Mission Statement MOTHER McAULEY LIBERAL ARTS HIGH SCHOOL is a Catholic educational community committed to providing a quality secondary education for young women. In the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy and their foundress, Catherine McAuley, we prepare students to live in a complex, dynamic society by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively, respond compassionately to the needs of their community and assume roles of Christian leadership. In partnership with parents, we empower young women to acknowledge their giftedness and to make decisions with a welldeveloped moral conscience. We foster an appreciation of the diversity of the global community and a quest for knowledge and excellence as lifelong goals.

President’s Message “How is Mother McAuley doing?” It is the question we hear time and time again from alumnae, donors, former parents and community members. McAuley is doing well. In fact, it is doing very well. The work of the Sisters of Mercy and strong operations today have created not just a legacy, but a foundation for success. We are buoyed by the support of our McAuley family and a community who believe in our mission and embrace our heritage of empowering the young women entrusted to us. Improvements to our campus and program have contributed to greater donor and alumnae engagement, evidenced by our lengthy Honor Roll of Donors. Simply put, we would not be able to do what we do without the support of our generous alumnae, donors, community members and friends. Thank you! The first four years of my tenure have passed in the blink of an eye, yet forged an expansive vision of what is possible in the life of McAuley students. We live in an era when change and transition seem the only constant, challenging us to be bold and nimble in preparing students for paths not yet worn. The realities of the second decade of this millennium inform the visions that ground our current strategic initiatives. The strength of our faculty and school leadership, in addition to our strong financial health, drive us to launch purposeful, globally-engaged, mercy-filled young women on paths of excellence. Our students want to be actively involved in making a substantial contribution to their communities and to the wider world. It is our duty to encourage and promote their ambition through word and action. Now is our time to support them with steadfast and generous investments in infrastructure, academic programs, faculty development, scholarships, and long-term financial stability so that they can enjoy the same opportunities (and more!) as the more than 26,000 who have come before them. It is in the spirit of Mercy that our McAuley community must continue to honor our storied past, yet remain intently focused on the future of our school, our communities, and our world. We remain a solid investment for those who believe in the lifetime advantage of a Mother McAuley education and remain committed to forging relationships that not only sustain our mission, but help it flourish. Thank you for your faithful generosity, deep passion for Mother McAuley and your willingness to celebrate its successful past and bright future. In Mercy,

Mary Acker Klingenberger ‘75 President

From the Advancement Office Dear Friends of McAuley, Often when we talk with our alumnae, they relate how their McAuley friendships are one of the greatest rewards from their high school days. They retell how McAuley girls challenge each other, enrich and support each other. Our current students speak of these special and unique friendships too. Friendships that only develop in an allgirls’ environment. These young women pray together, learn and study together, compete together, perform and create together. And let’s not forget the fun! The absolute laughter and joy that rings in the dining hall and hallways. The belly laughs and silliness that are contagious and so free and necessary. A look, a word or movement from a true friend, a good friend, can make problems disappear and worries vanish. Interestingly enough, this is exactly how I think of you, our donors. For your support provides the greatest friendship. You aid in our ability to educate young women of purpose, confidence, accomplishment and, yes, friendship. Your gifts signify your belief in our mission and our purpose. When you give to Mother McAuley, you are saying that Catholic education for young women matters and is deserving. If you are receiving this annual report it is because you have impacted our school greatly with your financial support. We are better because you cared and you gave. It’s never the amount of your gift that is important, but rather the power of that giving. We want to share and show you what your friendship has done and how it has impacted our students to help them find their gifts. Our students are alive and flourishing in their school work, faith, sports and activities, and friendships. You make that happen! Your belief in us, your friendship, is the greatest gift. It provides us the means but also the inspiration to continue our important mission in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy, to prepare students to live in a complex, dynamic society by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively, respond compassionately to the needs of their community and assume roles of Christian leadership. Thank you for your friendship and continued support. Sincerely,

Carey Temple Harrington ‘86 Vice President for Institutional Advancement

Wait, I Can’t Wear My Kilt and Docs in College? By KRISTYNA KRESIC ‘16

For four years, I woke up to a kilt and polo on my floor that I picked up and put on without even opening my eyes. For four years, school events did not require looking nice. For four years, I walked around the halls with the girls who shaped me into the person I am today, and in four years, I grew up and found myself. In elementary school, we started off as caterpillars, slowly inching our way around and trying to figure out how we are supposed to grow up. During the transition to high school, we began to figure out how to mature. Soon we prepared for the next stage of our lives. We wrapped ourselves in cocoons that kept us safe and warm when we were too afraid to venture outside of our comfort zones. For some people, it could take months to grow out of that cocoon, and for others, it may have taken years. All I know is that the single-gender education I received helped me not only grow out of that cocoon, but it helped me spread my wings and open my eyes unto the world as a proud, confident woman ready to take on anything life decides to throw at her.

Woman writes: Single-gender education is not single-minded education. 6 | ANNUAL REPORT 2015 – 2016

When I was a freshman in 2012, I entered the doors as an apprehensive student who was not sure about her high school decision. Being the only student from my elementary school that attended my high school, the largest all-girls private high school in the United States, I was very uncomfortable in my new environment. I soon grew very skeptical of myself for this decision only because I was in this cocoon that was too warm for me to venture out of. One day that year, a girl in my biology class came up to me and introduced herself. Little did I know that this girl would not only begin to break down my walls, but also would change my life forever. Over the course of our four years we would become best friends.

We pulled each other out of our safe havens and shaped each other into the people we are today. A single-gender private high school like the one I went to is a place where there are limited stereotypes and a place where anyone can find her voice. It helps foster success not only in high school, but also in the future. This is not to say that coeducational high schools do not prepare their students to succeed at a university, because they do. But there is something different about the education received at single-gender institutions. It not only stems from not having to worry about how you look in front of members of the opposite sex, but so much more. At single-gender institutions, you learn to be your own person and do not have to worry about fitting the mold of who someone else wants you to be. Your education makes you content with who you are and allows you to open up and explore new places with a sense of comfort. You are never afraid to raise your hand. You know that no one will laugh or make a comment about something you say, even if your answer is wrong or is part of the unpopular opinion. Eventually you learn that you learn from your mistakes and your teachers and peers are there to help you through them and make you a better student and an all-around better person. I can say without a doubt in my mind that my single-gender education was the perfect choice for me. I would hear girls from coed schools in my neighborhood talking about the constant drama that would surround their lives in their schools. In my four years at my single-gender high school, I had only experienced one bout of drama that lasted a mere day. That comes out to approximately 719 days of high school that I experienced drama-free. This was

not just me. Of course, when you fill a building with hormonal teenage girls, there is bound to be some sort of drama, but not as much as one would expect. Many girls would find the drama not worth their time because we were in that building for a specific purpose, to change, grow and develop into mature young ladies ready to face the world. During senior year, each student had the option to attend a retreat called Kairos. On this three-day retreat, your eyes are opened not only to who you are yourself but who your peers are. I always knew I belonged at my high school, but it was not until Kairos that I knew exactly why. I was not only there to share my story, but I was there to help others through theirs. I was there to be a light in the darkness for anyone who needed it. I was there to be living proof to my peers that the sun will rise and everything will be alright. It was through Kairos that my senior class united as one. The administration, faculty and staff were not wrong when they constantly pointed out that we were a class like no other. We shared a strong bond that was completely unbreakable. My single-gender education taught me that every person has their place. Not only women, but men as well. Whether that be in the theatre wing, out on the court or field, in the classroom or in the fan section, everyone belongs somewhere and everyone is a someone. My single-gender education not only prepared me for all the obstacles I will face in my life, but it also helped me and will continue to help me call Columbia home. Global Exposure Mother McAuley World Language Department faculty member Mrs. Nina Munizzi Lesch ‘75, received national recognition for successfully integrating global perspectives and exchanges into her classrooms. Lesch was among 50 teachers in 27 states who were awarded a professional development grant by the Institute of International Education (IIE) and American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) Foundation in recognition of her outstanding work. She also joins a network of 1,000 teachers and administrators who have pledged to advocate for study abroad by exposing students to international experiences and global perspectives in preparing for their college careers.

Alumna and faculty member seek to expand student horizons through cultural exchange.

“So many of my former students have had wonderful experiences studying abroad. Their email messages to me are filled with excitement and a newfound appreciation of cultural differences,” says Lesch. “I will continue to share the numerous benefits of studying abroad with my junior and senior students hoping to increase their level of interest, and finally celebrate with them their newfound appreciation of cultural differences.” The IIE AIFS Foundation Generation Study Abroad Enrichment Grant provided financial assistance to McAuley students who traveled to Spain over their spring break, March 25 – April 2, 2016. This opportunity to study abroad was offered to any student in a Spanish class, and the financial break helped make the trip affordable to anyone interested in experiencing the Spanish culture for themselves. This trip included cooking classes, visits to famous museums and landmarks, bicycle tours of countryside towns and much more. Studying abroad can boost a student’s post-college career opportunities, and foster mutual understanding and national security in a globalized world. Yet only one in 10 American college students study abroad before they graduate and only seven percent of college students are enrolled in a language course. Teachers are uniquely positioned to inspire curiosity about the world by teaching all subjects through a global lens, as well as advocating for global enrichment activities,

language learning, and exchange programs. IIE and the AIFS Foundation partnered to recognize those teachers who have made outstanding efforts to bring the world into the classroom and community, and to provide them with resources and inspire them to continue their work. “Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, and leaders in every field will need to engage in meaningful international experiences to prepare for the demands of our globalized world,” said Allan E. Goodman, IIE’s President and CEO. “The Institute of International Education proudly supports teachers who are building a pipeline of students who are prepared to take advantage of international opportunities in the future.” “We are pleased to partner with IIE to enable teachers and students to learn more about our world through an international experience,” said William L. Gertz, President and CEO of AIFS. “Our success as a society depends upon deepening our knowledge of other cultures and languages. This can only be achieved by learning at the source.”

Pictured with Senora Lesch are students Delila Arreola ’17, Jessica Bugayong ’17, Emma Clark ’16, Alex Devlin ’17, Gabbie Galvan ’16, Emily Gildea ’17, Victoria Green ’17, Annabelle Hladik ’17, Morgan King ’16, Araceli Lara ’17, Madeline Moody ’17, Annie Murnane ’16, Yaitzel Noriega ’17 and Cate Scott ’16 and World Language Department faculty member Senora Laura Zeilner.

Recipients of the IIE AIFS Foundation Generation Study Abroad Enrichment Grants are part of a network of 1,000 teachers and administrators who have taken the Generation Study Abroad pledge to build a pipeline of students who will enter college with plans to embark upon an international experience such as studying, interning or volunteering abroad. IIE provides these teachers with global teaching resource, industry news and networking opportunities designed to build the global educator community. IIE launched the Generation Study Abroad teacher campaign one year ago asking 1,000 teachers to join the five-year Generation Study Abroad initiative that convenes leaders in education, business and governments to increase the number and diversity of U.S. college students who study abroad. “Traveling to a foreign country allows [us]… to become more active global citizens,” stated students Emma Clark ’16 and Emily Gildea ’17. “We are ready for this challenge!”

Breakfast with the Benefactors On May 3 McAuley hosted its annual breakfast for scholarship recipients and their benefactors. Held in the student lounge, this special “thank you” event featured student Mariel Galvan ’16 who gave the guests a glimpse into her McAuley experience, while sharing her gratitude to the individuals who made her career at McAuley possible. Below are excerpts from Mariel’s remarks.

“Receiving a Catholic education is truly a privilege. I think I can speak for all of the parents of the student body when saying there are a lot of sacrifices that have to be made in order to make this experience a reality. Thanks to the Maggie Guilfoyle Award and St. Therese Little Flower Scholarship, I was blessed my senior year to be able to help lift the financial burden off my parents. My family has had our fair share of instability and uncertainty when it comes to reassurance of a steady income. These scholarships have not only helped fund my education, but also helped with college expenses, made Kairos 120 and 122 a reality, and allowed me and nine other amazing young women fix the homes of the beautiful Appalachian families of Clintwood, Virginia.” “There is truly no high school that is as welcoming and life altering as McAuley. It is an education that extends outside of the classroom; an experience that teaches its students how to live purposefully and become their best selves. This experience, however, would be impossible without the generosity and compassion of all of the donors who have helped support the amazing young women who sit before us. You have made this lifetime advantage a reality for some very strong and capable women.” – M ar i e l G al van ’ 16

Grants Update

ACADEMIC YEAR 2015-16

FUNDING OF THE CIT & MASTERY MANAGER

UPGRADE OF THE SECURITY & SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM

The West Midwest Mercy Ministry Grant award in the amount of $37,500 supported us in accomplishing our goal of enriching our technology education initiative which centers on providing a more complete transformation of teaching by maximizing the functionality of technology. The initiative included employing a full time Instructional Technology Specialist who assists teachers in incorporating technological hardware and software into their lesson planning, particularly through the use of the iPad, SmartBoard, projector, and classroom computer. This allowed us to connect the way our tech-savvy students learn in school with the way they experience life outside the classroom.

The Fred J. Brunner Foundation award of $25,000 allowed us to update our security and surveillance system, making it compatible with our improved wireless capabilities. By increasing the number of cameras throughout all areas of our building and grounds we are now able to provide maximum monitoring of and safety for our students and the many events and activities that take place on the campus throughout the year. The Fred J. Brunner Foundation has been a generous supporter of Mother McAuley for more than four years contributing over $100,000.

Additional support in the amount of $20,000 for our Center for Innovative Teaching (CIT) was received from the “A. Montgomery Ward Foundation, John A. Hutchings, Richard W. Oloffson and Bank of America, N.A., Trustee.” Mother McAuley appreciates the partnership with the foundation and its trustees and looks forward to sharing the accomplishments of the Center for Innovative Teaching. In doing so we highlight the CIT’s outreach program to the neighboring elementary schools allowing them to utilitize the services and expertise of our Instructional Technology Specialist to provide quality professional development to their teachers.

The Helen Brach Foundation, for the third consecutive year, supported our Sister Agatha O’Brien Memorial Scholars with a $25,000 grant. In the third year of its existence this program boasts 56 young students who are able to maintain a grade point average of 3.75 across all subjects.

Mr. Richard Burridge, longtime friend of Mary Acker Klingenberger, provided support by means of stocks, for our CIT. Mr. Burridge and Gwen Quackenbush spent an afternoon touring McAuley with special attention on the CIT.

SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE Several foundations allowed us to award scholarship assistance totaling $42,000 and benefiting 21 students.

The Mazza Foundation established the Mazza Scholarship program here at McAuley at the request of Mary Acker Klingenberger. Five students were selected for this program, each receiving $2,000. All are residents of the city of Chicago with the expressed need for scholarship assistance. The Mazza family members, Mary Jane Rubinelli, Nicholas J. Lavezzorio, Joseph O. Rubinelli, Jr., and Joan Lavezzorio Schniedwind, are proud to sponsor the academic growth of tomorrow’s leaders. The Owen Foundation has provided scholarship assistance in the amount of $7,500 and awarded among five students who reside in the inner city of Chicago. Julie Owens Minemen ‘82 meets annually with the Owens Scholars to hear their enthusiasm for the opportunities associated with the lifetime advantage of a McAuley education.

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

|

2015 - 2016

Throughout its history, Mother McAuley has honored its founding commitment to providing a liberal arts, college-preparatory Catholic education – seeped in the Mercy tradition – to young women, regardless of financial ability to pay full tuition. Between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016, thanks to the generosity of donors, 61 percent of students received financial assistance. We are grateful to the alumnae, parents and friends who have generously established or contributed to endowed and annual scholarship funds, ensuring that all young women benefit from the lifetime advantage of a McAuley education. Every effort has been made to ensure that this report is accurate and complete. If an error has been made, please accept our apologies and notify the Institutional Advancement Office at (773) 881-6559.
