Join us for an alluring evening at Subtext: Black Market Tale Traders (see pages 12-13) where you can explore the Purim story through four fresh, female writers’ stories all dramatically produced in an after-hours setting; come to our Other Seder (see pages 16-17) to experience Moses’ last 12 hours of life as a grouchy Japanese bunraku puppet in a specially commissioned show for 2012; and put your feet up and laugh at Bat Mitzvahs Revisited (see page 33), where we go back in time to awful

There have been more exciting developments on our Finchley Road site. Our main contractor, BAM Construction Ltd, started on programme in August 2011, scheduled to finish in early 2013. If you’re passing the site you can see for yourself through the vision holes that we’ve cut into the hoardings. We look forward to the new Jewish Community Centre offering wonderful facilities for all to enjoy. These will include a large Kosher café, bar, freelance hub, a 60 seat cinema, a demonstration kitchen, a full day-care nursery, a multi-purpose hall, versatile dance and drama studios, and arts and crafts workshop, several well appointed learning and meeting spaces and a multi-media resource centre. PRICES & CONCESSIONS We know that times are tough. At the JCC, we try to price our events to make them accessible to all. We produce events for everyone, and want to make sure as many people as possible can afford to come along. This season, we’ve made an effort to keep our prices at
the same level as they’ve been for several years. We offer concessions for students, members of youth movements, pensioners and the unemployed – if you need them, just phone and ask. You can also take advantage of our Pay What You Can evening. See page 50 for details.

Produced by Sarah Peters and presented by Jason Solomons, the podcast is a one-stop shop for a fresh, intelligent and often wry look at the Jewish issues du jour. Late Marriage (Director: Dover Koshashvili, Israel/France, 2001, 102 mins – Hebrew and Georgian with English Subtitles)

But everyone else in his family is a stickler for Georgian tradition, and his parents are forever trying to hitch him up to some nice young Jewish virgin. They introduce him to some beauties, too, but still Zaza’s uninterested. Is it possible none of the girls appeals, or is he too shy? Or might he be keeping a secret from his doting parents?
To celebrate ten years since its release, the JCC is proud to provide another opportunity to see this hilarious, edgy film about family, tradition, sex and religion. “Witty, provocative, emotionally forceful” Time Out “Touching and grotesquely funny” New York Times Winner of ten Israeli Academy Awards including Best Director and Best Film. 2nd February Sayed Kashua’s Dancing Arabs Often described as the Palestinian Seinfeld, as an Israeli Arab Sayed Kashua has a unique insider perspective on both Palestine and Israel. A gifted satirist, Kashua has also penned the wildly popular Israeli TV series Arab Labour and has a regular column in Haaretz, depicting the comic complexities of life as an Arab in Israel. His autobiographical novel Dancing Arabs sparkles with his trademark wit and deadpan humour. Written in Hebrew, it explores the complexities of growing up as an Israeli Arab with both poignant tenderness and playful lightness.
20th March Eshkol Nevo’s World Cup Wishes Can people actually change? At what cost? This is the question at the heart of Nevo’s novel, World Cup Wishes. Four very different friends write down what they wish will happen in their lives by the time of the next World Cup, when they will share their secrets. His moving and sparkling novel explores the gaps between dreams and reality, and meditates on the meaning of friendship.
Set against the background of the first and second Intifadas, the novel asks whether personal fulfilment is really possible in an atmosphere of repression.

In 2004, Kashua won the Prime Minister’s prize for literature. Arab Labour won the Award for Best Television Series at the Jerusalem Film Festival. Kashua has just won the 2011 Bernstein Prize for his latest novel, Second Person.

Olive at the JCC
You’re in good company At the JCC we love exploring galleries, taking walks around interesting parts of London and generally relaxing and having fun. It can be hard to do this if your partner does not want to join in or if you are alone. Olive events give you a chance to come and share the experience of belonging to a fantastic community. Olive is specifically for older members of the community who may find they have more time on their hands, and who are looking to discover new areas of interest - or who are relishing the fact that they now have the time to indulge in cultural delights. Someone from the JCC will be at these events to welcome you and introduce you to fellow members. We will provide a phone number for you to call should you be running late or simply need reassurance of directions. Enjoy the season and see you soon.

BEE THE CHANGE
For generations, the new Jewish year has been greeted with apple and honey, symbolising the hope for a sweet year ahead. Last year we had an idea to create a network of hives throughout the Jewish community that would provide this honey. It’s a concept that has Jewish roots, is achievable and has the potential to involve people of any background!
This is about learning from one another and creating opportunities to engage in a Jewish activity, whatever your background, level of practice or involvement.
Whether you are already a master beekeeper or just want to find out more, we’d love to hear from you. We’re connecting people and supporting advocates who will take this project to their community spaces, synagogues, local schools and private gardens or allotment sites.
48
It also provides a way to look into important sustainability issues through a Jewish lens.
You can keep up to date with our two wonderful beekeeper trainees by visiting the designated blog: http://thebuzz-blog.tumblr.com/

The Last Survivor (film) (Directors Michael Kleiman and Michael Pertnoy, USA/Germany/Israel, 2010, 92 mins, English)
50
This intimate, feature-length documentary has been winning awards at festivals across the world. The Last Survivor follows the lives of survivors of four different genocides and mass atrocities – the Holocaust, Rwanda, Darfur and Congo – focusing on each survivor’s ability to rebuild their lives in the face of tragedy and become inspiring agents of change.
We follow the film with a conversation with Nikki Levitan, Head of Social Justice at Alyth Synagogue, who was involved in the making of the film; David Russell, Director of Survivors Fund (SURF) – rebuilding the lives of survivors of the Rwandan genocide; and Judith Hassan OBE, Special Advisor to Therapeutic Services for Survivors and Refugees.
Interweaving these four stories, the film is a powerful and moving testament to the strength of the human spirit and the ability we each have to make a difference to our world. You can watch a trailer at www.thelastsurvivor.com

BETTER PARENTING
BETTER PARENTING Workshops This season we will be gathering to look at very different aspects of parenting. Please feel free to come to one or more of our parenting sessions – either to share your experience or to hear and learn from others. The sessions will be as follows: Session 1: 24TH JANUARY Parenting your Teen: with Dr Emma Silver and Dr Sian Barnett from Active Parenting. The teenage years are a time of biological, social and emotional development and change, with teenagers moving rapidly between wanting independence and returning to the familiar behaviour of childhood. Teenage behaviour can be confusing and can feel rejecting to parents, yet they still need you. This can leave parents feeling unsure about how to respond to their rapidly changing child, and some conflict is inevitable. It is important for parents to develop ways of communicating with their teenager to support them in what can be a turbulent time. This workshop is for parents of children approaching the teenage years as well as parents of teenagers. We cover: • Making sense of teenage behaviour. • Social and emotional development in the teenage years. • Finding ways to communicate with your teenager to reduce conflict. • Setting limits so that your teenager feels safe and secure. • Listening and talking with your teenager to promote respect and develop a positive relationship with your teenager. Dr Emma Silver and Dr Sian Barnett are senior clinical psychologists with many years’ experience working with young people and parents.
Please note this event will take place in a room that can only be accessed by stairs. Please contact the JCC if you have any concerns about accessibility.
