A s a n u p c y c l i n g c e n t e r, t h e b u i l d i n g u n d o u b t i n g l y h a s a re s p o n s i b i l i t y t o showcase the potentials of upcycling building materials.

The materials used are primarily reused materials from surrounding urban context and otherwise sourced from other industrial sites in the area. As many old industrial buildings are being demolished or striped, esulting in an abundance of local material. Bricks are the primary material used in the area. The material from the building that is cut out from the center of the site is reused to build an addition onto the heritage/shop building as the cafÊ, defining the corner towards the street. The building that houses the exhibition space is also partly de-constructed and then rebuilt in order to be raised from the street and open up for permeability. Both buildings use recycled windows from old buildings in their large glazed façades. The spiral has a base of concrete made with fly ash, one of biggest categories of waste in Australia. By using this in the structure we take a small step towards using all kinds of waste in our built environment. The railing is made from iron sheets sourced from old machinery. The roof and translucent wall uses corrugated polycarbonate and corrugated metal, sourced from industrial roofs. The spiral runs along the buildings, using their supporting walls as its structure. The smaller spiral runs at an inclination lower that 1:15 at all times and the central one at less than 1:20 with resting planes in front of all entrances for facilitated transport of goods. The buildings keep their original structure and columns. The circular cut leaves a large part of any supporting walls in the structure.

George Street: The spiral creates an eye-catching addition to the streetscape. The transparency into the different parts of the factory makes the street more pedestrian-friendly and invites curiosity of the function of the site. The streetscape gains a more human scale through new openings that break down the scale and make the street lighter, more interesting and friendlier, promoting pedestrian activity and interest in the functions.

WATERLOO WASTELAND

34

Bourke Street: An inviting main entrance into the site that shapes the street and leads into a sheltered public space where focus lands on the movement in the buildings rather than on the large street. The street gets a resting zone and the transparency into the site draws the eye. The different walkways add a three-dimensionality to the streetscape.

35

S E C T I O N S 1:200

Section A:A: The spiral works as a continuation of the floorplates and shelters the central public space. The spiral ends in a viewing spot at the very top where the visitor glances over the entire site to get the full view and feel for the movement and factory. A smaller spiral creates a connection from Green Square, complementing the three-dimensionality of the site. Openings in the old industrial roofs create a flow of light into the buildings.

36

Section B:B: The spaces are united into one with the spiral. Height differences create different rooms and spaces that serve the inner program of the site. The glazed spiral diffuses the light as it softly falls into the buildings. Visibilty stretches across the site and into the different functions.

EARLY STAGES: I N T E RI M SEC T I ON S 1 : 2 0 0 The design was lacking in vertical connections. The outside space was very bound to the ground and the glass volumes very large and despite being defined as social spheres, didn’t have any design that set it apart to be a social space.

48

EARLY STAGES: I N T E RI M SEC T I ON S 1 : 2 0 0 The spherical cut gave a unique architectural feature to the project. The walls leaning in gave and idea of space and symbolism. However the scale was slightly off - the space seemed far too large and undefined. The project evolved into much more detailing and sense of space in its later stages.
