A TRIBUTE ... BY JUBILEE CLIENT ELIZABETH MOSELY You see me at my best;

Bright, smiling and welcoming;

You see me at my worst;

Raw, confused, emotional,

frustrated and angry

at what my life has become.

Your patience, understanding and encouragement unfailingly straightens me out

To cope with another day.

What would I do without you?

I know you are undervalued by some in society;

I want you to know you are priceless to me.

I thank you for all you do;

I love you for all you do;

I bless you for all you do;

And I thank God for giving me my own Samaritan To share my journey;

My faithful Carer.

INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATION PROVES JUBILEE’S COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE You may have noticed a new logo on the front of our newsletter. Jubilee Community Care has been successful in achieving ISO 9001:2015 Certification. ISO is a network of the international standards of 162 nations with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland that coordinates the system. ISO 9001:2015 Certification is an important seal of approval illustrating Jubilee’s commitment to the operating standards of the internationallyrecognised ISO management system. The certification highlights our credibility and is evidence that we will fulfil our service promises and our focus on high-quality customer service and satisfaction. Whilst ISO certification does not ensure success or profit, Jubilee firmly believes that following the ISO Standards in implementing a quality management system results in satisfied customers, repeat business, satisfied employees and continual improvement.

REMEMBER WAYS TO BEAT DEHYDRATION The hot summer still has some way to go so remember to keep hydrated to avoid heat stress. Early signs of heat stress include rising body temperature, dry mouth and eyes, headache, shortness of breath, vomiting and absence of tears when crying. You can follow these steps every day to help prevent dehydration: • Drink plain water often;

• Always carry water with you when you leave the house;

• Seek cool or shady places when you are out of the house; and • Be mindful of dehydration when doing outdoor activities.

How much water should you drink? Queensland Health advise us to drink enough water every day, even if it is not hot or we are not doing a lot of exercise. Men should drink 2.6 litres or 10 cups of fluid each day. Women should drink 2.1 litres or eight cups of fluid each day.

DID YOU KNOW JUBILEE’S ACTIVITIES AND CLASSES ARE NOT JUST FOR CLIENTS? Jubilee Community Care has a range of activities to keep seniors engaged, safe and active in their community. And seniors do not have to be a Jubilee client to take advantage of the activities. So if you want to get out and about, or know someone who does, share the news.  Jubilee Wanderers: Meet new friends and visit some interesting places around South-East Queensland. Trips include visits to landmarks, renowned and historic venues, barbecues, fish and chips by the sea, talks and more. The activities are promoted at www.jccagedcare.org.au/events as well as in our newsletters (see pages 9, 10, 11 of this newsletter).  Exercise classes: Staying active is the best way to keep our bodies and minds healthy. Classes are held on Tuesdays and Fridays at the UQ Healthy Living gym which caters to seniors.  Hydrotherapy classes: Experience the benefits of this low-impact therapy at Sinnamon Village every Monday. The health and healing benefits include reducing muscle tension and relieving pain, rehabilitating injured muscles, boosting the immune system and relieving stress. And what better way to cool down in the summer months!  Stay Standing: Our eight-week falls prevention course will run four times this year (see next page). It gives strategies to help you reduce the risk of falls, giving you more confidence to live the way you want. It also includes a program of home exercises and education sessions on topics such as footwear, safety at home, managing medication and continence, first aid, and vision and hearing. With all of this on offer there is something for everyone. And if you find you are in need of other services to help you maintain your independence in your home talk to us. Jubilee Community Care provides services through Home Care Packages, the Commonwealth Home Support Program as well as privately. Depending on eligibility and needs, the services include transport, shopping, cleaning and laundry, gardening, meal preparation, social support, respite care, personal care, medication management, clinical and nursing services and allied health services. MAINTAIN BALANCE AND MOBILITY WITH JUBILEE’S STAY STANDING PROGRAMS When Candy P started having falls and lengthy hospital stays in 2018 she knew she had to make some changes. And so Candy became one of dozens of seniors last year who participated in Jubilee’s Stay Standing program. The program consists of group sessions over eight weeks to help improve your balance and confidence, and reduce your risk of falls. For Candy, Stay Standing gave her the chance to practise her exercises to improve her balance and confidence. ‘‘I now have the confidence to move unaided in small spaces and that’s quite an achievement from when I was using a trolley or going from piece of furniture to piece of furniture,’’ Candy said. And Candy would recommend the program. ‘‘I’m so taken with it I want to have another go.’’ Stay Standing is the only accredited falls prevention program in Australia and includes a home program of exercises based on the Otago Exercise Program. Sessions are held on a Friday and each one includes structured exercises, presentations from allied health specialists and morning tea. Program topics covered include:

»» Assessment with physiotherapists Monique or Tim and home program of exercises to prevent falls in week one. »» Falls contingency planning, SMART goals and managing chronic pain.

»» Managing continence with a nurse and Healthy Bones with a dietician.

»» Safety at home with an occupational therapist, Vision with an optometrist and Hearing with a audiologist. »» Footwear to stay safe and comfortable on your feet with a podiatrist and Safety away from home with the Queensland Police Service. »» Managing medication and sleep with a Pharmacist.

»» First Aid with the Queensland Ambulance Service including recognising common senior emergencies. »» Exercise review and outcomes and a celebration in the final week. Stay Standing will begin in Indooroopilly on February 8, Bellbowrie on May 3, Indooroopilly again on July 19 and at Ashgrove on October 11. To find out more or book your spot phone Jubilee Community Care on 3871 3220.

FOOD SAFETY CHECKS PREVENT ILLNESS The concept of food as medicine, and its importance to health and wellbeing, is nothing new. The importance of food safety cannot be underestimated. Proper preparation, cooking and storage of foods can reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses. Adults 65 years and over are at a higher risk for hospitalisation and death from foodborne illness. So in these hot summer months, and indeed at all times, it is important to practice proper food safety.

Most people experience symptoms of food poisoning shortly after ingesting the offending substance, but it can take a few days or weeks for symptoms to surface. Treatment should be sought if you experience diarrhoea or bloody stools, vomiting, fever, severe headache or exhaustion.

GENERAL FOOD SAFETY

• Maintain good hygiene by washing your hands before handling or cooking food, including raw meat. • Keep raw meats, poultry and seafood separate from cooked food and food to be eaten raw. • Wash fruits and vegetables. Cook food thoroughly, especially minced meat, burger patties, sausages, rolled roasts, stuffed meats, rabbit, seafood and poultry.

HOT / COLD FOOD SAFETY

• Keep hot food above 60°C, cold food below 5°C, and eat any leftovers within 24 hours. • Take cold groceries home to the refrigerator as quickly as possible. • Place hot food prepared in advance in the refrigerator or freezer once it has stopped steaming and, when ready to use, reheat as quickly as possible until steaming hot.

• Food should be cooled from 60°C to 21°C within two hours and from 21°C • Put food in the refrigerator in closed to 5°C within a further four hours. containers or covered with plastic wrap to reduce cross contamination. • Thaw frozen food in the refrigerator • Do not re‐freeze food once it has been or microwave, not on the kitchen thawed. bench. • Stop pests and animals coming into the • Do not mix foods to avoid cross area where food is kept. START THE NEW YEAR BY CHECKING YOUR VACCINATION NEEDS WITH YOUR DOCTOR Vaccination for seniors aged 65 years or over is just as important as it is for children. The vaccines you need will depend on several things, including whether you missed out on childhood vaccines, if you are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, how old you are and whether you plan on travelling. Speak to your doctor or vaccination provider about your or your family’s specific needs. Some recommended vaccines are funded through the National Immunisation Program (NIP) or state and territory programs, while others can be purchased privately with a prescription. The following vaccines are recommended to adults who are aged 65 years and older. • Flu • Shingles: The shingles vaccine is recommended for adults aged 60 years or older who have not previously been vaccinated. The vaccine is free through the NIP for people aged 70 years with a catch-up for people aged 71 to 79 years until October 2021. • Pneumococcal disease: The pneumococcal vaccine is free through the NIP for adults aged 65 years and older. Booster vaccines A booster is an extra dose of a vaccine that you have had before that 'boosts' the immune system. The following vaccinations need booster doses: • Diphtheria • Tetanus: A booster dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine is recommended for adults who are aged 50 years old or over who have not received a vaccine that has tetanus in the past 10 years (but have previously completed a primary course of 3 doses); or who have tetanus-prone wounds (any wound that is not a clean, minor cut) if your previous dose was more than 5 years ago. • Whooping cough: A single booster dose of a whooping cough vaccine is recommended for adults who have not been vaccinated for the past 10 years if you are aged 65 years or older or you are in close contact with infants.
