Camp Shlichim Bring Israeli Flavor To Baltimore We are excited to welcome seven Shlichim to Baltimore this summer! These talented 18-25 year old Israeli counselors will be spending the summer as camp specialists at the JCC’s Camp Milldale and our ECE Noah’s Ark program. They have all undergone intensive screening and training to prepare for this experience. The Shlichim each bring their own talents to the table and they can’t wait to bring Israeli culture to camp. Wisdom for Today Rabbi Josh Snyder

Summer in the Wilderness

What is it about summertime that makes it so different, so precious? Is it the air that feels palpable, warm and humid with possibility? Is it the sound of ice cream trucks trolling the streets for eager children, ringing out their familiar tunes? Is it the longed-for chance to go somewhere else, or even explore the outdoor places that are revealed in our backyards? Of course, it is all this and more. The rhythm of time seems to slow as the sunlight lasts well into the evening. Whether we are at camp, relaxing on the beach, or even stepping out to get the mail, the summer brings a greater awareness of the world around us. Summer encourages our full encounter with nature. In the Jewish calendar, summer is an intermediate time. From Shavuot, which falls on June 8-9 this year, until Tisha B’Av, which falls on August 9, there is a period of two months without any major Jewish holiday. It’s appropriate that during this period we read from the book of BaMidbar, which is known in English as Numbers, but really means ‘In The Wilderness’. The book tells the stories from the wild and woolly period between the giving of the Torah at Sinai and the arrival at the edge of the Promised Land, spanning a period of 38 years. It is in the wilderness that Israel finally forges a national identity. The words of the prophet Jeremiah echo across the centuries, “Thus said the Lord: The people [who] escaped from the sword found favor in the wilderness” (31:2). When the Israelites left their comfort zone, and entered into the wilderness, they were able to find out who they really were. I do not think it is a coincidence that we read from BaMidbar in the summer. Particularly now, we find ourselves able to take advantage of the offerings of the great outdoors. So go for that hike in the woods; go see a baseball game; head to the beach; take that great class at the J. Each opportunity for recreation is truly an opportunity for re-creation. Our experiences in the wilderness remind us who we are and who we can become. Rabbi Snyder is the Director of the Goucher College Hillel. He can be reached at josh.snyder@goucher.edu.

Day One - Poland When would I have thought that I would be in Poland? It’s not much of a vacation spot, nor is it much of a tourist attraction. But once you arrive- there’s so much to do. Fresh off the plane, Treblinka was certainly a wake up call. There is nothing left of the camp except for memorials. I walked through rows and rows of rocks, observing all the different town names. In only two days we have visited a death camp, toured the ghetto in Warsaw, experienced Polish food and met people from all over the world. – Maddie

At One Point, They Were Alive… The Warsaw cemetery brought up mixed feelings. Interestingly enough, I did not feel the sadness I had anticipated. Perhaps it was the beautiful weather, but I found the overall atmosphere to be peaceful. If the cemetery could talk, what would it have said? I asked one of my friends if they too did not feel the sadness we had all anticipated. I won’t soon forget the response I got: “Cemeteries are not here to remind us that all of these people are dead, but to remind us that at one point, they were alive.” – Caitlin (seen here in the Warsaw cemetery helping to clean up the area)

On Sunday, May 22, Baltimore sent 44 participants, ages 10-12 to Cherry Hill, NJ for the Mid Atlantic Junior Maccabi Games.

JCC Maccabi Games 2011 We are also proud to be sending 67 kids to participate in the JCC Maccabi Games in Israel, 28 to Springfield, Illinois and 50 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
