Welcome Dear JCC Members, We are thrilled to share with you all the new upgrades and program offerings coming to both JCC’s in the weeks and months ahead. If you haven’t visited us for a while, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. One of the first things you’ll notice on your next visit is the changes in our fitness centers. In addition to new floor layouts, designed to provide more opportunities for conditioning and functional training, we are also bringing in 43 new pieces of cutting edge cardio and strength equipment (between our two buildings.) This is a great time to start working with a personal trainer so that you can really get the most out of this equipment. Many of you have seen the new carpeting and colors in our Owings Mills locker rooms but our Park Heights folks are going to love the total overhaul and upgrades to our Ladies and Men’s locker rooms. These are scheduled to be completed by late September/early October, with minimal inconvenience during the construction process. By now many of you have received our beautiful Gordon Center brochure for the 2013-2014 season. We think you’ll be blown away by the lineup of world-class talent that ranges from musical sensations, David Broza and Seldom Scene to nationally recognized family entertainment, comedians and dance ensembles. To learn more about our theater season, which opens October 12, visit our new Gordon website, www.gordon.com.

We have just wrapped up another great camp season and we already have lots of exciting plans for summer 2014. Get ready for a new performing arts camp and a sports camp, both of which will operate out of our Owings Mills JCC. In addition we will be enhancing our sports programming at Camp Milldale and growing our newest sports camp for 4 and 5 year olds in Noah’s Ark. Stay tuned for more camp news in the months ahead. We are continually thinking of ways to grow our offerings so that we can be a hub for Jewish life in our community. To that end this fall we will be partnering with The Associated for a week-long celebration of Russian culture which kicks off on October 12 with a show at the Gordon concert starring child prodigy, and son of Jewish Russian immigrants, Ethan Bortnick. This fall guide is packed with opportunities for you to enrich your life while also finding meaningful engagement with others in our warm and supportive JCC community. We are committed to ensuring that your time at the J is the best part of your day. When it’s not, please let us know so we can fix it! Wishing all of you a happy and healthy Jewish new year. May this year 5758, and our program year which runs 2013-14, be a year of health and happiness for you and your families. L’shanah Tovah, Barak

Fitness News NEW! Release Your Muscles with SMRTCORE™ Are you plagued by stiffness after a long day of sitting? Are your muscles sore after you work out? How would you like to get a solid workout while getting a selfmassage? We now have a class that can help you loosen your stiff muscles while also providing exercises that strengthen and tone them as well. Last February, our Fitness and Wellness Director, Amy Schwartz , learned about a revolutionary new class using the The Grid™ Foam Roller. After taking the class, she decided to bring it to the JCC. “I wanted everyone to experience the great after effects that I found when taking this class.” she said. In fact, SMRT-CORE™ was created to help relieve the pain caused by fibromyalgia. Cassidy Phillips is a certified personal trainer who, when diagnosed with the condition, dedicated himself to researching treatment options through
Register Online www.jcc.org/register
exercise. In his research, he discovered trigger point therapy, which involves massaging key areas of the body indicated in fibromyalgia to release the tension it causes. However, it can be difficult to practice these massage techniques by oneself. Phillips, therefore, developed the GRID™ roller along with other massage products, educational materials and techniques. Physical therapists have found it to be very helpful for people with back problems. Amy recommends it for any muscle aches and pains and says, “It is a great way to release the tension in your body.” The JCC is proud to offer two classes using this revolutionary product. The SMRT-CORE™ classes will help you utilize the full potential of the foam roller. For details on these one hour classes see page 11 and 13. Not only is the GRID™ Foam roller being used for group fitness classes, but it’s also being used by the JCC’s personal trainers. For more information, contact Amy Schwartz at 410.559.3534.

Swimming Lesson Policy Sometimes the pool becomes unavailable for swimming lessons due to circumstances beyond our control. If the pool is unavailable for swimming lessons due to inclement weather or health & safety related issues; our instructors will conduct a land-based session including either water safety and/or land-based stroke drills at the instructor’s discretion. Make-up lessons will not be scheduled if a water session needs to be missed for one of these reasons. The JCC does not provide refunds for missed water sessions.

Season 2013-2014
Opening Night at The Gordon With Ethan Bortnick Saturday, October 12, 8:30pm
Ethan Bortnick,
a child prodigy and piano virtuoso, who rivals any star born from America’s Got Talent or American Idol, started playing on a toy piano when he was three. Now 13, Ethan, a piano prodigy, holds the Guinness World Record for being the youngest musician to host a solo concert tour. Not only is he a young recording artist, but also a young philanthropist who raises money for numerous causes. In fact, Bortnick joined notable icons Celine Dion, Black Eyed Peas, Justin Bieber, and Elton John as the youngest in a lineup that recorded “We Are The World 25” for Haiti. While he may be young, Bortnick is a stellar performer who will astound any audience with his virtuosity. When he first started picking out melodies on his toy piano, he began begging his parents for formal lessons on a real piano and readily picked up composers such. as Beethoven, Mozart, jazz pianist Bill Evans, Little Richard, and Elton John. By age five, he began writing his own songs and by nine appeared on Oprah, where he was named one of Oprah’s All Time Smartest, Most Talented Kids. Bortnick’s musical repertoire evokes a diverse sensibility and a plethora of tastes not usually present in a thirteen-yearold. Onstage, he performs jazz, classical, rock n roll, and his own memorable originals. He has the musical equivalent of a photographic memory and is able to instantaneously pull up songs to dazzle an audience, dependent upon its particular tastes. Sets can range from Beethoven, to the Beatles, to Justin Bieber. Ethan completed shooting a full-length feature film called Anything Is Possible which will be released in September, 2013. He co-wrote all of the songs in the film and scored all the background music. Ethan will star as Nathan, the main character, and the touching tale will reflect Ethan’s sense of optimism and his commitment to bring warmth and happiness to kids and families worldwide. Bortnick is the son of Ukranian immigrants and remains humble about his achievements. His performance is the opening of a Russian Festival that is being hosted by The Associated: The Jewish Federation of Baltimore. For details on upcoming Gordon Shows visit www.gordoncenter.com.

JEWS ON THE MOVE: Baltimore and the Suburban Exodus, 1945-1968 “Our people are moving from the overcrowded cities to the spacious suburbs.”
Rabbi Israel Goldman, Chizuk Amuno Congregation Baltimore Jewish Times, September 1955
In the span of a single generation, Baltimore’s Jewish community became suburban. The decades following World War II saw a nationwide rush to suburbia. American Jews enthusiastically joined in this movement, dispersing to places like Levittown or Scarsdale outside New York City, Park Forest or Skokie outside Chicago. Unlike Jews in other cities, Baltimore’s Jewish families settled en masse in a single section of the metro area: northwest. Today, four out of five Jews remain concentrated in greater northwest Baltimore. Powerful forces came together to create this sudden and lasting change. Jews on the Move reveals how an urban people swiftly became suburban. It’s a national story—with a local twist.

Early Childhood Education A New Atelier Blossoms from the Reggio Curriculum at the Meyerhoff ECE
a workshop space in the school that resembles a black box style theatre with separated sections for students to focus on numerous creation modes, such as art, theater, clay works, and other aspects of educational enrichment. Price says that students will be looking at facets such as shape, material, color, three-dimensional work, the uses of light and dark, and how tools are used to change substances. The children become part of the creation of community (Kehillah) in the process. Tzelem Elohim and Hit’orerut (divine image and amazement) come into play in that both self-image and inquiry work in the process of creating in any medium. Price says teachers will be trained to elicit individual inquiry of the students and then allow for reflection; the teachers will give only prompts and make suggestions so that the child gains ownership of the product. The key element is the process of learning by creating art.
When it comes to education at the Meyerhoff Early Childhood Education Center (ECE) in Park Heights, Director, Zac Price and his staff have taken the ideas of two learning perspectives and merged them into an organic and unique JCC learning philosophy. These perspectives parallel a set of criteria established by the Park Heights ECE staff, which include five precise focus areas: Kehillah, which mean community, Tzelem Elohim, which means divine image, Hit’orerut, which means amazement, D’rash, which means interpretation, and Masa, which means journey. These Jewish values essentially express the embodiment of the ECE. To further these values, Price is introducing an atelier, which is French for “workshop.” In English the word is used in reference to artists’ workshops, where a principal master and a number of assistants, students, and apprentices work together, producing pieces that go out in the master’s name. This modern atelier uses the mentor approach to a small number of students. As mentors, teachers will be using

Art education is extremely valuable for young children say the experts at Americans for the Arts. “It stimulates and develops the imagination and critical thinking, and refines cognitive and creative skills.” In the ECE our students will also learn to experiment with cause and effect and engage in a cycle of inquiry with their mentors. This idea falls in line with D’rash , where both the teacher and the student place equal emphasis on the answers while allowing each to explore expectations and preconceptions. Price says, “Once children engage in the process of learning about art, they therefore learn about the world.” This idea equals a sense of craftsmanship, quality task performance, and goal-setting— skills needed to succeed in the classroom and beyond (Americans for the Arts). According to Price, the atelier is a perfect complement to the Reggio Emilia Approach followed by our school. This curriculum was developed after WWII in Italy by teacher Loris Malaguzzi. It is based on the interests of the children through a self-guided curriculum. The focus is on the principles of respect, responsibility, and community through exploration and discovery in a supportive and enriching environment.

An individually targeted curriculum is designed to meet the needs of each child. Subject areas include reading, math, language arts, science and social studies, Healthy Choices, Hebrew language, and Jewish culture and values. Our program also includes physical education, swimming, music, art and computers. An early drop-off option is available beginning at 7:00am. Late pick up is available through the JCC Kids Center program.
These programs are offered at both the Park Heights and Owings Mills JCC and provide children ages two through five with a well-rounded, age-appropriate curriculum. Experienced and certified early childhood education teachers engage children in activities designed to develop emotional, social, cognitive, physical and spiritual growth. Children gain selfconfidence, develop friendships, and explore new concepts. Activities include: outside play, music, art, circle time, Hebrew, story time, science, cooking, physical education, swimming and creative play. We also introduce children to the customs and traditions of Jewish life, including culture, ethics, Shabbat celebrations and holidays.
At Owings Millls the Healthy Choices curriculum and it’s participation in Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Childcare Initiative- has been recognized by the Center of Disease Control and Kathleen Sebelius, United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, as one of the top twelve schools in the country for its positive impact on the health destiny of the children in this program whom it serves. Our students learn about “sometimes” foods and “anytime” foods by following the new Food Plate. They also learn about portions, vitamins, minerals and the benefits of physical activity. By eating together as a group, family-style, children take charge of how much and what they eat. They are encouraged to recognize when they are hungry and when they are full. With daily activities and lessons focused on eating right and getting exercise our students are learning wellness skills that will empower them to make healthy choices throughout their life.

After School Program for Middle Schoolers
Jordyn Davidson working with preschoolers during TNT.
The JCC is proud to announce its new after school program for sixth through eighth graders called TNT University. This program grew out of the summer TNT program which focuses on self-discovery, community service, leadership, and fellowship for rising teens. Headed by Bradley Kerxton, TNT University promises to be as full of fun and learning as the summer program. TNT University will be based in the teen lounge at the Owings Mills JCC. Each week, teens will have the option of choosing electives such as homework assistance, volunteering as an aide for the preschool, taking fitness classes or dance classes, instruction in weight training, playing sports and creating arts and crafts. Once a week, the teens will participate in a team-building workshop. Besides the electives and workshops, monthly special events, such as pizza parties, movie days and scavenger hunts will be offered as a reward for teens’ successful participation in the program. The daily schedule from Monday to Thursday consists of arrival time between 3:00 and 3:30 pm, allowing time for homework. The first elective runs from 3:30-4:30; elective two from 4:30-5:30, and then social time is scheduled from 5:30-6:00 with pickup by 6:00 pm. The unique aspect of this schedule is that parents can select one to four days per week for a monthly fee. The JCC will provide transportation from Franklin Middle School. Transportation to Har Sinai and Beth Israel congregations will be provided on Tuesdays. Transportation and activities are included in the monthly fee. Parents can relax knowing that their child is in good hands.

Kerxton says that TNT University is the start of a movement; in fact, he calls it “an empire.” This is not an empire of small proportions either, in Kerxton’s opinion; rather it is the start of a solid foundation for youth. And he is correct. Over 20 years ago, Reed Larson wrote in American Psychologist that the motivation and concentration levels of young people are much higher in informal youth programs than they are in school (or when hanging out with friends), suggesting the untapped power in youth development programs that can positively impact school performance. Learning from one another is not the only benefit of TNT; part of the University is helping each other with homework. It is interesting to note that students who participate in programs such as this have higher grade averages and scores in reading, spelling, history, science, and social studies (Arbreton, A., Sheldon, J. and Herrera, C., 2005) In fact, the ACT Policy Report indicates that 78% of students start exploring career opportunities in middle school and with programs that immerse students in leadership workshops, community service projects, and team building exercises, parents can expect their child to be enriched in ways that will affect them well into the future. TNT University starts as low as $100/month for two afternoons a week. For more information, contact Brad Kerxton at 410.559.3547 or bkerxton@jcc.org. You can also visit www.jcc.org/tntuniversity.
