GIRLS TENNIS By Lisa Branno Penwell

Girls Tennis Coach The tennis team wrapped up our season yesterday at the district tournament. We placed 4th in the district (behind Fort Myers, Venice, and N. Ft. Myers, but ahead of Charlotte, Riverdale, and Ida Baker). Our overall record was 7-3 for the season. We had our top four singles players advance to the district semi-finals; our #2 doubles team also advanced to the semi-finals. It was our best season in the four years that I’ve been coaching, especially with wins over our county rivals Charlotte and Lemon Bay!

GIRLS LACROSSE By Michelle Williamson

Girls Lacrosse Coach In a way, this season was a new beginning for Port Charlotte girls lacrosse—a new coach came to the program and 7 new players, who had never even picked up a stick before 2018, joined the team. Although the win-loss record (2-10) doesn’t reflect it, the team learned quickly and surprised its opponents with their skill, tenacity and huge heart. Our fielders put on a good show for us this season. The high scorer was Brooke Ollerenshaw with 23 goals, followed closely by Hannah Bruglio with more than 17 goals. Our top assisters were Leah Hopper and Brook Ollerenshaw. The groundball queen at PCHS is Leah Hopper with 67, and her royal court is Brooke Ollerenshaw with 41, and Hannah Bruglio and Faith Hyde with 23 each. In goal, we couldn’t have asked for more. Megan Flanagan rocked with an average .521 save percentage. She hit her best TWO nights at 70%. Remove the first two games, where everyone was learning how to play and shaking off the cobwebs, and she jumps to an average .621 save percentage. Not too shabby! She also played as a fielder for us this year, earning her first goal ever. Our backup goalies, Adrianna “AJ” Ottaway and Kylie Kaufman, did well for their first times in net. AJ Ottaway played in 2 games and had a save percentage of .346. Then, Kylie Kaufman took over the backup spot and did a great job earning a .470 save percentage. Megan did an awesome job helping train them and Kylie is looking forward to being a brick wall next season.

This year’s awards recipients are:

Most Improved player Every player improves. Every week, the teams and individuals get better. Picking one player can be difficult, but most players and coaches can agree that one eventually does stand out as making the biggest leaps in the shortest amount of time, both in skills and understanding of the game. This year’s MIP is Shaelyn Taylor. Coach’s Award Every team hopes to have a player that embodies the spirit of the game and exemplifies that team’s goals. Someone who works harder than everyone else. She leaves everything on the field. Physically and emotionally, she is all in—a 100% effort from start to finish. She inspires us--pushing herself and, by example, everyone around her. In sports, as in any endeavor where emotions run high and physical demands can be nearly overwhelming, she is strong and can carry her team on her back and keep her teammates’ heads in the game. She doesn’t quit. This year, that player is Megan Flanagan. Scholastic Award This award is to honor the player who not only gives her all on the field, but also hits the books and proves jocks are smart, too. This year that player not only proves it, but owns it with a 4.107 weighted GPA—Brooke Ollerenshaw.
