Editor’s Note My favorite time of year is back – the annual Parade of Homes! I have always been astounded by the diversity of homes that the Chippewa Valley Home Builders Association member’s present our community. This year is no different! For a sneak preview of this year’s entries see pages 44-75. The Chippewa Valley Parade of Homes is one of those events that naturally creates excitement…whether you are considering building your own home or working on a remodeling project, the Parade give people the opportunity to reflect on their own living spaces. This event is about possibilities. This is why the Parade of Homes is so wonderful. The art of the possible. The mental construction of one’s dream home put firm in front of one’s eyes. Like many attendees, when I walk through the homes I imagine how my family would live in the featured spaces. I look at the new trends and consider upgrading my life…What would bring more efficiency to my day; How can I relax more when I am home; Is there a way to worry less? The answer is “yes,” and the Chippewa Valley Parade of Homes shows you how. Travel through the homes with a notebook in hand and make your wishlist…because today’s dreams can become tomorrow’s realities.

So... Why should you choose to plant Natives in your yard? Natives save energy! They have evolved and adapted to local conditions for thousands of years. They are vigorous and hardy, so they can survive our winters and do not need fertilizing and watering during the summer. They are the original “low maintenance” plant! They are great for the children! Native plantings can give a safe place for children to play outside and learn about nature. A much better option than playing video games all day. Natives attract wildlife! Native plantings are the natural habitat for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. From their flowers to their dense cover, all kinds of wildlife are attracted to the plantings. Great for the bird watcher in the family or the child learning about nature. You can use them anywhere! Because they grew in various areas in the past, there are specific natives suited for each location possible in your yard; sunny or shady. Nature has taken the guess work out of the equation.

Going Wild With Native Plants L Contributed by Ben Polzin, Photographs contributed by Bailey Nurseries, Inc.

ong before we were here, Wisconsin was covered in native forests and prairies with all kinds of neat native plants. These plants covered the whole state and created their own plant communities. Today, there are very few of these areas left due to the development of commercial buildings, homes, roads, and other plants being readily available.

They are cool! Native plants have all kinds of interesting and unique flowers and foliage. They vary in height, shape and texture in the landscape. Many even have great winter appeal with their bark or seed pods.

However, there is a large movement throughout the entire US to bring back native plantings on a smaller scale by creating micro communities of local native plants. More and more people are discovering the satisfaction in beauty and the benefits to the environment of landscaping their homes, schools, and businesses with native plants.

They are like a history book! Native plants have played a crucial role in many of history major events. When America was getting settled by the Europeans native plants were used as food and medicine. They have helped develop textiles, dyes, and many other domestic products. They are local! While we are busy trying to buy local in every other category of life, we often forget that native plants have local for like, forever! What a better way to shop local than natives. Also, by being local, means that they will not be invasive and get out of control.

No need to go out today and switch your yard out to completely all native plantings, but it is something to consider next time you are at your local garden center making that plant purchasing decision. Native plants may not get all the attention these days, but they still have a place in today’s landscape and deserve to be used when possible because of all there uses and unique beauty. Ben Polzin, co-owner of Down to Earth Garden Center loves to talk “plants”. The beginning of his love of plants and the outdoors started at the young age of 12. He has grown up in and around the garden center and landscaping field. He has a passion for plants and for people who love them as well. Down to Earth is a full service garden center and landscape company that loves to think outside the box and help create the lifestyle you have always wanted. Ben can be reached by email at home@dwntoearth.com.

In the world of appliances technology has been rapidly advancing in recent years. Today’s appliances are “smarter” than those of past generations. In some ways your appliances can almost think for you. Having said that, I’d like to point out a few areas where advancing technology requires a change in our thinking. I’m sure we’re all aware of the growing demand for high-efficiency appliances. In the laundry room, this has brought front-loading washers on the scene and also changed the function of the more traditional top-loading machines. Where washers of the past required 40+ gallons of water per load we’re looking at less than half that amount today. This decrease in water usage requires a similar decrease in the amount of detergent needed for one load. If you upgrade to a high efficiency machine you may notice that the wash cycle is longer than what you were accustomed to. The water-saving design of today uses just enough water

to ensure that the fabric is well-saturated. The agitation cycle no longer “beats” the clothes clean. Rather during this cycle the clothes are gently tumbled and the cycle is longer to allow adequate time for the enzymes in the soap to work on stains and odors. If you’re planning to purchase a new washer you’ll want to know that some models have special bedding, steam and cleaning cycles. As I mentioned earlier, the washer will only fill with enough water to saturate the clothes, however, if you have bulkier items, like bedding, saturation may not be as swift. Once the agitation process starts dry spot can soak up the extra moisture needed to aid soap distribution. The bedding cycle allows sensors in the machine to monitor water levels and add more water as needed. In the steam cycle a burst of steam causes the fibers in fabric to relax, helping to release tough stains. The cleaning cycle is designed to kill odor-inducing bacteria in your machine. Ask your appliance dealer for

recommendations on the amounts of soap you should use. Using too much soap will cause bacteria-attracting protein to build up in your machine causing unpleasant odors and reducing the life of your machine. If your washer does not have a cleaning cycle you should periodically clean it by adding ½ cup of bleach and running it empty on the longest cycle and hottest water settings. Modern washers have higher spin speeds which means more water is removed during the spin cycle cutting dryer time. Switching to a new, high-efficiency washer may save up to $40 per month on your energy bill. Like washing machines, dishwashers of today are water and energy saving. New dishwashers use less water but circulate it longer than older models. A heating element in the dishwasher raises the temperature of the water providing faster dissolving of food particles and better sanitation. If you’re thinking of up-grading your dishwasher be aware that you may experience longer wash cycles. By using a smaller pump motor manufactures have also cut energy costs in dishwashers. In the cooking sphere steam cooking is gaining popularity. Steam cooking offers you the ability to cook veggies faster while retaining many vital nutrients as well as much of their natural coloring. Cakes baked in a steam oven are fluffy, moist and melt-in-your-mouth amazing. A new steam cleaning option makes cleaning your oven a breeze. The cycle takes about 20 min. versus 2-3 hrs. for self cleaning ovens, or lots of elbow-grease if you‘ve got to clean it the old-fashioned way. To steam clean the oven you will need to add approximately 1 cup of water. The steam generated by the water softens dried on food particles and allows you to easily wipe your oven clean. It‘s no longer necessary to “kill the bird to clean the oven“. If you do have a self cleaning oven you may want to consider discontinuing your use of the cycle. Appliance dealers are seeing a significant amount of problems crop up with self-cleaning ovens. The heat used to “burn” away spills causes damage to oven components.

The real “buzz” in the cooking sphere is induction cooktops. Induction cooktops use magnetic energy to transmit heat to your cookware without actually heating the glass surface. It sounds impossible if you haven’t actually seen it done but you can literally lay a hundred dollar bill on the surface of the stove, put a pot on top of it and boil water without harming your money in any way. Induction technology offers you heat control similar to gas and easier cleanup than you ever dreamed of. In fact, if you really dread cleaning put a towel over your cooktop to catch spatters and spills and cook right through it. You will want to be aware that a magnet needs to stick to the bottom of your cookware in order for it to work on an induction top. The latest induction technology has your cook surface divided into zones rather than traditional burners. This means you can actually use the entire surface of your cooktop rather than being limited to a particular area. Last, but by no means least, is refrigeration. Sensors in modern refrigerators create zones allowing you to keep different parts of your fridge at different temperatures. You can now keep meats at cooler temperatures while giving veggies the temperature and humidity they need, this ensures maximum freshness for all types of food. Separate fans circulate air in the fridge and freezer compartments. Older model refrigerators tend to circulate air from the fridge into the freezer compartment causing foods stored

in the freezer to develop an odd taste reminiscent of the strange potpourri of scents emitted by various types of food stored together. Technology and function meet in modern refrigerators with Wi-Fi connections. You can now access AP News, Weatherbug, and Pandora Radio -from your fridge! Go online to search for recipes by ingredient, season and more - from your fridge! Create your grocery list -on your fridge, then send it to your phone. Download the whole family’s calendars -to your fridge, to allow you to coordinate schedules. Plus, there’s a handy computerized memo board that allows you to use your finger to leave messages for the rest of the family. Do you feel like you’re suffering from an information overload by now? Buying appliances can be a good-sized investment so my advice is: Go to the professionals. Find a dealer who’s been in business a number of years. Look for someone who knows what’s available and can help you make the right decision for your budget and lifestyle. Don’t forget to ask about their installation and service plan.

When you consider the style and colors for your home,

the most important thing can be your window treatments. Windows are like the eyes of your home. They can serve as a direct source of light. The amount of light can also dramatically affect your home, and you may want to control how much light comes in. Privacy and energy efficiency are other factors to consider. There are a variety of options available including mini blinds, wood blinds, pleated shades, cellular shades, draperies, roller shades, and much more. In just four easy steps, you too can have beautiful windows.

Blinded by the Light? Easy Window Dressing Tips Contributed by Sherrie Ring & Sylvia Weaver

24

Step One: Decide what you need from the window treatment. If your new purchase does not fill your basic requirements for that particular window your frustration will very likely outweigh your monetary savings. While a professional can help direct your choices; you may want to have some idea of what the main function of each window treatment will be before you seek guidance. Carefully consider what function you need from each window treatment. Privacy may be essential if your windows face highways or nearby neighbors. You may want to maximize natural lighting in areas where windows are shaded by trees or overhangs. Windows can be a heat/cold exchange point so be sure to find out what energy-efficient choices are available. Room darkening shades are a great option for bedrooms. Hard-to-reach windows may obviously cause problems. Don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations for awkward areas. If you have small children or pets don’t forget that your blinds and draperies will need to be very durable.

Step Two: Choose window treatment styles for each window. There are a variety of options available including mini blinds, wood blinds, pleated shades, cellular shades, draperies, roller shades and many more. Now is definitely a good point to seek professional guidance if you have not already done so. Have an expert help you make choices that will suit your needs in function and design. Take time to thoroughly check samples of window treatments you are considering. Try operating shades to check their function and ease of use.

Windows are like the eyes of your home.

Step Three: Add texture and color. Selecting fabrics and colors is the fun part. Textures used in home décor add dimension to a room’s appearance. Lively surfaces with irregular textures and structured elements lend an aura of natural playfulness to a room. Remember that light filtering shades will appear lighter during the day and darker at night. Also colors will look different in the store versus your home. If possible have an expert bring color and design samples to your home so you can get a better feel for how things will actually appear. Choosing a color scheme can be daunting since tastes and opinions vary greatly. Here are some fun facts that may help you. Bright colors add zest to your living space. Fashion savvy designers are not shying away from bright accents as proven by the top color choice for 2012, Tango Tangerine. This radiant red-orange color promotes optimism, strength, vitality and encouragement. Traditional yet luxurious, red is the most powerful color in a designer’s palette. Purple, the color of kings, symbolizes creativity and spirituality. This rich color holds an aura of regal opulence. Neutral colors like beige and ivory produce a feeling of serenity. Create your own Nirvana with soft, subtle hues of grey, taupe and cream combined with interesting layers of texture. Everything old is new again as we continue the search for serenity. Neutral hues run the gamut of emotion from relaxing and secure to casual and chic. A cusp color, grey, incorporates serenity with chic sophistication. Blue is yet another color whose affect is serene and calming. An added benefit is its tendency to make spaces appear larger than they actually are. One more color that helps set the mood for serenity; brown speaks warmth, stability, comfort and dependability. Add a touch of luxury and glamour to a room by choosing window treatments with a metallic finish. The touch of gloss offered by metallic finishes is sure to spice up the mundane. If you’re interested in “Going Green” be sure to ask a professional in the window treatment field about bamboo shades and other environmentally friendly products.

too, can dress your “ You windows for success. ” Step Four: Get a quote. Whether you’re building a new home or working on a remodeling project it is wise to figure window treatments into your budget. Budgeting for window treatments will help to insure a window treatment plan that ensures privacy, precise light control, energy efficiency, and UV protection for your furnishings. Ask for a quote that shows product names and prices. Find out about installations rates or, if you plan to do your own installing, make sure that is figured in the pricing. Seeking professional guidance and following these four simple steps should help you to achieve functional yet stylish window treatments. You too, can dress your windows for success. Southern Oak Window Fashions has served the Chippewa Valley for over two decades, offering Hunter Douglas high quality at fair prices with exceptional service. hey say that true craftsmanship is in the details and this home is filled with the power and intrigue of fine details around every corner. From the custom, hand-carved front door featuring the family dogs, all the way down to the twinkling stars in the ceiling of the home theatre, this home is a true testament to the power of details and how they can make any home come to life. Tucked away in rural, western Wisconsin, this hideaway offers country living at its finest. Hardwood floors, stone fixtures and vaulted wood beamed ceilings bring the majesty of the great outdoors into a relaxing home environment. It’s comfortably nestled on acres of private, beautiful, rolling hills. And to enjoy the view, it features expansive outdoor decks that would leave any nature lover energized. So, what makes this home so special? It’s the details that flourish throughout – the result of custom work that took a full year to plan and three years to come to fruition. To say that it was a large task is an understatement, but the team from Reiter Construction in Eau Claire made it their goal to make sure that no stone was unturned when it comes to custom details. As evidence, they literally did not leave a single stone unturned. This log home features oversized stones throughout that were found on the property, harvested and cut precisely to fit inside the house. They create remarkable views around every corner. Take, for instance, the 13,000-pound stone that forms the base of the two-story fireplace on the main level. It was found not far from where it sits now. However, that’s not to be outdone by the other sedimentary rocks and complimentary stonework on the opposite side of the room. They create beautiful mantles for wild animal mounts from across the world.

T

hey were also found locally and had to be placed with the help of a crane before the roof could be completed. This is an example of some very carefully choreographed construction that leaves a lasting impression. However, rocks aren’t the only things that were re-purposed to become extravagant focal points. Even the wood-paneled walls throughout the home were milled from trees that were found on the original property. Combine that with wideplank floors made from reclaimed, white oak timbers and you have a masterpiece on your hands that is unmatched. The master bedroom is a work of art in and of itself. It features a full, open concept vanity and bathroom and is complete with his and hers, full, walk-in closets. There’s even a dumbwaiter on hand; so, sending up baskets of folded clothes from the laundry room doesn’t interfere with the natural serenity of this room. Outside of the main living quarters, you’ll find a custom movie theater and custom designed old west saloon styled bar featuring antique mirrors. The theater itself seats 10 and includes a ceiling that may have you wanting to skip the movie altogether. This captivating ceiling is covered with a dramatic print of the Witch Head Nebula and features LED, twinkling stars. The bar, conveniently located right outside the theater curtains, not only features antique mirrors, but a variety of unique treatments. The bar itself includes the family’s hunting memorabilia encased in a protective, acrylic surface. Add in the custom fireplace (again, featuring a mantle made from a butternut tree branch found on the property) and you have a place to entertain that has no shortage of conversation pieces. Outside the home lie fields of wildflowers and a pond fed by a stone waterfall that will be completed in the upcoming summer. Walkways around the home feature, again, stone stairs that were found on the property and custom cut to fit their surroundings.

ifferent from our open concept home of last year, this house was designed to the customers’ specifications. When our client approached us about a design, they wanted to incorporate many of the features that they loved in their existing home. As you tour the home, you will notice the smaller design of the rooms and that each has its own designated purpose. A custom rustic cherry trim package with matching cabinetry promote a formal, yet relaxed atmosphere. The home is a unique combination of a formal colonial style mixed with extensive warm wood features. Some of the items we incorporated from the clients’ existing home are wood ceiling beams, a built in hutch, and extensive use of pocket doors allowing each room to be closed off from the others to create cozy living spaces. A finished basement rounds off the package. We invite you to come and see another truly custom home.
