Flag Retirement
If you have a flag that needs to be retired, it can be donated locally at the office of Randy Voepel, 71st District California State Assembly (619-258-7737), American Legion/VFW Post of Santee (619-5624022), Santee Historical Society (619-449-2024), or contact your local VFW Post. They will be sure that your flag is retired in a proper, dignified manner. Flags brought to Assemblyman Randy Voepel’s office will be retired in a Sacramento ceremony. Flags brought to American Legion/VFW Post of Santee or Santee Historical
Society will be retired in a Santee ceremony. The United States Flag Code, Title 4, Section 8k states: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Flag Retirement is the term used to define the proper, dignified way of destroying United States flags that are no longer fit to serve the nation. How do you know your flag should be retired? Sometimes your flag will only need to be cleaned to restore its original appearance. Regular cleaning of your flag can extend its life
Grandson Meets Assemblyman Randy Voepel considerably. Flags can be machine-washed with a mild detergent in cold water. Flags should be hung to dry or laid flat. Do not fold the flag if it is damp. If it is possible, mend a tattered flag at early signs of wear. The edge furthest from the staff, known as the “fly” end is usually the first part of the flag to show wear. The fly end may start to unravel due to weather conditions. It is up to you to decide when your flag is ready to be retired. If the flag is faded, unable to be repaired, or is too tattered then the flag should be retired.
Several weeks ago we had our grandson for the weekend. His parents were out of town for the weekend celebrating his mom’s birthday. Saturday, we took our grandson to Mama Rosas Italian Restaurant in El Cajon for lunch. He loves their garlic bread. During our lunch, Assemblyman Randy Voepel and his wife entered the restaurant. We said hello, chatted a bit, and continued our lunch. We finished our lunch and were leaving. We dropped by Randy’s table to say goodbye. As my grandson was saying goodbye, Randy gave my grandson
a 1977 JFK half dollar. He thanked Randy and said he would put the coin in a special place. Sunday, I asked my grandson how he wanted to thank Randy for the half dollar. He said that he wanted to write a letter. So we wrote a letter, with me being the only dictionary. He finished the letter and I took it to Randy’s local office the next day. Assemblyman Voepel was so impressed with the letter that it is hanging on his office wall. When grandpa (me) heard that, we arranged a photo op with Randy at his office, holding the letter, and my grandson holding the half dollar.
