El Cajon Police Citizen’s Academy Begins March 13: The El Cajon Police Department is now accepting applications for the 2019 Citizen’s Police Academy. The ten-week academy provides an overview of the Police Department functions. Students attend weekly classes and learn about topics including the history of law enforcement, the criminal justice system, and crime scene investigation from the various divisions within the Police Department. Students participate in hands-on exercises, such as conducting traffic stops, dusting for fingerprints, and a firearms simulation. The academy begins on Wednesday, March 13, and concludes with a graduation ceremony on Wednesday, May 15. Classes will be held every Wednesday, from 6:00-8:30 p.m. at the El Cajon Police Station, in the Community Room, located at 100 Civic Center Way. Everyone is encouraged to apply; however, residents and people working in El Cajon will be given priority. Participants must be at least 18 years old. All applications must be dropped off or received by mail by March 6. Email applications are not accepted. The first twenty-five applicants will be accepted, on a first-come-first-served basis, pending a background check and approval. All other applications will be placed on a waitlist. Participants who are accepted into the program will be notified shortly after submission. Applications are available online at www.elcajonpolice.org, at the front counter of the Police Department, or by email at sscheurn@cityofelcajon.us. Applications can be dropped off or mailed to: El Cajon Police Department, Attn: Samantha Scheurn, 100 Civic Center Way, El Cajon, CA 92020. If you want to get your hands dirty, join members of the community, including the Lion’s Club and Key Club from Granite Hills and Cajon Valley High schools, to plant trees. Arborists with San Diego Gas & Electric will be on hand to train volunteers on proper tree planting techniques before heading out to plant over 20 trees in the park. In addition to planting trees, representatives from SDG&E, Waste Management, Helix Water District, and San Diego Regional Urban Forests Council will have displays providing conservation tips. Trees can reduce the erosion of topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife. COMMUNITY Matters ADVANCED HEARING AID PAGE FOUR • MAR 01 - 07, 2019
TECHNOLOGY $ For LessThan 200
“I was amazed! Sounds I hadn’t heard in years came back to me!” — Don W., Sherman, TX
How can a hearing aid that costs less than $200
be every bit as good as one sells for $2,250 or more? The answer: Although tremendous
strides have been made in Advanced Hearing Aid Technology, those cost reductions have not been passed on to you. Until now...
MDHearingAid® uses the same kind of Advanced Hearing Aid Technology incorporated into hearing aids that cost thousands more at a small fraction of the price. Over 300,000 satisfied MDHearingAid customers agree: High-quality, FDA-registered hearing aids don’t have to cost a fortune. The fact is, you don’t need to spend thousands for a hearing aid. MDHearingAid is a medical-grade hearing aid offering sophistication and high performance, and works right out of the box with no timeconsuming “adjustment” appointments. You can contact a licensed hearing specialist conveniently online or by phone — even after your purchase at no cost. No other company provides such extensive support. Now that you know...why pay more?
Can a Hearing Aid Delay or Prevent Alzheimer’s and Dementia? A study by the National Institute on Aging suggests older individuals with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. They suggest that an intervention — such as a hearing aid — could delay or prevent this by improving hearing!

The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) is continuing its support of community organizations helping people with developmental disabilities with recent grants totaling $129,400 to four nonprofits in the East County region. The grants will assist Home of Guiding Hands, St. Madeleine Sophie’s Training Center, Noah Homes and Developmental Services Continuum in providing their clients with nursing care. “We are proud to support local organizations that provide quality programs and services to people with developmental and intellectual disabilities,” said Randy Lenac, GHD board president. “These funds will help pay for qualified healthcare professionals to maximize the independence, productivity, and quality of life of our developmentally disabled population.” The GHD board recently approved a $69,000 grant that will help provide nursing care to Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) clients who live independently in their own homes, as well as about 150 residents of 31 HGH-operated community-based homes in El Cajon, Lakeside, San Carlos, and Santee. Many of our clients have compounded health issues, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as complications from their developmental disabilities,” said Mark Klaus, CEO of HGH. “Some of our clients are nonverbal and communicate their needs with a modified form of sign language or sounds, which presents unique challenges to healthcare professionals. This grant from the Grossmont Healthcare District will help our nursing staff provide individualized and direct patient care and avoid unnecessary hospital visits.” The GHD board also recently approved a $25,000 grant to St. Madeleine Sophie’s Training Center (SMSC) for on-site nursing services for the more than 400 adult students with developmental disabilities. SMSC employs more than 120 staff members and operates a fleet of about 45 paratransit vans and buses that transport students between home, campus, and worksites five days a week. “Our daily mission is to educate and empower individuals with developmental disabilities so they can realize their full potential, and this grant will help us fulfill our mission,” said Debra Emerson, CEO, SMSC. The GHD board also recently approved a $20,400 grant to Noah Homes to help provide nursing care to 90 residents who live at Noah Homes’ eight-acre campus in Spring Valley. “These funds will help us remain an innovative leader in the provision of residential care for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and fill-in service gaps for families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease,” said Molly Nocon, CEO, Noah Homes. The GHD board also recently approved a $15,000 grant to Developmental Services Continuum (DSC), a nonprofit that provides residential homes and programming alternatives for people with severe behavioral challenges. Based in Lemon Grove, DSC currently serves about 38 adults with intellectual developmental disabilities. “We our motivated to maintain and improve the physical and behavioral health of our clients and provide quality medical care that allows them to stay in their homes as they age,” said Cecelia Ramsey, executive director, DSC. “This grant from the Grossmont Healthcare District will help us provide guidance and support to individuals dealing with complex medical issues.” The Grossmont Healthcare District is a public agency that supports various health-related community programs and services in the East Region. Formed in 1952 to build and operate Grossmont Hospital, GHD now leases operations to Sharp HealthCare via a publicprivate partnership and continues to own the hospital on behalf of local taxpayers. The District is governed by a five-member board of directors, each elected to four-year terms, who represent more than 500,000 people residing within the District’s 750 square miles in San Diego’s East County. For more information about GHD, visit: www.grossmonthealthcare.org.
