Although they had worked and recorded together since the mid-thirties, pianist Teddy Wilson and drummer Jo Jones only recorded in the trio format during the mid-1950s. All of their studio trio works are contained here. Included on this set are the following original albums: For Quiet Lovers (Verve MGV2029), I Got Rhythm (Verve MGV2073), The Impeccable Mr. Wilson (Verve MGV8272) & These Tunes Remind Me of You (Verve MGV8299)! Their studio trio collaborations were recorded in New York during three extended sessions on January 1, 1955, March 5, 1956, and September 13, 1956. Milt Hinton, Gene Ramey, and Al Lucas alternated on bass. The September 20, 1954 studio session added here as a bonus at the end of CD3 is a strange experiment. Instead of the usual piano/bass/drums format, it includes Benny Carter’s alto sax in place of the bass, creating an authentic three-star line-up with each musician enjoying an equal share of solo space.
TEDDY WILSON (piano), JO JONES (drums) on all tracks, with Disc 1 [1-12]: Milt Hinton (bass). New York, January 1, 1955. Disc 1 [13-23] & Disc 2 [1-2]: Gene Ramey (bass). New York, March 5, 1956. Disc 2 [3-18] & Disc 3 [1-8]: Al Lucas (bass). New York, September 13, 1956.

Freedom Sound + Lookin’ Ahead
You Better Believe It! + Moment of Truth
This release presents the Jazz Crusader’s first two albums in their entirety: Freedom Sound (Pacific Jazz ST-27), and Lookin’ Ahead (Pacific Jazz ST-43). Employing a twohorn front line (trombone and tenor saxophone), the group’s sound was rooted in hard bop, with an emphasis on R&B and soul. They would shorten their name to “The Crusaders” in 1971, when they decided to adopt a jazz-funk style. A long alternate take of “M.J.S. Funk” from the Freedom Sound sessions has been added here as a bonus. The 16-page booklet includes updated and original liner notes, as well as the complete Down Beat reviews for both albums.
This release presents two amazing big band LPs by Gerald Wilson in their entirety: You Better Believe It! (Pacific Jazz ST-34), and Moment of Truth (Pacific Jazz ST-61). These were Wilson’s two first albums for the Pacific label and count among the very best he ever made. Included here is the original version of “Viva Tirado!”, a song which would later become a hit. The band features such impressive sidemen as Joe Maini, Buddy Collette, Bud Shank, Harold Land, Teddy Edwards, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Joe Pass, and Mel Lewis, to name a few. As a bonus, a rare tune by Wilson’s orchestra recorded live in 1954, when Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Wardell Gray, Melba Liston and Sonny Criss were members of the band. Our 16-page booklet includes updated and original liner notes, as well as the complete Down Beat reviews for both albums.

The LP marks the latter musician’s only existing collaboration with Mulligan. Recorded in 1958-59, What Is There to Say? SONNY STITT
JIMMY SMITH
This release presents two complete original albums by Sonny Stiit. The long unavailable The Sensual Sound of Sonny Stitt (Verve V6-8451; it only appeared before on CD in a long out of print Japanese edition) marks the saxophonist’s only collaboration with Ralph Burns, who arranged all of the tunes and conducted the big band plus a string section. Sonny Stitt and The Top Brass (Atlantic SD1395) combines Sonny’s mastery with an all-star group featuring Blue Mitchell and Jimmy Cleveland, among others, and presenting the work of two other prestigious arrangers, Tadd Dameron and Jimmy Mundy. As a further bonus, the only known tune from a rare session recorded by Stitt shortly before the Top Brass date. It showcases Sonny in a tenor sax duet with Dexter Gordon, and with the great Don Patterson backing them on organ. This was the only studio session by Stitt and Gordon together.
This release contains Jimmy Smith’s complete classic 1962 LP Bashin’ - The Unpredictable Jimmy Smith (Verve V6-8474), featuring the leader backed by a big band, and showcased in a trio set. The material consists of a combination between old standards and originals arranged by Oliver Nelson. As a bonus, two 45 RPM versions of tunes from the LP, as well as the trio album Jimmy Smith Plays Fats Waller (Blue Note BST84100), recorded during the same year, and featuring the exact same formation as the trio tracks from Bashin’ with his regular guitarist and drummer, Quentin Warren and Donald Bailey, respectively. As its title clearly indicates, it presents a selection of tunes composed or regularly performed by the great Fats Waller, who was one of the first jazzmen to devote extensive recordings to the organ.

ole fessor lindgreen Fessor and the Great Ones
Next to Papa Bue, Fessor is the most famous bandleader in Denmark. Ole “Fessor” Lindgreen will be 75 years old on May 16th, and Storyville Records is releasing a double CD to mark the occasion. Fessor, like Papa Bue, plays the trombone. His Big City Band featured some of Denmark’s best musicians and was on the scene for decades, (1968-2003), playing 230 gigs a year and performing many places around the world - from Copenhagen to New Orleans. Fessor has played and toured with a number of famous American jazz musicians, like Wild Bill Davison, Ralph Sutton, Sammy Price, George Kelly, Gene “Mighty Flea” Connors, Jay McShann, Doc Cheatham, Herb Hall, John Williams, Al Casey, Claude Williams and Champion Jack Dupree. His love of New Orleans - and the respect he earned from musicians there - resulted in two recordings made with these artists in “the birthplace of Jazz”. Both of these sessions can be heard on CD 1. On CD 2 are previously unreleased live recordings from Denmark. One is with Fessor’s Riverboat Stompers from the Riverboat Festival on June 26, 2010; the other is a club gig with Fessor’s Jazz Kings in Køge on March 24, 2012. CD 1: (78:57 min.): 01.
