WIN A BEAUTIFUL QUILT TO KEEP WARM With the winter cold set in wouldn’t it be nice to snuggle under one of these gorgeous quilts? The first prize is a single-bed quilt measuring 200cm x 138cm (pictured top) while the second quilt for the runner-up measures 165cm x 165cm. Both were kindly donated by the Monday Quilters at Redcliffe, a group which includes as a member the mother of client support manager Nicky Panagopoulos. Tickets are $5 each or three for $10. Proceeds will go towards purchasing aids that benefit Jubilee’s clients. To purchase tickets, preferably visit the office with cash. Alternatively, phone us on 3871 3220 and pay via a mailed cheque, or direct deposit which must include a reference to your name. GET SET TO PARTY AS JUBILEE CELEBRATES ITS 30TH ANNNIVERSARY THIS AUGUST Save the date - we are ready to party! Jubilee Community Care turns 30 this year and we have two parties in which we will kick up our heels and celebrate. Jubilee was born in 1989 as a pilot project by the University of Queensland’s Social Work Department and funded jointly by the Federal and Queensland governments. It was standing room only when Jubilee celebrated its move into its current office at Central Ave, It was initially overseen by a steering Indoooroopilly, in 2003. committee under the auspices of the Aged Care Unit of the Red Hill Paddington Community Centre. And now, 30 years on, the first party will be a daytime one in which we will celebrate with our valued clients. The event will feature entertainment by the Queensland Police Pipes and Drums. Local speaker Caylie Jeffery also will talk. Mrs Jeffery is the author of Under the Lino, a book written on the back of a community research project revolving around three 1940/50s bankbooks and money that Mrs Jeffery found underneath the lino flooring of her 1912 Queenslander in Milton. Local dignitaries also will be in attendance and a cake cutting will be held late morning. Lunch will be supplied. The party will be held on Wednesday, August 21 from 10am to 1.30pm at the West Toowong Bowls Club, 17 Bywong St, Toowong. Invitations will be posted in mid July. The following evening, Thursday, August 22, a formal event will be held at the Hillstone St Lucia Library Bar. The event will give staff, former staff, local politicians and representatives of Jubilee’s industry connections the chance to reflect and celebrate 30 years of life-changing services provided by Jubilee. Invitations to this event also will be mailed in mid July. Jubilee Director Shaun Riley said the milestone marked 30 years of delivering personalised and exceptional services to elderly people. “I am privileged and honoured to have provided operational direction to Jubilee Community Care for 10 of its 30 years,” he said. “The history and future of Jubilee Community Care is the exceptional talent of our staff and the quality of services they provide for clients. “We are truly blessed to have the opportunity of supporting clients to maintain their independence and links with their local communities. “I would like to acknowledge the work of staff past and present who have made Jubilee Community Care a respected provider of home care services for older people.” If you have any memories or memorabilia to share from the past 30 years email marketing@jccagedcare.org.au or phone Lisa on 3871 3220.

TESTIMONIALS FROM STAY STANDING PARTICIPANTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES At Jubilee Community Care we know our Stay Standing falls prevention program is making a difference in the lives of those who want to improve their confidence, balance and mobility. And our participants agree. Miriam, a participant in our Bellbowrie course in May, said the program “reinforced our good behaviours, helped us correct things we were doing wrong and gave us such good advice in areas we had not considered”. “It was a thoroughly worthwhile use of our time. There were lovely people presenting, facilitating and participating - it made it very enjoyable.” Participant Marie says: “Thank you for a well constructed information package. The talks have been most informative and the exercises we have been given work so well. Thank you to the staff members who have been so pleasant and caring.” And Jan says Stay Standing is a well-designed program. “It was informative, professional and interesting. Above all it was practical and easy to implement.” Stay Standing is the only accredited falls prevention program in Australia and includes a home program of exercises. Sessions are held on Fridays for eight weeks and each one includes exercises, presentations from allied health specialists and morning tea. Program topics covered include:

»» Assessment with physiotherapists Monique or Tim and home program of exercises to prevent falls in week one. »» Falls contingency planning, SMART goals and managing chronic pain. »» Managing continence with a nurse and Healthy Bones with a dietician. »» Safety at home with an occupational therapist, Vision with an optometrist and Hearing with a audiologist. »» Footwear to stay safe and comfortable on your feet with a podiatrist and Safety away from home with the Queensland Police Service. The Jubilee - Jubilee Community Care’s Newsletter

»» Managing medication and sleep with a pharmacist. »» First Aid including recognising common senior emergencies. »» Exercise review and outcomes and a celebration in the final week. The next Stay Standing course will begin at Indooroopilly on July 19. Another course will be held at Ashgrove, starting October 11. To find out more phone Jubilee Community Care on 3871 3220.

REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS ESSENTIAL Growing old does not mean exercise becomes something you used to do. Exercise should continue to be a part of everyday life. According to an article by AusMed, an online education platform for health professionals, people who do regular physical activity have: • Up to a 35% lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, and up to a 50% lower risk of type 2 diabetes; • Up to an 83% lower risk of osteoarthritis and up to a 68% lower risk of hip fracture; and • A 30% lower risk of falls (among older adults); and up to a 30% lower risk of depression and dementia. Exercise also leads to increased energy, better sleep, a reduction in stress and anxiety, improved concentration and confidence, reduced feelings of sadness and isolation, increased body tone, and greater mobility and independence. So how much exercise is recommended for people aged over 65? Queensland Government advice is that provided you are generally healthy and have no limiting health conditions, adults 65 years or older should try to do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most days or, ideally, every day. The 30 minutes can be done all at once or broken into smaller increments, such as three 10-minute sessions per day. If you are not physically active currently, start slowly and gradually build up to the recommended amount. And don’t forget to check with your doctor about suitable activities. Jubilee Community Care has weekly exercise sessions which are individually designed for you by a qualified exercise physiologist/physiotherapist to meet your needs and mobility. Your program is designed to your fitness level. The classes run on Tuesdays and Fridays. Hydrotherapy also is run on Mondays. For more information phone Jubilee on 3871 3220.

NEW AGED CARE STANDARDS COME INTO EFFECT TO ENSURE SAFETY AND WELLBEING The Australian Government has introduced new aged care quality standards that came into effect on July 1. The aim of the standards is to check that people receive good care. Each of the new standards says what a client can expect and service providers need to demonstrate how they are meeting those outcomes. There are eight standards. Each one is about an aspect of care that contributes to your safety, health and wellbeing. The new standards relate to:  Consumer dignity and choice: You should feel that you are treated with dignity and respect, can maintain your identity, make informed choices about your care and services and live the life you choose.  Ongoing assessment and planning with consumers: It is intended that you feel a partner in the ongoing assessment and planning that helps you to receive the care and services that you are eligible for under your program and your need for your health and wellbeing.  Personal care and clinical care: You are receiving personal care and/or clinical care that is safe and right for you.  Services and supports for daily living: You are receiving the services and supports for daily living that are important for your health and wellbeing and that enable you to do the things you want to do.  Organisation’s service environment: Applies to residential care, respite care and day centres. It does not apply to home care services where the environment is the consumer’s home. It also does not apply to other environments that clients visit such as libraries and bowls clubs.  Feedback and complaints: You feel safe, encouraged and supported to give feedback and make complaints, and appropriate action is taken.  Human resources: You receive quality care and services when you need them from people who are knowledgeable, capable and caring.  Organisational governance: You are confident that your service provider is The Jubilee - Jubilee Community Care’s Newsletter

well run and you can provide thoughts and ideas to improve the delivery of care and services. If you believe your care is not up to the standard that you expect, please let us know. Raising concerns is not being difficult. Sometimes things may not be as you like and you have every right to bring concerns to our attention. You can contact Jubilee Community Care by phoning us on 3871 3220 or emailing us at admin@jccagedcare.org.au If you do not feel comfortable talking about service issues with us you can contact an “advocate who can help you to work out your rights and options available to you. Advocates include the Older Persons Advocacy Network (phone 1800 700 600) or Aged and Disability Advocacy Australia (phone 1800 818 338). Complaints also can be made to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission by phoning 1800 951 822.

CLIENTS ENCOURAGED TO RESPOND TO UPDATED CHARTER OF AGED CARE RIGHTS The Federal Government has announced new laws to compel all aged care providers to sign and conform to a single Charter of Aged Care Rights. The new Charter will apply to all care recipients receiving Commonwealthsubsidised aged care services. From July 1, 2019, providers must give consumers a copy of the new Charter signed by the provider, and ensure that the consumer or their authorised person has been given a reasonable opportunity to sign a copy. Jubilee Community Care recognises the importance of this Charter for both consumers and providers to further enhance safety and quality across the industry. The Government has asked service providers to encourage consumers to read and sign the new Charter. Signing or not signing does not impact on your access to services. Your services will continue as normal. Two copies of the Charter signed by Jubilee director Shaun Riley will be posted to clients in July. We will also include a stamped addressed envelope for you to return one signed copy of the Charter (if you wish to sign) to Jubilee Community Care. Please speak to your support worker or phone our office on 3871 3220 if you require any clarification.

VOLUNTEERS RECOGNISED FOR EFFORTS Jubilee honoured its volunteers recently, thanking them for their time and efforts in helping make the organisation all it can be. The volunteers were treated to a ride around South Bank Parklands on pedicabs before having a spin on the Wheel of Brisbane and lunch. Thank you to Melinda, Viji, Heather, Peter, Karilyn, Angela, Jo, Marjorie and Gwen for your kindness and dedication.

CHOOSE DIRECT DEBIT TO MAKE LIFE EASIER The preferred method of paying monthly invoices at Jubilee Community Care is direct debit. This is an arrangement between you and Jubilee whereby your monthly invoice amount is drawn automatically from your bank account on the 28th of each month. This method gives you peace of mind that your bill is paid on time. In order to arrange payment via direct debit please phone Jubilee on 3871 3220. Of course, if direct debit is not available to you, Jubilee still accepts payment of invoices via BPay, cheques through the mail and direct deposit.

STRUGGLING WITH BINS ON GARBAGE DAY? Did you know rubbish bin collection day does not have to be a fight to get your bins down to the kerb? Brisbane City Council has compensations for the elderly and others who struggle to put their bins out for collection. Council can arrange for bin collection from within your property if you are infirm, you have a physical or sensory disability, no able-bodied person lives at your address, and the collection point for your bins will not pose a potential safety risk to staff. To apply for bin collection assistance, phone the council on 3403 8888.

HOW DO YOU CANCEL A JUBILEE SERVICE?

Sometimes appointments, family occasions, holidays or emergencies crop up and you need to cancel a Jubilee Community Care service for a short period. If you wish to cancel a scheduled service please phone our office on 3871 3220. Leave a message if it is unattended.

We do not charge for services when you cancel a pre-arranged service with more than 48 hours notice. For services cancelled within the 48 hours, the charge for the service may apply, as it is unlikely we will find alternative work for your support worker at short notice. Your support worker needs to be paid for their rostered time; this is a contractual obligation of employment.
