Johnson (17-7) 73 vs Cowley (18-7) 66 M. Basketball – Cavaliers down Cowley for 17th win OVERLAND PARK, KS – Johnson County Community College men’s basketball team improved
to 17-7 on the season and to 7-6 in conference play with a 73-66 win over Cowley. The cavaliers erased the bitter taste of a 32 point defeat at Cowley a month ago. 6’3” sophomore guard Ryan Magdziarz continued his hot scoring streak to finish with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 2 steals. This was Magdziarz fifth straight game over 20 points. While Magdziarz dominated outside the paint, 6’5” freshman Justin Leathers added 17 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. 6-3 Sophomore Ryan Arel added 19 points. JCCC built a 37-31 half time lead, and then outscored the Tigers 36-35 in the second half for the win. A big stat for the cavaliers was defense and turnovers. JCCC defense held the usually sharp tigers to 37% from the floor. Johnson County only committed 11 in the game and shot a blistering 27-34(79%) from the free-throw line. Most of their damage was done in the last five minutes of regulation when Cowley was forced to press and foul. Cowley was led by Tyrus McGee with 16. The tigers fall to 18-7 and 9-4.
