Your Center for Jewish Life Wisdom for Today Rabbi Andrew Busch –Baltimore Hebrew I don’t drink coffee. I never have, despite liking the smell of coffee. However, I love meeting people for a cup of coffee. Sharing a conversation over a cup of coffee is one of my favorite things to do as a rabbi. Getting to know people, hearing their thoughts, concerns, and hopes - these are among the most important things that anyone who works in the Jewish community can do. Yes, I lead worship services, officiate at weddings and funerals, teach classes, attend meetings, and attend to numerous other responsibilities. However, at the core of what I do is sharing a cup of coffee. Over the years, many other rabbis and I have reached towards this conversational priority because we have been influenced by Martin Buber’s philosophy, because someone once reached out to us over coffee, and because we sensed it was a significant way to build Jewish community and identity. We also enjoy it. Now we have some additional evidence to support this conversational approach. (Please note: I said conversational, not controversial.) Synagogue 3000 describes itself as “a catalyst for excellence, empowering congregations and communities to create synagogues that are sacred and vital centers of Jewish life.” (www. synagogue3000.org). This organization has been influential and thought-provoking since it was previously known as Synagogue 2000. This past March, Synagogue 3000 released a report encouraging us to explore this conversational, or as they call it, relational, approach to Jewish life. The report was part of a larger effort to understand contemporary Jewish life and how it can be strengthened. If you go to their website, you can read the report, which includes the following statements by key leaders, Rabbi Larry Hoffman and Rabbi Aaron Spiegel: “It’s not about the programs we offer,” and “People want relationships.” Don’t get me wrong. For the JCC, for synagogues, for any organization, programmatic offerings matter. However, in the long run and throughout our long history, it has been the relationships that really matter. On some level, even when leading a service or a Torah discussion, what we are also doing is building relationships. Those relationships are between me and whoever is sitting in the next chair, be they a congregational member or not. A rabbi friend of mine called it “building a Jewish community one cup of coffee at a time.” Those cups of coffee are shared over coffee, over lunch, and, as I mentioned, over study and other activities. There is much to be said about the meaningful impact of Judaism and most of it begins over coffee. Or in my case, over a cup of tea, sometimes iced tea. Rabbi Andrew Busch is a rabbi at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation. He can be reached at abusch@bhcong.org.

Camp Cody Contributes In 1926 the Axman family of Baltimore started up a residential camp in West Ossipee, New Hampshire named Camp Cody. Camp Cody soon became one of the premier sleep-away camps for affluent Jewish families in the area. This past April, Dick and Bob Axman, children of the founder, along with fellow campers, Herb Kasoff and Chuck Klein met with JCC President, Buddy Sapolsky, to share how their camping experience impacted their lives. They topped off the meeting by giving the JCC a donation from fellow Cody campers of $2500. As Mr. Kasoff explained it, “We raised this money because we want other Jewish kids in Baltimore to have a memorable summer camp experience like we did.”

The 2012 JCC Jr. Maccabi Games took place Sunday, May 20 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with 49 boys and girls from Baltimore participating. One of our girls basketball teams placed second and all of the teams made it to the playoffs, including girls and boys basketball, boys soccer, swimming and tennis.

We Get Letters… I wanted to express my gratitude to the JCC teens for putting together The Glass Slipper Boutique. I did not think I would have the opportunity to wear a beautiful dress to my senior prom. One day I hope to help other girls in a similar way. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for enabling young girls like myself to enjoy an evening with their friends. Sincerely Yours, C. Tyson ~ New Town High ‘12

March of the Living A few weeks ago, I returned from the March of the Living. This two week trip takes teens to Poland over Holocaust Memorial Day and then to Israel to experience Israel Memorial Day and Israel Independence Day. The actual March itself consisted of 15,000 participants and took place on Holocaust Memorial Day. During our time in Poland, we visited four concentration camps: Auschwitz, Berkinau, Treblinka, and Majdanek. Auschwitz has been turned into a museum, most of Berkinau is either in ruins or has been rebuilt for the movie “Schindler’s List”, and Treblinka was a death camp that is now a memorial. Majdanek hit me the hardest–it is completely intact and can be up and running in 48 hours. Seeing what the Jews endured during the Holocaust and then going straight to our homeland of Israel was an experience of a lifetime. The lessons I learned from the March of the Living are priceless and they will help me bear witness once there are no more survivors to tell their stories. ~ Tracey Pyser, MOTL ’12

This spring, The Glass Slipper Boutique at the OM JCC collected and distributed prom dresses for area teens in need. This community service project was started by local BBYO teen member, Alex Meyer. BBYO teens (above) show off the dresses they collected for the Glass Slipper Boutique

They are friends outside of class now and even organized a pre-Passover lunch together in the JCC Board Room! The physical benefits of the class also carry over to their everyday life. Arlene Abrams who helps run Adult Enrichment classes at the JCC, came close to having knee surgery before she started taking Water Aerobics. “When I first began this class, I could barely move,” admits Arlene. “This is a fun way to do the exercise that I needed to get my mobility back.” One participant says that her Physical Therapists could not believe the dramatic improvements she made after consistently attending this class. “We encourage each other,” says another attendee. “No one is judging and everyone goes at their own pace. Barak’s hiring is the result of an extensive nationwide search and review process that was conducted by Past Chairmen of the Board, current JCC leadership and community leaders. Barak will work with Buddy during the three-month transition. “It’s an incredible opportunity to follow Buddy’s wonderful leadership and work in a cohesive and dynamic Jewish community where the JCC plays a fundamental role in Jewish life! It’s an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” explains Barak. Buddy is excited that Barak will be taking on this role, “I have known Barak for approximately 10 years and I’m incredibly excited about his skills, expertise and passion, and I’m confident our members will feel the same way.”

Associated Corner Meet Mel: Weinberg Village Resident Mel says he’s a kibitzer. He can talk to you about anything – Bingo, the weather, the garden in his back yard. He just likes to schmooze. He has the friends he wants to talk to and the activities to keep him active, thanks to his home in THE ASSOCIATED’s Weinberg Village. Mel and his wife, Lillian, moved into Weinberg Village in Owings Mills 2008. “We were living in our daughter’s home,” he says, “but her children were having children and they needed more rooms. Moving to Weinberg Village was the best thing we ever did.” Mel had heard about Weinberg Village from his friends, who described it as a fine place to live with fine activities. What Mel and his wife discovered is that Weinberg Village offers seniors, “luxurious apartments at the right price. … We have never been dissatisfied.” Mel laughs at the idea that he is aging, but admits he is about to push past 85. He says he feels young because he’s active and his Weinberg Village lifestyle is what makes it possible. Mel’s in charge of Bingo night and he’s on the board. He meets lots of new friends from his own age group through Eating Together and other social programs, many of which are run by the JCC. He also feels secure knowing that the nurses and other professionals are there to ensure he stays healthy and safe. “My wife and I are just as happy as we can be,” says Mel. “Thank you ASSOCIATED. I hope that all Jews in Baltimore are ASSOCIATED – we are!” THE ASSOCIATED recently expanded its social services in the Owings Mills area. In April, the Baltimore County office of Jewish Community Services (JCS) moved into larger quarters in the newly constructed wing of the Rosenbloom Owings Mills Jewish Community Center, accessible from the main level of the JCC. JCS professionals will provide counseling for adults, children and families, career services, assistance for seniors and caregivers, and much more! Check out the new facility and learn more about JCS at www.jcsbaltimore.org.

A Tribute to our JCC Employees of the Month: Howard Bauer, who schedules our van usage at the “J”, has been more than accommodating in helping us get JCC mailings out on time. He always manages to find a way to solve any scheduling dilemma and he does it in a professional and kind manner. Neil Ogle, who works in building maintenance at Camp Milldale, is always ready to help no matter when we need him. Recently, we found ourselves without a van driver during a busy week. Neil came through to help make sure things ran smoothly, even though he was scheduled to be on vacation. Sharon Seigel really stepped up to help at the PH JCC when we were short staffed this season. She manned the desk in the ECE and made sure that each parent and child was greeted with a smile. She has gone above and beyond and we really appreciate her help!

JCC ECE recognized in Washington, D.C. On May 9, 2012, the First Lady’s Let’s Move! Child Care initiative recognized the Healthy Choices program at the Stoler ECE for its exceptional work to promote young children’s health and prevent childhood obesity. The Stoler ECE was the one of twelve in the entire nation to be recognized as Early Education and Child Care Program and Network Honorees. At the recognition luncheon in D.C., White House Assistant Chef and Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives, Sam Kass, gave the keynote remarks and highlighted some of our Healthy Choices activities. Chris Sigman was also selected to participate in a panel discussion during the event.
