A Summer Like Never Before Thousands of campers have passed through JCC summer camps over the years, taking wonderful memories home with them. Their parents have come to expect great things from programs like Noah’s Ark, TNT and Camp Milldale. That said… THIS summer is going to top them all! New and expanded programs offer exciting opportunities for campers of all ages. Those who choose Milldale are in for a treat, as our new Camp Director, Amy Bram, will make new and exciting changes to this special place. So read on… and find the camp that will make this summer one to remember!
Big Changes For Milldale! Day Camp & Visual Arts Camp June 23-Aug. 15, 2-8 week options Making changes to a summer camp can be a touchy business. People love their camps. New Milldale Director Amy Bram gets this, but she still has some big changes planned. Most of them won’t be seen with your eyes… but campers and staff will feel them with their hearts. Amy has three specific areas she plans to work on. First, music will be at the center of all camp activities. Amy wants every part of the day to be an event. Even bus rides, meals and transition times can be full of camp songs. The second focus is on the staff. Amy knows that those who decide to work at a camp do so because they like being with the kids, but she says they don’t always get the support and training to make the experience meaningful. This year staff will have the resources to enrich the camp experience for themselves and the children. Training in team-building and conflict resolution will be valuable tools far beyond camp.
Milldale campers will have more time to find activities they love and focus on them. Amy is dividing the day into four pillars: aquatics, athletics, arts & culture and sustainability. Each pillar will have a specialist overseeing the staff. Campers will have more opportunities to try sports… from gaga to archery, or the arts like performing and crafts. Once they find their passion, older campers will have a chance to choose their own electives. Finally, Jewish values and culture will continue to be woven into all aspects of camp from Israeli programming to singing Jewish songs to incorporating Hebrew language to celebrating Shabbat on Friday afternoons. (for more news about JCC Camps see page 8)

Junior Maccabi Comes to Baltimore! Sunday, May 4, 2014
On the first Sunday in May, more than 600 young Jewish athletes, ages 10 to 12, will converge on the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC to compete in the Junior Maccabi Games. This is the first time Baltimore will host this Olympic-style event, and we are thrilled to welcome youth from as far north as Rockland, New York and as far south as Virginia Beach. Boys and girls from as many as 26 JCCs will compete in baseball, basketball, soccer, swimming, table tennis and tennis. Organizers of the Jr. Maccabi Games hope this special day will get Jewish pre-teens excited, and prime them for bigger competition in the JCC Maccabi Games when they get older. JCC Maccabi Experience Director, Paul Lurie, says this is not only a great chance to show off what wonderful things we can do in Baltimore, but to give kids an experience they will never forget. “It’s a great opportunity for pre-Maccabi athletes to experience an all Jewish competition and to socialize with their peers from across the region,” says Lurie. Lurie also says he strongly believes in the power of Jewish experiences for teens. All Jr. Maccabi athletes are required to participate in one community service project. This year it’s J-Serve: National Teen Day of Service on April 6th. Athletes need to be between the ages of 10 and 12 on May 1st to participate. Tryouts will be held at the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC on March 2nd and 9th. There are also plenty of volunteer opportunities for adults. You can help out as a greeter or scorekeeper. “We also need parkers, people to help service lunch and many other jobs throughout the event.” says Lurie.
2014 JCC Maccabi Experience The JCC Maccabi Experience is a combination of the JCC Maccabi Games and JCC Maccabi Artsfest. This is the world’s largest gathering of Jewish teenagers with nearly 5,000 competitors from around the globe. The Maccabi Games started in 1982 in Memphis, Tennessee. It is a week long, Olympic style sports competition for teens between the ages of 13-16. JCC Maccabi ArtsFest debuted here in Baltimore in 2006. It is a week long arts experience for creative Jewish teens ages 13-17. Baltimore is proud to be one of the largest traveling delegations, sending almost 200 teens every year. Participants must try-out or audition. If you are selected, you must be a JCC member to compete.

Fitness & Recreation WORKING OUT FOR WELLNESS MEET CHEMDI LEWIS Getting to the gym isn’t always about shedding pounds. For Chemdi Lewis it was just the opposite. As a new Cardiac Sonographer, she must hold equipment against her patients’ ribs to capture images of their hearts. This can be very physically demanding work. Some patients are very large… Lewis is not. Only a short time into her career she realized something had to change, or she would have to find another job. Her muscles were killing her; she had knots everywhere and her mood worsened by the day. She turned to the JCC for help. First she started with a BodyPump class once a week, using very small weights. As she got stronger, she asked the Park Heights personal trainers for help. They taught her how to strengthen her core, and how to engage her bigger muscle groups while scanning patients. After just 7 months, Lewis has put on 10 pounds of muscle and has noticed a tremendous improvement in her scanning endurance. She works out three to four times a week, and says she is even thinking about becoming a trainer herself!
MEET HADASSAH NORMAN Hadassah Norman spent most of her life dabbling in exercise. Some gym time here and there, a stint on the swim team in high school… but she never really found a place for working out in her busy life. This is a woman who never sits still. She runs a mentoring program for teens in the city, is pursuing her masters degree full time and still finds time to help at shul and in her community. After returning from a year in Israel, she started slowly with a weekly BODYSTEP class, and she’s not afraid to say she hated every minute of it! It took everything she had to get up and get into the gym. After a little while, she realized she wasn’t dreading her time at the gym anymore. In fact, she looked forward to it. Now she works out about three times a week, and depends on the energy and confidence it brings her. Hadassah says you have to give yourself what you need so you can be more productive. She says, “especially on weeks where I am extremely busy it makes me feel empowered, free, like I can tackle anything hard that comes along.”

Heart disease is still the number one killer of women… higher than breast and lung cancer combined. Knowing your family history and being aware of the potential symptoms is key. Studies also show that exercise and the right diet can yield hearty health benefits. Here are some tips on daily food choices from the American Heart Association that might lower your risk of having a heart attack: • Build meals and snacks around fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, poultry, fish and nuts. • Choose lean meats and poultry without skin and prepare them without added saturated and trans fat. • Cut back on foods containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils to reduce trans fat in your diet. • Cut back on foods high in dietary cholesterol. Aim to eat less than 300 milligrams of cholesterol each day. • Cut back on beverages and foods with added sugars. • Choose and prepare foods with little or no salt. Aim to eat less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day. • If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation. That means one drink per day if you’re a woman and two drinks per day if you’re a man. Follow the American Heart Association recommendations when you eat out and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Don’t smoke tobacco — and stay away from tobacco smoke.

Northwest Neighbors Connecting When Ellen Glickman wanted to find something for her mother to engage in, she discovered Northwest Neighbors Connecting (NNC), a new initiative of CHAI: Comprehensive Housing Assistance, Inc. The program, which relies on volunteers, provided her mother with activities and an overall connection to the community. Along the way, Glickman became caught up in the program too. She decided to volunteer, attending meetings, giving seniors rides and suddenly making new friends. One of those seniors, Estelle, specifically sought out Glickman, asking her to drive her to her weekly hair appointment. In addition to these weekly salon trips, Glickman also takes Estelle to the library and the bank. They even meet for lunch. “We try to do this once a month so we can just sit and talk and enjoy each other’s company.” Operating in the Glen, Cheswolde, Cross Country and Fallstaff neighborhoods of Northern Park Heights, NNC is an innovative “village” model, similar to others springing up across the country. The goal is to ensure that seniors can remain comfortably in their home communities as long as possible. Seniors pay a small annual fee, based on a sliding scale, to help fund these programs and services. “Our vision is to have somewhere for seniors to turn to for any possible issue they need addressed,” says Risyl Edelman, NNC director. “If they need something schlepped, help with their computer, or a ride – we want to be there for them.” “There is so much potential for this to help older adults live vibrant lives in this community,” adds Mitch Posner, executive director of CHAI, “and we are grateful that The Associated helped seed this project. With the baby boomer population expanding, the potential positive impact of this program is enormous.” As for Glickman, there is no doubt that volunteering has been a rewarding experience. Not only is she doing a mitzvah, but she has made a good friend. “The people I have met at NNC meetings are committed to helping each other. They are all wonderful people. And I’m so thrilled -- I’ve made a new friend.” To learn about membership or to volunteer, contact NNC at 410-662-6620 or email nncbaltimore@gmail. com for more information.
