colours, unusual cuts and that all so popular Scuba material, a trend since AW15. This emerging graphic trend is led by japanese and koreon influences from directional editorials and streetstyle.

TREND FUTURE Cartoon aesthetics, playful backdrops and vibrant colours will give future brands that Kitsch touch they all so love. Artists already innovating the next step of the trend include the likes of Portis Wasp whom has already recently been recognised and comishoned by the likes of VOGUE for his vibrant disney inspired collages.

FIRST BASE Contour leotards, tailored volume shorts, LBD jumpsuits and asymmetrical tennis skirts signify the evolution of activewear from comfort to confidence. A feminist element is subtly infused evoking the provocative detailing of the trend prompting the empowerment of women and the ownership of one’s body. The emergence of luxe in

the activewear market welcomes bespoke executions focusing on the sculpt and shape on the female silhouette. Brands such as Free People and Nu Body are driving this trend in their process of combining lingerie and activewear credentials thus thrusting the trend into a transitional phase whereby the subtrend #alldayactive becomes significant.

UNKNOWN BRAND

The label which was named following a young and drunken absurd attempt to tackle the on-going crisis of water conservation.

ABOUT

The South Korean brand founded in 2009 has garnered critical acclaim regarding the innovation embedded into its quirky conversationals. DBSW designs its collections with the ideology injected that they are to be used a social lubricant, prompting the conversation surrounding the graphic fuelled garments . For SS16, initial inspirations stemmed from the cutting and folding of paper and playing around with stationary, resulting in the titling of Paper Craft. The collection references DBSW’s realisation of the significance of paper within our daily lives through both the whimsical visuals and the innovative origami folding of the Paper Craft cap, while typography is considered and playfully infused in relation to the theme at hand.

APPLICATION A COLOSSAL INSIGNIFICANCE: DBSW uses the same methods of A Colossal Insignificance regarding the application of cultural issues. The naming of the brand subconsciously sparks a conversation around a world-felt issue but does so in a way that consumers are more likely to find interest - in this case through the fashion industry, prompting people to think of this issue whenever this brand is mentioned. FIRST BASE: Already using arguably provocative imagery within their latest editorial, DBSW has recently started delving into all elements of the First Base trend, sporting an origami hat as one of their ‘most innovative creations to date” thus driving the same exploration into the sculpt and shape of the product.

GENERATIONAL REMINISCENCE: Regarding the example of the Minion revolution innovated by the media and further adopted by the fashion industry, DBSW contributes to the process of infusing popularity into either the unknown or the ignored through their quirky name detailing their absurd attempt to tackle water conservation. The aesthetic of the trend is also being infused regarding the street wear silhouettes and the injection of their native Korean’s iconic application of 90’s cartoon.
