dear alumnae
Spring is an exciting time here at McAuley. We have begun construction for our new chemistry labs and look forward to watching the new addition being built and the opportunities that it will offer for our young women. Seniors are making final plans for their post high school endeavors and although they feel exhilarated at the thought of the senior activities, they also express that they will greatly miss McAuley. They cherish the memories of their four years of the McAuley experience. Do you recall how you felt as you prepared to graduate from McAuley? I imagine it was a similar blend of mixed emotions.
When I look around at the faces
We hope you come visit before the end of the school year. I would love to have you share with our current young women your memories of McAuley and the impact it has had on your lives. Come visit and you will be impressed with our young women and their ambitions for the future!
that make up Mother McAuley today, I am amazed by how much has changed over the years. The uniforms, the hairstyles, the shoes and the school building itself. The connection between the past and the future of McAuley is very strong. My years as a Mercy educator and administrator have taught me how the Sisters of Mercy “stand on the shoulders of those who came before them and use the wisdom of the past to create the vision of the future. As graduates, you inspire those who will follow in your footsteps to lead a life that embraces faith, compassion and a continual quest for learning. In May, we will graduate our 166th class of young women, who will join you in carrying on the traditions of McAuley and a Mercy education. Your support is important for the tradition to continue. Thank you for remaining connected to us.
Peace and Blessings,
My best to you,
Dr. Christine M. Melone President
Claudia Woodruff Principal
We had five different student trips over the spring break. Students went with faculty chaperones to Spain for language and culture study, Appalachia for service projects, New York for theatre students, Orlando, Florida for softball and Disneyworld for the McAuley/ Brother Rice Band. This represents the variety of student experiences beyond the classroom.

New Chemistry Labs E xp anding For E d u c a t i on a l E xce l l e n ce I I
Noteworthy FACTS
Why are the new chemistry labs needed?
Since 1846, Mother McAuley has provided a quality education for young women. Acknowledging our indebtedness to Saint Xavier Academy for a tradition of excellence, we celebrate and look to the future once again. Our tradition calls for planning, creativity, courage to meet new needs, and a continued commitment to excellence. These qualities are the core of what Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School is all about.
The current lab is outdated for today’s high academic standards and will soon lose its viability. The new two story addition housing the state-of-the-art chemistry labs will offer a healthy, high quality laboratory and classroom collaborative environment. Prep rooms, storage and a science team office will be constructed. In addition to the labs, the building will include many energy efficient and sustainable features. A future project will add a landscaped courtyard with outdoor classrooms, native landscaping and a water habitat.
Through a new extensive plan the school looks to expand its present facility to meet the needs of the young women of the 21st century. The school is undertaking a $2.5 million construction project to build two new chemistry laboratories.
How can I help?
The new building will be a registered Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver project with many sustainable features. LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction, and operation of high performance, environmentally-friendly “green” buildings. Construction has begun in the spring of 2012. The new building will be completed by the fall of 2012.
You can help by: • Learning about the project and its benefits • Encouraging others to make a gift to support the project • Give a meaningful gift budgeted over the five year campaign period
How will donors to this campaign be recognized? All contributors will be alphabetically listed in the Annual Report. Contributors of $5,000 and more will be recognized on a donor’s recognition tribute. Those who fully fund specific areas and/or equipment for the new facility will be honored by having a plaque affixed in an appropriate location. Naming opportunities for each lab are available for gifts of $750,000 or more.

look what’s new Walkathon/New Digital Sign
Parking Lot Renovation The campus was buzzing with noise last summer, and not from students! June, July and August found bulldozers, diggers and cement trucks gracing the grounds as we began renovations to our west parking lot. Despite a rainy start, courtesy of Mother Nature, the construction was completed on schedule and in time to welcome faculty, staff and students to the new school year. A new design and traffic pattern, along with improved drainage and lighting add to the beauty of our campus. We’re certain everyone visiting McAuley will appreciate the many improvements. During the all school opening liturgy on August 29, Fr. Mark Walter, with assistance from our own Deacon Cislo, blessed the new parking lot with holy water.
On Friday, September 23, 2011, nearly 1,200 Mother McAuley High School students took to the street to celebrate the school’s inaugural Mercy Day Walk-a-Thon. The celebration began with a kick-off assembly in the school’s main gym, where students were led in a blessing, followed by songs and cheers led by members of the student council. Students, faculty and staff, decked out in a special Mercy Day commemorative T-shirt, then set out on a 1.4-mile walk throughout neighboring Evergreen Park. Following the walk, students were invited back to campus to enjoy a picnic and entertainment by DJ Loren Gent of Fun! Fun! Fun! DJ Service with free hot dogs, chips and pop. As customary, students were given a Mercy Day gift, a t-shirt that they were invited to wear during the walk to show their school spirit. Prior to the walk, students were invited to pledge money to help raise funds for a new LED-digital marquee for the front of the school. The marquee will be used for a variety of communication reasons, but most importantly, it helps us to “Tell the Story.” Students were asked to pledge anywhere from $15 to $100 to show their support and to leave their legacy. The new sign will include a plaque honoring the classes of 2012 through 2015 in recognition of their fundraising efforts. We showed that with a little effort by EVERY student, faculty and staff member, we could reach our goal and show our support for Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School. The new sign was installed on May 17th, 2012. Mercy Day is celebrated annually and honors the legacy set forth by founder Catherine McAuley to educate young women.

Celebration Dinner Gala The name Celebration, given to Mother McAuley’s largest fundraiser, is all encompassing. The literal definition of celebration is the essence of what Mother McAuley’s premier event stands for: to show happiness that something special has happened by eating and drinking together or playing music. At Mother McAuley’s annual Celebration Endowment Fundraiser, we celebrate our honorees, donors, guests and our school community as a whole. The McAuley community celebrated individuals who exemplify the charism and values of Catherine McAuley, carry on the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy, and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to our mission. Mary Kean Coffey ’63 was honored with the Catherine McAuley Leadership Award, The Boyle Family was honored with the Distinguished Alumnae Award and Father Marty O’Donovan was honored with the Sister Agatha O’Brien award, new this year. The Celebration 2012 co-chairs were Michael and Peggy Evans Rourke ’76, Jose and Kathy Garcia and Timothy and Kathleen Sterk, parents of McAuley alumnae and witnesses to the benefits of a McAuley education. This annual event benefits the Mother McAuley Endowment for Student Tuition Assistance. The dinner dance featured fine dining from Jewell Catering, music by Rich Daniels City Lights Orchestra, priceless auction items and fabulous raffle prizes.
Thank you to all who supported this event.
Mary Kean Coffey is an alumna of the class of 1963, whose McAuley education remains a source of immense pride. Through her work and personal relationships, she continues to contribute to the success of Catholic education. Mary attended Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, and earned a master’s degree in education from Saint Xavier University. Previously a teacher, she currently is the Assistant to the Dean in the School of Education for Saint Xavier University and remains involved with many boards and organizations. She and her husband Mike have four children, two of whom attended McAuley. The lessons of Catherine McAuley continue to shape Mary’s family as her granddaughter, Kathryn, will enroll this fall as a student in the class of 2016. For more than 40 years, the Boyle family has been benefactors and supporters of the rich tradition of faith and education Mother McAuley offers. All six daughters – Kathleen Boyle Styler ‘76, Mary Boyle Weiler ‘78, Patricia Boyle Sundermeir ‘81, Therese Boyle Niego ‘82, Sheila Boyle Nawrocki ‘84 and Colleen Boyle Krzysciak ‘87 – attended Mother McAuley. They credit their parents with instilling a deep sense of commitment to the greater good. Today, they honor the foundation their parents and Mother McAuley provided through their desire to put their knowledge into action for the benefit of our local and global society. A native southsider, Father Marty O’Donovan was ordained in 1978 and stayed true to his roots through his early assignments at St. Cajetan, Our Lady of Good Counsel and St. Christina. In 2008 he was named pastor of SS. Faith, Hope and Charity in Winnetka. Father Marty has been involved in the larger Catholic community as a member of numerous committees and boards, and his civic duties span 33 years as an active member of various boards and associations. He is graduate of Saint Mary’s of the Lake, Mundelein Seminary.

a special message In June 2012, Dr. Melone will be leaving her position of President at McAuley.
Dr. Christine Melone
A woman of vision, leadership, and energy for the mission. In July 2007, Dr. Melone arrived at Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School to assume the position of the first lay President/Principal. She knew from the start that this was not a “9-to-5 job,” that it would demand that she be “visible and accessible” to the entire school community: board members, administrators, teachers, staff, students, parents, donors and the neighborhood residents and businesses. From her beginning days, Dr. Melone demonstrated boundless energy and stamina that propelled all of us to “raise the bar” in terms of delivery of service, outcomes, education to all students. Impelled by her passion and desire to grow professionally, she consistently participated in seminars, academies and webinars, and encouraged us to do the same. Her focus has been student-centered – a great reminder to every faculty and staff member. She is well liked by students and supportive of the many student activities hosted by the school: concerts, plays, sports events, fundraisers, appreciation banquets, and more. In her years with McAuley, Dr. Melone continually promoted the McAuley Lifetime Advantage, an education that strives for excellence in preparing women for leadership roles in society. Dr. Melone’s goal from the beginning was to build on the solid foundation of those who served before her. We are grateful for all that she has done to fulfill this goal and for all the ways in which she challenged and encouraged us so that we may arrive at excellence.
To borrow words from The Brother’s Karamazov...
“Let us agree that we shall never forget one another, and whatever happens - remember how good it felt when we were all here together, united by a good and decent feeling, which made us better people, probably than we would otherwise have been.”

Jan Malloy Scholarship for Spirit and Community Service Update The Jan Malloy Scholarship for Spirit and Community Service honors Jan Malloy who served as the Alumnae Coordinator for eight years, becoming an integral part of the McAuley family. The scholarship was started by Jennifer Costello Fortner ’94 and her husband PJ, and Mary Ann Smrz in memory of Jan who died of ovarian cancer on September 3, 2009. The scholarship committee is happy to announce that three $1000 scholarships were awarded for this year to juniors Mary Joan Evans, Kristen Kleist and Michelle Konecki. Over three years this scholarship has grown from one award of $500 too three $1000 awards. The theme of Jan’s scholarship “Sticks in a Bundle, Cannot be Broken,” represents not only the support Jan received from family, friends and the McAuley community during her 18-month challenge with cancer, but also her belief in the strength of the alumna connections to the school. Jan believed that anything could be accomplished when people worked together toward a common goal. One of the things she enjoyed most about her role was to see a need or an opportunity at McAuley and connect it with an alum who might also benefit from the experience. Thank you to everyone who continues to contribute to keeping Jan’s memory alive. To learn more about how to donate to the Jan Malloy Scholarship Fund please visit www.mothermcauleyalums.org.

KatyAnn Quinn visits McAuley After graduating in May 2007 from McAuley, KatyAnn Quinn had no idea what life had in stored for her. She went on to continue her education at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. While there, she studied Business Administration with a focus on Non-Profit Management. After graduation, she participated in a two-month internship with Cross-Cultural Solutions, an international volunteering organization that has programs in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. She chose to travel to the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania, East Africa. While there, she taught at a pre-primary school for children from the ages of 3-7. During her trip, she witnessed the harsh reality of the everpresent inequality of women. As she learned more about the culture, she became more aware of the lack of resources available to the community, especially for women. Upon her return home, she and fellow volunteers created an organization called S.E.W. (Successfully Empowering Women). “The purpose of S.E.W. is help brighten the future of women by successfully climbing Africa’s highest mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro,” says KatyAnn. “Through the climb, we will strive to raise a substantial amount of money to donate to the O’Brien School for the Maasai women’s empowerment group and to the existing and future projects at the school.” Before and after the climb, she will be teaching at the school and working with the women’s empowerment group for a year. For more information on the climb and the school, visit their website at: www.sewclimb.com. In February KatyAnn returned to speak to McAuley students about her trip and educate them on the S.E.W. organization. KatyAnn says the main goal for her visit was to bring a new perspective to the students. What she wanted them to take from her presentation was to realize, that even though they are one person they can still make a huge difference in the life of another. KatyAnn says it was great to see some familiar faces in the hallway. “My visit to McAuley was a wonderful day and I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with so many young hearts and minds,” says KatyAnn. “I was able to present a video of my trip to seven classes, ranging from freshman to seniors. I was taken back by the enthusiasm and attentiveness of the students. It made me even more excited to present something I feel so passionate about.”

Legacy Roots Run Deep
Fast Friends: Progressive Networking Luncheon
The Duggan/O’Connor Family has been involved with the McAuley Community for many years. Currently they have their 50th and 51st member of their family enrolled at McAuley. They have continued the McAuley tradition which began with current English teacher Virginia (Ginny) Duggan Murphy in 1956. The connection with McAuley began with Ginny’s father-in-law who was part of a group of Mercy Sisters supporters who handled the real estate purchase of the property which McAuley current resides on. Although she was only in 8th grade at the time, he was a family friend and neighbor to Ginny’s parents.
The Mother McAuley Alumnae Association and Law Society hosted a Progressive Networking Luncheon on Wednesday, May 30th at Petterino’s Restaurant in Chicago. Alumnae gathered together at this fun and lively event to meet and connect with other alumnae, making new business contacts. For $40 alumnae received a three-course meal, switching tables after each course. Each participant had the opportunity to introduce themselves and describe their business, taking the stress and guesswork out of networking. Guests exchanged business cards, marketing materials and networked with over 50 alumnae during this revolutionary style of networking. Thank you to all who attended and we look forward to hosting similar events in the future.
“From all the successful McAuley graduates in the family,” Ginny says, “I think you would have to say that we believe in McAuley because we have experienced the truth of Catherine McAuley’s statement that No work of charity is more productive of good to society than the careful instruction of women. We have found that the liberal arts education we received here in the Catholic atmosphere has supported us in our lives and in our many varied careers. And some of us have never left.”

The presentations included Jodee’s day-long anti-bullying program, “It’s NOT Just Joking Around!” which McAuley students, faculty, staff, parents and members of the community were invited to attend in three different sessions. Jodee spent the morning speaking to the entire student body in the gym of McAuley, sharing the personal story of her struggle from fifth grade through high school as the target of severe school bullying. After school she presented to the faculty and staff including specific, practical advice on how to intervene with students who are victims of bullying. Jodee finished her visit with a special evening presentation that included a 90-minute workshop featuring Jodee’s compelling personal story, advice on how to react if your child is the victim, bully or bystander, from the rare point of view of someone who’s actually lived through it and now dedicates her life to helping others. In addition, Jodee addressed the plight of the “adult survivor of peer abuse” and offered suggestions on how to overcome those open wounds from the past. She shared what her parents and teachers did that helped, what didn’t and why, as well as offered similar insights from the tens of thousands of bullied students she has worked with across the nation. This event was sponsored by McAuley S.A.D.D. and Action/Reaction Clubs through a grant from the McAuley Alumnae Board.

school news Mock Trial McAuley’s Mock Trial Club competed for the first time in the ISBA competition held at Markham Courthouse. Competing against more than a dozen teams, we are proud to report that McAuley tied for third place. In addition to this impressive win, each team member earned a $2,000 stipend/scholarship to be used toward tuition at John Marshall Law School. This exciting outcome came about through the hard work of the talented students supported by their parents and the commitment and collaboration of the faculty moderators, Holly Hanky-Nickels and Chris Pollard, the McAuley Alumnae coaches, and the generous support of the McAuley Law Society. In the weeks leading up to the Trial, the McAuley Advantage was readily apparent, as more than a dozen McAuley Alumnae lawyers, including sitting judges, Assistant State’s Attorneys and preeminent private practitioners worked to prepare the team. We are very proud of our students and look forward to what they will have to offer in the future.
McAuley’s New Bowling Team President Dr. Christine Melone and Athletic Director Laurie Jakubzak ’78 are pleased to announce the addition of bowling to McAuley’s athletic programs in November 2011. With the addition of bowling McAuley now offers its student athletes 13 sports to choose from including basketball, cross country, diving, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track & field, volleyball and waterpolo. During their first season the varsity team placed 5th in GCAC and the JV team placed 6th in the conference of nine teams. A special congratulations to senior Ari Bulthuis ‘12 who received All Conference as one of the top 25 bowlers in the league. The new bowling coaches are Hilary Sterk ’05, head coach and Colleen Kelly ’05, assistant coach. “McAuley has always been known for its strong athletics,” says Coach Sterk, “and we knew starting this program would be no different. We were continuously told by the other schools coaches how impressed they were with our girls during their first year, not only their talents on the lanes but their sportsmanship and respect for the league. We applaud you for starting a strong program and setting high standards for the girls who will participate in the future.”
McAuley’s New Culinary Club McAuley is home to a new Culinary Champions Club! In January, a group of 16 students began meeting on Thursday afternoons for a culinary class led by Mr. Jim Behrens, head chef at Food Service Professionals. Students learned basic culinary skills such as making soups, appetizers and dinner entrees. Due to popular demand, a second session was added in April.

Catherine McAuley Honors Society and a panel of alums representing a wide range of careers explained how their single gender education helped them reach their goals. Next year’s Speaker Series theme will focus on Careers and Preparation. Plans are still being formulated for the four events.
A new program was instituted to recognize superior academic achievement, offer opportunities for academic and cultural enrichment, encourage further development of skills and talents, and reward high-scoring students for their endeavors. The program was named for Catherine McAuley who founded the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin. From Dublin, Catherine sent her sisters all over the world to serve the poor. One of her strongest beliefs was “No work of society can be more productive of good to society than the careful instruction of women.” So today’s students can better the world in which they live, we continue that tradition of educating women. Red graduation cords were worn proudly for the first time at graduation this year by Catherine McAuley Honors Scholars of Distinction who have fulfilled all the program’s requirements. These graduates and the other Catherine McAuley Honors Scholars are inaugural members of the program begun in the spring of 2011. Members of the administration bid farewell at a special breakfast before they left. Besides finishing off their five AP classes, creating and updating their electronic portfolios, taking part in extracurricular activities, maintaining their 4.09 averages, all the current CMHS members took part in a variety of enrichment activities this year. They attended a four part Speakers Series based on the core values of Mother McAuley: liberal arts, Catholic tradition, college prep, and single gender education. Three department chairs enlightened them about the meaning of liberal arts; a lawyer alum presented her ideas of sharing her faith and her career; eleven college age alums from seven universities shared their experiences on campus;

In addition, seniors and juniors had the opportunity to meet a college rep who shared the secrets of writing a winning college essay; these upperclassmen also received special reminders when colleges they were interested in were on campus. Juniors and sophomores had lunch time sessions with counselors who helped them interpret their PSAT scores and prepare to take the ACT. Freshmen had their own lunch time welcome from upper class CMHS members to introduce them to the complexities of high school life. Counselors also met with them in a lunch time session to give them insights on summer enrichment opportunities, registration and planning for their next three years. A weekly newsletter attempts to keep them up to date on outside enrichment, scholarship opportunities and more. At registration time, all members met with the Program Director and their counselor – both of whom worked together to help students make the best possible decisions. If it can be scheduled, the college counselor hopes to bring in students and reps from some unusual schools not commonly attended by McAuley graduates to meet the juniors and sophomores as they begin to make their college plans. Freshmen began their electronic portfolios right after spring break. They include samples of work from this year’s classes, a resume, and pages illustrating their extracurricular activities. Upperclassmen added material to their portfolios this spring and seniors are finished theirs in April. The inaugural year of the CMHS Program based its endeavors on Catherine McAuley’s statement: “No work of society can be more productive of good to society than the careful instruction of women.” Helping the highest achieving students maximize their educational experience will assure future “good to society.”

Mercy Day On Thursday, September 22, 2011 Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School was pleased to announce the recipients of the 2011 Catherine McAuley Award. The honorees were Senior Elizabeth McCarthy and Freshman Dean Meg Griffin Gardner ‘99. Elizabeth is well known for her caring and compassionate spirit, and she exemplifies the characteristics of Catherine McAuley by her outstanding leadership and service to the school. She has been a student ambassador for four years and is a student ambassador leader. Elizabeth is a leader in both the Mentor Program as well as Kairos. She is a member of the National Art Honor Society and has been on the honor roll since freshman year. She also has served on the volleyball team as a manager. She is always ready to listen, to help, to comfort and to motivate students. She braves obstacles and challenges with passion and dedication. Meg is a leader who takes action, as evidenced by her initiation of the McAuley Mentor Program which supports students as they enter McAuley, and offers juniors and seniors the opportunity to take a leadership role as mentors. She also serves as the assistant volleyball coach here for eight years, and like Catherine promotes teamwork and cooperation. Meg is a 1999 graduate of McAuley. As a student, she was involved in Action Reaction, NHS, Student Council and volleyball. Each year, the McAuley community is invited to nominate a senior and a faculty/staff member to receive the Catherine McAuley Award. This coveted award epitomizes the mission of Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School and honors its namesake, Catherine McAuley. Within months I grasped it. I realized that this place is somewhere that you will remember for the rest of your life. For me, it instituted my core values and morals I practice today – areas such as women’s rights, study habits, self-assurance, generosity towards others, leadership skills, and constantly searching for more knowledge.
