• Coordinates leadership efforts for inclusive excellence institution-wide. Guides efforts to conceptualize, define, assess, and cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence as an institutional and educational resource.
• Serves as the senior advisor to the President on diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence.
Clemson University is seeking a Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Excellence to fulfill the following duties:
THE OPPORTUNITY
• Works across the academy, and with a particular emphasis with (a) Finance and Operations, (b) the Office of the Provost (c) the Division of Student Affairs, (d) University Relations, (c) and Development and Alumni Relations.
• Supervises the team within the division that plans, leads, and implements, in collaboration with university partners, institutional and divisional change actions and initiatives to advance diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence throughout all facets of Clemson University.
The Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Excellence is an executive leader who catalyzes, fosters, and promotes a university-wide culture of inclusive excellence where individuals from all racial and ethic identities, ages, nationalities, social and economic status, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, religious, political, and ideological perspectives, veteran status, and physical and mental abilities are able to thrive and be engaged. The Vice President provides strategic and programmatic leadership for diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and initiatives that advance diversity and inclusion as a critical component of social, academic, and intellectual life at Clemson University.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education - Bachelor’s Degree Work Experience - A Bachelor’s Degree may be substituted for 7+ Years of work experience in a leadership role within Higher Education DEI practices.

Develops and implements strategic leadership for CU diversity plan, diversity programs, and policies that result in a learning and workplace environment that is welcoming and supporting for all students, faculty and staff. Supports the strategic importance of a broadly inclusive campus community that will prepare all students for success in a diverse world. Leads the development of new initiatives to provide focus, accountability for equity, and inclusive efforts across the university while encouraging collaboration and cohesion among existing efforts and programs. Specific responsibilities include:

• Partners with senior leaders to identify policies and practices that support the recruitment, hiring, retention, and advancement of faculty, staff, and students from historically underrepresented and historically excluded backgrounds.
• Serves as an institutional thought leader and leading voice on matters of diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence.
• Works with senior leaders, deans, and faculty to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the curricula, in high-impact experiences, and through pedagogy to contribute to an academic culture that embraces inclusive excellence.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education - 2nd Doctoral / Professional Degree - JD, Ph.D. - Law, Sociology, Psychology, Higher Ed Leadership Work Experience - 10+ years
• Collaborates with university senior leaders to shape and implement investments, plans, approaches, and assessments aligned with university priorities and goals.
• Co-Chairs Clemson University’s Council on Diversity and Inclusion with the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.
• Develops resources for division leaders that reflect best practices and current research in supervision and mentorship to ensure an inclusive environment that supports faculty and staff development and career progression.
JOB DUTIES STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP
POLICY Provides policy expertise and accountability on all aspects of inclusion and diversity for the university, including Title IX, non-discrimination and sexual harassment, and Americans with Disabilities. Specific responsibilities include:
• Deploys and measures initiatives aimed at diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence in the workplace.
• Creates a culture of assessment and evaluation of diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence initiatives.
• Provides direction and guidance for seven Clemson University Commissions, including the Commission on the Black Experience, the Commission on Latino Affairs, the Commission on Women, the Accessibility Commission, the Veterans Commission, the LGBTQ Commission, and the Commission on Asian Pacific Islander Desi Americans.
OUTREACH & REPRESENTATION
• Works closely with inclusive excellence leads across divisions and within the broader community to create a culture of equity and inclusion.
• Works with the Office of University Compliance and Ethics, Human Resources, and the Office of General Counsel to guide, develop, and communicate administrative policies.
• Plans and hosts university and public events about diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence.
• Proposes and/or develops institutional programming, including employee developmental programs that foster intercultural competence and cultivating equity-minded leaders.
CLEMSON UNIVERSITY
Fosters community outreach. Responds to public inquiries and provides education about the university’s diversity and inclusion goals and efforts. Leads the university’s effort to be a national leader in the development of a diverse campus community, which includes ensuring a diverse student body, faculty and staff, as well as a vibrant, inclusive, and rich intellectual environment.
• Advises and serves as a resource for policy-making bodies on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Facilitates group discussions and town hall meetings in response to campus, national, and global events related to diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence.
• Maintains strategic relationships with the community, alumni, corporate donors, benefactors, industry, and local, state, regional and national organizations focused on diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence.
• Facilitates learning opportunities with key stakeholders to make sense of data through an equity-minded lens to inform future action and strategic planning.
Develops critical metrics of success that will measure improvements in climate, recruitment, and retention of a diverse student body, faculty and staff workplace
ADMINISTRATIVE
Established in 1899 through the will of the founder, Thomas Green Clemson, the university is located on a 20,000-acre campus in Upstate South Carolina in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains and along Lake Hartwell.
The city of Clemson operates with the Clemson Police Department, Clemson University Fire Department and Pickens County EMS, for public safety needs. All departments are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Clemson Area Transit offers free transportation (known as the CAT bus) to all riders. The city is also served by Amtrak on the Crescent route. The closest major airport is Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, located a 45-minute drive away. The school district is Pickens County. Children living in the city of Clemson attend Clemson Elementary School, RC Edwards Middle School and Daniel High School. Residents also enjoy access to the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts, the Clemson University Experimental Forest, the 18-hole Walker Golf Course, the South Carolina Botanical Garden, and the Bob Campbell Geology Museum from the Clemson University campus. In addition, the University has 19 NCAA teams and numerous intramural and club sports.
