Welcome Dear JCC Community, I am very excited to be here in Baltimore as the incoming President of the best Jewish Community Center in North America. I feel very fortunate to spend my first three months with your current President, Buddy Sapolsky. Like many others, I believe Buddy to be one of the greatest JCC executives of his generation. Under Buddy's leadership our JCC has become a "home away from home" for thousands of members as well as an award-winning work environment for staff. As in my previous JCC leadership roles, I will work tirelessly to ensure that our JCC is always innovative and focused on providing a warm and caring atmosphere for all of our members and staff. With the help of our dynamic board of directors together with this incredibly dedicated and passionate professional staff I am confident we will continue to meet our mission of making a difference in people's lives. I'd love to hear what you think is needed at the JCC to provide the best membership experience. Please feel free to contact me at anytime at bhermann@jcc.org or call: 410.559.3502. My wife, Cory, and our three boys Jacob, Zachary, and Jonah, will be joining me in Baltimore this summer. We look forward to the next chapter for our family and becoming full-fledged Baltimoreans. Wishing you a wonderful Hanukkah and a Happy and Healthy New Year. See you at the JCC! Barak

Everyday STRESS Management

Another important stress reduction technique is to try out new ways of thinking. Learn to say “no” and to speak up to ask for help when you need it. People who have a strong network of family and friends manage stress better, in part because they have someone to go to when they need help.

How can you relieve Stress?

Did you know that stress is one of the six most common risk factors for cardiovascular disease? In response to stress, your body automatically increases blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, metabolism, and blood flow to your muscles. This response is intended to help your body react quickly and effectively to a high-pressure situation. When you are constantly reacting to stressful situations without making adjustments to counter the effects, the pressure can threaten your health and emotional well-being.

What can you do about Stress?

The good news is that you can learn ways to manage stress. To get stress under control, first you need to find out what is causing stress in your life. Then look for ways to reduce the amount of stress in your life and learn healthy ways to relieve stress or reduce its harmful effects.

How can you avoid Stress?

Stress is a fact of life for most people. You may not be able to get rid of stress, but you can look for ways to lower it. Learn better ways to manage your time by prioritizing with lists. Find better ways to cope with inevitable problems and difficulties. Take good care of yourself; get plenty of rest, eat well, don’t smoke and limit your alcohol intake.

Register Online www.jcc.org/register

You will feel better if you can find ways to get stress out of your system. The most effective way to relieve stress is different for each person. Try some of these ideas to see which ones work for you: • Exercise. Regular exercise is one of the best ways to manage stress. • Write. It can help to write about the things that are bothering you. • Let your feelings out. Talk, laugh, cry, and express anger when you need to with someone you trust. • Do something you enjoy. A hobby can help you relax. • Learn ways to relax your body. This can include breathing exercises, muscle relaxation exercises, massage, aromatherapy, yoga, or relaxing exercises. • Focus on the present. • Try to look for the humor in life. Laughter really can be the best medicine.

The JCC offers many classes that will help you reduce stress and increase overall fitness, including Mind/Body classes like BODYFLOW™, Yoga, Restorative Yoga and Chair Yoga or cardiovascular classes like cycling.

Comprehensive Survival Arts Martial Arts & Wellness School Comprehensive Survival Arts Martial Arts & Wellness School (CSA) has been the in-house martial arts school at the JCC in Owings Mills for more than 22 years. The school is dedicated to teaching many styles of the martial arts to students of all ages, levels, and abilities. Each class is structured to help students build confidence, character and a sense of community. Douglas Lake originated the CSA system and founded the company in 1972. Master Lake had begun learning martial arts when he was 14. Originally trained in Bando, a Burmese form of martial arts which emphasizes defense over offensive maneuvers, he then expanded his knowledge over the years. Doug was a full-contact kick boxer and is currently a 6th level black belt in Bando. Doug also studied Kung Fu, Aikido, Ju Jitsu and many other forms of martial arts. His knowledge of these various forms was responsible for the formation of CSA. Use of the word “comprehensive” is a direct result of incorporating so many different styles of martial arts into the instruction program. Various elements of karate, Bando, Ju Jitsu, Kenpo, Tái Chi, Tae Kwan Do and Kung Fu are all taught at CSA. The emphasis at CSA is on the person. “We’re not making little warriors, we are helping to make good people,” comments Jen Lake, daughter of the founder. Building confidence, problem solving and a focus on setting and achieving goals is what CSA is truly about. “Our students learn that they can get up and perform at tournaments and demonstrations. It’s not only about how well they perform, but that they are able to get up there and do it!”

CSA Returns to the Park Heights JCC, page 33 & 37. At Owings Mills: NEW Mixed Martial Arts for Children, Teens and Adults Karate for all ages Kickboxing and Self-defense Tai Chi for kids, Teens and Adults Yoga Family Karate Lunch Classes Birthday Parties

CSA has changed in many ways since 1972, however, the most apparent difference is in focus. “In the beginning, we dealt with the external enemy. Today we also concentrate on internal enemies, like stress, high blood pressure and obesity,” Jen says. The physical and mental alertness required to focus on one’s self is a dynamic method for reducing stress and also maintaining good physical form. Today, Master Lake’s daughter, Jen Lake is the head instructor of CSA. As a 3rd Degree Black Belt in both CSA and Bando, she provides the high level of instruction that parents and students have come to expect from CSA. Doug Lake is currently teaching Tai Chi and other softer arts to adults at local senior centers and guest instruction at the JCC. Join the CSA family for the winter session and participate in the upcoming in-house tournament. Details will be available soon on their website: csakarate.com.

Preschool & Preschool Plus

These programs are offered at both the Park Heights and Owings Mills JCC and provide children ages two through five with a well-rounded, age-appropriate curriculum. Children gain self-confidence, develop friendships, and explore new concepts. Daily activities include: energetic play, music, art, circle time, Hebrew, story time, science, cooking, physical education, swimming and creative play. We also introduce children to the customs and traditions of Jewish life, including culture, ethics, Shabbat celebrations and holidays.
