2023 LEMOLO RESIDENCE LOCATION: LEMOLO, WASHINGTON FUNCTION: SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENCE

On the outskirts of the town of Poulsbo lies Lemolo, a beautiful rural community hemmed in by iconic landscape features, typical of the Pacific Northwest. Shaped by tall evergreen forests, picturesque views of the Olympic Mountains and the tranquility of Liberty Bay directly at its lower extents, the site is part of one of the original farmhouse properties in the Poulsbo area. The 19th century neighboring estate and its iconic farmhouse residence is still standing and occupied to this day, and is well-kept in its original style by the same family that homesteaded in this place. With respect for the history of the site, and in keeping with the spirit of on-site cultivation and living as stewards of the land, the newly redeveloped property includes a vineyard of Cabernet Blanc and Alberino varieties that will be cultivated for small-scale wine production.

LOCATION: TWISP, WASHINGTON FUNCTION: SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENCE

On August ug 19th 2015 the Okanagan ag Complex pl Fire blazed near Twisp, p, a small town in the Methow Valley ey burning ng over 300,000 ,0 acres,, destroying ying manyy private pr properties, prop , and worst of all,, killing g three firefigh ghters working ng to stop op it. My familyy was among g those who lost p property pe y in the fire. We were left with a pile p of ash and debris that had been for manyy years ye a simple mp rustic cabin and a special sp place to be together pl ge and enjoy the many outdoor activities the Methow Valley has to offer year round. The family ly came to me with the g general plan p layout they ey had sketched in pencil p on a p piece of notebook pap p paper. From there I took on the project and worked collaboratively proj ly with them every ry step p of the way ay to challenge the design, gn, ultimately ly p producing ng a contemporary po ry p project je that exceeded their expectations pe while creating g value that didn’t exist before and p procuring ng a new place pl on the same site as the previous cabin that we can enjoy pr nj and share for many years to come. Considering g the serious fire hazard in the region, eg n, the building g exterior is clad with non-combustible materials, a combination of p prefinished corrugated ga metal pa panels and fiber cement pa panels. Standing ng seam metal roofs are supported pp by a fire-resistive treated wood structural system, sy , designed gn to carryy the heavyy snow loads of winter;; heavyy slabs of snow are retained byy a snow break system ys installed on the sloped pe roof planes, providing additional insulation for the building while preventing potential damage caused by slides.
