Thursday, April 8; 7:30pm Israel, Germany, France 2009 Directors: Sharon Maymon and Erez Tadmor

Herzl joins a diet club with his friends but is sacked after gaining 28lbs in 2 months! To make matters worse the overweight and lovable cook loses his job because of his looks. Determined to overcome their misfortunes, Herzl and his three hefty friends discover sumo wrestling, where being oversized is not only accepted but revered. They start training with a reluctant Zionist Japanese coach. Will they gain his respect and beat the odds? This film is a story of sheer love and unlikely heroes and the winner of four Ophir Awards Guest Speakers: Steve Luxenberg, a Washington Post Associate Editor & author of “Annie’s Ghost” and John Eisenberg, author & sports writer. Co-Sponsored by the Embassy of Israel Honored Guest: Sarit Arbel, Director of Cultural Affairs

For mature audiences Based on the actual transcripts, this spellbinding film uncovers the incredible power struggle that took place between Israeli interrogator Avner Less and Adolf Eichmann after his capture. It fell upon the young Avner to break the will of this formidable and cunning opponent, within the strict guidance of the law. Due to the lack of evidence and in order to assemble a winning case for the upcoming trial, the task was crucial. Avner faces an untenable situation that affects his emotional and personal life. Political and social pressures mount for him to extract Eichmann’s darkest secrets and an admission of guilt. You may be shocked by what led to the infallible evidence. This is not the Eichmann story you knew. The stellar cast includes Troy Garrity, Thomas Kretschmann and Stephen Fry. Guest Speaker: The Honorable Ben Cardin, United States Senator

The Gift To Stalin Tuesday, April 13; 7:30pm Kazakhstan, Poland, Russia, Israel 2008 Director: Rustem Abdrashev

How does Sashka, a Jewish boy in 1949 obtain an audience with Stalin in the hope of being reunited with his family? What happens to the child as he crosses the Kazakh steppes with his grandfather after the ethnic purges is a wondrous and fascinating tale. The stubborn little fighter is rescued by an odd Muslim railroad worker named Kasym who renames the boy Sabyr. Kasym cares for him while preserving his Jewish identity. The welcoming Kazakh village has the poetic charm of distant beauty, a common thread in this unforgettable film. Sabyr encounters difficult times but knows who he is. When he learns about a contest for Stalin’s birthday he also knows what to do. Guest Speaker: Michael Scammell, author of “Koestler” Co-sponsored by the Embassy of Kazakhstan Film Festival continues on page 14

Wisdom For Today By Rabbi Jon Konheim

Counting the Omer This year the whole month of April is included in the Counting of the Omer. Torah commands that we, personally, count the 50 days between Passover and Shavuot. We count them at night and we start during the second Seder. On these days an Omer (approximately 28 cups) of barley was offered up at the Temple in Jerusalem. It is a semi-mourning period when many people refrain from celebrations. There are many reasons given for this period. I will give two that you may not have heard of. In his book, Nature in our Biblical Heritage Nogah Hareuveni describes the period between Passover and Shavuot as a very tense time for our ancestors who were farmers. There was a very narrow range of temperature and humidity that would work for all the varied crops that were growing then. Weather that might be good for the spring grain harvest might be harmful to the fruit crop that would be harvested in the fall. During this time the capricious hamsin (50 in Arabic) winds might scorch all growing things. People refrained from celebrations during this period lest they be premature. Once the 50 days had past and the winter-spring crops had been gathered in everyone could relax and celebrate. The second reason is very different. In Jewish theology becoming a free covenant people was a two step process. The Exodus freed us from Egyptian bondage, but gave us no positive sense of who we are and how we fit in the cosmos. That required the covenant experience at Sinai, 50 days later. At Passover, we are given an undefined freedom that can make us insecure and we long for the security of the covenant which will define that freedom. We count the days until it comes. Omer is a period of both expectation and anxiety. In it we fulfill what the psalmist wrote, “Teach us to number our days that we may attain a heart of wisdom.” Rabbi Jon Konheim of Beth Am Synagogue can be reached at jon@bethambaltimore.org

A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A What is the JCC’s New Mission and Vision? Do you know that place “where everybody knows your name”? Of course, your immediate answer is “Cheers”. But according to Danny Marcus, the same quality that enamored us to that funloving TV bar has kept him, his friends and his family connected to the JCC for so many years. Danny has been a life-long athlete who competed in wrestling, played football & lacrosse in his youth and became an avid runner in his married years. The JCC has been the place where he built strong muscles and perhaps stronger relationships with a tightknit clan of JCC friends. He also cherishes memories of happy times and warm connections made by his family (his wife of 58 years, Adele, and his children Rhonda, Deborah and Stuart) at the JCC. As a member of the JCC’s Board of Trustees, Danny participated in important decisions like the establishment of the Gordon Center For Performing Arts. However, because he has spent so much time at the “J”, he feels his most important contribution to the Board was his ability to represent the average member’s needs. This year marked Danny’s 80th birthday. His kids had already thrown him a party and he was under the impression that the celebrations were behind him. However, it’s no wonder that his JCC family also chose to throw him a big surprise. One night, he and Adele were supposedly going to meet another couple for a late dinner at a local Chinese restaurant. When they followed the server to their table, instead they found a room full of Danny’s JCC workout buddies and running mates. These friends mean so much to him and he was so touched by their gesture. So it will be no surprise to you on any given morning if you find yourself schmoozing with Danny and his friends in the Fitness Center. Just like at Cheers, they quickly learn your name because as Danny says, “It’s what we do.” Written by Abbe Zuckerberg, Membership Coordinator

The Holocaust Survivor Cookbook

Interview With Former JCC Maccabi® ArtsFest Participant, Gabrielle Levin

The Jewish Women’s Circle invites all women and girls to an unforgettable evening with Joanne Caras, author of the famous Holocaust Survivor Cookbook.

Q. What was your role in the first Artsfest?

A. I did musical theater my Gabrielle (right) with first year and hosted two her roommate and other participants. What a ArtsFest participant, Carly Cohen. great week! I am also very proud to have been the first winner of the ArtsFest T-shirt design contest. Q. What is something that you took away from this experience? Do you still keep in touch with friends from ArtsFest?

A. The importance of working together and being with fellow Jews was something very special that I got from this experience. The Jewish community is so important to me and because we all had the same passion it made the week so productive and memorable. Do I still keep in touch?! Maccabi friends are friends for life! I am currently rooming with a friend that I met through ArtFest in my second year! She played guitar for ArtsFest and I am fortunate enough to support her at gigs and jam with her in our room. Another former Maccabi friend goes to Rider College with me. I still keep in touch with a Maccabi friend who lives in Langhorne PA, twenty minutes from my school. I have gone to his home for Shabbat dinner and we visit each other often. I also keep in touch with my host from the second year, he is my good friend! We see each other as well and talk often. I even keep in touch with the Israelis through facebook. If I am lucky enough to go to Israel this summer I will make a serious effort to see my friends from Maccabi there. Q. What are you doing now? Has your experience doing Artsfest played a role in your life?

A. Most definitely. I am still singing and acting. Currently I am majoring in theater and minoring in dance at school. This past summer I sang the National Anthem on my birthday at Camden Yards for an Orioles game. (youtube: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=GUraZTBRiaM).

I Was Accepted at Three Independent Schools. I Chose Cardin. Why? Cardin offers a “pluralistic Jewish education,” meaning one that doesn’t teach the tenets of one denomination over another, but embraces them all. Cardin integrates Jewish values into a college preparatory curriculum. It fits me.

Q. What advice would you give kids who are going to be part of this huge Maccabi experience?

A. Work hard and play hard! These are friends you will have for life. To be able to mix passion and friends with religion and your peers is such an amazing opportunity, so delve in and make the most of it! For more information about ArtsFest, contact Mitch Liebeskind at 410.356.5200 x370 or email mliebeskind@jcc.org.

Joseph & Rebecca Meyerhoff Gallery Gordon Center For Performing Arts

“Works of Brina Bass Pintzuk and Kathleen Strukoff” February 25-March 31

Brina Pintzuk is a landscape painter working in the plein air tradition – painting out of doors. The exhilaration of working outdoors is her muse as well as her challenge as she responds to the fluctuating landscapes. Her paintings are all done with soft pastel on sanded paper or sanded boards. Her inspiration comes from experiencing ordinary places in extraordinary light. Kathleen Strukoff uses a combination of palette knife and vigorous brushwork with bold colors to express her translation of a scene on location. Her love for painting landscapes began as a young girl growing up in New Mexico and being moved by the spectacular vistas and colors that you see in nature. In recent years, she has become obsessed with the spirit and challenge of plein air painting. The Joseph & Rebecca Meyerhoff Gallery is open to those patrons who attend films and performances at the Gordon Center. For more information, or to schedule a gallery tour, contact Nancy Goldberg at 410.356.7469, Press 5 or email ngoldberg@gordoncenter.com

She has also worked with our special needs programs at the JCC for over six years and continues to work there today. “When I first started working in babysitting,” says Sara, “there were some safety concerns that both parents and I had. I have worked hard to make sure that these safety issues are addressed and fixed. That makes me very happy because the safety and happiness of the children are my number one priority. Our numbers have grown tremendously due to this change.” The following are some of the many letters we receive on a regular basis from members who have used our babysitting services in Park Heights.

Out of the many nice things that the JCC has to offer, we are

particularly pleased with the babysitting room. It is spacious, clean, convenient, and highly appropriate. Our daughter is nearly 15 months and she loves it there. When we pick her up she always seems well cared for and happy. We are always greeted nicely and with smiles. The babysitting room is a really great arrangement and in the past couple of months we have certainly taken advantage of it, and I know many others have as well. Owing mostly to your up-and coming babysitting room, together with our pleasant experience, we have resolved to continue our full membership for the coming year. We hope that you will keep on promoting whatever it is that is making the babysitting program such a hit. We are appreciative. Sincerely, Aaron and Tsippy S.

After I had my baby, I thought my body would never be the same again, and that scared me. Before I became a mother, I loved exercising... it feels awesome to be in shape. However, with my baby being so little, I could not imagine leaving her with a stranger just so I could feel good! Then my friends began telling me how great the babysitting is at the JCC and convinced me to try it just once. I remember walking into the building regretting my decision, but the minute I walked into the babysitting room everything changed. Sara welcomed me with such a warm smile and made me feel so comfortable. The room is clean and Sara’s assistants are equally warm and responsible. My baby sensed this and didn’t even cry. Since that day, I have gone to the gym at least four times a week and I feel great! Thank you for having such a wonderful babysitting room that both my daughter and I love. Have a great day, Tova S. A Tribute to Sonia Bodner Written by Jodi Fishman, Director of the Meyerhoff Early Childhood Education program at the Weinberg Park Heights JCC

In 1991, Sonia Bodner began what was to become a long and meaningful journey with the Baltimore JCC as an Teacher’s Assistant in the 4-year-old class when the ECE wing was on the second floor and the only thing we had to “sell” was how great our teachers were. Since that beginning Sonia has taken both personal and professional journey’s she can certainly be proud of and we can all admire her for. In the fall of 2000, Sonia studied hard and took the test in order to become a citizen of the United States. It was an election year and I will never forget the pride she took in casting her first vote. But in a way this moment encompassed who Sonia Bodner is. An incredibly intelligent woman, with the courage to step out of her comfort zone and try something new. Someone who takes everything she does to heart and is always wanting to learn Mary Corton more. In fact, the summer after she became OccupatiOn: BT Lower School a citizen of this country, Sonia took the steps Science teacher necessary to leave the comfort of her many years as EducatiOn: MA Organic Chemistry, assistant teacher and become the lead teacher for Emory U; BS Chemistry, Allegheny College the 4-year-old class. favOritE writEr: James Patterson Thus began another journey for Sonia and in 2007, favOritE musicians: The Police she took on the challenge of working with DJ favOritE athLEtE: Roberto Clemente Jensen the ECE Consultant for the CJE to create a what’s uniquE abOut thE bt model classroom environment that teachers from curricuLum: We are constantly around the community could come and see and evaluating our curriculum & emulate. ASSOCIATED Corner NEVER FORGET: COMMUNITY-WIDE HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY ENSURES THE SURVIVORS’ LEGACY A Tribute to Sonia Bodner (continued)

There is a quotation from the book of Proverbs that says, “Raise up the children in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it.” Sonia Bodner understands at her core the importance of this teaching. She understands that a master Jewish early childhood educator is always growing, learning, and changing. She understands the needs of young children, and she continually challenges herself to be a better teacher. But most of all, she truly believes in the importance of “Raising up the children” and has dedicated her professional life to it, and to our community. Kol HaKavod and Congratulations to Sonia Bodner.

The Arts Nora’s Will

Killing Kasztner: The Jew Who Dealt with Nazis

Thursday, April 15; 7:30pm Mexico 2008 Director: Mariana Chenillo

(not part of the STAR series)

This multi-award winning film story starts with Nora’s suicide just before Passover. Her willful power is very much alive and reigning from the moment her ex-husband José discovers her body. In Nora’s apartment, the Passover table is set meticulously with elaborate instructions for preparing the Seder meal. The family gathers and relives memories and conflicts as they face an absurd situation. Did Nora know that Jewish law forbids burial during Passover and that the body has to be watched continuously? For four long days, they all must eat. The penetrating and ironic psychology of the characters intersects with juicy and dark humor in this very smart Jewish comedy. Guest Speaker: Jonathan L. Shorr, Executive Director, Professor, School of Communications Design, University of Baltimore

Sunday, May 2; 3:00pm U.S. 2008 Director: Gaylen Ross

The Kasztner trial and the scandal that ripped Israel are worthy of a Shakespearian plot. Rezso Kasztner’s negotiations with none other than Adolf Eichmann saved nearly 1,700 Hungarian Jews. Kasztner, in Israel and working for Ben Gurion’s government, was accused of protecting his family and the wealthy and sacrificing everyone else. To clear his name, the government of Israel sued for libel. This trial backfired and inflamed public opinion and political factions, dividing the country. He was condemned in a verdict that he “Sold His Soul to the Devil”. Ultimately, this led to Kasztner’s murder by a Jewish right wing extremist in 1957. The first chilling interview on film with the assassin startles with new revelations. Director, Gaylen Ross places the case and the dilemma in our hands. Was Katzner a hero, a traitor, or simply an ordinary man? Guest Speakers: Gaylen Ross, filmmaker and director, Robert O. Freedman, author and political science professor, Johns Hopkins University

The Arts Wedding Song Tuesday, May 11; 7:30pm France/Tunisia 2008 Director: Karin Albou

For mature audiences Myriam, a Jew, and Nour, a Muslim, are inseparable. They live in the same house in a modest and harmonious Tunisian neighborhood. It’s 1942 and at the age of 16 they share the same dreams of love and happi¬ness. Nour has a steady boyfriend, which is something Myriam yearns to have as well. Nour however, wants to go to school like her friend. While a wedding is arranged for Nour, the Nazis enter and occupy Tunisia. Bitterness grows when Nour’s fiancé is unable to find work and the wedding is postponed. The Muslim population begins to side with the Vichy regime while the Jews are stripped of their rights and possessions. When Myriam’s mother runs out of money, she promises her young and beautiful daughter to a wealthy doctor. This film paints a magnificent and sensual portrait of the friends and of intimate and religious rituals. In the midst of these conflicts, Myriam and Nour are reminded of how much they each still need a true friend. Guest Speaker: Sarah Schenk, producer of “No Job for a Woman” & NY filmmaker Co-sponsored by the Embassy of France

Brothers Thursday, May 14; 7:30pm Switzerland 2008 Director: Igaal Niddam

Nothing could be more joyful than the reunion of brothers after years of silence. Aaron, a prominent lawyer, arrives in Israel from New York to represent Yeshiva students who refuse military service. Dan, a secular Zionist, lives on a kibbutz with his family. Now that they are meeting again, they are strangers of opposite political adherences and convictions. Aaron expect¬ed a simple and expedient trial but instead it explodes in waves of anger on both sides of the issue. The sudden and violent rift that occurs does not spare the rediscovered relationship between the brothers. Old grudges resurface. The re-opened debate of which convictions are the right ones to further the good of Israel subtly mirrors the painful conflict between Aaron and Dan. Beneath the ache and animosity they search for reassurance of brotherly love. Guest Speaker: Igaal Niddam, filmmaker and director, and panelist Rabbi Jay Goldstein, Beth Israel Congregation Co-sponsored by the Embassy of Switzerland

William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe (*not part of the STAR Series)

Monday, May 17; 7:00pm *At Chizuk Amuno Congregation United States 2009 Directors and filmmakers: Emily and Sarah Kunstler

Celebrated and highly controversial, the grand civil rights lawyer of the 60’s and 70’s changed the face of American justice. Anger and hate followed Kunstler everywhere. It erupted when he fought for civil rights with Martin Luther King, because of the Attica trial, the Chicago Eight and because he represented rapists and murderers alike. This provocative and mesmerizing film by his daughters Emily and Sarah, looks back at the tumultuous times and at the groundbreaking trials with newly found facts and in a new context. What drove the young man, born Jewish, to take on the legal system in defense of unpopular causes? Brilliant and undeterred, he won cases and gave new relevance to social justice and civil rights.
