Cheltenham Jazz Festival: For many jazz lovers, the Mayday bank holiday weekend is reserved for the Cheltenham Jazz Festival and this year promises another strong line-up. From the 1st - 6th May the town’s Montpellier Gardens will showcase a selection of homegrown and international names, with Gary Burton, Madeleine Peyroux, Ravi Coltrane, Mike Gibbs, Gregory Porter, Dave Douglas and Mike Stern comprising the cream of the latter. Jamie Cullum is again on hand as Guest Director, and the UK scene is comprehensively represented across the board, with
UNESCO World Jazz Day:
and in particular from the younger generation of the UK’s jazz stars. While speaking to Tony DudleyEvans for this month’s Out & About piece, he discussed a few choice gigs in his capacity as the festival’s Programme Advisor: Troyk-estra (5th May), the augmented version of Troyka featuring the trio combined with a big band; pianist Reuben James (5th), who the keen-eared may know from his time spent with Abram Wilson, appearing with his trio featuring Zara McFarlane on vocals; and the ceaselessly inventive Shabaka Hutchings leads his two-drummer Sons of Kemet group (4th). Celebrating the independent record shop scene worldwide, this is the sixth annual your nearest participating store via special events and promotions, and support your local jazz shop! www.recordstoreday.co.uk
Kenny Wheeler exhibition: On 16th April, the Royal Academy of Music will open a new exhibition entitled Kenny Wheeler: Master of Melancholy Chaos. Telling the 83year old trumpeter’s story through seven milestone recordings, the exhibition features a wealth of hitherto unseen articles and artefacts, from original scores, personal notes and sketches and memorabilia, accompanied by a series of recordings of recent interviews. alike, Anthony Strong releases Stepping Out on French label Naïve on 8th April. He follows in the footsteps of the crooner legends as well as more modern singers like Harry Connick Jr. and Jamie Cullum, with a classy mixture of modern band that, while undoubtedly slick, largely avoids the charges of excessive ‘smoothness’ that can often be levelled at such music. Strong’s arrangements are fresh and punchy, and his vocals and piano playing are well suited to the material on offer. Hippodrome Casino on 18th April – perhaps not quite Sinatra at the Sands, but Strong has a promising future that could lead anywhere…
