Living the Green Life WHAT YOUR LAWN REALLY NEEDS

By Ross and Hanna Pudenz Photography by Pudenz Irrigation/Grasscapes Ever look at your yard and wonder, should I put down more fertilizer, do I need to water more or less, am I mowing short enough? Those are questions many homeowners ask themselves every year. Many times you leave it as just that, a question in your mind. Other times you want to do something about it, so you go turn the water on or spread a little more fertilizer. The truth is when it comes to your yard more is rarely better. Getting your lawn to grow lush and green is not a complicated process, but it does take time. Your lawn, like any living thing needs attention, but with the proper amount of water and fertilizer, your lawn can be something you are proud to mow and let your neighbors stare at. A healthy lawn with a strong root system needs less water, less fertilizer and creates a natural weed barrier.

6

WATER Grass uses water for three reasons; to transport fertilizers from the root to the rest of the plant, to control physical shape of the plant, and to control leaf temperature. In order to perform these tasks, there must be a healthy root system. The objective to watering your lawn is to supply just the right amount of water at just the right time. The amount of water needed each week is based on the evapotranspiration (ET) rate of the plant. This rate is the total of the water lost and water used by the plant. The ET rate is determined by the plant species, weather, and quality of water. Today’s smart irrigation controllers are able to use that information and automatically adjust watering. The more developed and extensive the root systems in a yard, the more efficiently the roots use the moisture in the soil. Overwatering will create shallow roots, which create weak and sparse grass. Often times the “dry” spot you see in your yard is actually the result of overwatering. Using the proper amount of water will require your grass to need less fertilizer inputs, reduce the susceptibility to diseases and insects. Infrequent irrigation for longer periods of time allows the water to reach a depth of 4 to 6 inches. This encourages deep root growth and healthy turf able to handle periods of drought.

7

“An uneven balance of fertilizer can do more harm than good!”

FERTILIZER You know your grass needs fertilizer, so every spring you go the local store, purchase the same amount of fertilizer that you got last year, put it in your spreader and spread until it is gone. A few weeks go by and you notice the grass isn’t as green as you would like, so you add a little more. Or worse yet, you notice brown spots, where the fertilizer “burned” the grass. Fertilizers should be used as needed, not because you do it every year at the same time. Before you begin any lawn fertilizing schedule, consider the makeup of your soil. Grass needs phosphorus, potassium, and nitrogen. Testing your soil helps you determine how much of each mineral your lawn really needs. An uneven balance of fertilizer can do more harm than good! Another consideration for a good lawn fertilizing schedule is the time of year. Depending upon your location, fertilizer might be best applied during the cooler months. Fertilizing in the fall, when heat and drought tolerance is a bit better, can help deep root systems grow.

8

MOWING The best weed control is a dense turf canopy or dense grass. Tall grass does not mean dense. Creating a dense lawn allows you to use less water, because it restricts water evaporation and it restricts the growth of weeds because they get “choked” off by the thriving grass. How do you get a dense lawn, easy the right amount of water, fertilizer and mow your grass properly. Make sure your blades are always sharp so the grass blades are getting cut and not ripped and mow your grass to a height of 2”-3”. As a rule of thumb, don’t cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time. This rule of thumb can help determine how often you should mow. For example, if you are mowing at a height of 2” and your lawn grows an inch a week, then you would mow once a week, but if it grows an inch every 3 days, then you have to mow every three days. Mowing grass at the proper height increases the yards ability to combat weeds. Grass when mowed too short is less dense and weakens the roots system, in contrast a healthy, thick lawn, mowed at a proper height helps prevent weeds from establishing themselves. Creating a lush green lawn is simple, all you have to do is give your grass the water and fertilizer it needs, without over doing it, then keep it mowed and trimmed on a consistent basis. While the concepts are simple, finding the time to do it may be more difficult. If that is the case you can always call a professional lawn care company (check online at cvhomebuilders.com) and they can help you make your lawn the envy of your neighborhood. The kitchen has truly become the focal point of the home. Kitchens have become multi-purposes zones—they are the family gathering space, entertaining hubs, technology zones, and sometimes they even serve as cooking areas. However, one thing is always the same—the countertop takes center stage. Nothing defines your kitchen more than its countertop. And fortunately, there is a countertop that will match your personality, style, and budget. Are you low maintenance? Do you need something affordable? Are you all about first impressions? To help you figure out where to go with your kitchen, we have compiled some helpful descriptions of some of today’s popular countertop choices.

12

Ceramic Tile Tile is functional and easy to maintain and repair. This is not a common countertop – but don’t totally discount the idea! Tile is excellent for back splashes or secondary work surfaces such as islands. The key is to make sure to use tiles rated for use on floors or countertops. Never use a wall tile on a countertop – they are very thin and will crack easily. Downside: Grout can stain and pick up mildew. This can be avoided by sealing the grout to minimize staining or opt for darker colors. Price Range: $4 to $80 per square foot installed

Laminate It’s inexpensive, easy to install and available in hundreds of colors and patterns. Laminate is glued to plywood or particle board and consists of layers of paper and plastic fused under high heat and pressure. Laminate resists stains, heat and impact; but you can’t cut on it or use abrasive cleaners. Laminate can survive the toughest kitchens. There are two basic types of laminates 1/16th inch thick general purpose and 1/32 inch vertical grade. Only general purpose laminate is suitable for countertops. Vertical grade is used for back splashes and cabinet doors. Downside: Damage can not be repaired, there are visible seams, and edge seams show as dark line. Brand Names: WilsonArt and Formica. Price Range: $8 -$25 per square foot installed

Wood The traditional butcher block is relatively inexpensive and easy to install and repair. In addition, wood is the only countertop material recommended for cutting, slicing and chopping. A cook’s favorite! Downside: Unfortunately, there are downsides. Wood is vulnerable to water, cuts, burns and scratches. It also requires thorough cleaning and needs regular treating with mineral oil or beeswax. Polyurethane seals can protect a word counter for a few years, however many owners prefer to draw out the natural beauty and warmth of wood with a less glossy mineral oil finish. Maintaining an oiled surface will require a reapplication every four to six weeks.. Price Range: $16 - $40 per square foot installed

Engineered Stone These materials are made primarily of quartz combined with resins and pigments. Engineered stone can look like granite but has a more uniform appearance. The engineered stone provides a virtually nonporous, impenetrable surface that is more resistant to stains. It’s resistant to stains, heat and abrasion. This countertop will remain looking as good as the day it was installed. Engineered stone countertops are strong, durable and easy to maintain. There is no need to seal and can be easily cleaned with soap and water. Downside: Doesn’t withstand impact and will show seams. Brand names include: Cambria & Silestone. Price Range: Is on par for mid-level granite. $75 and up per square foot installed

13

Granite The always popular granite is virtually indestructible, and (if cleaned up quickly) won’t stain. Clean up is easy. Granite is second in hardness only to diamonds. Durability is one of the compelling reasons for choosing granite. It is not affected by extremes in temperatures and under normal conditions, granite resists etching by knives, household acids and kitchenware. Granite offers tons of personality and works great with natural daylight to bring out the true beauty and offers plenty of colors to select from. With innovative advancements in quarrying and fabrication technology sealing is now done in done in the polishing process. Granite is impregnated inside the material with an apoxy resin and ground down and polished. The sealer prevents staining and resists liquids. Check with your granite supplier if your granite was sealed. Downside: If you desire an under-mount sink there will be additional charges for cutting and polishing edges. Granite does have visible seams. Price Range: $50 - $400 per square foot installed

14

Concrete Sounds harsh, but is a great option for countertops. Concrete closely resembles slabs of natural stone, and are becoming very poplar. Fabricators offer pre-cast counters that are made in a workshop and delivered, fully cured and finished. Pre-cast concrete countertops are typically 1-1/2 thick and available in slabs up to 10 feet long. A variety of colors can be achieved by adding pigments to the concrete during mixing. Once cured, the slabs are honed and sealed to prevent staining. Cracking is always a concern with concrete, and fabricators often use wire mesh, metal rebar or fiberglass fiver to strengthen the countertops. Downside: There is maintenance - once every couple of months an application of special beeswax solution should be applied to the countertop. Price Range: $85 - $100 per square foot installed

15

16

Soapstone A natural stone that has a characteristic patina; darker coloring, depressions, pits and blotches. This option provides your home with a traditional rustic look. Color choices include a dark greenish-black or light green-gray. It is composed of talc so it is soft and smooth to the touch. Soapstone can also be fabricated into sinks to match the countertop. Downside: This product is high maintenance because it is porous and must be sealed with mineral oil to reduce staining. Soapstone also starches easily. Price Range: $100-$150 per square foot installed

Slate This natural stone is extremely dense and comes in five colors: green, red, gray, purple and black. With a soft matte sheen, homeowners can create a wet look by rubbing the slate with lemon oil. This material is non-porous and virtually maintenance free. While slate is relatively soft and scratches, it can easily be removed with a damp sponge or buffed out with steel wool. Downside: Has a naturally uneven surface. Also, if you leave the corners straight, they are more prone to chipping. This material, being brittle, cracks easily. Price Range: $100 - $200 per square foot installed

Solid Surface

Need more direction? The Chippewa Valley Home Builders Association has qualified members that offer the experience and professionalism in assisting you with your material choice. Visit our website at: www.cvhomebuilders.com

This is a great marble or granite look a-like. The material is made up of resins and mineral filler (100% acrylic,100% polyester or a combination of both). It comes in dozens of colors and patterns. Solid surface material has virtually invisible seams and can have integral sinks and back splashes. The material is also highly resistant to stains and scratches and completely renewable and repairable. Scratches and burns can be sanded out, deep gouges can be filled. In addition, solid surface material is easy to clean and provides a warranty. The design possibilities are virtually limitless. From intricate inlays & custom back splashes, to elegant edge treatments and colorful pinstripping, if you can dream it there’s a good chance the fabricator can create it. Brand Names: Avonite or Corian. Price Range: $60-$200 per square foot Before deciding on your kitchen countertop there are many things you need to keep in mind. Initially the appearance will get you. But take your time and consider the use and cost. All these factors are to be considered before making a final decision.

Window Sill Flower Box Made Easy BY TIMOTHY BETTS PHOTOGRAPHY BY AESTHETIC OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY A window sill planter box used to be a common feature on American homes, both urban and rural, but now they are unjustly scarce. Once the playing field of violets and gardenias, parsley and chives, the noble window sill planter has become far too rare. As an architectural image, they evoke nostalgic images of the farm house, and they add a splash of color and greenery that spark the curb appeal of any home. For those of us who cook, they add the opportunity of growing garden fresh herbs that don’t rot in the refrigerator. Perhaps one justifiable reason for their demise was the fact that many of them were poorly constructed, leaked and dripped dirt down the face of your siding. Eventually, left to disrepair, they rotted the siding beneath them and then the walls supporting them. But shall we blame the box, or the carpenter who constructed it? Sure, those old timers didn’t have the same tooling and supplies we do today, but a good carpenter never blames his tools. To that end, let me revisit this charming and practical architectural feature. The primary problem with the box is that it must pitch away from the house and not allow water to get behind it or on top of it. Further, when watering your planter, or during a rain, you don’t want the excess water to wash soil onto your siding. To accomplish this, we need to tilt the bottom of the box so that water runs to the outside and then install drain tubes that let the water out of the planter away from the siding. No, the soil splashing problem will probably never be completely mitigated during a heavy rain, but at least it will be tamed. To prevent water from getting behind the planter box, flashing is added at the top. A piece of roofing drip-edge works great. Cleats are added to the back of the planter box. These provide air circulation between the siding and the planter, and they position the planter plumb and protruding slightly beyond the window sill.

ENTER TO WIN! Find the flower box at one of our Parade Homes. Register your answer at cvhomebuilders.com to win the flower box!

To construct your planter box, first visit www.cvhomebuilders.com to download the CAD drawings. These drawings are created using Google’s SketchUp which can be freely downloaded at http://sketchup.google.com. Once in SketchUp, you can flip and rotate the drawing and use the “tape measure” tool to pull all the dimensions you will need. The box is fairly simple, but to increase its strength and lifespan, dado cuts are used to join the sides, ends and bottom. To protect the planter box, we first choose a rot resistant wood, such as cedar, and pick good stock free of knots. Knots contain checking, or small cracks, that allow water in during the winter to expand and contract, and eventually cause the rot of the wood. Prime or stain all pieces on all sides, edges and ends prior to assembly. To seal the planter box, we use a high quality, silicone based adhesive caulk inside the dado and butt joints, and then nail the box together using stainless steel fasteners. A final bead of caulk around all inside joints, putty the nail holes, and your planter box is ready for a final coat of stain or paint. Installation is relatively simple. First examine the siding beneath the window where you want to install your planter. Determine the amount of standoff needed to position your planter plumb and beyond the end of the window sill. Then, determine the size of the cleats relative to the siding. Locate the cleats at the top or bottom of a piece of siding and not in the middle where the siding is weakest. Then transfer this spacing to the planter box and predrill. Mount the bottom spacers directly to the box with a short screw so that the box will hang from the top screws and rest on the bottom cleats. The upper spacers will have a screw long enough to penetrate through the siding and into the wall sheathing. Start a screw in both holes and place a dab of caulk over the entry and exit holes. Then position the planter and drive your screws. Slide the flashing between the planter box and window sill, and you are ready to fill with potting soil.
