20th century – the era of great discovery & innovation has led mankind to grow in every dimension of life But the downside of this development is the extreme effect that our actions have brought to the planet Climate change is the reprisal of these action, posing numerous threats to mankind and the case of rising sea levels is no different It is something which is in constant effect & will reveal itself to be even more critical in near future

Today we are saturated regarding the information about climate change, its effects & our required response to it, yet there is lack of impactful action against the same from the masses Hence, the aim of this thesis is to identify & explore how architecture can bridge the gap from information to action

Every act in our lifestyle might have a carbon emission If we manage to lower the emissions in respective areas, overall emissions will be lowered

If done at a mass scale, it can actually slow down the conflict, if not stop And to trigger action, we need to stimulate & sensitize the people

MUMBAI, INDIA – CASE OF A SILENTLY SINKING CITY

A SITE COHERING CENTRAL PARK & WATERFRONT

The proposed masterplan of Mumbai Port Complex incorporates the transformation of current Cotton Green area into ‘Hi-tech city’ which will house commercial & residential establishments along with a public central park The particular site selected within Hitech city is an area specifically reserved for buildings of public use Considering the provision & the surrounding tourists experiences, it is an ideal place to propose another experiential programme for people

Mumbai originally being an archipelago of 7 islands was coalesced into a single land mass in 1784 by land reclamation from sea which shaped the map of today’s city But due sea level rise, the city is predicted to experience min 2 feet of flooding into 80% of the city, dissevering the city again and making it impossible to function

India being a peninsula has a lengthy coastline which houses many major cities of the country making them vulnerable to the threat posed by rising sea levels Hence, more people are at risk in case of India compared to many other countries across the world

NARRATIVE FORMATION

INTERPRETING SEA LEVEL RISE INTO THEMES FREYTAG’S NARRATIVE THEORY

The conflict is an irreversible calamity posed by nature over mankind Though a problem slow in its effect but is in turn unsolvable

The peak consequences of sea level rise are still a thing of the future And to combat the conflict we must take action now To stitch an architectural spatial experience, we must first derive the sequence of events The narrative theory helps in forming that sequence of events which will result in sequential nature of spatial experiences

NATURE’S FURY OVER MAN

Unlike other natural disasters, sea level rise can be predicted with respect to time & its consequences Making it one of a kind conflict which comes with a warning

ALERTING WARNING

The biggest threat posed by sea level rise is submergence of land which consist of habitats & infrastructure of the cities Once submerged, it will be lost forever, making the loss incurred - a permanent one

PERMANENT LOSS

The sense that these rising of sea levels is due to global warming conditions, which in turn are a result of our own irresponsible action, it presents us with a mirror to our wrong-doings to the planet

Consists of material providing the theme, establishing the setting or hint about what is coming

SEQUENTIAL SPATIAL NARRATIVE

EXPERIENCING SEA LEVEL RISE THROUGH SPACES

The foremost experience escorts user into a tapering & towering volume The idea here is to give an immediate impression to the user that the coming calamity is alarming & one beyond his control

The swivelling floor & walls give vigorous sense of imbalance and in the last few steps, the user feels completely inferior to this force

Except the basement, the floors are made up of glass, which casts long shadows of people above into the space This shadows signify the predicted loss of lives due to climate change

The succeeding space reveals how climate change is not about a single issue but a multitude of interconnected conflicts

Sea level rise is often represented through complex numbers, difficult for a layman to grasp the severity of the problem Idea is to take the data & represent it spatially, make information tangible

Hence, a space whose volume is equivalent to the amount of ice melted by an average person, every year

It allows one a moment of pause, a moment of silence to retrospect over the experience and moral of this spatial-narrative

The resultant form gives a striking impression of “SINKING” from the orchestration of the masses The monolithic GFRC surface denotes that this threat would not spare even our mightiest of creations. Moreover, its tumultuous presence keeps citizens reminding about the urgency of action

The concluding form is the culmination of these four expressions explored throughout the process of evolving the form These expressions are interpretations of the surrounding context, metaphorical addresses to the conflict and potential ideas or feelings intended to be conveyed

It’s me, all along ! I am standing right in front of my wrong doings

A well highlighting the threat posed by climate changes & also other conflicts tethered with the each other

These consequences are unimaginable ! Looking things from this perspective shakes my consciousness & my approach towards climate change

The purpose of animal captivity have transformed throughout centuries

From being a symbol of power to entertainment of the masses But centuries later, now this truth shall be faced by advocating for these life forms before they perish To do what we should have done a long ago- COEXIST! It is time that to redefine the equation of the “wild in the city” With advancements in scientific research & growing respect for animals, the attempt here is to explore new ways to expose ourselves towards these beings that can develop a sense of emotional responsibility within us towards their conservation

This project is an attempt to imagine a future which seems promising as well as exciting taking in account the UN’s SDG targets i e to integrate ecosystem and biodiversity values into national & local planning, development processes, poverty reduction strategies and accounts It is an attempt to create a reality for the young generation where all living forms are equal

In this proposed program, there can be a potential addition of “FAUNA” – Wild life, which will complete the program in a holistic sense The ideas of conservation & engagement, will be reinforced in the overall context of ‘biodiversity’

Moreover, with the help of an architectural interpretation, it can instil an iconic sense of symbol to the ideas of ‘wildlife conservation’, making it more accessible to the masses The current site condition is at compromise with regular dumping from surrounding illegal settlements, which can also be bettered by awareness of such intervention It will enhance the core value of human-nature relationship as well as help the people & climate of the surroundings

The site is located in Surat near the important creek of the city As a part of Urban Resilience- Surat Municipal Corporation(SMC) has taken steps in creating Biodiversity parks along the creek. This park consists of Urban Forests, an interpretation centre, Aviary and insect conservatory, and Sensory centres

As this needs dense & rich vegetation, it will also help in creating a buffer for the site, from back side too

The idea is to create a model where people can experience the local species with a recognition that they are equal residents of the place as much as humans Also it becomes more easy for the animals to adapt to the habitats

Need for plain lands is necessary here, hence the peninsular portion is used as grasslands

Further, wildlife is classified as per their habitat to identify groupings It also helps in deriving planning responses at site level

PLANNING & SPATIAL RESPONSES TO SITE & PROGRAM

Considering the site & program with that of an urban forest & wildlife park, the idea here is to explore the relationship between inside-outside An approach is derived which allows potentially the best connection between the two realms

All the spaces are connected through a continuous belt –cited as the PUBLIC RING The motive here is to treat & design it as a STREET running through the wildlife park Café, sittings, exhibition display, etc. can be incorporated here.

Every time I pass through this campus, I can’t leave without spending some time in its lush & lively surroundings !

This is a place is almost like a funnel, which draws you towards itself. Especially to nature ! Thanks to it, sitting under a tree is no longer only a memory of my childhood but also a part of my present !

CONTRIBUTION : San Pellegrino is one of the most renowned and appreciated food & beverage brands and it is currently the protagonist of a large architectural operation, bound to enter in the top ranking of iconic headquarters developed for some of the most popular brands in the world BIG’s project for the new San Pellegrino headquarters takes into consideration the roots of Italian culture, providing a contemporary reinterpretation which is reflected in an elegant and deeply innovative architectural project This communication project aims to convey the same values through a set of communication strategies

The San Pellegrino mineral water’s voyage begins in the Val Brembana Mountains, at 1300 mt slm It’s a long 30-year journey to travel from the snowy alps mountain summit to the ‘terroir’ at the base The water travels through different strata of rock by which it receives the characteristics and taste that make it a unique product The rain and the water from melting snow penetrate hundreds of meters underground until they encounter chalk deposits & eventually the Terme through the river

The idea is to treat the water as the protagonist & make the reader experience it’s journey.

RENOVATING A WEEKEND VILLA AT NAL SAROVAR BIRD SANCTUARY, INDIA.

This project is about two individual old shabby cottages near a bird sanctuary, which were left unused for the longest of times The soil being soft, the floors have been sunken, walls were deteriorated, along with the roof The client both the cottages, merged the lawn area into one The intent was to restore the two cottages & merge them into a newly designed weekend home Supporting program like gazebo & temples were added as well

We often think highly of leaving our mark behind and romanticize with the idea of being remembered after we'll be gone Hence, considering this idea of leaving behind 'a legacy' - a noble pursuit But what if we realized, that we already are on one such pursuit whose consequences are not only unpleasant but petrifying Then, the question will not be about 'what to leave', It'll be about - 'to leave or not to leave' But what kind of legacy is this really? And what will you choose? THE LEGACY - a short film, is a attempt to highlights the alarming issue of plastic pollution in a poetic yet impactful manner
