Name Jay Stelling BRIEF TITLE: The National Autistic Society What are you looking for in a creative partner? What are your aims? I am looking for partners who are dedicated, professional and punctual. I want to work with people who are committed to the course and who want to be here. I think it is important to approach teamwork with a positive attitude; I am looking for enthusiastic partners with the ambition to create exciting work. I plan to produce an animation in response to this brief and would like to work with individuals who have a similar vision for an emotive, human video with immersive/scenic illustrations. I would like to work with an animator and learn more about the animation process. It may be useful to work with someone who is skilled in typography or graphic design to bring the branding of the campaign together, but I am definitely looking for skilled animator(s) or illustrators who enjoy telling stories and who are passionate about this brief/cause. It would be great to have partner(s) with shared interests or visual styles, since this would make negotiating artistic direction easier, but I know that sometimes choosing a partner/colleague/teammate is not possible and we have to work with people who are essentially very different. What are your specific areas of creative interest? I’m interested in children’s illustration, puppets, art dolls, prop-making, characters, stop-motion and toy design. I’m fascinated by storytelling, performance and narrative. I usually make my illustrations for an intended audience of children and I’m interested in this area of the book industry. I admire illustrators such as Chris Sickels, Carson Ellis, Julia Sarda, Tove Jansson and filmmakers/animators Jim Henson, LAIKA, Smallfilms. What specific creative skills do you have to offer in relation to a creative partnership? How do you intend to use them? I am skilled in character design and storytelling. I intend to use these skills in the building of narratives for our animation and in the drawing/conceptualising of characters. I would like to practise storyboarding to plan and devise narratives and spend time developing characters in my sketchbook.
What specific non-creative skills do you have to offer in relation to a creative partnership? How do you intend to use them? I am driven by research and would use this to inform the creative outcome of this project, learning about the topic and collecting work that inspires me on mood boards. I am quite organised and would try to manage the group, making sure that everyone knows what they are doing/arranging meetings/taking notes. I am very committed, punctual and reliable – I will always be in the building before 9am and will never be late. I can always be counted on to get things done. My team will need me to be versatile, flexible and open minded in the development of this project. What do you see your specific roles be in the collaboration? Communications – initiate and maintain group chat, ensuring everyone is aware of each meeting and that we are all on the same page. Send regular updates and open shared Google Drive and Pinterest. Organisation – set deadlines, make sure we’re all getting the work done, timetable and plan tasks. Team Management – checking everyone is happy and working well together. What will your individual responsibilities be in the collaboration? I will be responsible for the creation of an animation, which will involve designing, drawing and animating frames for a 30 second video. What will your joint responsibilities be? How will you deal with your project costs and budget? We will all be expected to finish work by set deadlines. We will all attend meetings and discuss progress each week. We aim to make this collaboration as fair as possible, so we will be sharing all responsibilities and any costs that we incur.
