Welcome Dear Member, I hope by now you have noticed our new Kvell (Cheer) & Kvetch (complain) boxes in our lobbies and Early Childhood Education (ECE) centers. We’ve received some great feedback so far. Keep those ideas coming! We are committed to providing our members and guests with positive experiences every day at the J. Here is a Kvell we recently received from a member in Park Heights: “Thank you for the beautiful new dressing room for ladies. You did a beautiful job and I feel like a queen! Thank you for acting on our suggestions in such a timely fashion.” I also have some things to Kvell about and I hope after you read this you will feel compelled to Kvell about your JCC as well. Every day we strive to make mitzvot (good deeds) happen at the JCC, and we couldn’t do it without you! Did you know that your membership dollars help us to touch the lives of thousands of people in our community? In addition to the generous financial support we get from The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore, we also utilize a percentage of the funds we receive from membership to provide scholarships to individuals and families with limited resources. Because of your support these families are able to expose their children to meaningful Jewish experiences in our Camps, ECE and JCC Maccabi program. Your membership also enables us to provide award-winning programming for youth, teens and adults with special needs - benefitting both the individuals and their families. In addition your support makes it possible to provide creative and relevant programming for older adults living in Weinberg Village and in several of the apartments lining Park Heights Avenue. Because of your JCC membership these seniors are living fuller, more engaged lives. These are just some of the good deeds you help provide every day through your JCC membership. Thanks for allowing us to build a more relevant JCC and a stronger Jewish community. In the coming months, we will be offering new programs while continuing to enhance our current array of services. I encourage you to bring your friends in for a test drive – we’ve got some great deals in our Member get a Member campaign, see page 3 for details.

In addition to new equipment upgrades in our Fitness Center we have also completely renovated our Men’s and Women’s locker rooms with new carpeted flooring in the locker area, new tiling in the shower and dressing area, new granite counter tops and modern lighting fixtures around our mirrors, all paired with bold new colors on the walls to give our facilities a sophisticated new look. Come see them for yourself and tell us what you think! Next up in Park Heights… a redesign of our former Check Point area. This new home for Member and Guest Services will soon be more welcoming and user friendly. Aren’t you glad we removed the glass doorways?

Arts & Culture

Coming this February:

At the Gordon Center for Performing Arts on October 29, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz announced a new joint initiative by the Baltimore County Commission on Arts & Sciences in partnership with the Gordon Center and Baltimore County’s dance community called “Take a Leap,” a month-long Baltimore County Dance Celebration to be held during the month of February 2014. This first-ever event will feature dance performances, films, workshops, artist residencies, and classes for dancers at all skill levels. Ballet, contemporary, global, ragtime, swing dance and more will be highlighted at several locations around the county including the Gordon Center. “Many classes and performances will be free or at nominal cost, making it affordable to get out and try something new,” added County Executive Kamenetz. Highlights of the celebration include the international troupe Company E, with a performance from their contemporary repertoire and a “Jungle Book” matinee, which will include dancers from Towson University Community Dance. Company E dancers will serve as artists in residence at ten Baltimore County middle and high schools for an entire week. “Baltimore County has gathered our rich and varied dance community together to create dozens of opportunities to ‘take a leap.’ This is a wonderful new addition to Baltimore County’s arts scene,” said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz.

Jcc SUMMER CampS

Camp Milldale Has a New Director Introducing Amy Bram Amy Bram has been living and breathing camp for more than 20 years. When asked what is the coolest thing you’ve done in this impressive career, she answers, “Getting to be a camp director. Camp directing is my calling!” Amy discovered that calling at a young age. She grew up in Wisconsin and says her parents went to camp and wanted the same for her. The only challenge was which one? She skipped around many different camps for years, never making those strong, lasting camp connections. Until, she says, “My Rabbi conned me into Jewish camp and I fell in love!” Since that summer Amy has dedicated herself to Jewish camps across the country, from California to New York and Georgia, including Camp Ramah, and Camps Airy & Louise. The plan now, is to take all of her “ruach”, her great spirit, and mold Camp Milldale into a camp that shapes children’s lives. “I am so passionate about day camp. People have to know that all of that magic, the bonding, is not limited to overnight camps.” Amy wants her campers to experience that magic while finding their own Jewish identities. Her first step is making music a focal point. She knows how to use music to inspire connection. “I’m the kind of person who sings, jumps around, gets excited- it’s contagious!” Amy will also focus on staff engagement. There will be training and planning well before the campers get off the bus. “I don’t want bunk time to be the same old thing every week. We want to add creativity to bunk and specialty programming to ensure that each week is unique.” Amy’s goal is for our campers to get off the bus each day filled with stories that will delight their parents.
