The project encourages the community, area school districts and colleges to read the same book and come together to discuss it in a variety of settings. The Age of Miracles, the New York Times bestseller by Karen Thompson Walker, focuses on a young girl who faces dramatic changes both in her world and within herself. It is a fascinating and dramatic story that asks readers to consider how environmental shifts can affect people’s daily lives. In the novel, the characters discover that the Earth’s rotation has slowed, and what seems a little strange but not remarkably significant in the beginning quickly dominates every aspect of the characters’ lives. The book is a coming of age story in a world that might end at any minute, centering on hope and whether it can prevail in a world of uncertainty. Knowledge/Human Dignity/Cultural Awareness THEY’RE FROM WHERE? Wednesday, April 11, 2018 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Emerging Technology Center (ETC), Room 109 Knowledge is key to understanding. But assumptions can be made based solely on someone’s appearance. Mistakes can be made based on the nationality or ethnic group of others based on a personal stereotype. This workshop reviews some of these assumptions and the potential damage they cause to our interpersonal relationships. One example of the learning format is a group exercise where participants assume nationalities and ethnicities of public figures. This exercise is sure to invoke the response “they are from where?” Presenter: Gustavo Amaya, MPA, WKCTC Adult Education Specialist gustavo.amaya@kctcs.edu, (270) 534-3362
