The opening show features the group playing in Antibes in 1967 in one of its last recorded concerts before it disbanded in December of that same year. The bonus set is unique, as it presents the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s only existing recordings with Bobby Hackett and Benny Goodman. It includes an outstanding quartet version (with Hackett) of “Poor Butterfly,” a tune Brubeck never recorded again, as well as Desmond’s only existing reading of “On the Sunny Side of the Street”.

This release presents two complete never before heard 1965 radio broadcasts from the Half Note in New York, showcasing the great Wes Montgomery with the Wynton Kelly Trio. The pianist’s trio featured Jimmy Cobb on drums, and two different bassists, Ron Carter and Larry Ridley, replacing the regular member Paul Chambers, who for some reason couldn’t attend the shows. These performances took place a few months before the well-known recordings made by Montgomery and Kelly for Verve at the same venue, issued as Smokin’ at the Half Note. Among the many highlights, these programs contain an amazing unaccompanied guitar version of Wes’ Mi Cosa, his only live readings of All the Things You Are, and his own composition Cariba, as well as the guitarist’s only existing versions of Birks’ Works, Laura and I Remember You!

Hersch and Alessi pursue each other, chase each other, overlap each other and slowly find increasingly different languages and expressive forms, resulting in an utterly fascinating, magnetic CD. Crosby died of a heart attack on August 11, 1962, less than two months after recording this date. This release contains Gerry Mulligan’s complete first and second quartet LPs with Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone: The Gerry Mulligan Quartet (Verve V6-8466), and Spring Is Sprung (Philips PHM200-077), both taped in 1962. Mostly recorded without a piano (Mulligan and Brookmeyer play piano on just three tracks), these sides followed the standard set by Mulligan himself on his classic piano-less quartets with Chet Baker, Art Farmer, and with Brookmeyer, himself (the baritone saxophonist and trombonist’s first quartet attempts date from 1954). This release presents Sonny Stitt’s complete original 1962 album Rearin’ Back (Argo LPS-709), one of only two collaborations between the saxophonist and pianist Ronnie Mathews. As a bonus, another complete album that was recorded in 1960 album by Stitt dedicated exclusively to the songbook of Duke Ellington, appearing here on CD for the first time ever. He is showcase again in a quartet format, backed this time by Lou Levy, Paul Chambers (in his only session with Stitt outside of their September-October 1960 tour with the Miles Davis Quintet), and Stan Levey. Calendar Girl (Liberty SL9002) contains 13 songs, twelve of which feature a different month in the title (the set closes appropriately with Arthur Hamilton’s The Thirteenth Month), while Around Midnight (Liberty LST7164) is a collection of songs evoking nighttime. As a bonus, four rare tunes taped for Bethlehem featuring the singer fronting a band conducted by Bobby Troup (the producer of the first LP and London’s husband), which mark her earliest commercial recordings.

A top studio arranger Daniels wrote many scores for motion pictures and is also noted for his work with Les Baxter. Charlie Parker was idolized by his fellow musicians, and when he was featured at the Apollo Theater in August of 1950, three of his devoted admirers, Al Porcino, Don Lanphere, and Jimmy Knepper (talented players in their own right), managed to tape six complete shows by the great Bird. All of these long unavailable sets, on which the saxophonist is accompanied by strings, are included here, as well as a single reading of “I Cried for You” on which Bird backs Sarah Vaughan, and a later broadcast from the Apollo on which he is briefly heard. As a bonus, four recordings made by Porcino, Lanphere and Knepper at the Apollo during the same engagement, featuring Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Zoot Sims, and Sarah Vaughan. THE GERMAN RECORDINGS 1952 - 1955 A redhead with striking good looks, hypersensitive and outrageously talented – she quickly became an object of attention in the early 1950s. The great Leonard Feather wrote Dear Jutta and promised her a great career in the USA. So in late 1955 she left for New York.Alfred Lion signed her to Blue Note; three recordings in just eight months; an object of awe in the clubs – the Frauleinwunder. And then it was all over as quickly as it had started. She fell out with Feather, withdrew from the jazz scene altogether, ran into financial difficulties, turned to drink. In 1958 she found a job as a seamstress in Queens, took photographs, painted in her spare time. She retired in 1995, devoted herself to making traditional dolls. She died in 2003, aged 78, reclusive, alone. She had never been back to her native Germany. Her volume of work is slender and erratic. The Koblenz recordings from November 1952 reveal a precocious talent: entirely at ease in the standards, creatively original with the tunes and headstrong in improvisation. Dieter Zimmerle’s studio recordings with her quintet were made just before she left for the USA – and what a legacy it turned out to be! What Is This Thing Called Love? asks Cole Porter of all the great jazz soloists. Jutta Hipp had an answer. But she never told anyone. (From the liner notes)
