Nominations are open, Grossmont Healthcare District Seeks to Honor Volunteers with 2019 Healthcare Heroes Awards
Nominations are open, Grossmont Healthcare District seeks to honor volunteers with 2019 Healthcare Heroes awards. The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) is seeking nominees for its 2019 Healthcare Heroes awards. Now in its 13th year, the Healthcare Heroes is GHD’s annual awards program recognizing volunteers who advance the delivery of quality health services in the East County region. “Volunteers are a significant part of care teams in local health organizations, working alongside healthcare professionals,” said Randy Lenac, GHD board president. “The purpose of the Healthcare Heroes Awards is to recognize volunteers whose unsung work in healthcare might not otherwise be celebrated. We solicit the assistance of all East County residents in nominating their peers so we can recognize their commitment to care and inspire others.” Examples of volunteers eligible for nomination include health educators, volunteer transportation providers, health professionals, first responders, community clinic volunteers, pastoral caregivers, grant writers, members of service clubs, members of policy or advocacy organizations, auxiliary members and healthcare-related youth volunteers. Nominees may include any individual volunteer or volunteer(s) of organizations who demonstrate selfless dedication beyond their paid duties. Nominees from prior years are eligible to be nominated again, if they were not previously selected as honorees. Deadline for submission of entries is Friday, March 8. Entries can be submitted online through the GHD website, e-mailed, or mailed to the GHD offices at 9001 Wakarusa St., La Mesa. Nomination forms are available at www.grossmonthealthcare.org/operations/special-events/healthcare-heroes. The 2018 honorees included a family practice physician who helps those not able to afford health insurance, two volunteers who provide one-on-one comfort following crisis events, a 23-year-old who spends part of her weekends in a hospital emergency room, a couple who drives people to their cancer treatments and a non-profit board member who has volunteered for the past 20 years. The Grossmont Healthcare District is a public agency that supports various health-related community programs and services in the East Region. Formed in 1952 to build and operate Grossmont Hospital, GHD now leases operations to Sharp HealthCare via a public-private partnership, and continues to own the hospital on behalf of local taxpayers. The District is governed by a five-member board of directors, each elected to four-year terms, who represent more than 500,000 people residing within the District’s 750 square miles in San Diego’s East County. Santee Honors Connie and Ed Bailey with
Certificates of Appreciation Connie and Ed Bailey began volunteering for the City of Santee in the City Clerk’s Office in February 2003. Connie has performed a number of tasks in the Clerk’s Office, including scanning documents into Questys (the City’s document imaging program), processing mail, taking documents to the County Recorder’s Office, providing office and telephone coverage, assisting during Oath of Office events and conducting research. In 2006, Connie was named Volunteer of the Year. Ed has assisted with retrieving boxes from our offsite storage facility, making minor repairs around the office, helping out during special events and setting up the Council Chambers for Council meetings.
In the 16 years that Connie and Ed have volunteered in the Clerk’s Office, they have jointly contributed over 5,750 hours to the City of Santee. Connie and Ed have been an essential part of the Clerk’s Office, dependable volunteers who have dedicated many hours of their time to the City. The Clerk’s Office wishes them both the very best and they will certainly be missed.

Big step regarding the housing shortage: The Board of Supervisors recently voted to waive county permit and development impact fees over the next five years for property owners wishing to build granny flats on lots with existing homes. The units can be used for family members or rented out as a source of income for the homeowner. The program could result in thousands of additional homes within the county’s unincorporated areas, on land already zoned for housing. This is a big step forward for folks in need of affordable options in our region. Gearing up for another year as chair: The board was pleased to recently welcome two new supervisors at the beginning of January: Nathan Fletcher, representing District 4, and Jim Desmond, District 5. I was honored to be appointed the 2019 chair of the board. There is a lot of work to be done and we will most certainly be diving head first into the most pressing issues. Backcountry biz: I was happy to attend the grand opening of the new Pine Valley Fire Station last month. This beautiful $8.2 million project has created a large sum of jobs and beefed up fire protection in the backcountry. I am so thankful for everything that our firstresponders do for us every day. If I can assist with a county issue, please call my office at 619531-5522 or email dianne.jacob@sdcounty.ca.gov.

TECHNOLOGY $ For LessThan 200
“I was amazed! Sounds I hadn’t heard in years came back to me!” — Don W., Sherman, TX
How can a hearing aid that costs less than $200
be every bit as good as one sells for $2,250 or more? The answer: Although tremendous
strides have been made in Advanced Hearing Aid Technology, those cost reductions have not been passed on to you. Until now...
MDHearingAid® uses the same kind of Advanced Hearing Aid Technology incorporated into hearing aids that cost thousands more at a small fraction of the price. Over 300,000 satisfied MDHearingAid customers agree: High-quality, FDA-registered hearing aids don’t have to cost a fortune. The fact is, you don’t need to spend thousands for a hearing aid. MDHearingAid is a medical-grade hearing aid offering sophistication and high performance, and works right out of the box with no timeconsuming “adjustment” appointments. You can contact a licensed hearing specialist conveniently online or by phone — even after your purchase at no cost. No other company provides such extensive support. Now that you know...why pay more?
Can a Hearing Aid Delay or Prevent Alzheimer’s and Dementia? A study by the National Institute on Aging suggests older individuals with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. They suggest that an intervention — such as a hearing aid — could delay or prevent this by improving hearing!
Grossmont College’s Theatre Arts Launches 2019 Spring Season EL CAJON – The Grossmont College Theatre Arts Department’s spring season gets under way Feb. 1 with the 14th annual Inside the Actors Process: Monsters, Magic, and Mischief, followed by original productions of Spring Awakening in March and Failure: A Love Story in May. Inside the Actors Process is an annual production that will be appearing at more than a dozen local high schools throughout the region as part of an ongoing effort at exposing teen audiences to the art of acting. Coordinated by Benjamin Cole, Inside the Actors Process: Monsters, Magic, and Mischief will be performed for the public at the Stagehouse Theatre on Feb. 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. The spring season continues with a production of Spring Awakening, which earned eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Spring Awakening takes a critical look at the sexually oppressive culture of 19th century Germany and is considered a seminal work in the modern history of theatre. Based on the play by Frank Wedekind, with music by Duncan Sheik and directed by Meg DeBoard, Spring Awakening will be performed March 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23 at 7:30 p.m. and March 16 and 23 at 2 p.m. The 2018-19 season concludes with Failure: A Love Story, written by Philip Dawkins and directed by Brian Rickel. Failure: A Love Story is set in 1928, the last year of each of the Fail sisters’ lives. This funny, moving and profoundly wise play reminds us that in the end, all that remains is love. Failure: A Love Story will be performed May 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and May 11 and 18 at 2 p.m. General admission tickets are $15 each, $12 for faculty, staff, seniors and military, and $10 for GrossmontCuyamaca Community College District students. Season and individual tickets can be purchased by calling (619) 644-7234 or by visiting www.grossmont.edu/theatrebrochure. Parking is free with the purchase of a ticket, and all major credit cards are accepted. A mini-season ticket package, which comes with admission to all three performances, is just $25. For those wishing to purchase tickets in person, construction of a new performing and visual arts center is taking place adjacent to the Stagehouse Theatre, and that has resulted in the Theatre Arts Department office in Building 22-A moving to a portable building at the southeast corner of Lot 1. A Pop Up Box office will also be available by the Stagehouse Theatre entrance (Building 21, Room 241) one hour prior to each performance. Recommended guest parking is in Lot 1G on the southwestern side of the campus.
