THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHT AND SOUND Multi-Performance Space Design Studio - Fall 2019

4

The Festival of Light and Sound is a bedazzling, makeshift space of many performances.

5

After passing through the alleyway threshold, one finds themselves in an atrium illuminated by many coloured skylights and their illusionary reflections.

Eventually, they escape from the festival in a narrow, translucent, and winding walkway that opens to a quiet, vast space.

The festival below is now at a distance. Here, people not only watch the singular performance, but also the performance they just came from.

At the intersection of two rail tracks, an industrial road, a major artery, steep hills, and vegetation, the library inspires gathering, vibrancy, and social collision.

The kitchen sits at the heart of the library and the hub of the community. Surrounding it are four other boxes, which hold hubs of activity.

The library’s form is made of cubes that intersect to create complexity. It mirrors how spaces can intersect to create community.

16

An interfacing space connects them, creating a geometric and complex form. Between hubs, people collide, and possibilities are open.

The structure indicates a space for display and interaction. It consists of a suspended large frame, which then in turn suspends six triangular platforms. Ballast Detail

10 AINSLIE STREET SOUTH Infill House Design Studio - Fall 2018

26

10 Ainslie Street South is a site in the historical district of Galt, Cambridge. It has problems that are typical of urban infill sites. - Lacks vegetation - Cramped and narrow - Dark - Noisy - Lacks inherent privacy

27

To combat these problems, the house has a multi-storey atrium, which acts as the heart of the home. Natural light pours in from above. Nodal spaces attach themselves to the atrium and circulation space in the centre.

The use of brick and steel is an homage to Galt’s industrial origins and historical buildings.

A brick screen shelters the interior while filtering light.

With visual connections between different work and living areas, this house becomes a spacious, yet cozy, ‘town within a town’.

I’m an architecture student, a designer, a storyteller, and a nerd. I doodle, sketch, and imagine the stories of things we make so we can imagine a kinder future.

Thank you. Jennifer Chen
