DeSoto County Tourism Development Department Question: Tell us about DeSoto County Tourism Development Department Answer: Whether it’s a prized Tiffany lamp or the fossilized tooth of a 10,000-year-old shark, it’s a day on the links or a trip down the Peace River, historic building tours or big-thrilling rodeos— there’s something for everyone in DeSoto County and downtown city of Arcadia. Q: What else? A: Quality + quantity. That’s how the city of Arcadia was named “Best Place for Antique Shopping” by Florida Monthly Magazine. With dozens of exceptional indoor establishments plus street vendors spread over the heart of downtown, Arcadia offers an antiquing experience second to none. Another Arcadia extra: ambience. Come anytime, and be sure not to miss our monthly Antiques Fair held monthly on the 4th Saturday, bringing more than 100 premiere dealers of antiques and collectibles to the city. With architecture dating back to the turn of the 20th century and beyond, Arcadia is a lovely city
that’s a lot more than just pretty facades—it’s a place rich in history and community spirit, where the fruits and vegetables are right off the farm, the pies are baked fresh daily, and the smiles are as warm as the sun that filters through the branches of the Tree of Knowledge, the town’s massive oak tree planted downtown in 1889. One of Florida’s leading cattle and citrus producers, we’re also home to flourishing farming operations in peaches, blueberries, watermelons and more. DeSoto also yields a bumper crop of delightful activities, including family favorite farm tours, farmer’s markets and food festivals. Florida actually has the country’s longest history of ranching—our first cattle came from the Spanish explorers, and here in DeSoto we’re proud to carry on that vital tradition. Cowboys are still riding the ranges on our thriving cattle ranches, and every year the Arcadia’s All-Florida Championship Rodeo, the state’s oldest and largest rodeo, offers excellent family entertainment at the new Mosaic Arena.

McDonalds: We love our town, the people and the community Question: Tell us about your family business? Answer: Tim [Vowels] has had ketchup in his veins for 35 years. Tim has been a [McDonald’s franchise] operator for 24 years. The family owned nine restaurants from 1994 until 2007, one in DeSoto County, one in Hardee County, four in Highlands County, and one in Polk County and two in Okeechobee County. The family decided to sell all but Arcadia in 2007. In 2014, Tim’s father decided to retire, so Tim purchased the store then. In January 2016, the opportunity became available for us to purchase a store in Okeechobee, which is on US Highway 441. McDonald’s has a spousal/next-generation program that is for operator’s spouses and their children, which Pam is currently in the program. Q: McDonald’s has made big changes to the customer experience, kiosks and a new look. What has been the feedback? A: We have to change with the times, which includes table service, self-serve kiosks, a new modern contemporary look. McDonald’s belief is if you
are greening you are growing … anything else is stagnant. Some people believe that the kiosks will replace a person — which is not true. We have had to hire more employees to work this area. The customers love the GMA (Global Mobile App) — there are daily and weekly specials. The new looks are so that customers can go to any McDonald’s and experience a modern ambiance. McDonald’s brand is over 65 years old … you have to change with time or you will no longer exist.

Mosaic in DeSoto County
Mosaic mines phosphate and manufactures it into fertilizer and animal feed supplements, enabling farmers and ranchers to produce more food on less land. Approximately 3,600 Mosaic employees call Florida home – some living here in DeSoto County. Because our operations are in our own backyards, that means we’re intensely focused on operating responsibly and maintaining positive relationships with our neighbors. We recognize the value of ensuring the community understands our plans and operations and how we permit our mining projects. Permitting a phosphate mine in Florida is a long and complex process—and one that is often misunderstood. Years of data are collected on a site to prepare an application. Phosphate mining requires permits and review from the local, state and federal agencies. To increase the public’s understanding and awareness of Mosaic’s mining initiatives, we hold community meetings throughout the permitting process and work with residents and organizations countywide to build a better understanding of our projects through outreach efforts.
Since 1975, the State of Florida requires the phosphate industry to return every acre it mines back to productive use through a process called mine reclamation. Mined lands have been successfully reclaimed into valuable wetlands, agricultural land, wildlife habitats, parks and neighborhoods. Our communities are also our homes - where we live, work and raise children. We are dedicated to strengthening the community and improving the local economy through our support of various programs and activities here in DeSoto. way of mailing paper ads to neighborhoods. All of this makes for great success in helping property sell. Q: You have a blog. What has been the feedback? A: One the first pages people click on when visiting our website is our blog. We have actually had over 24,000 views of our blog in the past 30 days. We try to include homes we have sold, recently reduced properties, little articles about our community and fun subjects such as how to make a small bathroom feel larger. Q: What would you tell someone about DeSoto County who’s choosing where to locate in Florida? Why are we different? A: DeSoto County is very different than most areas around us. We are a very rural community, but we are just a 30-minute drive to beaches, entertainment and shopping. Our antique district is amazing and well known. The best thing about DeSoto County is the people. We have a community that loves like no other. During recent storms, our community was there for each other. You can’t put a value on that!

Question: Tell us about Williamson Group Realty Answer: We have been in the real estate, title and banking industry for over 30 years. Throughout the years we have developed a natural love for helping people buy and sell property, whether that be homes or vacant land. Michelle Williamson started The Williamson Group Realty, Inc. in 2008. We now have six amazing agents and three full-time assistants. Q: What makes your firm different than the others? A: We are a firm believer that real estate agents should work for the people, not the commissions. We pride ourselves on having the best customer service. We love our community and our careers really branch from the idea that “we are here to serve DeSoto County.” Another strength that stands out among competitors is our aggressive marketing plans and our social media presence. Eighty-one percent of shoppers conduct online research before buying and selling. For every single one of our listings, we create a custom marketing plan to produce the maximum exposure on the internet. We also use the old-fashioned

Arcadia Village: Where neighborliness still means something Question: Tell us about Arcadia Village. Answer: Arcadia Village is an active 55+ community that includes two clubhouses, two heated pools, two jacuzzis, fishing lakes, two executive golf courses and NUMEROUS daily activities. Our community is located less than one mile from the new Arcadia Rodeo grounds. Q: What makes Arcadia Village different? A: The thing that makes our community different from others is that our residents seem to have that old-fashioned concept of what life used to be like a
long time ago in relation to having neighbors. These days a lot of people don’t even know the names of those that live near them! In our community, neighbors are always willing to help neighbors when in need, they genuinely have care and concern for each other and watch out for their interests as most neighborhoods were years ago! Q: What else? A: People are happy to live here because it is safe, quiet, secure and a lot of fun!

A Message to the People of DeSoto County Our mission is to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people, and 2017 certainly gave us many chances to do so. Some things to keep in mind as we move into 2018 are: • Flu is a great concern, especially for children and pregnant women. Please take time to get a flu shot. You may still get sick, but the illness will be less severe and recovery time shorter. Flu shots are available at pharmacies, health departments, and healthcare providers. Ask about pneumonia vaccine, too, especially for those over 65 or with underlying health conditions. • Other vaccine-preventable diseases and foodborne illnesses have shown increased activity. Chickenpox and hepatitis B can be avoided through immunizations. Practicing good hand hygiene helps lower the risk of infection and illness. The Vaccines for Children program offers free childhood immunizations so that all children can be protected. • Serving those in our communities living with HIV/ AIDS is one of our priorities. People often do not
know their status. Our clinic offers free confidential testing and services to anyone who needs help getting medications or managing their condition. Please call 863-491-7590, ext. 269, for more information. • Rabies is a concern, especially in bats. Sadly, there have been two human rabies cases in Florida resulting in deaths. Please do not handle wild or unfamiliar animals, or those that appear sick. If you have any suspicion that you have been scratched or bitten, seek immediate medical attention. Teach children about this, too, as they are naturally curious and may not think before touching. • We all experienced the power of nature during Hurricane Irma. Please make a personal emergency plan for your family before storm season begins June 1st. “We are truly honored to serve the people of DeSoto County, and stand ready to help in gray skies or blue.” Mary Kay Burns, Health Officer

The History of the John Morgan Ingraham House In 1883, the post office for a frontier settlement on Peace River was named Arcadia, and John Morgan Ingraham was born. He bought the house at 300 N. Monroe Ave. in 1919 and lived there until his death in 1980. A businessman, he represented DeSoto County for two terms in the State legislature (1944-1948). Robert Early Whidden, a cattleman, citrus grower, and businessman, had built the house in the late 1890s based on the “dog trot” design to keep the house as cool as possible. The steeply-pitched roof and high-ceiling rooms allow the heat to escape through gable vents while windows and doors provide cross ventilation. The Ingraham family fronted the south porch—which also serves as a hall—with a wooden lattice and enclosed a commode and tub in one end but left the pitcher-pump and shelf on the other. About 1906, “knob and tube” electricity was installed. However, the original house design remained essentially unchanged. In 2002, the Pipkin family donated the property to the DeSoto County Historical Society, a not-for-profit, all-volunteer organization. In 2004, Hurricane Charley wrecked the house. From 2007 to 2010, the Society received four grants for restoration totaling $158,000 from the Florida Depart-
ment of State Division of Historic Resources, and in 2012, a $40,000 grant from the Mosaic Company Foundation. The Society showcases the John Morgan Ingraham House Museum—opened in 2014— as an unaltered “Florida Cracker” residence and memorial to all early pioneer families. The museum displays period furniture and furnishings--some of which belonged to the Ingraham family--as well as exhibits about Arcadia and DeSoto County. Adjacent to his home, Ingraham built a “Seed House” store. A replica now houses the Howard and Velma Melton Historical Research Library. In 2008, the Society had purchased the extensive collection of Howard Melton, an amateur local historian and author. In 2011, the Society raised funds and constructed the Ingraham Seed House, and in 2012, the Historical Research Library opened to the public. Dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of DeSoto County for future generations, the Society celebrates the county’s history and heritage during an annual Pioneer Day festival on the third Saturday in March in DeSoto Veterans Memorial Park (on State Road 70 just west of Arcadia). Family run business continues to blossom Question: Tell us about Joshua Citrus, Inc. Answer: Everything is picked by hand here at Joshua Citrus, Inc. All Florida citrus is picked by hand. The pickers will pick into white, fresh fruit bins, then it is picked up by a loader that is called a “Grove Goat.” The bins are stacked on the back of a flatbed trailer, then taken to our making-house here at Joshua Citrus, Inc. We will then, wash, wax and sort the fruit into different sizes and then determine where it goes from there. The wax we use is a natural plant-based wax that will help prolong the shelf life of the orange for a little longer. Q: Share fun facts about orange trees that we may not know. A: Most types of orange trees only put on one crop a year. They blossom in March/April. The Valencia orange has this year’s crop and next year’s crop on the tree at the same time. It blossoms the same time it is ready to pick. Q: Groves have a positive impact on the environment? A: Citrus groves have a positive impact on our environment and ecosystem. The groves provide homes for a multitude of native animals such as deer, turkey,
alligators, rabbits, panthers and many other birds and critters. Our citrus business is a little different from others here in Florida. We are one of the only farms that lets the public come and visit our place and see a farm in operation during the season. The majority of our fruit is picked for “fresh fruit,” fresh fruit being what you take home with you in your hand, like what you buy from the grocery store or what you buy here at our grovestand. We do not sell to grocery stores, though, we only sell everything retail at our grovestand or though gift orders. We grow, pack, and ship all of our own citrus from right here on our farm.

A Brief History of DeSoto County

2018 DeSoto Chamber of Commerce Members’ & Visitors’ Guide | 23 According to tradition, the county’s first citrus grove was planted in the Bunker community. Most citrus was sold fresh before the invention of juice concentrate, and packing houses operated in every community. Arcadia also had a cannery for fruit and juices. In 1901, Arcadia reincorporated as a city, and the Arcadia Electric Light, Ice, and Telephone Company was founded. In 2009, Barack Obama was the first sitting president to visit DeSoto County and tour the state’s largest solar-generating power plant. On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 30, 1905, fire destroyed downtown Arcadia: 43 wood buildings and contents worth $250,000. Three brick structures (which remain) survived, and all future construction decreed to be brick or block. In Nocatee, W. G. Welles founded the King Lumber Company in 1886, and the Nocatee Crate Mill in 1913. Later, it became the Nocatee-Manatee Crate Mill and closed in 1953. From 1958 to 1971, Gulf Naval Stores (aka the “Stump Plant”) processed pine stumps into turpentine and “naval stores” in Nocatee. Established in 1914, the Dixie Highway was built to connect the midwest to the south, and in 1917, it was routed through downtown Arcadia. Later, it became U.S. Highway
17 and was completely four-landed in 2017. During the Great Depression, Arcadia built a municipal airport with Federal Emergency Relief Act (FERA) funds. FERA also funded a beef cannery at the Florida Baptist Children’s Home (located in Arcadia from 1903 to 1948). The Works Progress Administration (WPA) constructed the post office in 1937 (complete with WPA artwork) and converted an old school into a cafeteria/gymnasium. In 1960, Hurricane Donna toppled the decorative arches and urns from the Plaza Hotel, the only remaining 1920s-era hotel. A direct strike from Hurricane Charley in 2004 caused extensive damage and from Hurricane Irma in 2017 disastrous flooding. In 1984, the Arcadia Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1985, Arcadia became a Main Street City. Revitalization of downtown began in time for the City and County’s centennials. The DeSoto County Historical Society was founded to assist in that celebration, and continues to preserve and promote the history of DeSoto County for future generations. Since 2005, the Society celebrates the county’s history and heritage during an annual Pioneer Day festival held on the third Saturday in March.
