JCCC STUDENT ATHLETES EARN ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN HONORS, SET SCHOOL RECORD The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) released the names of studentathletes honored as Academic All-American for the 2009-10 academic year. JCCC had a school record 19 athletes earning 21 honors. That total ranks JCCC second in the nation. In 2006, JCCC led the nation with 16 total Academic All-Americans. To earn NJCAA Academic All-America by Sport honors, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.60 or better on a 4.0 scale for 45 semester hours or 60 quarter hours. Distinguished Academic All-Americans must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.80 or better on a 4.0 scale for 45 semester hours or 60 quarter hours. Of the 19 JCCC student-athletes to qualify, six earned distinguished All-America status. Three athletes, Zack Smith of the baseball team, Crista Bechard of the women’s basketball team and Jordan Lockwood of the volleyball team posted a grade point average of 4.0. The baseball team and men’s tennis teams finished fourth in country with team grade point averages of 3.32 and 3.22 respectively. The women’s tennis team was 11th (3.15), women’s basketball team 12th
(3.27), volleyball team 30th (3.27) and softball team T-37th (3.19). All seven teams also finished among the top 10 in each sport’s final season poll, and six went on to finish in the top 10 in their respective national championships.
