2D and Graphic Design Building GRAND OPENING
March 31, 2016
Paducah School of Art and Design Kentucky Community & Technical college System
Paducah School of Art and Design: A Dream Fulfilled for clay, wood working, welding and metal fabrication, as well as a foundry for bronze casting. The Sculpture Building opened in the fall of 2014.
As a partner in Paducah’s creative economy, West Kentucky Community and Technical College served as a catalyst for the region by opening the Paducah School of Art and Design (PSAD) in 2008 to stimulate tourism and the local economy.
After opening PSAD in temporary studios located in downtown Paducah, WKCTC began renovation of the former Madison Hall to become PSAD’s Ceramics and Small Metals Building. The building is home to ceramics, metals, jewelry-making and 3D design classes.

The opening of the 2D and Graphic Design Building completes the final phase of PSAD’s three-building LowerTown campus.
With the revitalization of LowerTown Paducah, Western Kentucky is poised to become one of the Commonwealth’s premiere examples of the new creative economy. In 2010, WKCTC became the first community and technical college in Kentucky to offer an Associate in Fine Arts degree.
With more than 300 students currently enrolled in classes, PSAD’s enrollment has steadily increased since its inception. By nurturing a growing student body and attracting nationally recognized artists to workshops, the college will position the region to experience a renaissance rich with culture, community and economic development.
In the spring of 2013, WKCTC began the second phase of PSAD expansion with the construction of a Sculpture Building. The 7,000 square foot building, adjacent to the Ceramic and Small Metals Building, houses studios

The 2D and Graphic Design Building The two-story, brick building located at 905 Harrison Street in Paducah, formerly known as the Kitchens Inc. Building, was once a buggy manufacturing building and later used to build batteries before it became a cabinet making shop. The 32,228-square-foot building was donated by the City of Paducah to West Kentucky Community and Technical College on October 31, 2007. As part of WKCTC’s Paducah School of Art and Design campus, the building now houses classrooms and studios for painting, drawing, 2D design, photography, visual communications and multimedia as well as a recording room, an art gallery, and a cafe. WKCTC was determined to capture and preserve the historic essence of the building by saving the original flooring and wood timbers, that are now being used in the first floor art gallery and part of the corridors on the first floor. The saved materials are also being used on the donor wall area, the benches in the corridors, the wood slats in the second floor lecture hall, and the interior window seals. Two concrete block rooms on the first floor go all the way through the second floor to the roof in order to provide more strength to the building in case of an earthquake. One of the old sliding wooden doors from the first floor now hangs off of the main corridor on the first floor.
Bill Ford Art Gallery The art gallery on the first floor of Paducah School of Art and Design’s 2D and Graphic Design Building is named in honor of Paducah artist Bill Ford.

Chef Jessi Donaldson
Loving What You Do; Doing What You Love Jessi Donaldson was working for a law firm in Bowling Green on her way to a career in social work when she suddenly realized something was missing in her life. At the time, Donaldson, a 2008 Western Kentucky University graduate, was spending most of her free time cooking, looking for new creative ways to cook, and traveling to as many different restaurants she could find. “My job was just a job,” Donaldson recalled, “and that wasn’t cutting it for me.” A Paducah Tilghman High School graduate, Donaldson took a leap of faith, moved back to Paducah and enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at West Kentucky Community and Technical College. In 2011, she completed an associate in applied science degree in culinary arts with high distinction. Today, she is the executive chef at

the Kitchens Café in the 2D and Graphic Design Building and happy to be doing something she loves. “I love LowerTown,” Donaldson said, “and am very excited to be a part of this community, and bringing our services to it. I think it is going to be a great fit.” Kitchens Café, opened March 28, 2016 in what was once a boiler room in the former Kitchens Inc. building, now the 2D and Graphic Design Building at Paducah School of Art and Design. The old chimney smokestack as well as the front part of the boiler face plate have been preserved and hang in the café. An American Culinary Federation Education Foundation (ACFEF) certified culinarian, Donaldson has been a Sous Chef at Artisan Kitchen, an intern at Cynthia’s Ristoranté and

an executive chef at Midtown Market. “Some of my favorite memories include gathering around the table with friends and family. Food is an integral part of that,” Donaldson said. “In serving the public, we get to be a part of those experiences. So, it isn’t just about serving food; it is about serving good food that families and friends can gather around and enjoy.” Kitchens Café will be open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, visit kitchenscafe.com or follow us on Facebook and Instagram.
